9. is with great pleasure that we present to our readers and well-wishers the 1954 issue of “The Young Hindu', with the hope that it will provide them with some information about the achievements of our college in the field of studies, sports and other spheres during the past twelve months. -
O). have every reason to be proud of our achievements in the field of sports. In last year's Jaffna Inter-Collegiate Soccer Competitions our First Eleven proved to be the local “ Hungarians.” Our college has one of the finest records in football with seven First Eleven Championships to their credit. Our Second Eleven finished their season as runners-up. More glory came to the college when our Cricket Eleven finished the season with a clean record. We bagged the Inter-Collegiate Cricket Championship for the second time and also set up two new records. In the Jaffna Inter-Collegiate Athletic Contests

runners-up again. Though our athletes turned out brilliant individual performances they could not match the consistency of the Centralites in winning events. We won the coveted Diana Challenge Cup for relay events for the second time in succession. (this year jointly with Jaffna Central College). We also participated in this year’s Jaffna Inter-Collegiate Voley Ball Competition organised by the Jaffna Schools Sports Association and became runners-up. We congratulate our football, cricket, athletic and volleyball teams on their noteworthy successes.
Õis year saw our college being crowned with academic distinction. At the G. C. E. (Ordinary Level) examination held in December 1953, fourteen of our students passed the S. S. C in the First Division with several distinctions to their credit. For the second year in Succession one of Our Students obtained direct admission (i.e. without the viva voce examination) to the Faculty of Arts, University of Ceylon. In the last All Ceylon Religious (Hinduism ) Examination conducted by the Vivekananda society, the winner of the gold medal and the runner-up were students from our college. The beauty of the existing System of education in our college is that it aims at giving every student the fullest development possible.
Oury. M. H. A conducted Thevaram Competitions and "Essay Competitions to foster the interest in religion among our students. Our Historical and Civic Association carried out a .750-mile tour to the ruined cities and other places of historic and religious interest in April last.

of the monuments that will stand to the memory

the Ceylon University for the post-graduate course in Education while Messrs M. Karthigesan, B. A., Hons. (Lond.) and K. S. Mailvaganam, B.A (Lond.), have returned to us after following this course.

ASIA REA WAKENS
T recent conference of Asian Prime Ministers in Colombo has focussed the attention of the world on the part that a free and United Asia can play in World Affairs. Asia has too long remained the poorest, the weakest and the most despised of the nations. Hitherto, her voice was ignored by the great powers in world affairs, although she had representatives in the U. N. O. But the mere fact of the Asian Premiers meeting in conclave caused a significant change of opinion. The West sat up and took notice. For the first time the Western Powers realised that a united demand by the five Asian countries - India, Ceylon Burma, Pakistan and Indonesia - could carry weight in the counsels of the World. History was made when the Geneva conference listened to the voice of Asia calling for an immediate ceasefire in Indo-China and appealing for a standstill on H-bomb explosions till an international agreement was reached on atomic weapons. The conference has set the pattern for the new Asia that is emerging from the melting pot - an Asia that will be independent, peaceful and secure, free as much from colonialism as from communist imperialism. Colonialism has been condemned as “a violation of fundamental human rights and a threat to the peace of the world. The Prime Ministers have also expressed their determination * to resist interference by external communist or anti-communist agencies in the affairs of their countries. This declaration lays the foundations for bringing into being “a third area unaligned with either of the two power blocs. Any attempt by the Atlantic powers to combat communism in Asia, by moving in themselves, is excluded and at the same time intervention in internal politics by the communist powers, through their local communist parties, is debarred. The Prime Ministers have made it crystal clear that they have faith in democracy and intend to preserve in

their countries the freedoms inherent in the democratic system. All parties in these countries who have loyalty to the ideals of free Asia should welcome this decision. This is the only perspective for free Asia, which offers her any hope of preserving peace without forefeiting her independence. صبر
The development of such an Asian community alone can ensure the countries of free Asia the stability and peace they need to develop their economies and solve their pressing problems of poverty. These countries are rich - rich in untapped resources both of material wealth and a human energy. Poverty under - nourishment disease and ignorance are the common lot of the Asian peoples. Till they get rid of these ills, there can be no guarantee of peace or stability. Self-sufficiency in food crops, stabilisation of the prices of exports, and the development of industry and agriculture, are the tasks facing all the nations of South-East Asia. This task could be made considerably easier by co-operation in many fields, and by pooling their resources for the common good. Joint planning of investment, joint agreement on tariff reductions between member - nations in order to increase the volume of interregional trade, joint canalisation of food supplies within the area, so as to remove surpluses in one country and deficits in another, mutual exchange of technical experience and research-to raise the low standards of industrial and agricultural skills-and joint enterprise in such fields as shipping, which still drains away too large a volume of funds to countries outside the region, are all possible and fruitful measures of co-operation.
The fate of Asia's millions lies in implementing the decisions taken at this conference. The establishment of an Asian Secretariat composed of representatives of the five nations to begin with, but capable of enlargement as other countries join hands with them, would meet the need for maintaining links between the member-countries and ensuring continuity of action. The Asian Prime Ministers have made an earnest endeavour to help in relieving international tensions by offering to mediAte in Indo-China. They have also seen the power they wield in World politics by the force of their unity. If they

desire that the world should continue to listen to and take heed of Free Asia's voice, they must stand together at all costs. The inclusion of other independent Asian countries such as Thailand and the Philippines as well as the African nations, who share a community of hopes and aspirations, with Asia, will not only strengthen their economy but also heighten the political standing of the nations of South-East Asia, so long kept poor by the sheer weight of population numbers. - -
Unity, and the pooling of ideas and resources can achieve much more for resurgent Asia and help her to remain strong and independent - a force to contend with in international politics.

THE INDO CEYLON PROBLEM
and
The Nehru - Kotelawala Pact
T Indo-Ceylon Problem is the most pressing problem of today. It is, according to the remarks of a wit, “as old as Vijaya and Kuveni. The Indian esidents with whom We are now concerned were brought into the island mainly for developing the plantations. That was a time when both India and Ceylon were part of Britain's Colonial Empire and when both Indians and Ceylonese were termed “ British Subjects' To the Colonial Office in Britain, the Indians who were imported to work on the tea and coffee estates were just like other “ British Subjects and what their presence meant to the legitimate inhabitants of the country was of little consequence to the alien ruler. In bringing in and sending out as she liked large masses of Indians, she only acted in the interests of the capitalists of her own race and she gave no thought to the troubles she was storing up not only for Ceylon but for India. The result is that a hundred years later, today we find in Ceylon a million Indians amidst a total population of eight millions. They swamp the Kandyan districts and stand in the way of our own people in the political, economic and even in social fields. This million is increasing not only by natural increase, but also by illicit entry from India. In 1950 the number of illicit immigrants arrested was just 900; in 1952; 10,000 - nearly ten-fold. For every illicit immigrant caught, three get in. Illicit immigration has aggraVated the Indo-Ceylon differences.

Now let us examine the political, economic and social causes behind the Indo-Ceylon Problem. The General Election of 1952 revealed the political cause behind this problem. The granting of universal adult suffrage in 1931 gave the Indians political significance. In 1947 they voted either with the Indian National Congress or with the Leftists. The U. N. P. did not get their support, being a party of the middle class; and the upper classes. Later when the Indians were disfranchised, a marked increase in U. N. P. representation was noticed in the 1952 General Elections.
Secondly, the Ceylon Tamils and the Moors being Tamil speaking people partially sympathise with the Tamil speaking Indians. As a result of this, the Sinhalese, the majority community in Ceylon are alarmed that the Indians might link with the Tamils and form a fifth column for the political conquest of Ceylon by India. The Indians, because of their dual loyalty, have not fully identified themselves with the Ceylonese.
The Indians have a lower standard of living. They do cheap labour in estates and in several other fields. They deprive the Ceylonese of jobs by undercutting the indigenous population in estates and other places; they affect to a great extent the economy of Ceylon. Thus we find that there are some economic factors too behind this great problem.
Besides these, the Indians are great businessmen and industrialists. They engage in skilled labour in factories and workshops. Considerable numbers are employed as domestic servants; they generally monopolise the trade in the cities and towns. A substantial part of the big business of Ceylon is in the hands of the Indians. Nattukkottai Chetties form the majority of the money-lenders in our country. The Nadars of India are petty traders here. As a result of these, the Indians compete against the local population in several venues of economic life.

Illicit immigration has also worsened our food situtation. Our government has had to provide for the means of subsistence of the several lakhs of Indians here. The Indians are an extra weight to carry on the food front. These are some of the economic factors behind the Indo-Ceylon Dispute.
Socially too there are differences among the Indian and the Ceylonese. The Indians and the Sinhalese of Ceylon are two different cultural stocks and will not mix under any circumstances. The Indian labourer is a “coolie - a person of inferior social status and the proud Sinhalese peasant will not regard him as his social equal; neither will the Jaffna
Tamil, though he speaks the same speech and worships the same Gods.
There are three possible solutions to this problem - the deportation of all people of Indian origin; or the absorption of all Indians in Ceylon today; or the sharing of the resonsibility by India and Ceylon under some agreed plan Now Nehru and Kotelawala have tried to solve the problem by adopting the last method, i. e. agreeing on a common plan. This is undoubtedly the best way of tackling this problem.
Steps had been taken earlier to solve this problem. In 1939 steps were taken to discontinue Indian labour from public departments; an agreement was made to stop emigration of unskilled labour from India under the Indian Emigrants Act. The Indian and Pakistani Residents Citizenship Act of 1948 defined who the citizens were. But these did not solve the problem. The Nehru-Kotelawala Pact has to a certain extent made an approach towards the solution of this problem.
The first and foremost, factor that aggravates the IndoCeylon Problem instead of relieving it is mainly the problem of illegal immigrants. Now both the governments have agreed to suppress illegal immigration with the co-operation of the Police forces of both the countries. One safeguard

that no illicit immigrant will even in future be able to evada is the new register for non-nationals that the Ceylon Government is going to keep in terms of the Agreement now concluded. This is a register of the people whose names are not on the Electoral Register of Ceylon and this register is called “The Aliens' Register. Any person whose name does not appear in the Aliens' Register will, if his mother tongue is an Indian language, be presumed to be an illicit immigrant from India and will be liable to instant deporation. This is a sound solution to the problem of illegal immigration
The Pact has given the right of representation in the Ceylon Parliament to those who are in the separate register Now the Government of Ceylon has promised to expedite the Registration under the citizenship Act and to complete it
in two years, so there may be no difficulty after the two
yearS.
According to the Pact, the Ceylon Government has given inducements to enable Non-Ceylonese to leave Ceylon as Indian Citizens. The inducements definitely mark an approach to the solution of the problem by indirectly helping the Indians to move Out.
The Governments have further agreed to consult freely on all matters of major policy affecting persons of Indian origin. Whatever be the terms of the Pact; it is very essentiall to examine the spirit in which it is implemented. If this is implemented in the right spirit, then it will at least ease this problem. This Agreement has at least the merit of setting out the problem in relief, defining the issues clearly and suggesting in the best light the long term remedies, leading to a just and enduring settlement.

ASTRONOMY ADVANCES
ślonow yes it is advancing. When you are looking at this page there may be a good old scientist looking through a telescope into space. A day will come When space travel becomes possible. Man invading Mars is not an impossibility in the eyes of certain scientists. So, we will be at sea if we don’t know about the universe around us which is going to constitute “The Tomorrow's World
Space; its immensity is indescribable. In this space there are billions and billons of stars. An example of a star is the Sun. There are many stars which are brighter, heavier, larger hotter and farther away from the Earth than the Sun is. Distances of the stars from the Earth are measured in light years which is the distance required by light to travel in one year and it is approximately equal to 6000000000000 miles. The nearest star to the Earth is 4.3 light years away from the earth. Its name is Alpha-Centarus. Another star known as Canopus is 650 light years from the earth. There is an example to illustrate these distances of light years. Suppose the Sun is ten feet away from the Earth then this nearest star will be about 510 miles away! Such are the inhabitants of the universe, Of them Alpha Centarus and Canopus are worth remembering.
Leaving that great stardom, let us see a bit about our Solar System. The Sun is a star, and Earth is a planet which does give out heat or light as the stars. The Solar System consists of the Sun in the centre and around which the nine planets revolve. These nine planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. The latter five planets are farther away from the Sun than the Earth- and hence they are very cold. The first two are very near the Sun and hence they

are too hot for life to exist; other factors also influence the temperature. The conditions on the planet Mars suggest that life may exist there. The environmental set up in Mars is such that even if life exist they must be more genius and intelligent than ourselves. It is also claimed by certain professors that the continuous line always seen on Mars through the telescope is an immense irrigating channel used to irrigate dry lands in Mars Roughly this Solar System's radius is 3,500 million miles. But this collection of heavenly bodies is a very minute speck in the whole universe.
In this mysterious universe there are not only stars and planets but also comets, meteors and asteroids. Asteroids are small planets. Their diameters range from 50 to 500 miles Almost all of them cannot be seen by the naked eye. Comets are members of the Solar System. They consist of three distinct parts, the nucleus, the coma, and the tail. Nucleus consists of particles of varying dimensions starting from a big ship to a small tiny speck. Coma is of the same structure as the nucleus and it surrounds the nucleu. Tails may be sometimes many million miles long. Once the Earth actually passed through the tail of a comet. Meteors or shooting stars are also a collection of minute particles. When they rush towards the earth, due to the friction of them with the atmophere, intense heat is developed and they are completely burnt off. Certain meteors are not completely burnt and a fraction of their mass sometimes reaches the earth.
Many wonders not known to man may be happening in this tremendous universe. Antarus, one of the bright star's is thirty times heavier than the Sun and its mean density is about three-millionth of the density of water. That is thousand times lighter than Hydrogen. The energy obtained for producing
this intense heat is obtained not by a chemical action, but
by the fusion of hydrogen into helium, the principle involved in Hydrogen Bomb. When this is done tremendous amount of energy is produced. This is the energy which nakes the stars intensely hot even to a million degrees on Centigrade scale. Many of you might have heard of sunspots. These

are small black spots comparatively dimmer than the surrounling surface. Tey are caused by a whirling column of heated uses. Sunspots do affect the radio Service on the earth, and cause magnetic storms. Moon has no atmosphere and the side acing the Sun is very hot, hotter than boiling water and the leeward area is very cold. But if necessary precautions are taken we may go and explore the Moon
Highest speed attained in aeroplanes by man on earth is
about 760 m. p. h. It is known as supersonic speed. As the speed increases the difficulties also increase. The most imporant of all these is the frictional resistance of the air and the planes. Speed greater than this can be obtained by rockets. Rockets use a different principle of propulsion. With the present speed of our day it will not be an easy matter to travel to Mars, but the possibility is predicted.
Now about Flying Saucers. The rumour about these Flying Saucers was started in New York. After that, news started pouring from every nook and corner of the World about the Flying Saucers. But considerable interest was aroused and by the press. When it was learnt that the Flying Saucers were spotted by pilots who even made official statements, certail people started even writing books about the matter. But there is a belief among certain astronomers that the flying saucers may be sent or piloted by some unknown men from Mars.
One Word for you, dear reader, if you ever happen to look the bright blue sky studded witn beautiful pearls hereafter you will be thrilled by the wonders of the universe, by the immensity of space and the smallness of our Solar System

The Method of Science
* Mans work must ever end in failure, Unless it bears the stamp of wind. The head must plan with care and thought, Before the hand can execute. -Schiller
The method of Scientific investigation is nothing but the expression of the necessary mode of working of the human mind. It is simply the way in which all phenomena are reasoned about, rendered precise and exact. The mental operations of a man of Science are different from those of an ordinary person; while the former is systematic and refined in his methods of investigation, the latter is unmethodical and crude. The methods and operations of a meatseller in weighing out his meat in common scales and that of a chemist in performing a difficult and complex analysis by means of his balance and finely graduated weights vary not in action or in the principles of construction of the scales. It is only that the beam of one is set on an infiInitely finer axis than the other.
Men of Science work by means of induction and deduction. It is by the help of these operations that they enlarge the circle of light or nature. Hidden natural laws and cause are brought to light and it is here that the evincing Skill of the scientist is brought into play in building up out of these hypotheses and theories.
This does not mean that the mind of the man of Science is constituted differently from that of his fellow men. It will Surprise many to know that they have been, all their life, acting on the principles of inductive and deductive philosophy. Everyone has, at sometime or other, found occa

Si On to Set in motion a complex train of reasoning as a
scientist does when he sets forth in training the cause of natural phenomena.
The following example will make this clear. You go into the Jaffna market wanting a banana. You take up one from a fruit-stall and on biting it you find it is sour: you examine it and find it hard and green. You take up another and find that too hard, green and sour. The stall keeper offers you another and before biting it you examine it and find it to be hard and green and you at once say that you will not have it as it must be sour like those you have already tried.
The possession of a colossal intellect is not required to make these simple observations and if you trouble to get into the logical elements of what has been done by the mind you will be greately suprised. You have in fact performed the operation of induction. You found by experience in two cases that hardness and greeness went with sourness. If it was so in the first case, it was confirmed by the second. It is a very small basis, but it is still enough to drain an inference from: you generalize the fact and say that hardness and greeness go With Sourness where bananas are concerned.
There is no flaw in the reasoning and for all we can say is an example of perfect induction. Sometime later, when you are discussing the qualities of bananas with a friend you casually remark, “It is a curious thing, but, I find all hard and green bananas are sour.” The next instant you are asked, But how do you know that?’” With consummate case you reply, “Oh, because I have tried them over and over again and have always found them to be so.”
In Scientific language we call this experimental verification. your law becomes more inflexible when people in many parts of the world observe the same thing, i.e. hardness and green
ness go with sourness. In short, it is the universal of experience

of mankind, wherever attention has teen directed to the subject. The law gains in rigidity, the more varied the conditions under which the same results are attained
Scientific experiments are carried out in precisely the same manner. Only here it becomes a matter of duty for the scientist to expose the supposed law to every kind of verification. Provision has to be made for experimental errors but these soon assume microscopic proportitions in the face of vast experiments at verification. So, no one ventures now adays openly to denounce the validity of a law or even a hypotheses, but it must be remembered that a single conflict between a fact and a hypotheses is fatal to the hypotheses. We must be under no illusion - to say nothing of a delusion that our pictorial conception is representative of the actual machinery of nature. A hyotheses is only one conception. amongst many alternative possibilities and must never be thought of as if it were a real fact. One of the best established laws of nature is that of gravity, (i. e., when you let go your grasp of an article it immediately falls to the ground) because everyone can verify it for himself and this is the strongest possible foundation on which any natural law can rest.
One way of setting bare the complexities of nature is to close in on her and get to grips with her. For “the secrets of nature betray themselves more readily when tormented by art than when left to themselves.

FASHION CORNER
(0. years back, I had been thinking that only ladies ame under the spell of fashion. I had been teasing my listers and nieces over their silly fashions. But after I came to this college, I knew that boys were influenced by fashion |ulte as much as women and girls.
Ladies, generally, use artificial aids like creams and faceowders, and lipsticks - of course kiss-proof- and paint their ye-brows and lashes to make up for what nature denied hem. Boys are not very different; for, I have seen some oys rubbing creams into their faces. I have not seen any oy using colouring matter. It is common among boys to se face - powders.
Even boys have begun to style with their hair. They ther wave it or only make one big wave or side - comb with small turn at the front. A class-mate of mine spends five minutes every morning to get that big curly wave. He says hat it is an art and I agree with him. Another boy of our lass has spiky hair and is afraid to risk a comb on it. I believe it to be another kind of fashion.
Our college boys are levelling up with girls in the way hey wear their clothes. They don't look for matching colours ke ladies. But they roll up the long sleeves of their shirts to the elbow. The shirt around the hip and the shorts are ulled up to form, a bulge which is the “Yankee Style,' as hey call it. They also wear the Yank-belt. Wearing socks ind shoes and ties are common. Many boys have a back ocket on their shorts. Some boys put their fountain pens them. Others put their purse, generally empty, for fashion's ake. Some boys carry in those back pockets a small mirror comb and some face powder, just like women carrying their bilet sets in hand-bags.

I have seen some boys we ari ng wrist-watches for fashion's sake. The watches may not run. But that does not matter. The only ornament that boys wear is the ring. Some boys do not keep their handkerchiefs in their pockets. They roll them and place them around their necks between the collars of their shirts like a halter. I have seen many boys taking their hankies and wiping their faces, even though they do not perspire. A
Styles among ladies change within a very short period. The patterns of blouses and shades of Sarees change when a new stock arrives at Dayarams. Similar changes occur in boys' fashions too. Girls have begun to wear pyjamas in North Indian style. Like that boys have been changing their shirts to bush-coats and then to bush-shirts and then to T-Shirts and now to Broadway shirts. The shades of T-Shirts once changed from plain colours to stripes and then to motley. Among boys the fashion changes only after their old clothes wear off. But among ladies, once the fashion goes even the new saree is locked up in the trunk for ever, - a characteristic of ladies of fashion. -
Many elderly boys wear dark glasses even in the evenings. May be, it is for fashion's sake or as a screen for their eyes while they look at the moving beauties of nature. Some
boys Smoke just for fashion's sake. They think it is very attractive. I have seen rich boys using only the most expensive cigarettes. They never use a box of matches, but only cigarette - lighters. You must look at the way they hold those cigarettes between their fingers. It is a sight. They
Send out the smoke in rings and puffs and through their noses and even their eyes. But they never throw away the stump until the fingers are almost burnt.
The moustache is a common ornament on the face of the grown-up boys. They like to feel mature and masculine and parade their vegetation on their upper lips in the style of film - Stars.

Anyhow, like ladies, boys do not mutilate their bodies or the sake of wearing ornaments. Our girls have their ears bored to wear earrings. Even their noses are punctured to receive a jewel. Boys are at least free from such physical mutilations. Boys' fashions, however, are not expensive, but Ia dies” are.

was on a clear fine morning, that left home with five of my friends to go on a journey to Delft. At about 8-00 a.m. we reached Kayts, where we received information that the launch which plys between Delft and Kayts would come only at 10-00 a. m. So we had two hours before us, during which time we went for a walk along the beach. There to our great joy we met two Sinhalese youths, one of whom was a tall, black fellow with a well-built body. He amused us by making funny faces and playing many tricks. The other was a little calm fellow who did not like talking very much. They were also going to Delft. At 9-45 a. m. we returned to the jetty, where we were able to see a launch coming at a distance of fifty or sixty yards.
The launch is a small one, but well built and of high speed. The “Silver Spray is its name. We got into it and occupied the back seats. There were a good number of people in the launch. At 10-30 a.m. the launch was ready to start. The launch began to move slowly, Between Kayts and Nainativu, nothing particular happened. The sea was calm. My tall, Sinhalese friend kept on joking and making

fun. The launch reached Nainativu, where it waited for half
an hour. The wind began to blow a little more than usual. There were signs of bad weather. The launch left Nainativu at mid day.
The clouds were coming from the north-west and covered a good part of the sky. The Sun's light could no longer be seen. It got dark. When the launch was approaching Nainativu, the speed was raised. The wind blew harder and harder from the north-west, Which was an unusual direction. Rain poured down. At the same time the waves poured over the deck. The waves struck the side of the launch and made it roll roll terribly. At 1-00 p.m. the launch was between the islands of Delft and Nainativu. The wind began to blow more strongly and the sky was covered with black clouds. Huge waves struck the side of the launch. The launch rolled in the rough sea, and the passengers were very uncomfortable. That tall friend who kept on joking and making fun had then become us dumb as a statue. He was very frightened and fell asleep. Many of the passengers suffered from seasickness. Some of them were vomiting. I could not bear the sight of it. All the time the launch was skipping. It was fourtunate that the launch was strongly built. The island of Delft came in , sight. It reached the island at 2-30 in the afternoon and stopped in deep water, encircled by a reef of coral.
We left the launch and went into the interior of the island. It is mainly a coral island. The top soil is extremely thin, Coral stones were everywhere. All the compounds and the fields are fenced with coral stones. The way in which these fences are constructed is admirable. There are plenty of palmyrah palms. Their decayed leaves are sent to other islands like Analativu to be buried in gardens to add humus to the soil. Palmyra toddy is both a drink and a food for the inhabitants. The main occupation of the people here is farming. The chief cultivated crop is “ Mondi' which is a substitute for paddy in the island. A steady and good

drinking water supply is to be found only in the western part of the island. Plenty of cattle and sheep are reared here. Ponies are also found in large numbers. They are not tamed to draw carts. The bulls here are small and hardy They are not equipped with nose strings; instead the reins are passed round the horns. Controlling them when yoked to the cart is a feat producing amusement to a Stranger.
There are remains of an old Dutch-Fort, with pillars still standing, and is worth seeing. It is preserved by the Archaeological Department. We stayed here for two days, during which time we saw most of the island. We returned home without any unpleasant experience.

At that time a boy came walking along the bank and found the fine ball of yarn and the clothes. He looked round and there was nobody to be seen. Then he took the ball and went away,

When the boy came ashore after bathing he found only his clothes. He thought that the boy who came along the bank would have stolen his ball of yarn, when he was under the water. He soon followed the road and caught the boy who had stolen his ball of yarn. He asked him to return the ball. But the second boy refused and said that it was his own. Then the two boys went to the judge of that village.
The judge asked the boys what the matter was. The
first boy told the story. Then the judge asked the second boy on what he had rolled his yarn. He replied that he
had rolled it on a wooden stick. Then the judge asked the first boy the same question. He replied that he had rolled it on a wooden ball.
So the judge took the ball of yarn and asked his servant to unroll it. When that was done the judge found the wooden ball, but not a Wooden stick.
Then the judge Said that both of them had spun a yarn. The first boy had spun the real thing, while the other had done it only out of his mi chievous brain.

When I was young, one day my friends and I decided to steal some mangoes. A mango tree stood near our house With plenty of fruits. My father knew of our plans and Asked me not to do so. But I did not obey. We went to the house where the mango tree stood. The owner of the house was an old man. He lived alone. When we went there he was out. So I and another friend Went in. The others stayed outside. Then I climbed up to pluck some mangoes. saw a ripe mango on the top. The boy who came with me waited below at the foot of the tree. I plucked the ripe
ango and dropped it; suddenly the road side door of that house opened and I saw my friends who were standing utside, running. The old man came in. The boy who stayed elow ran outside. So the old man looked up. He saw me Ind asked me to get down. I came down. He went to my ouse and reported everything to my father. So he became ngry and took a long stick, and thrashed me. From that

Our Last Inter House Sports Meet

O. last Inter House Sports Meet was held on the 26th of June 1954 on our college grounds. When I stepped into the grounds found the sheds of the five Houses into which my school is divided well-decorated. I belonged to Selvadurai House and I sat in a corner of my House shed.
The meet started at 3-15 p.m. with the Post-Senior Shot-put event. In the 220 yards race T. Ganesalingam ran well to equal the existing ground record. In the Hurdles he did still better and broke the existing record.
During the interval the members of the College Cadet Corps served the visitors short-eats and drinks.
The Tug-of-War was the last and the most interesting item of the meet. Pasupathy House won the Inter House Championships and the Relay Cup while Nagalingam House won the Tug-of-War Shield and Sabapathy House won the Decoration Cup.
After the Tug-of-War the members of the different Houses lined up behind their respective flags near the visitors shed.
Our Principal then spoke a few words about the achievements of our school during the past year both in sports and studies.
Then the patron of the meet, Mr. A. S. Navaratnarajah the Assistant Government Agent of Jaffna, spoke a few words in which he advised us to become farmers when we left school and not to expect to get comfortable government jobs. The prizes were distributed by Mrs. V. Arumugam, the Vice Principal of the Jaffna Hindu Ladies' College. Then Mr. P. Thiagarajah thanked all those who helped him to make the meet a success and we went home at about 6-30 p.m.

Changes in Our Staff
(). vacancy caused by the departure of Mr. K. Janaka B. A. (Lond), Dip. in Ed. (Ceylon) in December last to join he staff of Vijaya College, Matale, was filled in January by Mr. S. Kumarakulasingam, B. A. (Ceylon) of the staff of Skanda Varodaya College, Chunnakam. In May Messrs. M. Karthigesan, B. A. Hons. (Lond.) and K. S. Mailvaganam, B. A. (Lond.) came back after completing their post-graduate course in Education at the Ceylon University, Mr. C. K. Kularatnam left us in June to join the Y. M. C. A. College of Physical Education, Madras, while Vidvan K. Karthigesu, B. A. (Lond.) also left us in June to follow the post-graduate course in Education at the Ceylon University. Our Sinhalesemaster, Mr. P. Alwis who was sucessful in the Apothecaries,
Entrance Examination left us in September. Mr. T. Ramasamy (First Class English Teachers' Certificate) retired in July last.
Mr. S. P. Rasiah (First Class English Teachers' Certificate) will be retiring within the next few weeks. Mr. S. Parameshwaran joined our staff in September. Mr. C. W. Pathirana has succeeded Mr. P. Alwis as Sinhalese-master.
We accord a warm welcome to all the new members of our College Staff and wish all success to those who have left us.
Mr. T. Ramasamy
Mr. T. Ramasamy received his education at Hartley College, Point Pedro, where he completed the Cambridge Local Examinations in 1912. After serving the Government for about ten years as a Forest Ranger and later as an Irrigation Field Assistant he resigned owing to ill-health. Then for a few years he rendered service to the Jaffna Hindu College Management and to the Manager of the Hindu Board Schools.

In 1928, Mr. Ramasamy was appointed to the staff of Urumpirai Hindu English School (now College) and was transferred to the Vaddukoddai Hindu English School (now College) in 1930. Mr. Ramasmy was appointed to the Staff of Jaffna Hindu College in 1931 by the then principal, Mr. V. R. Venkataraman, M. A. He passed the English Teachers Certificate Examination in 1933.
During his period as a teacher at our College he had served as the Warden of the Hostel, Hony. Treasurer of the J. H. C. Co-operative Society, Hony Treasurer of the J. H. C. Building Fund, etc. After completing twenty-three years of service at our College he retired in July last on reaching his sixtieth year. -
Mr. S. P. Rasiah
Mr. S. P. Rasiah was educated at Jaffna Hindu College where he passed the Cambridge Senior in 1914. He has been a member of the staff of Jaffna Hindu College since July 1915 excluding the period between January 1916 and May || 1918 when he was an assistant teacher at Kokuvil Hindu English School (now College).
In addition to the First Class English Teachers' Certificate Mr. Rasiah has the Physical Training Certificate of the Ceylon Education Department, the Trained Scout Masters' Warrant and the Degree of the Bachelor of Physical Education of the Indian Correspondence College of Physical Education.
He has served our College for a number of years as the Scout Master, and the Sports Master. For several years he was the Hony. Secretary of the J. H. C. Co-operative Credit Society Ltd., Hony. Treasurer of the J. H. C. Co-operative Thrift and Credit Society Ltd. and President of the Teachers Guild. (He is still the President) He was also the Hony. Secretary of the Northern Province Teachers' Provident Society Ltd. from 1939 to 1946. He will be retiring shortly after completing nearly forty years of service as a teacher.

"Cumarasudamy Day'
The first anniversary of the death of our former principal Mr. A. Cumaraswamy was celebrated under the auspices of the J. H. C., O. B. A. on Friday 20th November 1953 in the College Hall. In the unavoidable absence of Dr. S. Subramaniam Mr. T. Muthuswamipillai, our Manager, unveiled a portrait of the late Mr. A. Cumaraswamy. Mr. K. A. Selliah, the Principal of Taffna College, Mr. S. Sivapathasundaram, the Principal of Paramesvara College, and Mr. M. Balasundram, Advocate, spoke at his function. Mr. P. S. Cumarasamy, Asst. Secretary of rhe O. B. A. proposed the vote of thanks. Mr. V. M. Asaipillai he principal, presided.

Inter-House Athletic Meet
At the inter-House Athletic Meet which was concluded on 26th June, under the distinguished patronage of Mr. A. S. Navaratnarajah, Assistant Government Agent, Northern Province, Pasupathy House won the championship for the third year in succession with 118 points. Nagalingan House were runners-up while Sabapathy House came third. One new Inter-House Record was set up and another was equalled at this meet.

The Jaffna Hindu College Old Boys' Association (Colombo Branch)
A General Meeting of the Association was held in February last, which was as usual followed by lunch.
It was decided to help the organisers in running the last carnival and raffle in aid of the Jaffna Hindu Ladies College Building Fund. I am glad to say that many of our members voluntarily contributed of their best towards its success,
A committee of 8 members with Dr. T. Nallainathan as secretary was elected to report on the following resolution:
TAMIL and SINHALESE as media of instruction and the position of English in our education including the teaching of mathematics and Science through the medium of English in the educational curriculum. We are also awaiting the decision of the Board regarding our request to appoint a nominee of the Association to the Board of management and are taking steps to form a central union of old Students associations (Colombo Branches of the Jaffna Hindu College and affiliated schools.)
It is not my intention to mention the difficulties we have in contacting the old boys as we are not aware of the addresses of many of them. I like to take this opportunity to request the youngsters when they leave school to join the Old Boys’ Association, Jaffna or the Colombo Branch and contribute towards the progress of our Alma Mater.

() ur achievements in the field of sports during this triod viewed along with our examination results would bear stimony to the fact that better physical conditions could nake healthy minds. Our “double" in winning the J. S. S. A. occer Championship for 1953 and the J. S. S. A. Cricket hampionship for 1954, coupled with the best G. C. E. Examination Results in the Peninsula with no less than fourteen irst Divisions and several Distinctions, indicates the high tandard of general competence that prevails among our boys.
Our strength in the field of sports during the period inder review could best be illustrated by references without
ments to our notable achievements :-
(I) Our First Eleven Soccer Team won all the matches it played and finally emerged as Champions for 1953, in the Ana Inter-Collegiate Tournament organised by the J. S. S. A.
(2) Our Second Eleven Soccer Team became runners-up in the J. S. S. A. Tournament of 1953.
(3) Our Cricket Team annexed the Jaffna Inter-Collegiate ticket Championship in the tournament organised by the S, S. A. without losing evening a single match. Our Team ind the honour of setting up a record total of 411 runs in one innings. V. Rajaratnam, a member of the team scored runs in an innings to establish a new Jaffna Schools' Record for the highest individual score.
(4) We were runners-up in the Volley Ball Tournament 1954, organised by the J. S. S. A.
(5) In the Inter-Collegiate Athletic Meet of 1954, we Were again runners-up. T. Ganeshalingam, our Athletic Captain

had we. There was the fear that the “Battle of the Blues' might be abandoned. The boys were very keen on playing this match and they had their way. The match was played in the afternoon of two week days. This match created interest all over Jaffna as Jaffna Central was the other College that could challenge us for the unofficial cricket crown. Our boys emerged with glory in this match, We led Central in the first innings. In the second innings when time intervened, we needed 55 runs with seven wickets intact. The other match was the one against Hartley College, played at Pt. Pedro. Hartley declared their second innings giving us 35 minutes to score 84 runs. Our boys took up the challenge well and in a spell of hurricane hitting, they rattled up 87 runs for the loss of only two wickets within 28 minutes.
The team was led by T. Krishnaswamy, ably assisted by V. Gunaratnam. Krishnaswamy regained his lost form as a bowler and was successful in turning the ball very viciously this season. We hope he will continue to maintain this tradition. V. Gunaratnam who scored a century against Kokuvil Hindu and S. Amarasingam deserve special mention for their good pieces of batting in a number of matches.

In the Six-a-Side Volley Ball Tournament organised by the S. S. A, we were runners-up. We congratulate Skanda Varodaya College on winning the Championship. For the first time we adopted with much success the Ceylon Federation Rules hough we were new to this type of game we did very well ... Gunaratnam led the team. As a spiker he has very few quals in Jaffna. Thc other members of the team were K. Vettivetpiliai, S. Navarajah, S. Kailasapathy, T. Thanigasalam, ind K. Kanagaratnam.

Dur Annual Inter-House Athletic Meet was concluded on the 25th of June. The meet was a success from the point of bf view of the achievements and the arrangements. T. Ganeshalingam set up a new Ground Record of 14.2 secs, in the Senior Hurdles Event. He also equalled the existing Ground Record of 26 secs, in the 220 yards (Seniors). Many other achievements were just outside the Ground Records. The following are the important results of the Inter-House Athletic Meet.

Our thanks are due to the several Old Boys, friends and well.wishers who gave us all assistance and encouragement. It is our fervent hope that they will continue to help us and encouarge us in every possible way.
The Fourth Quadrangular Athletic Meet was held this year at Manipay Hindu College who were our hosts this year. Apart from the attraction provided by the participating athletes, Manipay Hindu College entertained us lavishly at lunch and at tea on that day. We shall remember their hospitality and await our opportunity to entertain them in the manner in which they deserve. Our athletes did well and were placed in almost every event.
The Jaffna Inter - Collegiate Athletic Meet was held on the 5th, 6th and 7th of August 1954. One noteworthy feature of this meet was that the points were more evenly distributed The monopoly of a few Schools is fast declining. The younger schools are displaying greater interest in athletics. The J. S. S. A. had been partly responsible for this unprecedented growth of interest in athletics. The high Standard of the meet can be gauged from the fact that no less than five records were bettered.
Although we scored lesser number of points than last year, we were runners - up once again at this meet. We congratulate Jaffna Central College on winning the Championship this year too. We congratulate K. Paramsothy of Nadeswara College on winning the Parsons' Challenge Cup by improving his Javelin Throw Record. Our Relay Teams shared the houour of winning the much coveted Diana Challenge Cup for Relay Events with Jaffna Central College. Our Athletic Captain, T. Ganeshalingam distinguished himself as the best athlete at this meet by winning the first places in the 100 yards and 220 yards for Seniors. His time of 24.4 secs. for the 220 yards compares favourably With Ceylon School Standards. In the Jaffna Inter-Club Meet he won these two events with great ease and confirmed his timings in the Inter-Collegiate Meet by doing these distances in 10.2 secs., and 24.1 secs., respectively. He will be partici pating in the C. P. S. A. S. A. meet and the A. A. A. meet of 1954. We hope he will do well and wish him all success. The performances of R. Sivanandarajah and S. Ganeshasundafram in the Senior Division and K. Sothirajah and S. Sivakumaran in the Intermediate Division at the Inter-Collegiate meet deserve our congratulations.
Year after year we persist in bringing to the notice of
arents, old boys and members of the public the urgent need for extending our playing field. We are pleased to record that our efforts have met with some success this year The J. H. C. Tamil School had been shifted and the land occupied by it had been annexed to our playground, A plot of land to the north of the Tamil School premises had also been bought out of the proceeds of the Raffle organised by Our Old Boys in connection with the Diamond Jubilee Carnival held in 1951. We offer our sincere thanks to the Manager, the Board of Directors and the Old Boys' Association. Although these extensions have been made we are still far from our aim of providing our students with a 440 yards track or even a full football field satisfying international regulations. It is our hope that all of us will endeavour to provide our school with a playing field worthy of its name.

There are many people who still believe that the Cadet Movement creates and encourages a tendency towards militarism and its evils. The Cadet Movement has played a very important part in the leading schools of the Island for almost sixty years and it has in no way resulted in germinating seeds of passion for organised warfare or even military service. The movement has, on the other hand, created educational influence of a very high order. The Cadet Movement in Ceylon has done more for the improvement of Ceylon boys of all the communities than all the educational inventions and enactments of the past years. Apart from bringing together boys of all communities from all parts of the Island, the Movement has had a wonderful influence on them by its disciplinary training and has taught them habits of attention to details and of combined action.
The Cadet Movement is symbolic of the spirit of this country, the spirit that not only appreciates all that is best in fellow human beings of other nations but a spirit which imbued with loyalty to the land, will defend it against wanton aggression. Such a spirit can only be engendered and built on a sense of discipline, self-sacrifice, wise tolerance and deep underStanding of the humanity in man. These fine elements of Military Training re inculcated in a Corps that is statedly non-combatant - but which lays the groundwork on which National Defence, as understood in non-totalitarian states, can readily be built up if the occasion should arise. Every major and minor racial group in the Island is represented in the Cadet Batallion, every intellectual aud economic stratum has contributed to its structure. Throughout a period of nearly sixty years of Cadet activity all these elements in this nation have met with the common purpose of understanding one another, of imbibing a simple sense of respect, self-discipline and tolerance.

Nearly a thousand boys meet every year, live together, acquire a rare understanding of the oneness of human nature and develop the qualities that will come to the fore if the defence of the land calls for their display.

The Jaffna Hindu College Contingent
The Jaffna Hindu College Contingent, although recently established (the Junior Platoon in 1949 and the Senior Platoon in 1950) has been making steady progress. Within these few years it has made its mark at the various competitions held annually at Diyatalawa and Boosa. In the last two annual Camps the College Senior Platoon was placed high in the order of merit in the Hermann Loos Competition beating some of the schools which have had cadeting for about a quarter of a century.
The Platoon confidently hopes to improve on its performances in the years to come.

Our performance at this year's Athletic Meet was more than satisfactory. Of the achievements the most remarkable were those of N. Kanagasabapathy, P. Sivasubramaniam, T. Satnakunanathan, S. Sivalingam, S. Sivapalan and our Ex-Athletic Captain, N. Somasundaram. We congratulate them.
I should indeed be failing in my duty if I did not thank our Housemaster, Mr. S. P. Rasiah, Messrs. T. Senathirajah, K. Arunachalam, S. Jeyaweerasingham and Miss. V. Shanmugam for their valuable services to our House.

I feel proud to report the success of our House in the Tug-o'-War for the fifth year in succession. Special mention should be made of the athletes who participated in the Inter-House Meet with enthusiasm. T. Visvarajah emerged as the Senior Champion by winning three first places.

We entered the field of sport with a spirit of adventure, we won and we lost, but what mattered most was that we played the game as it should be played. Our boys quarrelled about many things, loving each other all the time. The fine thing about a wrangle on sport is that there is no bitterness in it. On the whole we did magnificently and there is no blot on the fair name of our House,
In football, the mantle of victor fell on Selvadurai House, For the first time in four years this title has eluded us. We were gallant losers this time but there is still infinite scope for improvement.

In Athletics we had a neck-to-neck fight with Nagalingam House, but owing to a mere accident of circumstances we were placed third. In the Athletic meet we dominated the Intermediate Group in which Our Athletic Captain emerged as the Individual Champion. We congratulate him on his splendid performance. We won the Inter-House Decoration Shield. This was undoubtedly the outcome of the excellent work done by P. Kanagasingham and A. Vijayaratnam. I thank P. Kanagasingham for his sincere and voluntary service.
I am proud to mention our performance in the InterHouse Football Competitions. Both the teams of our House were runners-up. We congratulate the captains of the two teams and thank C. Krishna for his intelligent game.
We congratulate our former Captain, P. Vettivetpillai on his success in gaining admission to the Ceylon University, Our success this year has been due to the efforts of our energetic and tactful captain, S. Satchithanantham. We are also indebted to a great extent to C. Krishna and V. Suntharalingam for their able guidance I should indeed be failing in my duty if I did not thank the House Masters, Mrs. Kanthasamy, the Office-bearers and the members of the House for their whole-hearted co-operation. We look forward to greater success in the nxet season.

For the third time in succession we ran away with the Inter-House Athletic championship, though there was some talk before the meet that we should lose this distinction. To the dismay of the other Houses, we were regular in winning event after event. Our Athletic Captain did a fine job in getting the best out of our boys. He also kept our colours flying in the J. S. S. A. Sports Meet. Our congratulations to him and his team for bringing honour to the House and the College. This meet revealed that there is on abundance of talent in our House. The future is therefore secure.
Our House Captain proved to be a tower of strength and a source of inspiration to all. The House says “thank you” to him. Then there are so many to whom we cannot unfortunately refer to by name, whom we cannot thank enough but, all the same we appreciate the help they have rendered us. All of us worked together - which after all is the real test of a great team. We gallantly look forward to the coming year and to more victories to our name.

The year 1954 has been to us a promising though by no means a successful season. Our Athletic Team did not succeed as expected.
We cannot expect to be champions for ever, for we too, must learn to take defeat and this defeat came to us when we put up a very disappointing show at the Annual Inter House Athletic Meet. In the Post - Senior, Intermediate and Junior items we were not represented sufficiently well. If they were we would undoubtedly have been the Champions for this year. We took up defeat in the true sporting manner. We hope to do better in the years to come.
Our House Captain, S. Navarajah who places his faith on the proverb “Patience produces roses’ is very energetic and painstaking. He helped us a great deal in various activities, especially in Athletics. Special mention should be made of T. Ganeshalingam who won the Senior Individual Championship and created a new record in the Hurdles and equalled the 220 yards record. He has subsequently run the 100 yards in 103 Secs, in the J. S. S. A. meet and in 102 Secs, in the J. S. A, meet. The performances of K. Navaratnalingam, S. Sahadevan, S. Sugirthanayagam, S. Kanagaratnam, S. Navarajah and S. Thiruchendur at the Inter - House Meet are worth mention ing. We congratulate Pasupathy House on winning the InterHouse Athletic championship.
We are glad to report that our Athletic Captain, T. Ganeshalingam has been elected Captain of the College Athletic Team for 1954.
In the Inter - House Senior Football Competition, our team easily became the undefeated champions under the captainship of K. Navaratnalingam.
We are happy to mention that the First Place in the last All Ceylon Religious (Hinduism) Examination was obtained by a member of our House.

The period under review (1953-54) has been one of the most active periods in the history of this association. Apart from our regular meetings at which distinguished persons addressed us or papers were read on subjects of historical and political importance, the most important event was the 750-mile tour to ruined cities and other places of historical and reli, gious interest during April 2-8 this year. The itinerary of the tour included Anuradhphra, Mihintale, Sigiriya, Dambulla Kandy, Peradeniya, Polonnaruwa, Trincomalee and Tampala kamam. The tour was a grand success. Our thanks are due to Messrs P. S. Cumarasamy and V. Mahadevan of the College
Staff for taking charge of the party and guiding them throughout the tour.

ஒருங்கே அமைந்து பொலிந்து விளங்கினன் தமிழன். இமய பொற்பிலே பொலிந்து கொடி பொறித்து ஈடின்றித் திகழ்ந் தான் தமிழன். வாணிபத்திலே வையமெல்லாம் தன் புகழ் பாப்பி இருந்தான் தமிழன். தான் சென்ற இடங்களில் எல்
லாம் கலையை வளர்த்து தமிழ்க் கலாச்சாரத்தைப் பாப்பினுன் தமிழன். நுண்மான் புலமை மிக்கவணுகக் காட்சி கொடுத் தான். * யாதும் ஊரே யாவரும் கேளிர் ' என்று கூறிப் பரந்த மனப்பான்மையோடு இருந்தான். பண்டைத்தமிழன் என்றதுமே பல்லாயிரக்கணக்கான ஆண்டுகட்கு முன் அவனி யில் அவதரித்த அந்த வீரத்தமிழன் உருவம் என் அகக்கண் முன் தாண்டவமாடுகிறது. புகழ் பொழிந்து வாழ்ந்த தமிழ னின் இன்றைய நிலை என்ன ? அன்று அனைவரையும் அடக்கி ஆண்ட வன் இன்று ஆமைபோல் அடங்கிக் கிடக்கின்றன். இது காசனத்தில் சிறப்புடன் வீற்றிருந்தவன் இன்று வீணனுய் விட்

குகந்ததல்லவென்று கூறித் தள்ளுகின்றனர். எல்லாத் துறை களிலும் தமிழைப் புறக்கணிக்கின்றனர். இராணி இலங்கைப் பாராளுமன்றம் திறந்த தினத்தன்று தமிழ் ஒழிந்த பிற மொழி களில் அறிவித்தல்கள் செய்து விட்டனர். இது தமிழருக்கு மிக வும் வரு த்தத்தை உண்டுபண்ணியுள்ளது. இங்கிலையைக் கண்டு பரிதாபமடைகின்றேன் தமிழன் வழித் தோன்றலாகிய நான். ஆபத்தான நேரத்தில் அனைவருந் தமிழிற்காகப் பாடுபடுவீர்கள் என நம்புகிறேன். ஆகவே தமிழர்களது ஒத்து  ைழ ப்டை வேண்டி நிற்கின்றேன்.
கல்லூரியின் வளர்ச்சி.
கிற்க, சமயமுறைப்படி நடாத்தப்படும் எங்கள் இந்துக் கல்லூரியில் தமிழுக்கும் தமிழ் வளர்ச்சிக்கும் அளிக்கப்பட்ட சலுகைகளைக் குறித்து நான் மிகவும் ஆனந்தமடைகின்றேன். தமிழன் தழைவிற்காகக் காலையும் மாலையும் இடைவிடாது பாடு பட்ட எங்கள் தமிழ்ப் பேராசிரியர் திரு. K. கார்த்திகேசு எங்களை விட்டுத் தற்காலிகமாகப் பிரிந்ததையிட்டு நான் மன வருத்தமடைகின்றேன். ஆனல் அவர் பல்கலைக் கழகத்திற் தனது சிந்தனைகளைத் தூண்டி விட்டுத் திரும்பவும் வந்து எங் கள் பாடசாலையில் கடமையாற்றுவார் என்பதை அறிந்து குது கலிக்கின்றேன். மேலும், பல வருடங்களாக எங்கள் கல்லூரி |9) გზა ஆசிரியராகக் கடமையாற்றிய திரு. T இராமசாமி அவர்கள் இளைப்பாறும் பொருட்டு எங்களை விட்டுப் பிரிவது மிகவும் கவலையை உண்டுபண்ணியுள்ளது. இருந்தபொழுதிலும்
அவர் வாழ்வு சிறப்பெய்தல் வேண்டுமென்பதே எங்கள் ஆசிை.
காலக் காற்ருடியின் வேகத்தால் எங்கள் பாடசாலை பல துறைகளிலும் வளர்ச்சியடைந்துள்ளது. கடந்த ஆங்கில எஸ். எஸ். ஸி. பரீட்சையில் எங்கள் பாடசாலையில் பதினுன்கு பிள்ளைகள் முதற் பிரிவிலும் மொத்தம் அறுபத்தினுன்கு பிள் ளேகள் சித்தியுமெய்தினர். அநேகம் பேர் பல் வேறு பாடங் களில் விசேட சித்தி பெற்ருர் . ஒருவர் ஆறு பாடங்களில்

பெற்றவர் அகில இலங்கையிலும் முதலாவதாக வருவார் என் எதிர் பார்க்கின்ருேம். எங்கள் பாடசாலையிலிருந்து எட்டு
கம்யூனிஸம் போன்ற குருவழிகள் மாணவர்கள் உள் |ளத்தைச் சூறையாடும். எங்கள் பாடசாலையில் ஒர் இந்து வாலிபர் கழகம் இருக்கின்றது. இக்கழகத்தில் நாயன்மார் குருபூசைகள் சாஸ்வதி பூசை போன்றவைகள் மிகவும் விமரிசையாகக் கொண் டாடப்படுகின்றன. சமயப் பரீட்சையிலும் எங்கள் கல்லூரியே இலங்கையில் முன்னணியில் கிற்கின்றது. இலங்கையில் உள்ள மாணவர்களுள் முதலாவதாகவும் இரண்டாவதாகவும் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றவர்கள் எங்கள் Lr_gr20 மாணவர்கள்ே. இங்ஙனம் சமயம் தழைத்தோங்குவதற்கு மூலகாரணமாக இருக்கும் திரு. M. மயில்வாகனம் அவர்களுக்கு நாங்கள் கடமைப்பட் டுள்ளோம்.
இதை விட விஞ்ஞானக் கழகம், சரித்திரக் குடியியற் கழகம் என்னும் இரு கழகங்கள் மிக உயர் நிலையில் நடாத்தப்படுகின் றன. கல்விக்குச் சுற்றுப் பிரயாண்ம் மிக இன்றியமையாதது என்பதையுணர்ந்த சரித்திரக் குடியியற் கழகம் மாணவர்களைச் சரித்திர சம்பந்தமான இடங்களுக்குச் சென்ற கோடை விடு முறையின்போது அழைத்துச் சென்றது. இச்சுற்றுப்பிரயா ணத்துக்கு மூலகாரணமாக இருந்த எங்கள் ஆசிரியர்கள் திரு. P. S. குமாரசுவாமி திரு. V. மகாதேவன் ஆகிய இருவருக் கும் எமது நன்றியைக் தெரிவிக்கின்ருேம். தற்போது பிலிம் கிளப்' (Film Club) ஒன்றை ஸ்தாபித்து மாணவர்களுக்கு கல்வி புகட்டக்கூடிய பாடங்களை நம் கல்லூரியில் காட்டுகின்ற ଜot it. இதன் வளர்ச்சிக்காக உழைக்கும் ஆசிரியர் P. S. குமாரசுவாமிக்கும் எமது நன்றி. -
முற்போக்கிற்காக முயற்சி செய்யும் திரு. M. கார்த்தி கேயன் அவர்கள் 8 டிப்லோமா ? (Diploma) பரீட்சையில் சித்தியெய்தியதையிட்டு நாம் எல்லோரும் பெரு மகிழ்ச் சி அடைகின்ருேம்.

நாம் புத்தகப் படிப்பில் திறமை காட்டியதோடமையாது விளையாட்டுத்துறையிலும் அதிக விருத்தி அடைந்துள்ளோம். யாழ்ப்பாணப் பாடசாலைகளுள் உதைப்பந்தாட்டத்தில் முதன் மையான ஸ்தானத்தில் இருக்கின்றது எங்கள் பாடசாலை. “கிறிக் கெற்' (Cricket) ஆட்டத்திலும் இவ்வருடம் வீரர்களாக எங் கள் பாடசாலை வந்துள்ளது. சில வருடங்களாக நாங்கள் கைப்பந்தாட்டத்தில் அதிக ஊக்கம் எடாதிருந்தோம். ஆனல் தற்பொழுது யாழ்ப்பாணப் பாடசாலை விளையாட்டுக் கழகத்தா ாால் நடாத்தப்பட்ட கைப்பந்தாட்ட போட்டியில் எங்கள் பாடசாலை சிறந்து விளங்கிற்று. எங்கள் பாடசாலையின் முக் கிய தேவையாக இருந்த விளையாட்டு மைதானத்தை நாம் பெற்று விட்டோம். சந்தர்ப்பம் உதவியளித்தால் மிகுதி இடங்களையும் பெற்றுவிடுவோம்.
விடுதிச்சாலை.
இப்பொழுது எங்களுக்கு அவசியமானது பல்கலைக் கழகப் பிரவேச வகுப்பு மாணவர்க்கான வகுப்பறைகளேயன்றி வேருென் றும் இல்லை என்றே நான் கூறுவேன்.
இலங்கையில் வீட்டுத்திண்டாட்டம் இருக்கும் இன்றைய நாளிலும் மிகச் சிறந்த முறையில் ஏறக்குறைய முந்நூறு மாண வர்களைக் கொண்ட ஒர் பெரிய விடுதிச்சாலையைப் பரிபாலிக்கும் திரு. K. S. சுப்பிரமணியம் அவர்களின் ஆற்றல் அளப்பரிய தல்லவா? விடுதிச்சாலையின் மிக அவசியமான போசன அறையை (Dining Hall) விரைவாக அமைத்த எங்கள் விடுதித் தந்தைக்கு நாங்கள் என்றும் கடமைப்பட்டுள்ளோம். யாழ்ப்பாணத்தில் மட்டுமன்றி இலங்கையிலேயே முதனிலை பெற்று விளங்குகின் றது எங்கள் விடுதிச்சாலை என்று கூறுதல் மிகையாகாது. மாணவர்கள் விரும்பிய உணவைத் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கும் பொருட்டு எ ங் கள் விடுதிச்சாலையில் ஒர் உணவுத்திட்டக்குழு (Food Committee) உள்ளது. ஜனநாயக முறைப்படி ஒவ்வொரு வகுப்பு மாணவர்களாலும் தெரிவு செய்யப்பட்ட பிரதிநிதிகளே இக்குழுவின் அங்கத்தினராக இருந்து உணவுத் திட்டத்தை வகுக்கின்றனர்.

எங்கள் விடுதி மாணவர்களது சொல்வன்மையும் மேடைப் பேச்சாற்றலையும் உயர் நிலைக்குக் கொண்டு வருவதற்காக எங் கள் விடுதித்தந்தை பல்வேறு விடுதிக் கழகங்களை அமைத்துள் ளார். இதைவிட விடுதிமாணவருக்கென ஓர் வாசிகசாலையும் உள்ளது. விடுதித் தந்தையாகிய திரு. K S. சுப்பிரமணியம் அவர்கள், தங்தை பிள்ளையின் முன்னேற்றத்தை விரும்புவது போன்று எங்கள் நலனுக்காகப் பாடுபடுகின்றர். அவரது சேவை களுக்கு எங்கள் மனமார்ந்த நன்றி. தனது இல்லக் கருமங்களை ஒருபுறம் ஒதுக்கி வைத்துவிட்டு காலையும் மாலையும் எங்கள் விடுதிக்காக உழைக்கும் விடுதி உதவி அதிபர் திரு. M. நவசி வாயம் அவர்கள் சேவைக்கு நாம் என்ன கைம்மாறு செய்வது ? தனக்கென வாழாது பிறர்க்கென வாழும் இப்பெரியாரையும் நாம் நினைவூட்டுவது மிகவும் அவசியமாகும்.
பொதுக்குறிப்பு.
பிரித்தானியர் செல்வத்திற்கு முற்றுகையிட்டு, முதன் முதலாக இலங்கையர் ஒருவர் இலங்கைக்குத் தேசாதிடதியாக நியமிக்கப்பட்டது போற்றக்கூடியது. மாட்சிமை தங்கிய திரு ஒலிவர் குணதிலக்காவிற்கு (Sir Oliver Gunetilleke) எமது வாழ்த்துக்கள். பதவிக்குத் தகுந்தவரைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்த மகா சாணியாருக்கு எமது நன்றி. இலங்கைத் தீவிற்கு விஜயஞ் செய்து சாம்ராஜ்ய நாடுகளின் இறுகிய தொடர்பை நிலை நாட் | 19. அதிககாலமாக நிவர்த்தி செய்யாதிருந்த இலங்கை இந் தியப் பிரச்சனையை எல்லோருக்கும் உகந்த முறையில் நிவர்த்தி செய்த இலங்கை இந்தியப் பிரதமர்களுக்கு நாம் எல்லோரும் கடமைப்பட்டுள்ளோம். தமிழ் இனம் சீர்குலைந்திருக்கும் இன் றைய நாளிலே பாக்கு நீரிணையை ஒரு மூச்சிற் கடந்து பண்டைத் தமிழன் புகழை கிலைநாட்டிய திருவாளர் முருகுப்பிள்ளை நவரத்தினசாமி நீடுழி வாழ இறைவன் கருணை புரிவாாாகுக. ஏழு வருடங்களாக மக்கள் மனதைக் கலங்கச் செய்த இந்து சீனப் பிரச்சனையைத் தீர்த்த பிரான்சு தேசப் பிரதமரின் திறம் முடிவு சாலவும் நன்றே.

தமிழைத் தமிழன் பேச எழுத வெட்கிக்கும் நேரத்திலே *இந்து இளைஞன்' இளவேனிற் காலத்தில் உயர்நிலை எய்தி உயிர்த்துடிப்புடன் தோன்றுவது போற்றற்குரியதொன்றே. மூன்று திங்களுக்கு ஒரு முறை வெளிவந்த இந்து இளைஞன் இன்று சில வில்லங்கங்களால் வருடமோர்முறை உதயம் செய் தாலும் பொலிவும் சீரும் சிறப்பும் ஒருங்கே அமையப்பெற்றே இருக்கின்ருன் திட்பநுட்பமான கருத்துக்களையும் இன்சுவை சொட்டும் பாக்களைபும் எழுதி இந்த இதழை மலர வைத்துள்ள இளஞ்சிருர்களின் தமிழார்வத்தையும் சொல்வன்மையும் பொருட் செறிவையும் குறித்து நான் அளவிலா ஆனந்தமடைகின்றேன். இச்சிறு எழுத்தாளர்களின் எதிர்காலம் மிக உன்னத நிஜலயை

தமிழக வரலாற்றின் இருபதாம் நூற்ருண்டு தனியிடம் பெறத் தக்கது. பலகாலம் அங்கியரின் ஆட்சியில் அடிமையாக வாழ்ந்த காடு, உரிமையுணர்ச்சியால் உந்தப்பட்டு உறக்கத்தில் நின்றும் விழித்தது. தன் நிலையையும் எண்ணியது. மொழியுணர்ச்சியும் கலையுணர்ச்சியும் மக்களுள்ளத்தில் கனன்று எரிந்தன. உரிமைப் போராடச் செய்த பெருமை ஒரு சிலருக்கே உண்டு. அவருள் தமிழ்த்தென்றல் திருவாரூர் வி. கலியாணசுந்தரஞரும் ஒருவர்.
ஆராய்ச்சி சிறிதும் இல்லாமல், கண்டவொரு குணத்தையே கொண்டு போற்றுவது, அல்லது குறையையே கொண்டு தூற் றுவது, இரண்டையும் ஆராய்ந்து குணம் மிகுந்ததை ஒதுக்கா மல், சிறிதளவுள்ள குணத்தையோ குறையையோ கொண்டு

விரும்புவது, அல்லது வெறுப்பது; அல்லது ஒன்றை விரும்பி அதில் மயங்கி அதற்காக மற்றதை வெறுப்பது. இதுவே மனித வியல்பு. ஆயினும் ஒரு சிலராலேயே இதற்கு மாருக கடக்க முடிகிறது. திரு. வி. க வும் இத்தகையோருள் ஒருவரே.
ஆங்கிலம் உலகப் பொதுமொழி. அதுமட்டுமன்றித் தமிழ
ருக்கு ஒரு புதுமொழி. அதிலேயுள்ள புதுமை தமிழ் மக்களைக்
கவர்ந்தது. அவர்கள் அதை விரும்பினர்கள். அதன் சுவையிலே
மயங்கினர்கள். அறிஞர்களெல்லாம் தம் கருத்துக்களை ஆங்கிலத்
திலேயே வெளியிட்டனர். பத்திரிகையுலகம் ஆங்கிலத்தைப் போற்றி அம்மொழியிலேயே வெளிவந்தன. தமிழ்மொழி பொது மக்களின் காவில் அரை குறையாக நடமாடியது. தமிழ்ப்பத்திரி கைகளில் தமிழ் ஆங்கிலக் கலப்புடன் தன்றுாய்மையிழந்து தோன் றியது. இந்நிலையில் திரு. வி. க தமிழ் மொழியின் தூய்மையை யும் இனிமையையும் காப்பாற்றி, “நவசக்தி' என்னும் தமிழ்ப் பத்திரிகையையும் வெளியிட்டார். அரசியற் கருத்துக்கள், அருங் கலைவிருந்துகள், அறிவுரைக் கொத்துக்கள், இன்னும் இவை போன்ற பலவும் தீந்தமிழ்த் தேன் சொட்ட கற்ருேரும் மற்ருேரும் எளி தில் விளங்குமாறு நகசக்தி திகழ்ந்தது. திரு. வி. க ஆங்கிலத்தை விரும்பினுலும் அதில் மயங்கவில்லை. அதனலேயே அவரால் தமிழ் மொழியைப்போற்ற முடிந்தது.
கடவுளையடைவதே எல்லாச் சமயங்களின் நோக்கம். ஆயின்
அவைகள் கைக்கொள்ளும் வழிகள் வேறு. அவை பெரும்பாலும் அக்காட்டு இயற்கை நிலைக்கேற்ப மாறுபட்டிருக்கும். இதைப் பலரறிவதில்லை. அதனுலேயே சமயச் சண்டைகள் உண்டாகின் றன. அவர்களால் கடவுளை யடைய முடிவதில்லை. இதை உணர்க் தவர் திரு. வி. க. சமயச்சண்டையிலும் பார்க்க காத்திகம் நல்ல தென்பது அவர் கருத்து. முதலில் எல்லாம் வேறுபட்டிருந்தா
லும் பின்பு அவையொன்ருகவே தோன்றும் என்பதே அவர் அவர் துணிவு. பன்மையில் ஒருமை காணும் உத்தமர் அவர். இதனலேயே எல்லா மதத்தினருடனும் பழக முடிந்தது முருகனே வணங்கிய கை இயேசுவையும் தொழுதது; புத்தரையும் போற்றி யது. தேவாரம் ஒதிய 15ா பைபிளேயும் படித்தது இதை மற்ற வர்களின் வாழ்வில் காண்பது அரிது. ஒற்றுமை நாடும் பெரு வாழ்வு அது.
இயற்கையே இறைவனின் உடல் என்பது திரு. வி. க வின் கருத்து. இயற்கைக் காட்சிகளைக் கண்டு அவ்வின் பத்திற்

ணுெளியும், ஒடும் புனலின் அழகும், மலர் நிறை பொழிலின் எ/ லும், இன்னும் இவைபோன்ற பிறவும் இயற்கையன்னையளிக்கும் பெரும்விருந்தாகும். “முருகன் அல்லது அழகு' என்னும் நூலில் ‘இயற்கை வாயிலாக இறைவனைக் காண்டல் வேண்டும் என்னும் எண் ணம் முதல் முதல் கெஞ்சில் உறைந்து நிற்றல் வேண்டும். அவ்வெண் ணம் முதிர்ந்து, முதிர்ந்து, புலன்களை இயற்கையிற் கடவுகிறது. புலன்கள் இயற்கையில் படிந்து படிந்து அவ்வியற்கையின் கண் பொலியும் வடிவிலா அழகை உள்ளத்துக்கு உணர்த்துகின்றன", என்று கூறுவதிலிருந்தே அவருக்கு இயற்கையின் கண்ணுள்ள ஆர்வம் புலப்படுகிறது.
இயற்கையைப் போற்றியவர் இளமையைப் போற்றவும் மறக்க வில்லை. இயற்கையழகெல்லாம் திரண்டு விளங்குமோருருவமே பெண்ணென்பது அவரின் கருத்து. படைப்பில் ஒரு பாதி பெண். உலகத்தோற்றத்துக்கு உதவியாயிருப்பவள் பெண். இத்தகைய பெண்ணை வெறுக்கிள்றனர் பலர். பெண்ணடிமையை எதிர்த்து அவர் எழுதாத நூல் இல்லை; ஏருத மேடையில்லை. யோகம் யோகமென்று புலன்களை ஒடுக்கியொடுக்கிக் கெடுத்துக்கொள்ளும் யோகிகளை அறவே வெறுத்தார். அவர்களின் அறியாமையை கினைந்து வருந்தினர்.
பிறர் வருத்தங் கண்டு வருந்துவதும் பிறவுயிரிடத்தில் அன்பு செலுத்துவதும் மனித மனத்தாலேயே முடிகிறது. பிறவுயிர்களால் முடிவதில்லை. ஆயின் அவ்வன்பின் முழுவுருவத்தையும் காதல் வாழ்விலேயே காணமுடிகிறது. பணத்திற்கும் புகழுக்கும் வாழும் வாழ்க்கை, பட்டத்திற்கும் பதவிக்கும் வாழும் வாழ்க்கை, அன் பற்ற வாழ்க்கை, அறமற்ற வாழ்க்கை, நெடுங்காலம் நீடிப்ப தில்லை. அன்பு மலர்ந்த வாழ்க்கை, அறம் மலிந்த வாழ்க்கை, அருள் கனிந்த வாழ்க்கை, அழிவின்றி நெடுங்காலம் நிலவுவதைக் காணலாம். இதுவே இயற்கை வாழ்வு. இத்தகைய வாழ்க்கையே திரு. வி. க வும் விரும்பினர். சமயம் நேர்ந்தபோதெல்லாம் இல் லறத்தின் சிறப்பையும் காதல் வாழ்வின் இன்றியமையாமையையும் எடுத்துரைத்தார்.
நாடு திருந்த வேண்டுமானல் மக்கள் திருந்தவேண்டும் அவர் களின் மனம் பண்படவேண்டும். பண்பட்ட மனம் பிறப்பில் உயர்வு தாழ்வு கருதாது. சிலரைத் தீண்டாதா ரென்றும், சிலரைத் தீண்டத் தகுந்தவரென்றும் வேற்றுமை பாராட்டாது திரு. வி. 4 வின் மனம் காங் தீயத்தைப் பின் பற்றியது. 'பிறப்பொக்கும் எல்லாவுயிர்க்கும்' என்னும் கொள்கையைக் கடைப் பிடித்தது. அதனல் அவரின் மனம் ஒரு சிலரை ஒதுக்கித்தள்ளும் வழக்கத்தை

வெறுத்தது. அதற்காகவே போரிட்டது. சமயப்பூசலை எங்ங்னம் இழிவுடையதாகக் கருதினரோ, அதேபோல் சாதிச் சண்டையையும் கருதினர். தம் வாழ்க்கையின் முக்கிய நோக்கமாக சாதிவேற்று மையையொழிப்பதையே கொண்டார். அதற்காகவே உழைத்தார்.
இங்ங்னம் திரு. வி. க தமிழகத்தை உருக்குலைக்கும் பல கொடுமைகளை எதிர்த்துப் போராடினர். தமிழகத்தின் உயர்ச்சியை, பண்பட்ட நிலையையே தம் வாழ்வின் நோக்கமாகக் கொண்டார். அதற்காகவே தம் வாழ்வையற்பணித்தார். 15ாட்டைச்சீர்குலைக்கும் தீண்டாமை, மதவெறி, பெண்ணடிமை, சமயப்பூசல் முதலிய வற்றை எதிர்த்து, பிறப்பில் எல்லோரும் ஒத்தவர்கள், சமயங்கள் எல்லாம் கூறும் கடவுளர் ஒருவர் என்பதை உலகிற்குணர்த்தி, பெண்ணுெடு கூடி வாழ்தலே அறம், அதுவே இயற்கை, இல்ல றத்தை வெறுத்துக் காட்டிற்கே கிப் புலன்களை வருத்துவது இயற் கைக்கு முரண்பட்டது என்று கூறி, மன்பதையிற்றேங்கியிருந்த ஊழல்களை யகற்றுவதே தம்வாழ்வின் குறிக்கோளாகக் கொண்டு அதற்காகவே அல்லும் பகலும் பாடுபட்ட ஒருவரின் அடிச் சுவட்டைப்பின்பற்றி நடந்தால் தமிழகம் தானுகவே உயர்நிலை யடையுமென்பது வெள்ளிடை விலங்கலென விளங்குகின்றதன்ருே ?

பல மொழிகள் நம் தீந்தமிழுடன் கலந்து தமிழின் எழிலையும், இனிமையையும், மென்மையையும் பறித்துவிட்டன. முன்பு பொருட்கள் கடன் வாங்குவதுபோன்று இன்று மொழியிற்பல சொற்களைக் கடனுக வாங்கியுள்ளனர் சோம்பேறிகளான சில ஈழத்தார். கடன் வாங்கிய பொருளென்ருல் திருப்பிக் கொடுக்க
வேண்டுமென்று அஞ்சுவார்கள். மொழியில் வாங்கிய கடன்
கொடுக்கவேண்டியதில்லை என்றதை அறிந்தே இந்த முற்போக்
குக்கு முட்டுக்கட்டையாக இருக்கும் முட்டாட்கள் பிற மொழி யிலிருந்து கடன் பெறுகின்றனர். இங்ஙனம் கடன்படுவதால் நம் இனிய மொழியிலுள்ள பல சொற்கள் வழக்கொழிந்துவிட் டன. இவ்விதம் நாம் தொடர்ந்து கடன்பெற்றபடியே இருப் போமானுல் தமிழன்னை பிறமொழிக் கலப்பால் மிகவிரைவில் குன்றிவிடுவாள் என்று கூறவேண்டியதில்லை. இந்நிலையைப் போக்கி மங்குந்தமிழிற்குச் சாணபிடித்து ஒளியேற்றுவதற்குத் தேவையானது ஒர் தமிழ்ப் பல்கலைக் கழகமேயன்றி வேறென்று இலங்கைக்கென்று ஒர் தனிப்பெரும் பல்கலைக்கழகம் அமைக் கப்பட்டிருக்கும் இன்றைய சமுதாயத்தில் மக்கள் மணிப்புரவாள நடையையும்; அத்துடன் ஆங்கிலமும் தமிழும் கலந்த ஒருவித புது நடையையும் கைக்கொள்கின்றனர். இவ்வித விசித்திர நடைகளால் தமிழின்கிலை மிகப் பரிதாபப்படவேண்டியிருக்கிறது. இதற்கு முற்றிக்கையிட்டு மொழியிலும் நடையிலும் தமிழ் வசனம் வளமும் வளைவும் அழகும் வேகமும் பெறுவதற்கு ஒர் தமிழ்ப் பல்கலைக் கழகமே மிக அவசியமானதென்பது வெள்
விடைமலை ஆபத்தான இந்நேரத்தில் தமிழ்ப் பல்கலைக் கழகத் தின் அவசியத்தைக் குறித்துச் சிந்தனவெளியில் ஆலோசிப்பது
ஈழத்தில் இன்று மொழிப் பிரச்சினையிலிருக்கின்றது. தமி முகமாகிய ஈழத்தில் தமிழிற்கு இடமில்லை. மொழிப் பிரச்சினையை நிவிர்த்திசெய்யும் பொருட்டு ஆங்கிலத்தை ஆட்சியினின்றும் அலுவலகங்களினின்றும் இல்லாமல் ஒழித்தல் இன்னல்களை விளை விக்கும் எனக் கருதுகின்றனர். சிலர் இன்று தமிழ் முன்ன ணிையில் நிற்பது அநாகரிகத்திற்கிடமென நினைத்து மேலைத்தேய
மோகமொழியாகிய ஆங்கிலத்தை இறுக அணைக்கின்றனர்.
 
 
 
 
 

மலர் 1954
இன்று ஆட்சி செலுததுவோர் தமிழில் விஞ்ஞானங்கற்பது இயலாத காரியமென்றும், தமிழில் விஞ்ஞான நூல்களே மொழி பெயர்ப்பதற்குகந்த சங்கேதச் சொற்கள் போதியளவு காணப் படவில்லையென்றும் கூறுகின்றனர். இதைக் கேட்டுத் தமிழர் குருட்டு நம்பிக்கையுடன் குனிந்திருக்கின்றனர். அரசாங்கத்தார் அங்கிய மொழியாகிய ஆங்கிலமே விஞ்ஞானமொழி என்று எண்ணுகின்றனர்போலத் தெரிகின்றது. 'தனிமைச் சுவையுள்ள சொல்லை எங்கள் தமிழினும் வேறெங்கும் யான் கண்டதில்லை' என்று தமிழினப் பாராட்டுகின்றன் பாரதிதாசன். இத்தகைய இனிமையான மொழியின் சீர்தனைக் குறைத்துக் கூசாமற் கூறு வதற்குக் காரணம் நம் ஈழத்தில் ஓர் தமிழ்ப் பல்கலைக் கழகம் இல்லாமையே. ஈழத்தில் ஓர் தமிழ்ப் பல்கலைக் கழகம் இருந்தால் தமிழில் நூல்கள் மொழிபெயர்த்தல் : தமிழில் ஆராய்ச்சி செப் தல் முதலிய கஷ்டங்கள் தோன்றியிருக்கமாட்டா.
ஈழம் ஓர் சுதந்திரநாடு, சுதந்திரம்பெற்ற தன் தாயகத்தில் தமிழன்னை தலைநிமிர வழியின்றித் தாழ்த்தப்பட்டிருக்கின்ருள். தாய்மொழியிற் கதைக்க இன்று வெட்கிக்கின்றனர் மேலைத் தேயமோகத்தாற் கட்டுண்டகாமிகள் 'அப்பு : ஆய்ச்சி; என்றவையெல்லாம் இன்று 'ட( ; மம்மீ டார்விங்' என உருவெடு த்துவிட்டனவென்று ஒருவர் கூறிக் தமிழின் நிலையைக் குறித்து மிகவருத்தப்படுகின்மூர், இல்லக்கிழக்கி அல்லது மனைவி என்று அழைக்கும் கணவனே அநாகரிகமானவன் எனக் கருதுகின்ருள் இன்றயை பெண். 'டார்லிங்' என்றவுடன் குது கலிக்கின்ருள். இதுதான் சுதந்திரத்தின் முக்கிய விளைவு. இன்
னும், தாய்மொழியைக் கற்ருேசெல்லாம் அாைச்சாண் வயிற்றை நிரப்ப வழியின்றி ஆண்டியாய் அலைந்து தவிக்குமிந்த நாட்டிலே தாய்மொழியைக் கற்க இடமில்லாத இவ்விலங்கையிலே சுதந்தி ாமா : அற்ப ஆங்கிலங்கற்றவன் ஈழத்தில் இன்று ஏழடுக்கு மாளிகையிலே ஏழைத் தமிழன் ஒலத்தைக் தாலாட்டாகக் கொண்டு வாழ்கின்முன். ஆனும் பாடுபட்டு பலதும் படித்துப் பண்டிதனைவன் மரியாதையின்றி, தக்க ஊதியம் இன்றி ஏழ் மையைத் தோழமைபூழ்கின்ருன் தன்மொழியாகிய தமிழைக கற்முேனைக் தாழ்த்தி, அங்கிய மொழியைக் கற்ருே ணுக்குச் சலுகைகள் செய்யும் இவ்விழம் சுதந்திர நாடெனக் கூறுவது

ஈழக்கிற்கு ஒர் சிங்களப் பல்கலைக் கழகம் ஏன் அவசிய மில்லை என்று சிலர் கேட்கக்கூடும் ? மொழிவழிச்சென்று ஆராய்ந்த அன்பழகன் தமிழினின்றும் தோன்றிய ஓர் மொழியே சிங்களம் என்று முட்டறுத்துக் கூறுகின்ருன், ஈழம் என்ற சொல்லும் ஒர் தமிழ்ச்சொல்லின் ஊற்றே. ஆகவே தமிழ்த் தாயகமாகிய ஈழத்தில் முதற்முேன்றிய மொழியாகிய தமிழிற்கு ஓர் பல்கலைக் கழகம் நிறுவுதல் முதற்கடனன்றே ! இத்துடன் இன்றைய அரசாங்கம் பேராதனைப் பல்கலைக் கழகத்தைச் சிங் களப்பல்கலைக் கழகமாக்கும் போற்ருேன்றுவதால் ; தள்ளாடுங் தமிழிற்கு ஒர் பல்கலைக் கழகம் மிக அவசியமானதே.
சிலர் பேராதனைப் பெரும் பல்கலைக் கழகம் தமிழ் கற்பிக் கின்றதே : ஈழத்திற்கு ஓர் பல்கலைக் கழகம் எதற்காக எனக் கூக்குரலிட்டுக் கொக்கரிக்கின்றனர். பேராதனையில் தமிழிற்கும் தமிழனுக்கும் அளிக்கப்பட்டுள்ள சலுகைகளைச் சற்று உற்று நோக்குவோமாக. தமிழ் மகிழ் நன்மாணவன் ஒருவன் தமிழ் அதிகங் கற்று வெளியே வரவேண்டுமென்ற சிந்தையுடையவ ய்ைப் பேராதனை சென்று பெரியதொரு ஏமாற்றமடைந்துள் ளான் அவன் தனது ஏமாற்றத்தை மனக்கொதிப்புடன் பின்
வருமாறு கூறுகின்றன்.
'தப்பாமல் தமிழ் நூல்கள் பலவாசித்துத்
தமிழ றிவைப் பெருக்கிடவேண்டு மென்ற வெப்ப முள்ள மனத்தோடு வந்தேனிங்கே வெறுங் கோயில் தனக்கண்ட பத்தணுனேன்.”

இவையனைத்தும் தமிழன்னை இன்றைய ஈழத்தில் இறக்கும் நிலையிலிருக்கின்முள் என்பதைப் படம் பிடிக்கின்றன. வெள்ளம் வருமுன் அணை கோலுதல் அவசியம். ஆகவே பண்டுதொட்டுச் சிறப்புடன் வாழ்ந்த தமிழன்னையின் தள்ளாட்டத்தைப்போக்கி, தலையை கிமிர்த்தி, அத்துடன் தேமதுரத் தமிழோசைதனத் தாணியெலாம் பரவ வைக்கவல்ல ஒர் பல்கலைக் கழகத்தை நிறுவி நாம் இன்புறுவோமாக, இன்று நாளை என்று தவணைபோடாது உடனடியாக ஓர் தமிழ்ப்பல்கலைக் கழகத்திற்காக முனைவோம்.

என்பது பொய்யா மொழியாகிய வள்ளுவனர் வாக்கு ஒருவ னுடைய கற்பனைக்கு எட்டாது எண்குணத்தான் என்று போற்றப் படும் இறைவனுடைய திருவடியைப்பற்றி நிற்போரே இடையில் லாத இன்பத்தில் திளைத்து நிற்பர் என்று அருள் வல்லார் கூறு வர். அந்தத் தாயிற்சிறந்த தாயான தத்துவனுடைய பாதத்தைத் தேடி அலைந்தோர் பலர். ஆனல் அதைப்பெறும் பாக்கியம் பெற்று அதனுல் பெறவேண்டிய பேரின் பத்தைப் பெற்றவர் ஒரு சிலரே.
பெருமைக்கும் நுண்மைக்கும் ஒப்பிலாத இறைவனே எல்லோ ரும் நம்புவதில்லை. கடவுள் உண்டென்று சொல்பவர் எழுந்த அன்றே கடவுள் இல்லை என்று வாதிக்கும் நாஸ்திகரும் எழுந்து விட்டனர். ஆனல் உலகத்தில் ஒருவன் பெறுவதற்கு அரிதாகிய உணர்ச்சிப் பேற்றைப் பெற்ற பக்தர்கள் கடவுளை நம்பினர்கள். உணர்ச்சிவசப்பட்ட அவர்கள் வேத நெறி தழைத்து ஓங்குவதற்கும்; தமிழ், சைவம் செழித்து வளர்வதற்கும் உதவியாகப் பல பாடல் களைப் பாடினர். அவற்றுள் சைவர்களுக்கு இன்றியமையாததாக விளங்குவது பாராயணத்தேவாரமே.

பாராயணத் தேவாரம் என்ற சொற்ருெடர் பாராயணம் plus தேவாரம் என இரு சொற்களால் ஆக்கப்பட்டது. பாராயணம் என்பதின் பொருள் ஒதுதலாகும். தேவாரம் (தே plus ஆரம்) என் பதின் பொருள் தெய்வத்தன்மை பொருந்திய பாமாலை என்பதா கும். திருஞானசம்பந்தமூர்த்தி நாயனுர், திருநாவுக்கரசு 15ாயனுர், சுந்தரமூர்த்தி நாயனர் ஆகிய மூவரும் பாடிய அருட்பாடல்களையே தேவாரம் எனக் கூறுவர். இவற்றைத் தமிழ்மறை எனவும் அழைப்பதுண்டு. தொடக்கத்தில் பல்லாயிரம் திருப்பதிகங்கள் இருந்தன. ஆனல் இப்பொழுது நமக்குக் கிடைக்கக் கூடியவை களாக இருப்பவை எழுநூற்றுத்தொண்ணுற்றேழு பதிகங்கள் மாத்திரமே. ஏனைய இறைவன் திருவருளால் மறைந்து போயின. இவற்றைத் திரு5ாரையூர்ப் பொல்லாப்பிள்ளையாரது திருவருள் பெற்ற நம்பியாண்டார் 5ம்பிகள் ஏழு திருமுறைகளாக வகுத்து உலகிற்கு உதவினர். இவ்வேழு திருமுறைகளையும் அடங்கன் முறை என அழைப்பர்.
தவத்தால் பெரிய சிவாலய முனிவர் இவ்வடங்கன் முறையி னது பெருமையையும் இதனை நாடோறும் ஒதுபவர் வீடுபேற்டை வர் என்பதையும் அறிந்து அவ்வாறு ஒத விரும்பினர். பதிகங் கள் அதிகமாக இருந்தமையினல் அது முற்றுப்பெறவில்லை. ஆகவே அவர் சிதம்பரத்தை அடைந்து பஞ்ச கிருத்திய நடனத்தைப் புரி கின்ற நடராசப் பெருமானே வழிபட்டுத் தம் கருத்து முற்றுப் பெறும் வண்ணம் வேண்டினர். 15டராசப் பெருமான் அவருக்குப் பொதிய மலையில் உறையும் அகத்தியமுனிவரை அடையின் அவரு டைய கருத்து முற்றுப்பெறும் என அசரீரியாக திருவாய் மலர்ந் தருளினர். சிவாலய முனிவர் அதன் பின்னர் பொதிய மலையை அடைந்து மூவாண்டு அருந்தவம் செய்தார். அகத்திய முனிவர் கருணை கூர்ந்து அடங்கன்முறை முழுவதையும் எடுத்தியம்பி அவ ருக்கு அதிலடங்கிய இருப்பாடல்களின் பொருளையும் விளக்கினர். அவ்வட்டங்கன் முறையிலிருந்து இருபத்தைந்து திருப்பதிகங்களைத் திரட்டி அவைகளை முறையாய் ஒதினுல் அடங்கன்முறை முழுவ |தையும் ஒதிய பயன் கிடைக்குமெள்ற கூறி அவர் மறைந்தருளி ஞர். பின்னர் சிவாலய முனிவர் இவ்விருபத்தைந்து பதிகங்களேயும் முறையாக ஓதி சிவனடியைச் சேர்ந்தார். இவ்விருபத்தைந்து பதி கங்களேயே அகத்தியர் தேவாரத்திரட்டு என அழைப்பர். ஒருவர் நாடோறும் பாராயணம் செய்து அடங்கன்முறை முழுவதையும்

ஒதுகின்ற பயன் அடையலாம். ஆதலினல் இவ்விருபத்தைந்து தேவாரப் பதிகங்களையும் பாராயணத் தேவாரம் என்று கூறுவர்.

என்ற வெண்பா மூலம் கூறப்பட்டவாறு குருவடிவம், திருவெண் ணிறு, திருவ்ைந்தெழுத்து, திருக்கோயில், சிவனுடைய திருவுருவம், திருவடி, சிவார்ச்சனை, தொண்டு ஆகிய எட்டின் பெருமைகளையும் (360food Lou Jitt, உணர்த்தும் திருப்பதிகங்களை சிவாலய முனிவர் பொருட்டு அகத்தியனர் தொகுத்துக் கொடுத்தார்.
ஒருவர் ஞானத்தை அடைவதற்குக் குருவினுடைய துணை இன்றி யமையாதது. இதனைக் கூறிப்போந்த உமாபதிசிவம்,
*ஆரறிவா ரெல்லா மகன்ற நெறியருளும்

இத்தகைய மகிமையுடைய குரு வடிவத்தையே "தோடுடைய செவியன் கூற்று, பித்தா,' என்ற தொடக்கத்தையுடைய தேவா ரங்கள் கூறுகின்றன. இவை முறையே சம்பந்தர், அப்பர், சுந்தர ஆகியோரால் பாடப்பட்டன.
திருநீற்றின் பெருமையைக் கூறும் திருநீற்றுப் பதிகம் உமா தேவியாரின் தன்மையாக உள்ளதாகும். திருநீற்றை அணிபவர்கள் இம்மையில் செல்வத்தையும் மறுமையில் வீடுபேற்றையும் அடை வர் என்பதை இப்பதிகம் வலியுறுத்துகின்றது.
* துஞ்சலும்; காதலாகி; சொற்றுணை' என்ற தொடக்கங்களை யுடைய தேவாரப்பதிகங்கள் ஐந்தெழுத்தின் உண்மையை நன்கு விளக்கிக் காட்டுகின்றன. மந்திரங்கள் எல்லாவற்றுள்ளும் தலை சிறந்தது திருவைந்தெழுத்தே. மந்திரம் என்பதின் பொருள் நினைப் பவரைக் காப்பதென்பதே. இவ்வைந்தெழுத்தையும் ஒதுபவர் மலம் நீங்கப்பெற்று மெய்ஞ்ஞானத்தை அடைவர்.

கோவிலின் பெருமையைக் கூறப்போந்த 5ம் சமயகுரவர்கள் 'ஆரூர் தில்லை; தில்லை சிற்றம்பலமும்; காட்டூர்க்கடலை' என்று தொடங்கும் தேவாரங்களில் அவற்றை மிகவும் தெளிவாக உணர்த் துகின்றனர். இவ்வண்ணமே சிவபெருமானின் அருட்திருமேனியை "ஒருருவாயின; பாளையுடைக்கமு கோங்கு வடிவேறு; மருவார் கொன்றை' என்ற தொடக்கங்களையுடைய தேவாரங்களில் சிறப்பித்துள்ளனர்.
சிவபெருமானுடைய திருவடியே அத்துவிதமாகிய முத்தி நிலையைத் தரவல்லது. மேலும், அதுவே மெய்ஞானம் என்பது சைவசாஸ்திர முடிபு. இத்தகைய பெருமைவாய்ந்த அத்திருவடியை சமய குரவர் மூவரும் "பொடியுடை அரவணையான்; அந்தணுணுன்’ என்ற தொடக்கங்களையுடைய தேவாரங்களில் போற்றியுள்ளனர். ஆகவே அத்திருவடி நீழலை அடைவதற்கு காம் இடைவிடாது அருச் சனைகள் மூலம் இறைவனைப் போற்றி வழிபடவேண்டும். 'பந்து சேர்விரலான்; வேற்ருகி, கொன்று செய்த' ஆகிய தொடக்கங் களையுடைய தேவாரங்கள் அருச்சனை புரிவதற்கி உகந்தனவாகும் இறுதியில் மும்மலங்களால் பீடிக்கப்பட்டு என்றும் வருந்தும் ஆன்மா, சிவபெருமானுக்கு அடிமை என்பதை விளக்கும்பொருட்டு ‘வேயுறு தோளிபங்கன், குலம்பலம்: தில்லைவாழந்தணர்' என்ற தொடக்கங்களையுடைய தேவாரங்களை முறையே ஞானசம்பந்தர், காவுக்கரசர், சுந்தரர் ஆகிய மூவரும் பாடிமுடித்தனர்.
தேவாரங்கள் மந்திர சொரூபமானவை. இவை பசுகரணம் நீக்கி சிவகரணம் பெற்ற மெய்ஞ்ஞானிகளால் பாடப்பெற்றவை. ஆகையால் அவை சிவ வாக்குக்களேயாகும். இத்தகையத் தெய்வத் திருமுறையான தேவாரங்களை 5ாள் தவருமல் மனத்தூய்மை யோடு ஒதுபவர் அஞ்சாமை, செல்வம், ஞானம் முதலிய பெறற் கரிய பேறுகளைப் பெற்று இம் மண்ணுலகைவிட்டு நீங்குங்கால் சிவகதியடைவர் என்பதில் ஐயமொன்றில்லை.

நீச்சல் வீரன் நவரத்தினசாமி
இலங்கைக்கும் இந்தியாவி ற்கும் இடையேயுள்ள பாக்குத் தொடுவாயென்னும் முப்பது மைல் நீளமுள்ள ஜலசந்தியை ஒரே தடவையில் இயற்கையின் இன்னல்களையும் பொருட்படுத் தாது நீந்தி முடித்தவர் திரு. முருகுப்பிள்ளை நவரத்தினசாமி. இவர் 1909. ஆண்டு ஆவணித்திங்களில் 16 ம் திகதி தொண் டைமான் என்னும் கிராமத்தில் திரு. முருகுப்பிள்ளை என்பவ ருக்குப் புக்கிாாாகப் பிறந்தார். தன்னுடைய ஆரம்பக் கல்வியை தொண்டைமான் கிராமப்பள்ளியிலும், உயர்தாக்கல்வியை பருத்
கித்துறையில் இருக்கும் ' காட்லிக்" கல்லூரியிலும் பயின்ருர்,
பாடசாலையில் கல்வி பயிலும் பொழுதே ஆங்கிலக் கால் வாயை நீங்கிய வீரர்களின் தீரச்செயலை வகுப்பாசிரியர்மூலமாக அறிந்த இவர் தானும் ஏன் நீச்சலில் ஈடுபடக்கூடாது என கினைத்தார். மேல்நாட்டவரின் தீரச்செயல் இவரிடத்தில் பாக்கு f$f2.poroug கடக்கவேணும்' என்ற ஆசையை எழுப்பிற்று. இவர் தமது பத்தொன்பதாவது வயதில் விவசாயத்தின் மூல மாக அரசாங்கத்தில் பணியேற்றர். விவசாயத்துறையில் திற மையும், நேர்மையும் உள்ள இவர் தான் கடமையாற்றும் பகு திகளை இத்துறையில் மிகவும் முன்னேற்றத்திற்குக் கொண்டு வந்தார். புதுவிதமான கிருஷிக முறைகளையும் அவைகளுக் கேற்றபடி இயந்திரங்களையும் இணைத்து மிகவும் புகழ் எய்தினர். ஆகவே இவரை விவசாய இலாக்காவில் போஷகராக அரசாங் 35th, நியமித்தது.
வாலிப வயதில் லீலாவதி அம்மையாருடன் இல்வாழ்க்கை யில் இறங்கிய விரன் அவர் இறந்தபொழுது ஆற்றெணுத் துய ாக்கடலில் மூழ்கினர். மூன்று விரப் புதல்வர்களைத் தமிழ் நாட்டிற்கு ஈந்தபின் அவர் பார்மகளைத் தழுவிக்கொண்டார். இவ்வீரன் பலவிதமான ே தகாப்பியாசங்களினலும் தன்னுடைய தேகத்தை பாக்கு நீரிணையைக் கடக்கத் தகுந்தவாறு தேர்ச்சி பண்ணி வைத்திருந்தார். தமிழ் அன்னையின் தவப்புதல்வனுன

நவரத்தினசாமி சிறுபிராயத்திலிருந்தே எழுப்பப்பட்ட =9/oᏡᏭ-oᏡᏆ ! நிறைவேற்றும்பொருட்டு 1954-1; ஆண்டு பங்குனி மாதம் பகிருைம் திகதி வல்வெட்டிக் துறையின் கடற்கரையைச் சேர்க் தார். பல்லாயிரக்கணக்கான மக்களும், பிரதமரின் பிரதிநிதியான திரு. V. நல்லையாவும், வேறும்பல பிரமுகர்களும் சூழ மக்கட் சமுத்திரத்தின் ஆசியைப் பெற்று சிங்கக் கொடியை மகன் பிடிக்க தினகரனுக்கு வணக்கம் செலுத்தி வீராவேசத்தோடு வீரமொளி பகர்ந்து விறுபோல் கிளம்பினுன் மண்ணுலகத்தின் கலியுக மாருதி. இவருடன் இரண்டு மோட்டார்ட் படகுகளும் கட்டுமரங்களும் சகல வசதியோடும், டாக்டர், டொலிஸ் முத லியவர்களோடும் மாலை இரண்டரை மணிக்குக் கசையில் இருந்து புறப்பட்டது. இரவில் கித்திராதேவியின் கொடுமையையும், பக லில் பகலவனின் கொடுமையையும் பொருட்படுத்தாது அணைக்க முடியா ஆசையுடன் வரும் அலை அணங்குகளை ஆலிங்கனம் செய்தபடி இருபத்தெட்டு மைல் வரையில் நீந்திவிட்டார். ஆனல்
கோடிக்கரையைக் காணவில்லை.
இங்கிலையில் இயற்கை அன்னை பொருமையுற்ருே அல்லது தமிழ் விரன் தன்னைத் தாண்டிவிடுவான் என்ற ஏக்கத்தினுலோ நம் விான்னத் தாக்கத் தொடங்கினுள். அலைகள் மலைகளாயின; மழை பொழிந்தது; வானம் இருண்டது; கடல் கொந்தளித் கது விான் விட்டுக்கொடுப்பதாக இல்லை. அவன் கால்களும், கைகளும் அலைகளைக் கிழித்தன. விாஉடல் வீறுபெற்று எழுந் தது. ஆனல் இயற்கை அன்னே தன்னுடைய கடைசி ஆயுதமா கிய நீரோட்டத்தை ஏவினுள். செயற்கையை மனிதன் வெல்ல முடியும். ஆணுல் இயற்கையை எப்படி வெல்ல முடியும்? இயற்கை அன்னையின் பொருமையும், வாயுபகவானின் சதியும், ஆழியில் வசிக்கும் மச்சங்களின் கொடுமையும், சமுத்திரத்தில் இடை விடாமல் எழுந்த சுளி முதலானவற்றின் திருவிளையாடலுமே இவருடைய ஆசையை கிராசையாக்கின. கொந்தளிக்கும் கட லோடும், குமுறும் புயலோடும் சேர்ந்து இவனுடைய உள்ளம் குமுறியது; போராடியது. 8 இன்று சாத்தியமாகவில்லை இன் ைெருமுறை கடந்தே முடிப்பேன்' என் வஞ்சினங்கூறி மோட் டார்ப் படகில் ஏறினன் சமுத்திர ராசன்.

இத்தீரச்செயலைச் செய்யாது விானுக்கு கித்திரை வாவில் லைப்போலும். ஆகவே தன் வாழ்வின் இலட்கியத்தை மீண்டும் 1954-ம் ஆண்டு பங்குனி மாதம் இருபத்தைந்தாம் திகதி வியாழக்கிழமை மாலை நாலு மணிக்கு நீச்சலை ஆரம்பித்தான். இம்முறை யாழ்ப்பாண அஸைஸ் கமிஷனர் கிரு. குமாாகுல சிங்கமும், பருத்தித்துறை பாராளுமன்றப் பிரதிநிதி திரு. இராம லிங்கமும் வேறும் பல பிரமுகர்களும் இவரை வழி அனுப்பி னர்கள். இம்முறை இயற்கை அன்னை வீரமைந்தன்ரின் தீரச் செயலாகிய நீச்சலை இபை கொட்டாது பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருந் தான். அவனும் ஒருவிதமான எதிர்ப்புக்கும் சலிக்கவில்லை. இந்தியத்தாய் தனது தங்கையின் விசமகனை வரவேற்கப் புன் னகை பூத்தமுகத்துடனும் பூமாலைகளுடனும் கோடிக்கரையை நோக்கி வந்துகொண்டிருந்தாள். ஆரம்பத்திலே இருந்த ஆர்வத் துடனும் முகமலர்ச்சியுடனும் சலிக்காமல் கோடிக்கரையை அடைந்தார். கோடிக்கணக்கான மக்கள் கோடிக்கரையில் நின்று கோலாகலத்துடன் கோபாலன வரவேற்ருர்கள். மகாவிஷ் ணுவைப் போல் ஆழியில்எழும் அலைகளைக் தலையணையாகப்பாவித்து கித்திரை செய்யக்கூடியவனே கோபாலன் என்று கூறினல் அது மிகையல்ல. பிரமுகர்கள் வாகை மாலை சூடினர் நீச்சல் வீரனுக்கு. பின் காதலியைப்பெற்ற காதலனைப்டோல் அளக்கமுடியாத ஆனந்தத் தோடும் வெற்றியோடும் தாய் நாட்டிலிருந்து தன் நாட்டிற்குத் திரும்பினுன் கடல் கடந்த தமிழன்.
இவருக்கு இலங்கையின் பல பாகங்களிலும் அமோக வா வேற்புக் கிடைத்தது. ஆனல் இதையிட்டு அவர் அதிகம் சந் தோஷப்படவில்லை. காரணம் இவருடைய சகோதரிமார் தொடக் கம் சிநேகிதர்கள் வரையில் எல்லோரும் இவருடைய நீச்சலுக்கு முன் இவரைப் பையித் கியக்காரன், மூடன் என்று கேலிபண் ணரியதே. ஒருவன் ஒரு தீரச்செயலைச் செய்யுமுன்தான் அவ னுக்கு உற்சாகம் அளிக்கப்படல்வேண்டும். மாட்சிமை தங்கிய மகாராணியார் இரண்டாவது எலிஸபெத்தும், மேன்மை தங்கிய எடின்பசோ கோமகனும் தங்களுடைய உ லகச் சுற்றுப் பிரயா

இவருடைய வாழ்க்கையில் விதி சிறிதுகூட விளையாடிற்று. இன்பமான இல்லற வாழ்வில் துன்பப் புயல் வீசிற்று. கட்டிய கணவனையும் மூன்று ଜଙ୍ଖit: ', புதல்வர்களையும் கைவிட்டு கால னின் கையைப் பிடித்தாள் மனைவி. மணுளனைத் தழுவவேண் டிய மங்கை மண்மகனைத் தழுவினுள் நவரத்தினசாமி நீச்சலில் மட்டுமல்ல கணிதத்திலும், விவசாயத்திலும், நாடகத்திலும் வல்லுநர். இவர் இலங்கை வானெலி மூலமாக பத்து இலக் கங்கள் கொண்ட ஒரு தானத்தைப் பத்து இலக்கங்கள் கொண்ட மற்முெரு தானத்தால் மனதிற்குள் பெருக்கும் நுட்பத்தை ஜனங்களுக்குக் கூறினர். கடல் அரசன், கலியுக மாாதி, சமுத் கிர ராசன் எனப் பலவகையான புகழ்ச்சிக்குரிய பேர்களைப் பெற்று ஆடவரின் திலகம்போல்த் திகழ்கின்ருர் திரு. நவரத் தினசாமி. வாள் முனையிலும், பீரங்கி வாயிலும் தம் விர வளங்காட்டிய தமிழ் மைந்தரை நாம் அறிவேம். ஆனல் பொங்கு திரையிலே, ஆழ் கடலிலே, இயற்கையின் எதிர்ப்பிலே தன் வீரத்தைக் காட்டி வாகை மாலை சூடிய தமிழ் விரன் ஒருவன் உண்டானுல் அவன் இலங்கைத்தமிழன் ஈன்ற நவாக்கினசாமியே. இவருடைய சாதனை சரித்திரத்தில் ତutଶଙ୍ଖ எழுத்துக்களால் பொறிக்கப்படல் வேண்டும். எவறஸ்ட் சிகரத்தை அடைந்த டென்ஸிங், கிலாரி முதலிய விாரைப்போல் இவரும் பெயரும் புகழும் அடைவார் என்பதில் கிஞ்சித்தேனும் சந்தேகமில்லை.

சுந்தாத்தின் கழுத்தைக் குறிபார்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்தது மேலே தொங்கிக்கொண்டிருந்த தூக்குக்கயிறு. பல்லாயிரக்கணக் கான உயிர்களைப் பசியாற்றிய அக்கயிறு சுந்தாத்தின் பரிதாப நிலையைக்கண்டு பரிவுகொள்ளவில்லை. பட்சாத்தாடப்படவில்லை. நிாபாாதியான அவன் நிலையைக்கண்டு எள்ளி நகையாடுவது போல் வீசுங் காற்றிற்கு அசைந்தாடிக்கொண்டிருந்தது. இன் னும் சில நிமிடங்களில் அவனைப் பதைபதைக்கச் செய்யப்போ கின்றது அந்த பாசக்கயிறு. ஆனல் சுந்தாம். ' தனக்களிக் கப்பட்ட தண்டனைக்குத் தயங்கவில்லை. பாழும் இவ்வுலகில் இருந்து அவஸ்தைப்படுவதிலும்பார்க்க மாணமே மேல் என்று மனம் களிப்புற்முன், வன்? அவன் செய்த உபகாரத்திற்கு பிரதி யுபகாரம் இதுவேயன்றி வேமுென்றுமில்லை. தலை குனிந்தவாறு தரையைப் பார்த்தவண்ணம் விண்ணுலகமெய்கிய தாயைக் தியா னித்தான் கடைசிமுறையாக, அவன் தலை சுழன்றது.

நெற்றி வியர்வை நிலத்தில் சிந்தப் பாடுபட்டு உழைத்த சுந்தாம், நீதியாசர் தூானின் விலையுயர்ந்த காருக்கு நிலைமை யான சாரதியாக வந்து வாய்த்தான். கட்டுமட்டான தேகமும், அகன்ற நெற்றியும், பார்ப்பவர் மனத்தைப் பாவசப்படுத்தும் அரும்பு மீசையும், அவனே விரும்பும்படிசெய்தது. அதற்குமேல் அவனுடைய தங்கமான குணமே அவனை இங்கிலையிற் கொண்டு வந்துள்ளது. தூானும் சுந்தாத்தைத் தன் சாரதியென்றுகூடக் கருதாமல் தன் பிள்ளைகளிலொருவனுகவே கருதினர். சுந்தாத் துக்கு வரும் இன்பதுன்பங்களிலெல்லாம் அவரும் பங்கெடுத்துக் கொண்டாரெனினும் தனது உள்ளத்தைத் திறந்துகாட்டவில்லை. சுந்தாமு தான் ஒரு "சாரதி' என்ற பிரிவில் சலியாது உழைத் தான். தன் தங்கையை நல்வாழ்வு வாழவிடவேண்டும் ! என்ற அருமைத்தாயின் இறுதி வேண்டுகோளை, நிறைவேற்றுவதற்காகப்

அழகுமிக்க எழில் ராணி குறுகிய தேகமெனினும் இா கிய உடலமைப்புப் பெற்றவள். மாகிறமேனியும், வட்டமுகமும், கயல்மீன் விழிகளும், சிரித்த உதடுகளும் அவள் அழகிற்கு அணிகலன்களாகத் தோன்றின. இயற்கை அன்னகூட அவளது இடது கன்னத்தில் ஒரு கறுப்பு மச்சத்தை இட்டிருந்தாள். அவ ளது களங்கமில்லாப் பார்வை, அவளது உயர்ந்த குணத்தை விளங்கவைத்தது. இவ்வகைப்பட்ட அழகுராணியாகத் தோன்றி லுைம், அவளது வாழ்க்கை கூண்டிலடைக்கப்பட்ட கிளிபோன்று தான் இருந்தது. ஏன்? பறந்து திரிவதற்குப் பருவம் இடப் கொடுக்கவில்லை. சிரித்துவிளையாடினல் உரித்துவிடுவாாேயென்ற அண்ணனின் பயம் இவையெல்லாம் அவள் சுதந்திரத்திற்குத் திரைபோட்டது. அன்றியும் பணக்காரக் குடும்பத்தில் பிறந்தி ருந்தால் விட்டுவேஜல சமையல்வேஜல முதலிய பெண்களுக்கு வேண்டிய வேலைகளைப் பங்கஜம் என் கற்றிருக்கவேண்டும். கடற் கரையும், கையில் டெனிஸ் றக்கெட்டுமாகவே கிரிந்திருப்பாள். ஆனல் பிறந்துவிட்டாள் ஏழையின் வயிற்றில். இருந்தும் 6[(9ی(( வேலைகளில் கோழையல்ல அவள் சுந்தாம் உழைத்துக்கொண்டு வருவனவற்றைக்கொண்டே இருவரும் சீவித்தார்கள். நாட்கள் | law) gt.ങ്ങ്.

வாழ்வு கெட்டதையிட்டு வாடினுள், தாயை கினைந்து நிலை தடுமாறினுள். குழந்தைப் பாாயம் தொட்டு, தாயைப்போன்றும் தந்தையைப்போன்றும் வளர்த்துவந்த அருமைச் சோதரனுக்கு அவதூறு விளைத்ததையிட்டு அனலில் இட்ட மெழுகுபோல் அல்லல் உற்ருள். மாணிக்கத்திற்கு மாணசாதனை எழுத முயன் முள். முயற்சி செய்தாள் தடையிெல் ?
தூானுடன் வெளியூர் சென்றிருந்த சுந்தாம் தன் தங்கை யின் பரிதாப மாணத்தைப் பத்திரிகையிற் படித்தான். உடைந்த உள்ளத்துடன் ஒடோடியும் ஊர் சேர்ந்தான். அங்கே?

என்ற கடிதம் அவனை வரவேற்றது. சுந்தாத்தின் கைகள், கால்கள், சுருக்கமாக எல்லாமே நடுங்கின. தங்கையைக் கங்கைக் கனுப்பிய, மாணிக்கத்தைத் தேடினன், மனக்கொதிப்பால், ஆவே சத்தால், ஆத்திரத்தால் கொதித்தெழும் ஆத்திரத்தில் 'கொடுமை என்ன?' என்பதை மறந்தான். தன்னை மறந்தான். பல கன்னி யர்களின் களங்கமற்ற உயிர்களை விண்ணுலகுக்கு அனுப்பிய மாணிக்கத்தின் உயிர் மண்ணுலகில் ஊசலாடாமல், விண்ணுல கம் சென்றது. அவனது அச்செயலை பாராட்டாத மங்கையர் களே கிடையாது. *தொலைந்தான் மாணிக்கம்' என்ற கதை காட்டுத் திபோன்று ஊரெல்லாம் பரவிவிட்டது. ஆனல் நீதி: அவனைப் போற்ற மறுத்தது. கடைசியில் சுந்தாம்.?
தூக்குத் தண்டனை விதிக்கப்பட்ட கைதி. தங்கையின் வாழ் விற்காக, தன் அருமை அன்னையின் வேண்டுகோளுக்காக, தன் வாழ்வையே தூக்குமேடையில் அர்ப்பணம் செய்தான். இது வன்ருே தியாகம். வாழ்க சுங்தான் தியாகம் 1 சுந்தான் ஆத்மா சாந்திபெறுக.

அக்காலத்தில் மக்கள் எது பொருளைக் கண்டும் அஞ்சும் சுபாவம் உடையாாய் இருந்தார்கள். பேய், பிசாசு, மந்திரம், சூனியம் என்பன போன்றவைகளைப்பற்றிக் கேட்கக் கூட அஞ் சினர். பொது சனப் பொருளைக் கொண்டு தழைக்கும் அரசாங்கத் திற்கே அஞ்சி வாழ்ந்தார்கள். சிப்பாயையும் ஊர்ச்சேவகனையும் கண்டு மனம் பதைபதைப்பர். வஞ்ச சேர்களைப் பணிவர். இப் பேர்ப்பட்ட மாந்தரைக்கண்ட பாரதியார் 'நெஞ்சு பொறுக்கு தில்லையே' என்று இந்த நிலைகெட்ட மாந்தரின் கிலையை அக் காலத்தில் இருந்தபடியே கூறி அழுகின்ருர், கொடை வள் ளல் பாரி தன் நாட்டில் நோயால் வருந்தும் பலர் குடிக்கக் கஞ்சியின்றி மடிகின்றதைக் கண்ட பாரதியார் எண்ணிலா நோயுடையார்' என்று கூறுகின்ருர், மக்கள் அறியாமையால் மிருகங்களைப்போன்று வாழ்வதைக் கண்டார். குறளும், இலம் பும் தந்த பாரத நாட்டில் சுவர்களிற் சித்திரம் எழுதிக் காட் டினுற்முன் விளங்கும் என்னும் அளவிற்குக் கல்வியறிவு குன்றி யிருந்தது கண்டு துடித்தார். நாட்டில் சாதி மத வேறுபாடு கள் தலைகிற்பதைக் கண்டு “கொஞ்சமோ பிரிவினைகள் கோடி என்ருல் அது பொய்யாமோ' என்றும் 'சாதிகள் இல்லையடி பாப்பா' என்றும் நாட்டின் நிலையை நன்கு விவரிக்கின்ருர்,

ாண அடிமையைப்போல் பாவித்தது கண்ட பாாகியார் ‘மாதர் தம்மை இழிவு செய்யும் மடமையைக் கொளுத்துவோம்" என் றெடுத்து "தாதர் என்ற நிலைமை மாறி ஆண்களோடு பெண்க ளும் சரிநிகர் சமானமாய் வாழ்வோம் இந்த நாட்டிலே’ என்று முடித்தார். வறுமையின் கொடுமையால் பிற நாடுகளில் பிழைக்கச் செல்லும் தமிழ்த் தாய்மார் படும் துன்பங்களைக் “கரும்புத் தோட்டத்திலே’ என்னும் பாடல்மூலம் தமிழ் நாட்டிற்குக் கூறுகின்ருர்,
சிங்களம், புட்பகம், யாவகம் ஆகிய தீவு பலவற்றிலும் தங்கள் செங்கோல் செலுத்தினர் விாத்தமிழராம் சோ, சோழ, பாண்டிய மன்னர்கள். அப்பேர்ப்பட்ட தமிழரை வியாபாரத்தைக் குறிக்கோளாகக் கொண்டு வந்த ஆங்கிலேயர் தங்கள் பிரித் தாளும் திறமையால் அடிமைகளாக்கியது கண்டு மன்ம் துடித் தார். உத்தியோகவெறி கொண்டு அன்னிய ாெழியிற் கல்வி கற்கச் சென்ற காளைகளுக்கு தன் சொந்த ஆங்கிலக் கல்லூரி அனுபவத்தைக் கூறி தமிழ் மொழிபோல் இனிதாவதில்லை என்று பல காளைகளின் ஆங்கில ஆர்வத்தைத் தடுத்தார். அவர் தமி ழரை நோக்கி அடிமையின் அலங்காாமாய் மாடமாளிகையில் வாழ்வதைவிட இடிந்து பாழடைந்த சுதந்திர இல்லத்தில் தலை கிமிர்ந்து வாழ்வதே மேலென்று அடிமைத்தனத்தில் மூழ்கி மூழ்கி இருந்த தமிழகத்தைத் தட்டி எழுப்பினர். சாதிமத பேதமன்றி எல்லாருடனும் ஒரு குல உணர்ச்சியுடன் பழக வேண்டும். மனிதன் அமாத்தன்மை பெறவேண்டும் தமிழ னுக்குக் கலைக்கோவில் கட்டவேண்டும் என்று தான் கண்ட சமுதாயத்திற்கு விாமுழக்கம் செய்தார். அங்நாட்களில் ஆங் கிலேயர் தங்கள் ஆட்சியின் கீழ் கற்றவர்களையும், நல்லவர்களை யும் சுதந்திர ஆர்வம் உடையவர்களையும் சிறையில் இட்டு வருத் தினர்கள். அக்காலத்தில் சாதியின் பெயரால் நீதி கொலை செய்யப்படுவதைக் கண்டார். இவ்வாறு வெற்றிகரமாகப் பின் னடைந்திருந்த தமிழ் நாட்டை முன்னேறச் செய்யப் பாரதியார் மிகவும் பிரயாசைப்பட்டார். இவர் ஊன்றிய சுதந்திரம் என் னும் சிறு கன்றே நாளடைவில் வேரூன்றித் தழைத்துக் கனி யும் தந்தது. இவர் இதை முன்னறிந்தே "வீர சுதந்திரம் அடைந்து விட்டோம்" எனப்பாடி இருக்கவேண்டும். தமிழ கம் சுதந்திரம் அடைந்தது பாரதியின் பெருமுயற்சியாலேயே என்பது வெள்ளிடைமலை.

காலவேளை கதிரவனக் காணுேம் கடுங்குளிர் பிரான்சியக் செல்வர்களைத் தெருவில் காணவில்லை என்று செங்கதிரவனும் வர வில்லைப்போலும்! ஆனல் தலை நீட்டினல் தலையிலுள்ள இரத்தம் உறைந்துபோகக்கூடிய குளிரிலும் தூய்மை மனமுடைய மக்கள் கந்தலுடையுடன் கடும் பசிப்பிணிவாட்ட அலேந்து திரிந்துகொண் டிருந்தார்கள். அவர்களுக்கு காலில் பாதரட்சை இல்லை. அவர்களு டைய காலெல்லாம் பனியில் நடந்து வெடித்துச் கும்பிப்போய்
 

இருந்தன. அவர்கள் நடக்கும்போதெல்லாம் ஆயிரம் ஈட்டிகளைக் கொண்டு தாக்குவதுபோன்று வலியுண்டாகும். "பொறுத்தாரே அரசாள்வார்’ என்னும் முதுமொழிக்கிணங்க அதையும் பொறுத் துக்கொண்டு நடந்தனர்.
ஆனல் செல்வத்திலே பிறந்து வளர்ந்துவந்த செல்வர்கள் மாட மாளிகைகள் அமைத்து அறுசுவை உண்டி அருந்தி பட்டாடைகள் அணிந்து மகிழ்ந்திருந்தார்கள். அவர்களின் செல்வச்சீமாட்டிகள் விலையுயர்ந்த பட்டுக்களையும் முத்துக்களையும் அணிந்து மகிழ்ந்தார் கள். இவர்கள் இவைகளை அணிந்து மகிழ்ந்தார்களே ஒழிய, முத் துக்காக மூச்சடக்கி ஆழ்கடலில் மூழ்கினவனது கஷ்டத்தை ஒரு போதும் அறியவில்லை. தங்கள் கேளிக்கைகளுக்குப் பணமில்லையா னல் புதுப்புது வரிகளை இயற்றினர்கள்,
ஒரு நாள் உணவிற்கே வழியில்லாமல் திரியும் ஏழைமக்கள் காசைக் கண்ணுல்கூடப் பார்க்கவில்லை. அவர்கள் வரிசெலுத்த யாது செய்வார்கள். கொடுக்காவிட்டால் சவுக்கடியும் பாதாளச்சிறையும் அவர்களுக்கு வரவேற்பளித்தது. அவர்கள் அதற்கு அஞ்சினர்க ளில்லை. செல்வர்களிடம் எவ்வித கொடூரமான தண்டனைகளையும் பெற்றுக்கொண்டு காலத்தைப் போக்கிக்கொண்டு வந்தார்கள் நாய்க்குப்போட்ட உணவை ஒரு ஏழை எடுத்து உண்டால் சவுக் கடி, மக்கள் கூட்டம் திரளாகச்சென்று செல்வந்தர்களிடம் பசிப் பிணி தாங்கமுடியவில்லை என்று கண்ணீரும் கம்பலையுமாக முறை யிட்டால், சி, காய்களே பசியென்ருல் புல்லைத் தின்னுங்கள் தின்னு விட்டால் சாவுங்கள், இதுதான் எல்லாச் செல்வந்தர்களினதும் பதில். சிலவேளைகளில் அவர்களைத் தாக்கியும் விரட்டியடித்தார்கள்.
நெடுங்காலம் பொறுத்துவந்த மக்கள் பொங்கியெழுந்தார்கள். இதனேக்கண்ணுற்ற செல்வர்கள் கைக்குவந்ததை வாரிக்கொண்டு பிறநாடுகளுக்கு ஒடப்பார்த்தார்கள். ஆனல் மக்களின் வீரப்புரட்சி வீராவேசம்கொள்ளவே செல்வந்தர்களின் படையணிக்கோலம்பூண்ட வீரர்கள் பயந்து பகட்டில்லாத ஆடையணிந்த பாட்டாளிமக்களின் பக்கம் சேர்ந்தார்கள். தங்கள் பக்கம் கூடவே, மக்கள் செல்வந்தர் களைப் பிடித்துக் கொன்றும், லாம்புக்கம்பங்களில் தூக்கியும் கொன் முர்கள். காவலர்களுக்குக் கைலஞ்சம் கொடுத்துச் சிலர் பிறகாட் டிற்கு ஓடினர்கள். இதனல் கைலஞ்சம் வாங்கிய காவலாளர்கள் பலர் கொல்லப்பட்டார்கள்.
ஆனல் 1769-ம் ஆண்டு ஜூலை மாதம் பதிநான்காம் காள் வெற்றி, வீரமக்களுக்குக் கிடைத்தது. அந்த நாள் உலகசரித்திர ஏடுகளிலே பொறிக்கப்பட்ட பொன்னுள். பாட்டாளி மக்களின்

ஒர் காட்டின் நாகரிகம் கல்வி, ஒழுக்கம், பொருளாதாரம், அர சியல், சமயம், என்பனவற்றில் தங்கியுள்ளது. சுருங்கக் கூறினுல் எந்த நாடு நல்ல பண்பாடுடையதோ அங்காட்டு மக்களே நாகரி கம் உள்ளவர்களாக விளங்குவார்கள். நமது வாழ்வு இரண்டு பெரும் பிரிவையுடையது. ஒன்று அக வாழ்வு, மற்றது புறவாழ்வு.
அகவாழ்வு என்பது ஒருவனும் ஒருத்தியும் கொடுப்பாரும் அடுப்பாருமின்றி தாமே தம்முள் ஒத்து காதல்கொண்டு வாழும் வாழ்வு. புறவாழ்வு என்பது கல்வி கற்றல், பொருள் தேடல், அர சாட்சி செய்தல், ஆகியவற்றைப்பற்றியது.
அகவாழ்வாகிய காதல்வாழ்வு மிகவும் தூய்மையானது. ஒரு வர் ஒருத்தி இசைந்து வாழ்வது அது. இதன் உண்மையை இன் னும் மேனுட்டவர் உணர்ந்துகொள்ளவில்லை. 15ம் நாட்டுக் காதலில் ஒருவன் ஒருத்தி இடம் பெறுவர் ஆனல் மேனட்டுக் காதலில் ஒரு வன் பலரைக் காதலிக்கலாம். அவ்வாறே அவள் பலரைக் காத விக்கலாம்.

அத்தகைய அரசு கமது அரசு, அத்தகைய அரசு கமது காக ரிகம். ஆகவே மேனுட்டு நாகரிகத்திலும் நமது நாகரிகம் ஒழுக்கத் தால், அரசிறையால், சமய உணர்ச்சியால், அறத்தின் வழிவந்த பொருளாதாரத்தால், இவை அனைத்தும் சேர்ந்து பிறந்த பண்பாட் டினல் உயர்ந்தது என்று யான் மாத்திரமல்ல நீங்களே கூறுவதற்கு என்னழுதடையுண்டு.

என் வீடு'
'என் வீடு' என்றவுடன் எல்லோருக்கும் தங்கள் தங்களு டைய வீடுகளின் எண்ணம்தான் தோன்றும். வேறு சிலருக்கு சமீபத்தில் ' ராணி ' படமாளிகையில் காட்டிய ஒரு படத்தின் ஞாபகம்தான் வரும். ஆனல் நான் கூறப்போகும் ' என் வீடு' அவைகளல்ல. நானும் என்னுடைய சினேகிதர்கள் முந்நூறு பேரும் பல இடங்களில் இருந்து வந்து, ஒன்ருகத் தங்கி, ஒன்முக உண்டு: ஒன்ருக விளையாடி, ஒன்முகப் படித்து ஒரு அன்னையின் வயிற்றில் பிறந்த பிள்ளைகளைப் போல வளர்ந்து வரும் அந்த வீட்டையே கூறுகின்றேன்.

பத்து மாதம் சுமந்து, ஈன்ற பின், ஈ எறும்பு மொய்க் காது இனிது காத்து, நம்மை வளர்த்துவிட்ட அன்னைக்கு கம்மால் என்ன கைம்மாறு செய்ய முடியும்? நம்மிடத்தில் அன் புள்ள தாயைப்போல இந்த வீடும் இருந்து வருகின்றது தன்பால் உள்ள பிள்ளைகளைச் செல்வமாக வளர்த்து, அறிவு மிக்க மனிதர் களாக உலகத்திற்கு உதவும் நிலையில் இது அமைந்திருக்கின்றது. எனவே அதன் பெருமையை அங்கிருந்து வாழ்பவர்களன்றி வேறு ஒருவரும் அறியமாட்டார்கள்.
இவ்வீட்டில் ஏறக்குறைய முந்நூறு பேர் இருக்கின்ருேம். ஒவ்வொருவருடைய பெற்ருேர்களும் வெவ்வேறு இடங்களில் வெவ் வேறு நிலையில் உள்ளவர்கள். செல்வர், ஏழை, சாதி, மதம் என்ற வேற்றுமை தோன்ருது காங்கள் வாழ்கின்ருேம். எங்கள் எல்லோ ருக்கும் தந்தையாக இருக்கிருர் இவ்வீட்டின் அதிபர் K. S. சுப்பிர மணியம். இவரை எல்லோரும் 'K. S. S.' என்றே அழைப்போம், அவர் எங்கள் அனைவர்க்கும் உண்மைத் தந்தையாகவே இருந்து எங்கள் உடல், உள்ளம், அறிவு, ஒழுக்கம் முதலியவற்றின் வளர்ச் சிக்காகவே பாடுபடுகின்ருர்,
ஒவ்வொருநாளும் விடியற்காலையில் ஐந்து மணிக்கு மணி அடி படும். காங்கள் எல்லோரும் சுறு சுறுப்பாக படுக்கையிலிருந்து எழுந்து விடுவோம். பிறகு காலைக் கடன்களை முடித்துக்கொண்டு ஆறு மணிக்கு கல்லூரி மண்டபத்திற்குச் சென்று, தேவார திரு வாசகங்கள் பாடி கடவுளே வணங்குவோம். கள்ளமில்லாத மனத்

துடன் உண்மையாகக் கடவுளை வணங்குவது பார்ப்போருக்கு பெரும் வியப்பாகத்தான் இருக்கும். அதன்பின் 'கோப்பி அருந்தி விட்டு படிக்கச் செல்வோம். ஏழரை மணிக்கு எல்லோரும் மோட் டரில்' வரும் தண்ணீரில் குளிப்போம். குளித்தபின் காலைச்சாப் பாட்டை தவருது எட்டு மணிக்கே சாப்பிட்டுவிடுவோம். அதன் பிறகு புத்தாடை அணிந்து பாடசாலைக்கு எல்லோரும் மலர்ந்த முகத்துடன் உலகத்தையே மறந்து செல்வது பார்ப்பவர் கண் ணுக்கு ஆச்சரியமாகத்தான் இருக்கும்.
மாலை முழுவதையும் விளையாட்டிலேயே கழிப்போம். பின்பு படிப் போம். இரவு எட்டு மணிக்குச் சாப்பாட்டை முடித்துக் கொண்டு ஒன்பதரை மணிக்குப் படுக்கைக்குச் சென்று விடுவோம். இப்படி ஒவ்வொரு5ாளும் எங்கள் வாழ்க்கை மாறி மாறி இன்பமாகச் செல்லுகின்றது. இவ்வளவிற்கும் வசதி அளித்துள்ள யாழ்ப்பாண இந்துக் கல்லூரி விடுதிச்சாலையே "என் வீடு'

அன்பு
உலகத்தில் உள்ள பிராணிகளுக்கு உள்ளம் இருக்கின்றது. அந்த உள்ளத்தில் தோன்றுவதுதான் அன்பு, அது உணர்ச்சிவசப் பட்டது,
மனிதர்களிடம் மட்டும் அன்பாய் இருக்கவேண்டும் என்பதல்ல. மற்றும் ஆடு, மாடு, கோழி போன்ற எல்லா உயிர்களிடமும் அன் பாய் இருக்கவேண்டும். முற்காலத்தில் முனிவர்கள் இலைகளிடமும் அன்பாய் இருந்தார்களாம். அதைக் கிள்ளிஞலும் அது வருந்தும் என நினைத்தார்களாம். அப்படியானுல் அன்பு எவ்வளவு பெருமை யுடையது. அதை காங்கள் அளவிடமுடியாது. நாங்கள் வகுப்பில் படித்த பாப்பா பாட்டில் கூட ‘உயிர்களிடத்தில் அன்புவேண்டும்,' என்று உபாத்தியாயர் படிப்பித்தார்.
அன்பில் தாய் அன்பு, தந்தை அன்பு, சகோதர அன்பு என பல உண்டு. ஆனல் இவைகளைவிட நண்பர்களிடம் காணும் அன்பு தான் சிறந்தது. அம்மாகூட சிலநேரம் எங்களை ஏசுவார். ஆனல் நண்பர்கள் அன்பு அப்படியல்ல. அந்த அன்பை ஒருவராலும் பிரிக்க முடியாது. அந்த அன்பு உள்ளவர்கள் தங்கள் நண்பர்களுக்காக உயிரைக்கூடத் தியாகம் செய்வார்கள்.

*ஒருவரிடத்தில் அன்பு தானுக வராது. அது முற்பிறவியில் செய்த பாவ புண்ணியத்தின் பயன்தான்,' என்று அம்மா எனக்கு அடிக்கடி கூறியிருக்கின்ருர்,
அன்பினல் எதையும் செய்யலாம். ஒரு முரடனிடத்திலும் காம் அன்பாக இருந்தால் அவனும் எங்களைப்போல் அன்பாக இருக்கப் பழகிவிடுவான். “கோபம்பிடித்த யானேயையும் அன்பால் அடக்கி விடலாம்,' என்றுகூட அப்பா பலதடவை சொல்லி இருக்கின்ருர், இந்தப் பெரிய அன்பினுல்தான் புத்தர், யேசு, நபி, காந்தி முதலி யோர் உலகத்தையே வென்ருர்கள் என்று கான் பாடத்தில் படித் திருக்கின்றேன்.
ஆகையால் காங்கள் எல்லோரிடத்திலும் அன்பாய் இருக்க வேண்டும். அப்படி, அன்பு இல்லாதவர்களிடம் அன்பை வளர்க்க முயற்சிசெய்யவேண்டும். இதுவே மாணவர்களாகிய எங்கள் கடமை,
