When I begin to write this article a W curse descends from my mouth which I
fling automatically upon my leaky foun- fO tain pen which has already wasted two 嵩
leaves from my exercise book, The Black- B bird fountain pen, I think, is undeed a P. Curse to mankind, especially to the stu- at dent-world. It looks rather long and | pe handy when bought anew, but as days pass by it begins to show signs of disintegration. Sometimes the whole ink spurts out as if from a fountain; possibly it wants to justify its name. While hastily writing for an examination, how many of ey you will bear to see your fountain pen dis- | es charging ink profusely on your answer se paper? Perhaps, you will immediately he stand up and pass a vote of no-confidence in your fountain pen and employ another instead
How many handkerchiefs, Coat pockets, trouser pockets and Chintanani shirt pockets are damped with ink by knowingly placing these leaky pens in them. How many dhobies would mutter “Greek and Hebrew' when they find it difficult to remove the inky stain out of the coats and trousers and handkerchiefs -

Then there is a fountain pen in the ice. Though it has put in more than teen years service at the Jaffna Hindu bllege, since its master's arrival, it can ork steadily for another two years, as ited in the medical efficiency certificate ven to it by our School Doctor the her day.
Stories of leaky fountain pens may leak it one by one, but I put a stop to them r want of space here.

If I Pretend to be a Drunkard

Lately, when I was rushing throug one of Ballantyne's delightful works observed a digression to the effect tha boys and girls Ought to be adventurou and must learn to encounter risks an Innishaps in the world, in order to mee and grapple with the obstacles, inciden to one’s career. For example we mus know how to escape a mad bull, a duck ing in the Sea, etc.
In my earlier years I was a bit timid although I was not nurtured in excessive delicacy, that I was not mischievous of adventurous. So when I went in the company of my friends to pluck, say, mangoes or guavas, I had to stand below with open mouth and gape at those on the trees in as much as to say that they (fruits) were no good, while they enjoyed their repast all right. So, one day I positively decided to learn the art of climbing trees once and for all. So I sprang on a mango tree with all my dexterity, plucked two of the fruits and tried to get down, on attempting which iny foot slipped. Hence I came down with an acceleration of 32 feet per second per second until I fell on a branch and bumped up, My legs were amply scratched by the bark of the tree. I hushed up the matter and none knew anything of my venture. This happened when I pretended to be a climber,
Now I do not know what may happen to one if I pretend to be drunkard. So let me try an intelligent forecast of the happenings. Yet I am afraid that I may become a habitual drunkard by pretending to be so. Because it once occurred, that a man who always pretended to be invisible did actually become invisible But this liauch I alih pretty sure that I

will have to accept blows or kicks or rebukes-any number Cf them. In the first place in my acting the part of a drunkard I. may overdo it. Herce I may be proved to be a pretender and chastised deservingly. Or I may be arrested by the motor patrol for being a nuisance to traffic. I might even fall a victim to the tyrannies of loafers or ruffians I may make use of a knife to threaten to kill some people who may file a case against me, prove that I attempted to murder, and send me to a twenty years' residence at the Public Boarding House-Prisons. I will naturally sing songs of my own it composition aloud along the streets. Then I will receive scoldings from men and will be teased by mischievous braits who will cry "Come on with the other,' "The song starting with...... ” etc., while those of a contemplative turn Cf mind will be carefully listening to my ragas from Some corners. -
Needless to mention I will drink in the evenings and roam about all night. So when I go out on duty, I shall stop every frail cyclist and nake him honour me and go, while, when I see cyclists with Khaki uniform, I will walk like a gentleman. If people like Fiscal peons threaten Ime I will blow their brains out. Further I will not be alone; I will have a friend of my temperament going with the all along, so that we shal keep excellent company. There is every chance of our falling out due to slight differences of opinion, Moreover, I will go home in the late hours, and thereby pick quarrels with those at home, and break all pots and patis.
My neighbours may claim damages from me for disturbing their sleep during nights by making a tavern of my abode and shouting all the while. Thus we find that this profession is rather disappointing. On deeper reflection, I feel, however, that it is not wise to pretend to be a Sot, to face all these and many dangerous Calalinities.

Gandhiji is a man of great faith. Unlike Hitler, he seldom uses '1' before any audience. He has courage in him which indeed is not Dutch courage. The soul-spirit is his courage. He wanders with no body-guard. To us he is a Sun in flesh. Though misfortunes and calaInities cast shadows before him, yet the Sun (Gandhiji) sends forth its rays perennially. India is free-free in the sense that two-thirds of the whole of India are under Mahatnaji's rule. Poorna Swaraj is before his benignant presence. He has to embrace it. He is waiting for the solemn hour to officiate the ceremony of his "Royal Exchange.'

"And I can say without the slightest hesitation, yet in all humility, that those who say that religion has nothing to do with politics, do not know what religion means,
I have to get leave of my gentle readers. As I said, I have not exactly put the pictures before you. To attain perfect purity, one has to become absolutely pasSion-free, in thought, Speech and action. If you love Gandhiji or Hitler, I am not to question you, but I, who aspire to love humanity, beg of you, my gentle readers, to teach, to those who do not know, Gandhiji's principles and to advise them to follow in his wake,

தற்கால உலகை நோக்குமிடத்து, பொது வாகச் சமயம் என்ற அளவிலே வெறுப்பும் பகைமையும் ஆங்காங்குத் தோன்றியிருப்பது புலனுகும். சமயமானது மக்களைப் பலவாருய்ப்
பிரித்து அவர்கள் முன்னேற்றத்தைத் தடுத்து
நிற்குமொரு தீமையென்றும் அது வலியிழந்து ஒழிந்தாலல்லது உலகம் நலம் பெருதென்றும் கருதுவார் பலருளர். சமயப்பற்றுள்ளார் சிலர் இவர்களை நாஸ்திகர் என்று பழிப்பர்.
உண்மைச்சமயம் இன்னதெனக் காய்தல் உவத்தல் அகற்றி மேற்குறித்த இருதிறத்தாரும் ஆராயின் அவருக்குள்ளிருக்கும் கருத்து முரண் பாடு பெரிதும் மறைந்துவிடும். ஆகையால் சைவசமயத்தின் சிறப்பைப்பற்றிப் பேசுமுன்பு சமயத்தினியல்பையும் அவசியத்தையும் பற்றிச் சிறிது ஆராய்தல் ஆவசியமாகும்,
சமயம் என்பது வறண்ட சாத்திரமல்ல, வெறும் தத்துவக்கொள்கையல்ல, போலிவேட மல்ல, குருட்டுக்குருமார் வழிபாடுமல்ல, அது கம் லெளகிகவாழ்க்கை நல்வழியில் நடக் =த் தூண்டுமொரு சக்தி; கடவுளுக்கும் நமக் கும், பிற உயிர்களுக்கும் நமக்கும், பிற உயிர் ரூக்கும் கடவுளுக்கும் உள்ள தொடர்பை மனி சன் உள்ளவாறு அறிந்து ஒழுகுதலே உண்மைச் உமெனப்படும். ஆனல் ஒரு சமயமென்றில் ாமல் உலகில் பலசமயங்கள் இருக்கின்றனவே; இவைகளும் ஒன்றேடொன்று ஒவ்வாமல் உள உன்றே இத்தனே சமயங்களேன்? இத்தனையும் உச்சமயங்கள் தாமா? என்னும் ஐயங்கள் பல குத் தோன்றுவது இயல்பே. மக்கள் தம் குணம் செயலில் ஒரே தன்மையும் முதிர்ச்சி ம் உடையவர்களாயில்லே. இதனுல்தான் உப்பற்றிய கோட்பாடுகளிலும், அவரை

ஏனைய சமயங்களிற் கூறப்படாதனவாய்ச் சவ சமயம் ஒன்றினுக்கு சிறப்பாக உரியனவா ள்ள இலங்கணங்கள் பல உள. அச்சிறப்பு லக்கணங்கள் சைவ சமயத்திற்கு ஏனைய சமயங் ளின் தலைமைப் பதவியை அளித்து ஏனைய சம களே யெல்லாம் சைவ சமய நிலையை அடைதற் எறிவரும் படிகளாக அமையும்படி செய்கின் ன. இதனுலே ஏனைச் சமயங்கட்கெல்லாம் தா கமும் நாயகமுமாய் ஒரு தனிச் சிறப்பு நிலை ல் நிற்கின்றது சைவ சமயம், இனி முதற் கட |ள் நிறுத்திய சமயம் ஒன்றேயாம். ஏனையோர் றுத்திய சமய வகைகள் நான்கும் ஒவ்வொரு கையிற் பற்பல பகுதியுடையனவாய் அப்பகுதி ள்ளும் ஒவ்வொரு பகுதியிற் பற்பல பத முடையனவாய் விரிந்து நடக்கும். று சமயங்களில் நிற் ப வர் அவைகள்

எனவரும் சிவஞான சித்தியாலும் பல்வேறு சமயி கள் வழிபாடுகள் கொண்டருள் வழங்கும் கடவுள் சிவம் என்பதும் துணிபாகும் அச்சிவனே
'எந்நாட்டவர்க்கு மிறைவா போற்றி: என்று மாணிக்கவாசக சுவாமிகள் பாடியருளிய அக் காண்க. சைவ சமயம் இன்ன காலத்தில் உண்டானதென்பது ஒருவராலும் சொல்ல இய லாது. 5,000 வருடங்களுக்கு முன்னிருந்த அருச்சனன் முதலியோர் சைவ சமயிகளாயிருக் தார்கள். அருச்சுனனுக்கு பல்லாயிரம் வருடங் களுக்கு முன்னிருந்த இராமச்சந்திரன் முதலி யோரும் சைவசமயிகளே. ஆதலால் சைவ சமயம் சரித்திர காலங்கட்கு அப்பாற் பட்டது என்பர் சைவபோத ஆசிரியர். 'கங்குல் பகலறகின்ற எல்லே யுளதாகிய சிவம் அனுதியாகவே' சைவ சமயமும் அனுதியாகும். பண்டை நாளில் சைவ மக்கள் தம் வாழ்நாளில் சமய அனுட்டானங்களை மிக மேலாக மதித்துப் பேணித் தவ வழியில் நின்றனர். அந் நாளில் சைவ மக்கள் வாழ்க்கை யைப்பற்றி கச்சியப்பசிவாசாரியார் பாடிய ஒரு செய்யுள் பின் வருமாறு: * நாட்டியச் செயல்யாவையும் சிவனது நடனம் Fட்டிசைத்திறம் யாவையுமன்ன தேபதியோர் கேட்டிருப்பன யாவையு மவனிசைக் கேள்வி உட்டம் யாவையும் மன்னவன் தொண்டுசெய்

யாகக் சிறந்து விளங்கும் சைவ சமயத்தின் விதி களை நோக்குவாம்.
சைவம் முழு முதற் கடவுளாகிய சிவத்தை வழிபடுவது. சிவம் பிறப்பு இறப்பு இல்லாதது. எங்கு முள்ளது இன்ப வடிவினது. பேரறிவு போாற்றல் பேரின்பமுடைய அறிவுப்பொருளின் சேர்க்கையினும்முன், பிறர் திறக்கும் உயிர்கட்குப் போறிவும் போாற்றலும் பேரின்பமும் உண்டா கல் வேண்டும். சைவ சமயம் பதி பசு பாசம் (கடவுள் உயிர் உலகம்) என்னும் முப்பொருள் களின் இலக்கணங்களாலே பசு பாசத்தடையை நீக்கிப் பதியைக்கூட்டிப் பேரின் பப் பேறு என் னும் பெறுதற்கரிய பெரிய நிலையை எப்படி யடைகின்றது என்பதைவிளக்கும். சிவனுடைய நிலை எப்படி யிருக்கின்றதென்றல்.
'நலமிலன் நண்ணுர்க்கு நண்ணினர்க்குநல்லன் சல மிலன் பேர் சங்கரன்' என்றபடி தம்மையார் என்ன கேட்கின்றர்களோ ഋഞ5 யளிப்பன் ஆன்மாவானது ஆணவம் கன்மம் மா யை என்னும் கொடிய பாசங்களினுல் பீடிக்கப் பட்டிருக்கின்றது. இப்பாசங்களினலே மென் மேலும் பிறவிகளெடுக்க வேண்டியதாக விருக் கின்றது. பிறவிகளெடுக்கின்றதினுல் துன் பத்தி லழுந்த வேண்டும். தண்ணீருள் நின்றுகொண்டு தாகத்தினுல் நாவறளுபவர் போல திருவருளா கிய சமுத்திரத்தின் கண்ணே யிருக்கும் ஆன்மா அவ்வருளைச் சேர்ந்து பேரின்பமாகிய முத்தியை யடையாமால் வீணே உழல்கின்றது. மேலும் ஆன்மாவினுடைய நிலையை திருவருட் பயன் ஆசிரியர் நன்கு விளக்கிக் காட்டியிருக்கின்றனர். அது பின் வருமாறு:

The Constitution of 'The Jaffna Hindu College
Inter Union
1. Name
This Association shall be called “The Jaffna Hindu College Inter Union.'
2. Object
The object of this Union shall be to develop the literary, mental, moral and physical faculties of its members,
3. Membership
The membership shall be restricted to the Intermediate classes of the Jaffna Hindu College.
4. Meetings
(i) Ordinary meetings shall be held once a week on Wednesdays from 11-10 In the forenoon to 12-30 in the afternoon.
(ii) The first meeting of a term shall be a general meeting for the purpose of eecting office-bearers.
(iii) Every fourth (4th) meeting shall
be a Tamil meeting.
iv) The last meeting of a term shall devoted to the reading of the general It of the Secretary and the Submitt

6. The Executive Committee
The Executive Committee shall consist of five members, i. e. (i) The Secretary (ii) The Treastirer (iii) The English Editor (iv) The Tamil Editor (v) another member to be elected at the same time as the Office-bearers.
7. Motions and Resolutions
Motions and Resolutions may be brought forward by any member and duly seconded by another. At least a notice of one week shall be given for such notions and resolutions. These shall be Considered to have been passed only on the assent of the absolute majority of the House. The voting shall be by ballot.
3. Amendment of the Clauses in the Constitution
Existing clauses may be amended or new clauses adopted at any meeting of he Union (after one week's written notice) when two-thirds (2/3) or more of the House are in favour of it.
9. Ouorum
A meeting shall only be conducted when at least two-thirds (2/3) of the members of the Union are present.
(0. Functions of the Office-bearers
(i) The weekly Chairman shall preside over the meetings of the Union. He shall keep order in the meetings. He shall Lttest the minutes of the previous meetngs only after the approval of the majority of the House. He shall have power to overrule any member, to burke

discussion at any time of the meeting, to dissolve meetings, giving sufficient cause to the Executive Connittee when asked.
(ii) The Secretary shall do all the correspondence on behalf of the Union, convene meetings, draw up the agenda and record the minutes of the meetings. The Secretary shall have the power to ask any member to take part in any meeting provided a notice of five (5) days has been given (except in the case of impromptu items). The Secretary shall not ask a member to speak at two (2) consecutive meetings.
(iii) The Treasurer shall collect the monthly subscription of ten (10) cents per member. All subscriptions shall be paid to the Treasurer before the fifth (5th) day of each month. He shall submit his balance sheet to the Executive Committee one week before the last meetings of the term when it will be read to the House for approval.
(iv) The English Editor shall coilect contributions in the form of articles from the members and edit a paper once a term which shall be read in a special meeting or published. The paper shall be called "The Inter Review." The articles shall be submitted to the Executive Committee by the Editor to be censured. The Editor shall be in charge of the Union Library. The Tamil Editor shall co-operate with the English Editor and function in his sphere.
(v) The Executive Committee shall have the power to suspend a member for not more than three (3) meetings of asking a member to apologise, to change the agenda, to postpone lineetings, to invite visitors, to Censure or reject contributions to "The Inter-Review' at its discretion. Its findings and decisions shall be final.

Our Fifth Cricket Match
Jaffna Hindu vs. St. John's
The above match was played on our grounds on the 17th and 18th of March,
St. John's batting first opened well with their skipper who contributed 152 runs to the score. At close of play on Friday the score stood at 201 for 3 wickets and, continuing on Saturday, the Johnians Carried the Score to 259-the last 7 wickets putting up only 58 runs.
Faced with an uphill task, Hindu failed to come off and were able to total only two above the century mark. Following on, they fared better, being all out for 145, leaving their opponents victoHous by an innings and 13 runs.
Our heartiest congratulations to them and, in particular, to R. R. Scott, their Captain for his invaluable innings of 152 which is the highest individual score so far this season. He bats, and fields with such effective style that he stands head and shoulders above most others, and well deserves the praise as the best batsman in Jaffna School Cricket at present,

We started with more than one handip, but fortunately for us, we found our ortsmaster Somewhat of an optimist. e won our first match easily chiefly on Count of the fact that our opponents bre comparatively new to Cricket. We did extremely ill in that match right up to tea-time on 2nd day, but fared disastrously in our innings against some excellent bowling. our third match we beat St. Henry's thout much difficulty. Next we met Patrick's who beat us comfortably. ur congratulations go to them on their nning the championship. We expected

A Study of My School Desk

"Which is your desk?' asked the irate master. "This one, Sir' answered the confused student. 'Who inscribed these things here?" "All these inscriptions were here except this one, which I added.'
Such discussions have taken place between the teacher and many a student. Many times the student might have been punished. Yet I find my desk full of inscriptions of various forms. The names of the dense students, who have toiled at their desk with their impositions,
feeling, that they were unjustly punished,
verses of poetry, quotations and names of contemporary heroes were inscribed On this desk.
Some of the nanne are Of thCSe of familiar heroes of my childhood, whom I would have watched, in the palmy days, play a masterly innings for a long time and return with a blob to their Credit. Some Of thenn Would cha Se the slippery ball until the ball passed the boundary line like tired hounds chasing horses till they entered a bushy brake. Many of them are mysteriously vague to me though I imagine them to have been immense in bulk.
How many inglorions Lincolns, how many Napoleons, not illuminated by the
sheen Of fame, how many Luthers, who
would have learned the minds of their neighbours, how many Gandhis, with shirts on, would have sat at this desk of mine.
I found this inscription in one of the Corners of the desk,
"Better thro' life bare-footed press
Than in a pinching shoe Better no house or home possess Than have a bad wife too.'

This might have been the inscription of a student crossed in calf-love. His "disdainful dame' might have given him the mittens and in his despairing anguish he might have consoled himself by inscribing this stanzas.
One of the many rhyming couplets which adorn my desk runs as follows:
"A jewel is a jewel still though lying
iri dulist And Sand is sand though up to heaven by the tempest thrust." It is perhaps that of a student who might have found the numerical value of his rank to be very high. Though he might have not been high up in the class he seems to be a genius to have consoled himself with such lines that fit the occasion so well.
There is an ocean of initials, many of which I cannot recognise. In some cases the full names are carved out so well that, it might do credit to any architect's name to claim the Carving.
Instead of leaving their foot-prints on the sands of time they have left the
prints of their names on the desks. The
names are perhaps of those who could not impress themselves so well in college so as to be included in the history of the college. Nevertheless they want themselves to be remembered by the coming generaIIOIS.
I can picture them toiling while carving on the desks. Some might have been caught and caned for aught I know. Then remorseful thoughts would have surged in their dense minds, for wiser Students would known that carving nannes is
Selless.

Hindu won the tos and sent in their opponents to bat. An unusual crowd of spectators gathed in the Tamil School to witness this match. Pancharatnam and Ratnasingam opened bowling for our side while Kandiah and Kantheratnam opened batting for Jaffna College. Things looked bad for Jaffna College at first, but when George and Dharmaratnam were associated in a brilliant partnership, their score mounted rapidly. At 103, George mistimed Pancharatnam's ball and was clean bowled for 25. Dharmaratnam was run out a few minutes later. Selvajeyan played easy cricket for some time but was dismissed with a valuable

20 by Ratnasingam's fast ball. Their tail failed to wag on resuming the game on Saturday, when their batting terminated at 170.
Hindu opened well with Karthigesu and Sivapiragasam. The scoring was very slow at first but when Pancharatnam took the place of Perera, runs began to flow in very freely. Karthigesu after half an hour's batting was given out lb w, to Selvajeyan, for 27 runs. When Ratnasingam joined Pancharatnam, the scoring slowed down a little but singles vere not ignored. Pancharatnam, in attempting to stop a ball going if the pads to the wickets, hit his wicket and retired with 58. The rest of the batsmen failed to come off and the innings closed at 141 with a lead of 29 runs for Jaffna College.
Going in a second time Jaffna College opened disastrously but their captain again came to the rescue by contributing 26. The Lunch interval was taken when the score board telegraphed 5 for 68. Continuing Selvajeyan batted well and they declared their innings closed at 3-10 en with the total at: 1.50 for 7 : le

Unfortunately asingam was caught by Kamalarajah Selvajeyan. When the score was 150, indu having high hopes of victory forced he pace and this resulted in the fall of wickets. கோபாலன் வீடு அன்று அமர்க்களம் படுகிறது தகப்பனுர் தோாாமையருக்கும் கோபாலன் தாய்க்கும் பெரும் போட்டி நடக்கிறது.
சீதாராமையர்- என்னடி 1 அல்லி ராச்சியம் பண் என எண்ணி விட்டாயா? உனக்கென்ன காங் கிரஸ் கவுண்டாலென்ன நிமிந்தா லென்ன.
