Preface
English is generally acknowledged the world's most important language. With the advent of globalization, English has regained it's important place in Sri Lanka after a spell of negligence.
The new educational reforms too have emphasized the importance of English in the school curriculum. English has now become one of the core subjects. The computer education and new technology incorporated in the curriculum demands sound knowledge of English from the children. The introduction of English medium has further strengthened the position of English in the curriculum.
It is said language could be well acquired in the natural situation where the language is actively used whereas in Sri Lanka English remains only the place of second language. Our children do not have the opportunity to listen to the speech sounds of English from very early years.
The English speech sounds seldom occur in isolation. They are nearly always combined togetherto form words and sequences of words. In any combination of sounds there is a tendency for each sounds to be influenced by its neighbours. Hence the English speech sounds that are alien to children whose mother tongue is Tamil should be introduced in early days and the simple poems and rhymes that are made of rare combination of sounds could be used for speech practice of young learners.

In simple poems and rhymes the children come up with rhyming words which the children will definitely enjoy and the rhyming verse will remain in their memory for ever. The simple poems are the vehicle of emotion and they become an educative experience for the children. They will understand the emotions, natural activities and culture of a society. They will become familiar of the rhythm of the language.
The collection of poems given under the title. "Ahilam' is great boon to the young learners of our land. It will remain a stepping stone in the task of preparing our children for the impending challenges of the unknown future.

காலங்கள் மாறும்போது கோலங்கள் மாறுகின்றன. பழையவை கழிந்து புதியவை உட்புகுகின்றன. இது இயற்கையின் நியதி. இந்த வகையில் மறைந்தவர்களின் நினைவாக வெளியிடப்படும் நினைவு மலர்களும் அடங்குகின்றன. நினைவு மலர்கள் என்ன நோக்கத்திற்காக வெளியிடப்படுகின்றனவோ அந்த நோக்கத்தை மறந்து கையில் கிடைத்த மறுகணமே குப்பைக் கூடைக்குள் தூக்கி வீசப்பட்ட காலம் மலையேறிவிட்டது. இன்று அவை காலத்தால் அழியாதவாறு புதுப்புது வடிவங்களையும் பொருளடக்கங்களையும் சுமந்து வருகின்றன.
இந்த வரிசையில் அமரர் அகிலாண்டம் சின்னத்தம்பியின் நினைவாக வெளியிடப்படும் இந்த நினைவு மலரானது ஆங்கிலப் பாலர்பாடல்களை (English Nursery Rhymes) உள்ளடக்கப் பட்டிருப்பது பாராட்டத்தக்கது. பாலர்களுக்குரிய தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்ட சொற்களை (ChoicWords) கொண்ட இப்பாடல்கள் கவர்ச்சிகரமான படங்களோடு வெளிவந்திருப்பது பாலர்களை மட்டுமல்ல ஆரம்பக் கல்வி வகுப்புக்களில் கற்பிக்கும் ஆசிரியர்களினதும் கவனத்தை ஈர்க்கும் என்பது ஐயமில்லை. இந்தவகையில் இம்மலரானது “கல்வெட்டு” என்று எம்மால் கொச்சையாக அழைக்கப்படும் நிலையிலிருந்து மிகத் தூர விலகி ஒரு பெறுமதிவாய்ந்த பாலர் பாடப்புத்தகமாக (Text Book) திகழ்வதை நாம் காணக்கூடியதாகவுள்ளது. நாளாந்தம் நாம் புரட்டிப்பார்க்கவேண்டிய பெறுமதிமிக்க அம்சங்கள் இம்மலரில் அடங்கியருப்பது சிறப்பாக நோக்கப்பட வேண்டும்.
மறைந்தவரை நாம் மனதில் என்றும் நினைவு கொள்வதற்கு ஏற்றமுறையில் இந்நினைவு மலரானது நினைவுமலர்களின் வெளியீட்டு வரிசையில் ஒரு மைல்கல்லாக அமைந்துள்ளமை ஒரு சிறந்த, உயர்ந்த முன்மாதிரியான முயற்சி என்பது எள்ளளவும் ஐயமில்லை.
