DUCATION for EmploymentThis is one of the educational slogans often repeated, but not yet attempted seriously on a large scale in our schools. If education cannot enable one to earn one's living and thus contribute to his as well as to social welfare, that education has failed in one of its chief purposes. Education cannot be an end in itself; in a changing society education must be adapted to the needs of the society in which we live.
In education as well as in other spheres of activity tradition dies hard. For nearly a century education in Ceylon had been dominated by the urge to get white collar jobs in the government service. This has been ruinous to our country. It is obvious that white colour jobs cannot be available to all. Yet the old system continues, the old attitudes and ideas predominate; it is still the ambition of every parent that his son should get a job in the clerical service. The result is that we find

more and more educated youths without employment. Their education has failed. -
Practical education, the remedy for this is very slow in coming. It is the major responsibility of the schools, to prepare for changes in people's attitudes and ideas. Manual labour is looked upon with contempt; a sense of the dignity of labour is absent. That is why Mahatma Gandhi tried to effect a silent social revolution by drastic changes in the method of education. ''Education through a craft' was his method. Something of this kind is a crying need in our schools today. It is a better method of education; it is a means of defence against unemployment; it is a way of building up a poor country.
The Government should assist by providing vocationål and technical schools. Though the Government is aware of this problem, it is far behind other countries like, England, India and the

U. S. S. R. In these countries technical education is given pride of place because it is the key to efficiency and economic progress. In fact the economic well-being of a country depends on sufficient and efficient technical personnel. In Ceylon there is a dearth of technicians; technicians moreover, must exploit local conditions and evolve scientific techniques suited to local circumstances. The complaint is often made by educationists that science teaching in Ceylon is bookish. There must be on the part of the student a spirit of adventure in learning science and using it for some practical purposes. These are urgent needs in Ceylon today.

Ceylon cannot forever remain dependent on tea, rubber and coconut, with only the clerical service as the only major field of employment. Ceylon's economy must expand industrially and agriCulturally and thus widen employment opportunities. For this technical knowledge is necessary. A recent press-headline 'The S. S. C. farmers are a failure', shows the grave defect of our educational set-up. It calls for a reshuffle of our educational system; changes in the methods and ideas of education are vital for the changeover to the new slogan, Education for Employment'.

The Solution to the
ODAY Ceylon is definitely passing through a very Critical period. Democracy is being sabotaged, people are being deceived and above all, the leaders are not only disunited, but Some of them are going mad on the language issue. To imagine professors becoming fanatics and patriots becoming Communalists is really alarming. The fear of the extinction of one language is solved by the Suppression of another. Now that the 'Sinhalese Only Bill' has become law, the minorities are thinking of ways and means of getting rid of discrimination.
Many solutions have been put
forward by many people to this
guestion. Some advocate federalisan as the only solution while another section advocates a separate Tamil state. When examined closely both these seem to be rather miscalculated and un SOund Suggestions.
The Federalists advocate that Ceylon should be divided into twoone state for the Tamils and one for the Sinhalese. Federalism is not Only unworkable but also unimaginable. First of all a federation can Only be established if both the
set-up for Ceylon. As it is today the Sinhalese are totally against the division of the island into two units and what is more, the Federal party appears to be a Communal

party, having seats and Conducting its propaganda. Only among the Tamils. Moreover, not all the Tamils are in favour of a federation; so the establishment of a federation is un thinkable. Even if a federal set-up were achieved it would lead Eo a series of other problems. Difficulty is bound to arise Over khe Question of the demarCation of the boundaries between the two states. Further, the states have to Submit to some Control by the central government. The Centre might dictate to the states on major issues and insist. On their views being followed. Moreover, difficulty will arise regarding the status of a large number of Tamils who have their interests and wealth vested in the Sinhalese districts. They will be subjected to many disabilities.
Finally, the economic aspect of this solution is important and Cannot be passed over. A state in a federation Will have to find sources of revenue to run the government. The Northern and the Eastern parts of Ceylon have fewer resources than the Sinhalese areas, nor do they have much possibility of future development. (The leaders appear to expect all persons in the North to Cultivate manioc and be selfsufficient in food) Therefore, a separate state will not be able to function. Above all splits are bound to arise between the other minority

Groups that come under the two Tamils states, e. g. the Muslim minority. In Course of time, they might become discontented and demand a separate state for themselves too. Thus there will be a repetition of what happened earlier. It is significant that up to date no Muslim group has expressed its support for a Federal Ceylon.
The demand for a separate Tamil state is as untenable as the demand for a federation. It is Sounder only in the Sense that a Separate Tamil State might be carved out by force and long strife. But a federation is unthinkable So long as only the Tamils Want it. The eConomic, social and political problems of a separate Tamil state would be WOrse than those of the Tamil state in a Federal Ceylon.
There is also a move to challenge the validity of the "Sinhalese Only Bill before a Court of law, On the grounds that it is a violation of the safeguards for the minorities, provided by the Constitution. But parity of status for Tamil and Sinhalese COuld alsO be Challenged on the same grounds by the other people who speak neither Sinhalese nor Tamil, like, for instance, the Malays and the Burghers who speak Malay and English respectively.
The real solution to the present language and the other Communal problems lies only in a

United Ceylon with a true socialistic government ruling for the welfare of the working classes, who form the backbone of the country. Once the economic problems are solved the other problems, especially the language problem will miraculously disappear. No government will last for ever and no community will continue to be mad for ever. A time will come when the people will think in terms of human beings and not in terms of Sinhalese, Tamils or Muslims.
As things are, Sinhalese only as the state language is neither welcome nor is it justifiable. Parity of status for both Sinhalese and Tamil at this stage will not be wellcome to all the Sinhalese. So why not find a solution which Will nei. ther hurt any Community nor would impede the smooth Working of the government? It lies only in the retention of English as the state language of Ceylon. The retention of English will not only Compromise both parties but also would lead to a lot of ease and Comfort in the administration of the country. The heat generated by the language problem will Cool down and the people will in Course of time realize the value of the retention of English. All lovers of Lanka hope this realization will take place before it is too late.

T is undisputable that the DemoCratic System of Government for the first time in history gives the people a share in their Own government. For the people who had been subjected to the unduestionable authority of a despot or an oligarchy, democracy was really, an assurance of their rights. Under the democratic system of government, the interests of at least the majority of the people of a COuntry are cared for. The spirit of democracy has been gaining importance from the end of the l8th century to the present day.
In a democratic state, all persons are equal as Citizens and they have the right to develop their ways of living and enjoy a good life. The state should provide all its citizens with equal Opportunities to improve their standards of living. These rights of the individual, irrespective of caste or wealth are based on the principle of equality. The freedom of speech and publication must be granted to the people in a democratic state. The people should have the right of free association, for the purpose of discussing a problem whatever its nature may be. If these rights are infringed by any government, then it will be clear that the government wants to do everything by itself and does not like the people interfering with its administration. Therefore, it is the duty of the people to see that these rights are guaranteed by the state. These

In a democratic Country, the people should be treated equally in the eyes of law. The government should regard Commission of an offence whether by a rich man. Or a poor man as equally Criminal. Inequality before the law will introduce tyranny into SOciety. The people should have the freedom to follow any religion; but the state should be secular, giving protection to all faiths Without discrimination. If the state aligned itself Completely with One religious section in the Country, it will Wreck political harmony and conseCuently economic prosperity.
The will of the majority of the people of a nation is the essence of democracy. The means by which their Wishes are found Out is through periodic elections. Without periodic elections any government Will tend to become autocratic. This tendency towards autocracy is being checked by periodic elections. The people elect their own government. Then, who are those who are allowed to vote? All adults other than Criminals and lunatics are given the right to vote. Even in England the Women were not given their voting rights till l9l8. It is foolish to deny the tranchise to women because WOmen are as Wise as men.

qualifications. The government should hear the voice of the poor and the rich without any partiality. Therefore, poor men too, should be given voting rights.
Education Cannot decide the quality of the voter, because, many educated men behave like fools. There are many Wise men among the Workers or peasants. So, all adults other than Criminals and lunatics must be given the franchise. This system of 'universal franchise' will stabilize the government. Even in this democratic World of the 20th Century We See many people being denied human rights. South Africa is a good example. There, 45,000 'blacks' have been disfranchised recently. The government of the Union of South Africa has become the government of the minority 'whites'. The government scorns the wishes of the majority. Racial madness has gone to Such on extent in South Africa, that it is not an easy task for a Coloured man to move from place to place as he likes. This is an instance of the abuse of democracy.
Another striking feature of democracy is the freedom an individual enjoys. According to the Habeas Corpus Act One Cannot be imprisoned without trial. It is also the duty of the state to protect any individual of any community, from danger. The government of any Country will be failing in its duty, if it does not protect the people even of the minority from a person or a mob.

mony, nowadays in Countries like Ceylon. Democratically, the majority Can assert its rights. But it must not establish its rights at the expense of the rights of the minorities. If it does so, it is undemoCratic. The people who truly feel for their rights, Will realize, that in the same way the rights of the others are dear to them. Therefore, those who arouse racial but not national feeling among the people are not real lovers of democracy. Although there may be differences, there should be a general Compromise between the majority and the minority. Adaptation for the national good is necessary. With a considerable number of people, Crying for their rights and their heart burning with discontent, no government can run Smoothly. The government should act for the Welfare of the nation safeguarding the rights of all. That is the proper use of democracy.
History shows that even under democracy misrule is possible. The democratic principles of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity became important Only after the French Revolution. France became the Supporter of Liberty. They began to fight against Monarchy. Napolean became, not the Liberator of Europe but a powerful danger to it. He began to disregard the liberty and patriotism of others and this proved to be his doom. South Africa, as already pointed out, is a modern example.
Some accuse democracy as 'the Counting of heads'-takes into account quantity and not quality. In

an ideal democracy although heads are counted they will be sound ones. The people by education will do what they think is Correct. Economic problems should be solved. The wants of the people must be fulfilled and they should be provided with employment. Then Only can a nation prosper. The success of democracy depends on honesty, responsibility

But if the person is an astronomer, before him would open out the mysteries of the vast universe With its heavenly bodies travelling at tremendous Speeds.
From early times man has been wondering about the Star and the sky. Unfortunately, the people who wrote religious books like 'The Holy Bible' had stated that God had created the stars sometime about the fourth day of Creation. This belief Once retarded the progress of astronomical Science. Pioneer astronomers like Galileo were tortured by the representatives of God till they Conformed to Orthodoxy. But the science of astronomy having withstood its early suppressions grew and today many of the Secrets of the

Some Scientists thought and still think that life might exist in planets like Venus and Mars which are similar to Earth. The powerful telescopes like those in Mt. Wilson and Mt. Palomar Observatories have revealed the change of Seasons and "vegetation'" on Mars. Also straight canals or Some Such things have been observed on Mars. This led to the Surmise that life might exist in Mars. Since Venus is covered by thick clouds our telescopes are unable to penetrate them and look for evidence as to the possible existence of life on that beautiful planet. But Owing to various other reasons no One seriously thinks that life exists in Venus.

and novels like 'A Trip to the Moon' by Jules Werne, and War of the Worlds" by H. G. Wells appeared. Also 'space travel serials began to shoot out from Hollywood. Youngsters of today interest themselves in the space adventures of Flash Gordon Jim Corbett and other heroes appear. ing in the daily papers and Comics It is interesting to note that in those tales rockets take off for various planets like a car starting-a thing which scientists think could never be done. Suddenly from no Nhere the famous, and mysterious 'Flying saucers' appeared. The Press gave much publicity and then flyinç 'cigars', 'huts' and the like were being seen by pilots and lonely farmers. These were supposed ic have Come from Mars or Venus Ol Some other planet. An Australian Scientist recently gave a satisfactory explanation to the Origin of the 'Flying-saucers by Correlating then with the Aura of the North Pole.
While people have been having their fun, Scientists have been Working hard to make Space travel possible Breaking the Sound barrier was a notable achievement which advanced the possibilities of Space travel. Firs a friction-proof material had to be discovered to prevent the rocke being burnt like the meteorites. In order to push the rocket away anc out of mother earths' gravitationa arms powerful jets had been built Scientists say that passengers would receive tremendous shocks whe rockets blast off. If they survive from the shock, they would never hear the

blast because the sound waves would never overtake them.
After overcoming all technical difficulties if a rocket goes out of the gravitational field it will travel On its Own inertia. Even Solar energy may be utilised once the rocket is free in Space. If by ill-luck a passing meteorice Crashes into the rocket, nothing Would be left to show that there had been a rocket. If the rocket is safe in Space the passengers would experience something funny. They will not have a Substance known in their homes as floor. In mid air inside the "room' everything - Cups, plates, bottles, beds even they themselvesWill be moving about unless proper precautions are taken. They cannot drink anything in Cups in the usual manner for liquid will not 'flow down", and straws have got to be used. Patiently Scientists have been Struggling to launch a Space-ship. Rivalry between the scientists of two nations in Order to get the Credit for launching the first Space-ship has resulted in the rapid pogress of. Constructing rockets. Amerrican scient ists say that by the middle of next year they would send up an artificial satellite which would function as a second moon about 1,500 miles from the surface of earth. From that they say they could probe into the future prospects of Space travel. But Russian

scientists Say that they have been long trying to explore the universe and have very much advanced in making a Space-ship. Scientists too have got atomic energy for the power necessary.
Well, if such a thing as space travel Comes into being in future, mankind Could hope to benefit a lot.

NE of the most wonderful inventions of Our age is Television. The word television means 'seeing at a distance." It is Seeing by the aid of Hertzian Waves or otherwise, of what is happening or existing at a place veiled by obstacles or distance from the observer's eyes.
Let us try to understand how this Wonderful thing is done. It is, done by the help of electricity. The process is a very Complicated one and We can understand it fully only if we have a very advanced knowledge of electricity and its applications. We can get Some idea of the working of television if We realise that the process is one of transformation.
In Physics we study that energy cannot be destroyed but it can be transformed. Heat energy can be transformed into light or electrical energy, Sound energy can be transformed into electrical energy. Similarly each kind of energy can be

transformed into another. In the Case of a telephone we speak into One receiver; the Words we utter are transformed into sounds of electricity. These travel at an incredible speed to the other end where a person is holding the receiver to the ear. In this part of the instrument the Sounds of electricity are once again changed into Sounds of Speech, and thus the message is delivered. All this happens in so short a time that we can hardly believe it.
In the case of television a similar thing happens but instead of Sounds that turn into electric currents We have sights. Light is very essential for life. Without light we can't See anything. So sights are formed by light. The light strikes upon our eyes and shows as shapes and forms of things, according to the shapes and forms upon which the light happens to shine. Men of Science have invented a machine that can transform the Sights We Sce into

electric Currents. And these sight; are propagated by means of electrf Currents through the air into an part of the world. There is anothe machine to receive these current of electricity and transform them again into light, bringing before Ou eyes the forms of things hundreds o milles away. HE Prohibition Movement in Ceylon owes its origin to a motion in the State Council by Mr. A. P. de Soyza, a quarter of a Century ago. The Cry, however, has faded with the lapse of years and today, we find in Our midst only a few prohibition pioneers, pre-eminent amOng them being Mr. Dudley Senanayake and Mr. S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike. How far their efforts will succeed only history can tell.

"Drink Demon". How many murdes are Committed on account of drink How many die prematurely as a result of heart diseases caused by drink If one takes these to heart he will begin to hate drink and finally give it up totally. If a man feels that he has a heart for his family, a desire to live and to be a man, he can easily get rid of this "Drink Demon."
Introducing prohibition by legislation is almost tantamount to tyranny. Any dictatorial individual or Government cannot stop a man from stealing by amputating his hands, and the thief Would still remain a thief at heart. On the other hand there are many thieves who are reformed by mere words of advice and guidance. The act for the introduction of prohibition by law is fraught with disastrous repercussions, for an addict would resort to means like illegal distilling and tapping. Even in India, the prohibition movement has not been successful except in three provinces. It is Worthy of note that " the result is poor in spite of the patriotic zeal and leadership of men like, Gandhi, Nehru and Rajaji, who by the

very virtue of their lives rather than by force and eloquence, make the masses follow their footsteps. If this is so in India, one can imagine the sort of result we can expect in Our Country where many of Our leaders Cannot live without their daily dose.
Our prohibition leaders should realise this at least that "an ounce of practice is worth more than a tén of theory'. They should lead a simple and self-controlled life and should be in a position to make the masses follow their example. This would bring bcetter results than What Can be produced by legal force and Oratorical eloquence. Instead of their mass meetings and pulpit oration, Our leaders should inculcate in the minds of the masses, the virtue of abstention. The people can be educated to appreciate the virtue of abstention through films and lectures. This will gradually bring true results. Other. Wise as an Indian authority on prohibition has said prohibition will be a failure-total and tragic.

We Hunt for

to Keerimalai, to Collect some marine animals P' asked Mr. Rama. krishnan. He was teaching us about the sea anemone. About twenty-five of us raised our hands. That was a Friday.
'' Meet me at the Jaffna railway station. Seven. Sunday morning' he said.
On the Sunday morning, about twenty from Our class and ten from Some other classes were Waiting for Mr. Ramakrishnan, at the Jaffna rail. Way station. At seven Mr. Rama. krishnan arrived at the station. On sighting him. We booked our tickets to Kankesanturai.
The train usually comes at 7-15 but that day it came half an hour late, Even before the train stopped some of us jumped in. We Wanted window seats. Not much fun sitting caged up in a moving train.
We had Our breakfast at K. K. S Then We Walked into the sea near the light house. We didn't go far intC the sea, because the animals that we Wanted to Collect lived in shallow water.
Most of these animals attach thei bodies to stones. Therefore, we hac to search among the reefs. We turnec up almost every stone. We founc many Sea-anemones.
Sea - anemones are very beauti ful animals to look at. It was a

feast of Colour. So many and so varied. The name sea-anemone means 'sea-flower."
Later, We Waded in the Water, Walking up to Keerimalai. We looked for marine animals among the shallows, all the way down. We Collected a lot of animals. All of them were put in the bottles, we had brought with us. We filled them with Water and put the Creatures in. Some of them were rare Specimens.
By twelve we reached Keerimalai. We were sweating with Our Walk in the Sun, and a dip in the tank was very welcome. We Surrendered ourselves to the Cooling Waters and Splashed each other to Our hearts, desire.
Three of Our party had been ticked off to Cooked Our mutton, and When we got out refreshed, after Our bath, and had done justice to Our lunch we could have sworn that they were the best chefs in the World.
Then we slept in the shades. After our tea, we came back by bus. Of course we didn't forget the specimens which we have Collected with So much difficulty.
These specimens and some others in Our College were exhibited at the last the Northern Province Science Teachers' Association Exhibition and won a first prize in the Zoology section.

Money for Po
WF are young boys. We like to see pictures. We like to buy things which we like, Such as story books, pens, Sweets etc. So in Order to fulfil our joyful thoughts We must have money. How are we to get money? Our parents rarely give money for Our pocket expenses. We cannot blame them for not giving us money. Most of Our parents are not rich, and the whole family depend on them. As We are students We must think of the financial difficulties of Our parents. We must not force Our parents to give us money. But any how we must be happy. So We must get Some money for Our pocket expenses.
Here I am going to Write a simple way by which we can get a fairly good Sum of money.
By the help of Our parents we must buy some fowls. We must tell them that we are going to rear the fowls and get the profit out of it for Our pocket expenses. I hope that every parent will help us in this matter.
Allow the fowls to stay in trees during the night. The trunk of the tree must be Wrapped by a tin and must be nailed, so that animals like mongoose might not climb and catch the fowls. The fowls which we rear must not be more than ten. In the morning call all the fowls and check them. Then we can go to School. The fowls will feed on insects, grass and other things. When We COme home in the evening we must feed

them with paddy, and allow them to rest in the tree for the night. Soon the hens will lay eggs. A hen lays about twelve eggs. If we feed them. Well they will lay more eggs. We can sell the eggs and get the money. An egg costs about twenty Cents.
We can also allow the eggs to be hatched and can multiply more. We must rear the chickens carefully. We must feed them, and must Supply them with water to drink. We must keep them in cages until they grow a little big for the chickens Will be carried away by Crows. After a few months we can sell these grown-up chickens for not less than tWO rupees each.
Thereby we can get much money for Our pocket expenses. We must also spend money and buy paddy to feed them.
We must not think that it is difficult to rear fowls. I think that it is an easy method to get some money. Very soon we will become interested and will have it as a hobby. The Only thing that makes us happy is money.
So I frankly say that no one will fail to get money by rearing fowls; they will get sufficient money for their pocket expenses and can even save money and help their parents.

St. Thomas' Prep, Colpetty. I was fond of Cricket, but we couldn't enjoy it with the house-made Wickets We Cut Out of Sticks and friends of mine persuaded me to ask my father to buy me a set of real Wickets.
The whole day my mind was dreaming of this and also at the Same time planning how to persuade my father to pump out the cash.
In the evening I got the opportunity, so I started with that Subject. After my long explanation, he agreed to buy them for me. The next day was a holiday for me, and I stayed at home. At about eleven o'clock father phoned from his office to mother, Saying that the price was about sixteen rupees, and asked her whether to buy or not. Mother like any other sensible Jaffna lady didn't like to waste Rs. 16 - quite a fortune-on such silly stuff. So she asked my father not to buy them and told him that she would get the servant to cut out Sticks for the

Later, when I came to know of this, I at Once phoned up father, begging him to buy it for me. He

just Said, 'yes', but came for lunch Without anything. When I saw this I got angry and was unable to eat my lunch. At this time my sister teased me for some reason or other; So Suddenly I got hold of a lump of rice and threw it at my sister. But I missed her. Father was just Coming in, dressed in his best Suit to go Out for Some important function, and the handful of rice I had hurled at my sister exactly went and stuck plop On his suit. Father got Wild and went out and brought a cane. He forgot himself and started to cane me, but fortunately for me my uncle happened to be there and saved me from father's cane-work. He also got a bit of the Caning. I am very grateful to him for the timely assistance. The main reason why father Caned me was because he considered it a sin to play with rice.
Later in the evening, father bought me the set of Wickets. I might also mention that, that was the first and the last time that my father Caned me.
Nothing very surprising because I am his Only Son.

OLOMBO is a very beautiful city With her Wide roads and pavəments. I saw her for the last time 'On January l5. It was a Sunday. The day before Was Thai Pongal. It passed very happily for me. But not SO was January l5. It was the end of my life in Colombo. I didn't like leaving Colombo and I felt that my life was being ruined. It was a very nice day neither too warm nor too cold. Every. thing around me seemed to be asking me, 'Why are you leaving Colombo? This is a very nice City. You can't have any more joy in life. There is nothing like Colombo. SUALLY I get up from my bed before dawn. But on rainy days I get up a bit later than usual. One morning On a rainy day I got up from my bed and I felt very cold. So I covered my body with a Woollen blanket to keep myself warm. I was unable to study. So I went round the garden to find out what had happened that night. The sky was very cloudy and it was raining slightly but I did not care.
First, I went to see the vegetable garden. The tomato plants were heavy with fruits and were unable to stand against the rain. and the Wind, because they were on Supports,

Then I went to see the flower garden. The flowers were open and looked beautiful and the Smell was s"weet. They were of different colours and attracted the insects and butterflies. I could not enjoy the sight any longer because it was time to go to School.

Soon its vas six O'Clock and we decided to go back; but I told my friends to stay until seven o'clock and get a view of Keerimalai at night. So we stopped a while. It was a lovely sight and even more beautiful and pleasant at night than in the day. There was perfect stillness except for the Continuous SOund made by the Naves; the Sound of the Waves is as SC Weet as music. Seven o'clock, and we had to leave Keerimalai, SO We got into a bus and returned home.

Centenary of the FounderManager
The Jaffna Hindu College, which is now two-thirds of a century old, paid tributes to its Founder-Manager, the late Mr. S. Nagalingam (l855-1897) by celebrating his centenary on Thursday, 27th October 1955. Mr. Nagalingam had been the Manager of the College from the time it was founded in 1890 till his death in 1897.
The celebrations began with a Special Pooja at the College Shrine followed by a lunch. Mr. C. CoomaraSwamy, President of the Board of Directors of the Jaffna Hindu College and Affiliated Schools, presided at the Centenary meeting held in the College Hall in the evening. Messrs A. W. Kulasingham and C. Ponnambalam (Advocates) addressed the gathering. Mr. T. Muthusamipillai, Crown Advc cate and General Manager of the J. H. C. and Affiliated Schools, proposed the vote of thanks.
Centenary of the late Mr S.T. M. Pasupathy Chettiar
The centenary celebrations of a chief founder of the J. H. C., the late Mr. ST. M. Pasupathy Chettiar (1856-1906) were held at the College on Saturday, 14th July 1956. Mr. T. Muthusamipillai, the General Manager of the J. H. C. and Affiliated Schools, presided. Sir Kanthiah Waithianathan,

Mr. K. Kanagaratnam and Senator S. R. Kanaganayagam spoke at this function. Sir Kanthiah unveiled a portrait of the late Pasupathy Chettiar. Copies of a beautifully printed Souvenir to commemorate this occaSion were distributed. Mr. A. Arulampalam, J. P., Secretary of the Board of Directors of the J. H. C. and Affiliated Schools, proposed the vote of thanks.
Changes in the J. H. C. Staff
Mr. C. Ponnambalam, B. Sc. (Ceylon), who left us in December l955 to join the Staff of St. Patrick's College, Jaffna, re-joined the Staff on the list of July 1956 and left us at the end of the same month to join the Government Analyst's Department.
Mr. N. Shanmuganathan, B. Sc. Hons. (Ceylon), served as a member of the Staff from January to July 1956 before joining the Forest Department.
Mr. S. Muthulingam, B. Sc. (Ceylon), left at the end of January 1956 to assume duties as an Assistant Lecturer in Education at the University of Ceylon.
Mr. P. Thambu (London InterScience and First Class English Trained) retired in February 1956 after 37 years of service. Mr. S. Jayaveerasingam, B. A. Hons. (Lond.), also retired in February after 18 years of Service.
Mr. C. Palanithurai (Pandit and G. T. C., Maharagama) who joined the

Staff in January, left us in April to join the Staff of Urumpiray Hindu College. Mr. E. Mahadeva (First Class English Trained) of the Staff of Urumpirai. Hindu College filled his place in May. Mr. A. Thirunavukarasu, B. A. (Lond.), left us at the end of June to read for the PostGraduate Diploma in Education at the University of Ceylon. Mr. G. M. Mr. P. Thambu received his education at Jaffna Central College and St. Joseph's College, Colombo, where he passed the London Matriculation Examination in the First Division in June 1916. After Completing the Course of training at Government Training College, Colombo, during l917-18, he joined the Staff of Jaffna Hindu College in 1919. In 1922 he was transferred to Hindu English School, Urumpiray (now Urumpiray Hindu College), where he served as Headmaster until the latter part of 1927, when

he reverted to Jaffna Hindu College as an assistant teacher. He passed the London Inter Science Examina
tion in 1929.
Mr. Thambu was Secretary of the Jaffna Hindu College Co-opelative Credit Society from the time it was founded in 1926 until it was wound up in 1948. He was Housemaster of Selvadurai House from 1938 to 1944. He has been the Treasurer of the Northern Province Teachers' Provident Society, Ltd., since 1940. , '
After Completing about 37 years of service as a teacher, Mr. Thambu retired in February last.
We wish him a happy retired life. . . .
Mr. S. Jayaveerasingham
Mr. S. Jayaveerasingham is the eldest son of Mr. P. Sabaratnasinghe who was Vice - Principal of Jaffna Hindu College for several years. Mr. Jayaveerasingham received his - education at Jaffna Hindu College and at University College, Colombo. After passing the B. A. In 1939 he was transferred to Jaffna Hindu College where he served until he retired for reasons of health in February 1956.

He took an active part in the religious activities of the College. During the early forties he produced a few Tamil plays when he was President of the Junior and Pre-Senior Lyceums. His name is associated with the founding of the Historical and Civic Association in l942. He had been its Senior President from 1944 to 1954. He was also responsible for the revival of the J. H. C. Co-operative Credit and Thrift Society in 1952.
He is the author of two text books namely 'History Lessons for Std. IV' and ''History Lessons for Std. V// in Tamil.
We wish him a happy retired life.

Twenty-One Students Were su Ccessful in obtaining admission to the University of Ceylon. Of these nine students were admitted direct (i. e. Without viva voce examination) to the Faculties of Arts and Science. One student annexed an Entrance Exhibition (Faculty of Science) on the results of the Ceylon University Entrance Scholarship Examination held in May 1956. The full list is published elsewhere.
Inter-Collegiate Football Tournaments 1955
Our First Eleven retained the Championship, while Our Second Eleven became runners-up again in the J. S. S. A. Soccer Tournaments of l955. Our Second Eleven, however, finished the season without losing even a single match. Unfortunately, they drew both their matches in the final round, and thus failed to annex the Championship.

Inter-House Athletic Meet 1956
At the Annual Inter-House Athle. tic Meet which was concluded on the 30th of June, under the distinguishec patronage of Mr. Sri Khanta, O. B. E. Government Agent of the Jaffne District, Pasupathy House won the Championship for the fifth year ir succession. Sabapathy House were runners-up, while Nagalingam House came third. Four ground records were bettered at this meet.
Inter-Collegiate Athletic Meet 1956
For the first time during the las three decades Our Athletic Team won the Championship at the Jaffna Inter. Collegiate Athletic Meet which was held on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of August.
Seventeen Colleges participated, and our team scored 62 points Mahajana College were runners-up with 5 l points, While Jaffna Centra College (who were champions from 1947 to 1955) came third with 4C points.

Soccer 1955
E won the First Eleven Soccer Championship in J. S. S. A. Tournament for the third year in succession. This was the ninth occasion on which this much coveted title came to us. As usual, we did not lose even a single match. The team deserves all the praise that Could be showered On it. N. BalaSubramaniam, the best full-back any school team, has had in recent years captained the team. T. SivaSubramaniam left school in the early part of the season and was succeeded as vice-captain by V. Gunaratnam. K. Mahendrarajah, Captain of the team in the previous year, was there to give us goals to win many a match. The other members of the team were T. Sri Visagarajah (goal), T. Satkunanathan (back), V. Ganeshalingam (half), S. AnandaSothy (half), S. Rajadevan (right Wing), W. Rajaratnam (right-in), S Muthucumaraswamy (left-in) and S. CRICKET. 1956 First Eleven
We had a fairly successful season. We did well in batting but we lacked variety in bowling. The fielding was the enigma. It sometimes bordered On the excellent and Sometimes on the unspeakable. It is mainly the lack of a sufficiently big ground that prevents improvement in this department. The batting was fairly consistent with R. Sahadevan, V. Rajaratnam, T. Mylvaganam and N. Balasubramaniam bearing the brunt of the attack. V. Rajaratnam had another big score this year, making 162 against Parameshvara College. Sahadevan and Balasubramaniam got us Out of many a tight Corner. Mention must be made of the magnificient opening century partnership between Mylvaganam and Sahadevan against Jaffna College. It was a chanceless, efficient display by both batsmen. Veteran Amarasingham was always the same calm self, making useful scores all along the line. The Royal boy Thavaneetharajah was a useful addition to the batting side and it was a pity that in Our most important match againt Jaffna Central College, hè was on the injured list. Still his plucky display at the match will be remembered.
There was throughout the season a dearth of bowlers. V. Balasubramaniam, our main bowler, often had to bowl beyond the point of endurance while Sivapathasundaram was always a trier.
All in all, we can feel satisfied that our boys acquitted themselves relatively well. We hope to have a more balanced team next year.

THE TEAM
V. Rajaratnam (Captain) : A player of repute in Jaffna. Played very well last year against St. Antony's College, Kandy. Against the Australian School-boys he top scored in both the innings for the Jaffna Schoolboys. Makes up by guts what he lacks in technique. A brilliant field anywhere but, as Our luck would have it, he had the mortification of dropping a few catches this year. As a bowler his chief merit lies in his reputation, with the help of which he manages to take a few wickets. From where he gets the energy for his pranks on and off the field is Still a mystery.
N. Balasubramaniam (Vice-Captain): A wiry athlete, he has grace in everything he does. A batsman who goes for the bowling concentrating mainly on drives. He is, however, a master of the Square cut. A graceful figure to watch on the field, batting or fielding.
W. Gunaratnam: A former Captain. Played against the Australian School-boys Eleven and did well With the bat. A beautiful stroke player but this year, was unfortunately hampered by bad eye sight. A brilliant close-in field.
W. Balasubramaniam: A slow leg-spinner who can impart a lot of life to the ball. Apt to err in length but makes up with his occasionally unplayable deliveries. A solid batsman, who belying his looks does not believe in gambling strokes.

T. Mylvaganam: Played for the Jaffna Schools against Australian School-boys Eleven. An attacking opening batsman, With Strokes all round the wicket. The Only fault is his lack of patience. A fine field.
V. Sivapathasundaram: The opening bowler with a graceful action. Can Swing his new ball both ways. Always a trier. He has yet to learn the art of making a good length ball rise.
C. Amarasingam: The veteran of the side. His technique in batting is so good that often one wonders how he Could get out until he does, often by methods not stated in the laws. Appears slow, but because of his perfection in push strokes SCOres at a fairly even rate. Dons the keeper's gloves, not With relish but tries to do as good a job as he is capable of.
R. Sahadevan: A beautiful allrounder, with probably the best technique in batting and bowling in Jaffna. Had a very successful first season. Could have done better had he a little more guts. Unfortunately he had to leave for India for higher studies.
N. Thavaneetharajah: An old Royalist. He joined us rather late in the reason. A mature batsman whose strokes show his experience. A magnificient field. Can take a hand at bowling off-spinners. His off-side strokes and running between Wickets Ought to be learnt and imitated.
W. Ganeshalingam: The Only
left hand batsman of the side.

Believes in going for the bowling. He ought to improve because he las a big heart.
N. Sivasubramaniam: The skipper of the Champion Second Eleven. A brilliant batsman and a bowler who had a very successful season. He has bright future.

S. Sathanandan: A left hand slo N bowler. Belied to an extent the earlier promise he showed but being young he should improve.

Second Eleven
This year the J. S. S. A. Organised a Cricket Tournament, for boys under Seventeen years of age. We are proud to record that our team won the Championship. Apart from the mere winning, we set up a unique record in that We Won all our matches by innings. We had a sprightly set of youngsters, whose technique was good. In the skipper, N. Sivasubramaniam, V. Ganeshalingam, S. Sathanandan, R. Jegendran, S. Sivakumaran and a few others, we had players who were not afraid to punish a ball hard. We piled up big totals against Our opponents and our bowling had variety. W. Ganeshalingam was steady medium pace who attacked the wickets all the time The skipper was an intelligent off-spinner. We had a right arm leg-spinner in Jegendran and an Orthodox left arm bowler in Sathanandan. So it was not surprising We won the Championship.

The Inter-House, Athletic Meet was held under the distinguished paironage of one of our distinguished old boys, Mr. M. Sri Khanta, Government Agent, Jaffna District. The prizes were given away by Mrs. Sri Khanta. I thank them for the honour they did us. The meet, as usual, was Conducted very efficiently. The standard of the meet was higher than that of previous years. In the Senior Division no less than four ground records were bettered. T. Sri Visagarajah set up two new marks in the High Jumph and Pole Vault by clearing 5 ft. 7 ins. and 10 ft. 64 ins. respectively. He also established a new record in the Javelin Throw event with a distance of lS9 ft. lin. S. Ganeshasundaram bettered the Discus record with a throw of lOl. ft. lins. Pasupathy House deserves to be congratulated On Winning the championship for the fifth year in succession.

We were deprived of the porivilege of playing the part of the host to the other sister institutions which take part in this meet. This meet was not held as some of the participating Schools were not in a position to take part. We hope that this meet will not be given up for good but will be resumed next year.
Inter Collegiate Athletic Meet
We were champions this year. The only Crown that had been eluding us in the past Came Our way this year. It was really an achievement worthy of meritorious recognition. Jaffna Central had almost made monopoly of this title by winning it for the past nine years. They were robbed of victory in the tenth year by Jaffna Hindu. It is our fervent hope that we continue to have it for some more years and then be sporting enough

to pass it on to others too, if they do deserve it.
Every one of our boys rose to the occasion by giving his best, unlike previous years when our athletes dominated only in the Senior Division. This year saw us scoring in all the three divisions and this was the main reason for
(DUI SUCCESSS.
Our Athletic Captain, T. Sri Visagarajah did well at this meet. He gained the first place in the High Jump event by clearing 5ft. 8 ins. In the Pole Wault he was placed second, clearing a height of ll. ft. In the Ceylon Public Schools Sports Meet of l955, Visagarajah came third in Pole Vault. He is a natural athlete and has the makings of one destined for major honours in this field. It is our hope that he maintains this form to score further successes for himself and to the school. S. Ganeshasundaram Scored a double by Winning the Putting the Weight title with a distance of 37 ft. 4 ins. and the Javelin with a distance of 153 ft. 4 ins. P. Kanaganayagam, W. Ragunathan, S. Thirunavukarasu, N. Sivasubramaniam and M. Mohanadas gave us valuable points in the Senior Division.
In the Intermediate Division, the outstanding sprinter was N. Seevaratnam of our College. He came first in the 220 yards and second in the 100 yards. A late start in the 100 yards robbed him of the first place. In him we have a real sprinter of class. A Arasakumar came second in Pole

Vault and third in 80 yards Hurdles. He should do still better next year if he takes to athletics a bit more Seriously.
In the Junior Division, T. Mahalingam came first in the High Jump by Clearing 4 ft 7 ins., an aChievement astounding enough in a boy of under thirteen. He was unfortunate to miss the record of 4 ft. 73 ins, set up by N. Ethirveerasingham (Jaffna Central) in 1947 and equalled by V. Thanabalasingham (Parameshvara) in l953. Young Mahalingam has a bright future in athletics.
Our Relay teams acquitted themselves Creditably. In the Senior Division, We were third in both the 4 kill0 yds, and 4 x 440 yds. relays. Our Intermediate relay team SCOred a grand Victory by gaining the first place. N. Seevaratnam Will be remem. bered for the last lap he ran. When the baton came to him our team was almost fourth. At the tape he was first with a Comfortable lead of Over a yard from his closest Contender.
I do not think it will be out of place if I record that an old boy, Mr. S. Sathiamoorthy (who represented our college in athletics during his student days) won the Ceylon National Title for the 800 metres this year by clocking an excellent time of Il minute 59.9 seconds-just 0.9 secs. Outside the Ceylon Record. Our Congratulations to him. -

Incidentally, I would like to record that Mr. W. Ramakrishnan, Who has been of help to me in my Work was elected Captain of the Jaffna Hockey. Team which participated in the National Hockey Tournament in August 1956. V. Rajaratnam, a student of Our College, also represented Jaffna. Both of them were outstanding in the few matches they played at Colombo. It is also my duty to thank Mr. P. S. Cumaras Namy who from the time he entered School as a teacher has spent almost all his evenings in the playing field helping me in almost everything. Lastly, my thanks are due to the Principal and the Sports Committee for their encouragement at all times.

It is with great pride and pleasure that I Submit this report. Although we were beaten to third place at the Inter-House Athletic Meet, we need not feel disappointed because we had been runners-up during the past three years.
Our House Captain, T. Sri Visagarajah was the best athlete of the meet. He improved his own dround records in the High Jump, and Pole Vault by clearing 5 ft. 7 ins. and 10 ft. 63 ins. respectively. He also bettered his elder brother's record in the Javelin event with an achievement of 139 ft. l inch. He also annexed the Senior Individual Championship while T. Mahalingam of Our House won the Junior Individual Championship.
Our Captain, T. Sri Visagarajah led our College Athletic Team to Championship for the first time during the last three decades. He obtained the first place in High Jump and the second place in Pole Vault by clearing 5 ft. 8 ins. and ll ft. respectively.

T. Mahalingam, a promising young athlete, annexed the first place in the Junior High Jump with a height of 4 ft. 7 in S. (only 3 in. less than the J. S. S. A. meet record).
In October 1955, T. Sri Visagarajah obtained the third place in Pole Wault at the Ceylon Public Schools Athletic Meet and won the College Colours for Athletics. We hope he will do better in October next in all his events. We wish him all luck.
Last year, N. Balasubramaniam of our House led the College First Eleven Soccer Team to Championship, while T. Sri Visagarajah at the nets was not easy to beat.
I thank the staff members, the office-bearers and other members of the House for all their invaluable help and Co-operation.

The period under review is another link to the chain of untarnished victories of our House. It is with great pride that I submit the report of our House-Athletic Champions for five years in SuCCession. This year we made a clean sweep of the board by winning three challenge trophies namely Athletic Championship, Relay Championship and the Decoration shield. This is indeed a unique achievement. In the Sphere of athletiCS, special mention must be made of S. Ganeshasundaram, S. ThirunavukaraSu, N. S i v a S u bo r a m a n i a m , P. Kanaganayagam and N. Jeevaratnam, the star athletes of Our House, who came off with flying Colours at the J. S. S. A. Meet.
Our House has done Well in other spheres too. Our former captain, W. Gunaratnam who played for the Jaffna Schoolboys' Eleven against the Australian Schoolboys' Cricket Eleven was also a star SOCCer player of Our College. He had gained admission to the University of Ceylon. Congratulations Gunami Another Outstanding Soccer player K. Mahendrarajah left us too.

The College Second Eleven Soccer Team who were undefeated runners-up last year, was led by R. Mahendran, Our Athletic Captain. Our College Cricket team was strengthened by the addition of the Royalist Cricketer and rugger player who is our Secretary. The College Second Eleven Cricket Team which annexed the championship this year was ably led by N. Sivasubramaniam of Our House. Indeed, I would have failed in my duty if I did not thank T. Selvarajah who was mainly responsible for Our Houseshed decoration. . . . . . . . . . ..
In conclusion, I wish to thank all the House Masters and the members for their valuable help. A request to 'Greens'—we expect every member of Our House to continue. to keep in view its traditions, and work hard to achieve great things.

The year under review has been very Successful and I have great pleasure in Submitting Our House Report for the year. Each and every member of Our House showed keen enthusiasm. On the final day of the Sports Meet. I express my sincere thanks to them.
We entered the sports field this year with the determination that we should carry away the Championship Cup at least this year for the first time in Our Sports history. But Our athletes slackened, our determination faded and We were forced down to the fourth place. This was mainly due to our relay teams which disappointed us by not SCOring even a Singlepoint.
Any Way We are very proud of the achievements of A. Arasakumar and W. Thevarajah. The former won the Intermediate Individual Cham - pionship with ease. He won all the four events in which he took parë without any Serious Opposition. Our congratulations to him. On Winning the 2nd and 3rd places in the Pole Wault and Hurdles respectively at the J. S. There has developed among the students of Our Hostel a keen enthusiasm for farming, probably as a result of the recent political trends in Our Country, where even political leaders have started to advise the youth to take to farming or industry, instead of seeking white-Collar jobs.
I am proud to record that Our Hostel Farm, the success of which is the result of whole-hearted CoOperation of the members of the Garden Committee, has won the admiration of several visitors to the Hostel.

வர்கள் வாழும் நாடுகளில் ஒவ்வோர் இனத்தவர்க்கும் தத்தம் மொழியில்-இனத் தில்-பற்று-உணர்ச்சி- இருப்பது இயல்பு. இது அவசியமும்கூட. ஆணுல் இவ்வுணர்ச்சி மொழி வெறியாகவோ இன வேறியாகவோ இருத்தல் கூடாது. எனவே, கம்ாாட்டில் நம் தமிழ்மோழி ஒதுக்கப்பட்டது எமக்கு மன வருத்தத்தைக் கொ டு க் கி ன் ற போதிலும் தமிழராகிய நாம் மொழிவெறி கொள்ளாது மொழி யுணர்ச்சி கொண்டு எமக்குளிருக்கும் ஊழல்களை நீக்கி ஒற்று மைப்பட்டு உழைத்தால் வேற்றி கிட்டும் என்று மாணவ உலகம் கருதுகின்றது
உலக அரசியல் அரங்கில் இன்று
சூயஸ் கால்வாய்ப் பிரச்சனை முக்கிய இடத்தை வகிக்கின்றது. இப்பிரச்சனை மூன்றுவது யுத்தத்தைக் கிளப்பி, ஒ ஆங்கில அறிஞர் கண்ட கனவை நினை வாக்குமோ வென்றுகூடப் பலர் பயப்ப( கின்றனர். ஆனுல் இன்றைய சூழ்நிலையை நாம் உற்று நோக்கினுல் யுத்தத்ை எந்த வல்லரசும் தொடக்கி வைக்க துணியாதென்பது புலனுகும்.

ஒன்றே குலம், ஒருவனே தேவன் என்ற சிறந்தமொழி பண்டைக்காலம் தொட்டுச் சொல்லளவில் மாத்திரம் இருந்து வந்ததே தவிச் செயல்முறையில் அதன கருத்து வெளிப்படவில்லை. ஆனுல் இன்று அது செயல்வழித் தோன்றி ஆண்டவன் சந்நிதியில் அவன் பிள்ளைக ளெல்லாம் சமத்துவமாகத் தந்தையை வழிபட வழி வகுக்கப்பட்டதையும் அவ்வழி வகுத்த பெரியோர்களேயும் மனமார மாணவ உலகம் வாழத்துகின்றது.

களிலும் வளர்ச்சி யடைந்து வருகின்றது. கடந்த ஆங்கில எஸ். எஸ். எபி. பரீட் சையில் அதிகப்படியான மாணவர்கள் சித்தி யடைந்திருக்கிறர்கள். அத்துடன் எங்கள் கல்லூரியிலிருந்து கூடிய தொகை யான மாணவர்கள் இம்முறை பல்கலைக் கழகத்துக்குள் பிரவேசித்துள்ளனர்.

வகிக்கின்றது, கிறிக்கற் (Cricket) ஆட்டத் திலும் முன்னேறி வருகின்ருேம், யாழ்ப் பாணப் பாடசாலை விளையாட்டுச் சங்கத் தாரால் (J. S. S. A.) நடாத்தப்படும் விளை யாட்டுப் போட்டியில் (Athletics) இவ் வருடம் எங்கள் பாடசாலை முதலிடத்தைப் பெற்றது இங்கு குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது,
அத்துடன் இந்துவாலிபர் கழகம், (Y. M. H. A.) சரித்திரக் குடியியற் கழகம் விஞ்ஞானக்கழகம் போன்ற சங்கங்கள் நிறுவப்பட்டு அவைகளின்மூலம் மாண வர்களை ஊக்குவிக்கும் எங்கள் கல்லூரிக்கு நாம் நன்றி யுள்ளவர்களாவோம்.
எங்கள் கல்லூரியில் ஆசிரியர்க ளாகக் கடமையாற்றிய திரு. N. சண்முக brig GöT B, Sc. (Hons), 5(5. C. (OUTGT னம்பலம் B, Sc. ஆகியவர்கள் எம்மை விட்டுப் பிரிந்து சென்றது எமக்குக் கவலையைக் கொடுகின்றது. எனினும் அவர்கள் அரசாங்கத்தில் உயர்ந்த பதவி
களே வகிக்கிறதைக் காணும்போது ஏற்
படும் மகிழ்ச்சி ஒருவாறு அத்தளர்ச்சியைத் தவிர்க்கின்றது. இவ்விருவரும் இக்கல் லூரியின் பழைய மாணவர்கள் என்பது இங்கு குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.
எங்கள் கல்லூரியில் கடமை யாற்றிய திரு. த. சேனுதிராசா (B. Sc.) அவர்கள் சென்ற வருடம் இங்கிலாந்திற்கு உயர்தரக் கல்வி பெறச் சென்று இவ்வருடம் தம் படிப்பை முடித்துக்கொண்டு எங்கள் கல்லூரியிலேயே திரும்பவும் கடமையைக்

கைக்கோண்டது எமக்கு மகிழ்ச்சியைக் கோடுக்கின்றது. மேலும் அன்னுரவர்கள் பிறநாட்டு நல்லறிஞரின் கருத்துரைகளை எமக்கும் அள்ளி வீசி ஒளி பெருக்குவா ரென எதிர்பார்க்கிருேம்.

தம்முடைய முயற்சியினுல் முன் னிருந்த விடுதிச் சாலையுடன் மாணவர் களுக்கு வசதி யளிப்பதற்காக இன்னு மொரு பெரிய விடுதிச்சாலையையும், ஒரு சிறந்த சாப்பாட்டறையையும் கட்டுவித்த விடுதிச்சாலை அதிபரான திரு. K. S. சுப்பிர மணியம் அவர்களுக்கு நாம் என்றும் கடமைப்பட்டவர்களாவோம்,
முடிவுரை:
தமிழைப் பேசும் பொழுதும் அரைச் சொல் ஆங்கிலமாவது அதற்குள் புகுத்தா விட்டால் தம்மைப் - படித்தவர் - நாகரிக முள்ளவரென்று பிறர் கருதா ரெனக் கற்றவர்கூடக் கருதுங் காலத்திலே; அது மாத்திரமன்றி அன்னை மொழியாகிய நம் தமிழ்மொழி ஒதுக்கப்பட்ட நேரத்திலே * இந்து இளைஞனின் ” தோற்றம் வரவேற்கத் தக்கது. இளம் எழுத்தாளரை ஊக்குவித்து நாட்டுக்கு வருங்காலத்தில் சிறந்த எழுத் தாளர்களையும் பேச்சாளர்களையும் அளிப் பதே இந்து இளைஞனின் நோக்கமாகும். இதற்கு எம்மாசிரியர்களும் மாணவர்களை இன்னும் கூடுதலாக ஊக்குவித்து உதவி யளிப்பார்களென எதிர் பார்க்கிருேம், அதே நேரத்தில் மாணவர்களும் தம்மை ஆயத்தப் படுத்தி ஆசிரியர்கள் அளிக்கும் அரிய 5ந்தர்ப்பத்தைப் பயன்படுத்துவார்க ளென நம்புகிறேன். அடுத்த வருட இதழ் இவ் விதழிலும் பார்க்கச் சிறப்படைய ஆசிரியர் களும் மாணவர்களும் உதவி யளிப்பார்க ளென எதிர்பார்க்கிறேன். மேலும் இவ் விதழைத் தம் கருத்தோவியங்களால் சிறப் பித்த இச்சிருர்களின் வருங்காலம் வளம் பேறுமென எதிர்பார்க்கின்றேன்,

அரசராலு மறிஞராலும் மக் ளாலும் போற்றப்பட்ட செல்வ நி3 யைப் பதவியைத் துச்சமாகக் கருதி கைவிட்ட வள்ளலின் பக்திப் பாட களே திருவாசகம். மாணிக்கவாசக வாழ்க்கையிலே பட்ட விடர் காரண மாகத் துறவுபூணவில்லை. செல்வத் ணுச்சியி லிருந்தபொழுது துறவை கைக்கொண்ட செல்வர் அவர். அ6 வளவு பக்தி மிகுதியும் அருட்பேறு முடையவர். சம்பந்தர் சமணருடன் வாது செய்ததுபோன்று பொன்ன பலம் நீடூழி வாழ்க வென்பதனைட பொறுக்க முடியாத குறுகிய மனட பான்மையுடைய புத்தர்களுடன் வாது செய்து அவர்கட்கு நன்னெறியை யு. தேசித்த வள்ளல் மாணிக்கவாசகர் திருவாசகப் பாக்களை யோதும்பே தெவனுள்ளத்திலுங் கனிவு, இன்பம் நெகிழ்வு தோன்ருரதிருக்க முடியாது.

*தாயாய் முலையைத் தருவோனே
தாரா தொழிந்தாற் சவலையாய்
நாயேன் கழிந்து போவேனுே
நம்பி யினித்தான் நல்குதியே
தாயே யென்றுன் தாளடைந்தேன்
தயாநீ யென்பா லில்லையே
நாயே னடிமை யுடனுக
ஆண்டாய் நான்தான் வேண்டாவோ”.
'அருட்பசி கொண்டுன்னிடம் வந்தேன் சவலைக்குத் தாய்ப்பாலன்றி வேறுண் வில்லாதது போன்றெனக்கு நினதரு ளன்றி வேறு பற்றுக்கோடு யாது?

லுன்னைப் பெறலாமே தேனே யமுதே கரும்பின் றெளிவே தித்திக்கும் மானே யருளா யடியே
னுனைவந் துறுமாறே.
ஒரு குழந்தை யென்ன தவறு செய்தினுந் தாய் அக்குழந்தை யழுவ தனைப் பொறுக்கமாட்டாள். அவ்வா றெனிற் 'பானினங் தூட்டுந் தாயினுஞ் சாலப் பரியுமிறைவன் உருகி யழுதிடி கனடியானுக் கருளா தொழிவானே. இப்பாட லிறைவனைக் கருணே வடி வாகக் காண்பிப்பதோ டமையாது எமது சமயக் கருத்தினை விளக்கு கின்றது. எந்தப் பொய்யனு முண்மை யில் மனமுருகித் தன் பிழையை யெண் னிக் கழிவிரக்க மெய்திடி னவனுக்

கிறைவன் அருட்பேறளித்தருளுவான். இவ்வாறு செய்த பிழைக்குப் பழிவாங் கும் நோக்கமில்லாது அறிவூட்டிச் செந்நெறிகாட்டும் வண்மையையுடைய விறைவனைக் கருணை வடிவாகக் கண்டு மாணிக்கவாசகர் போகம் வேண்ட வில்லை; புரந்த ராதி யின்பமும் வேண்ட வில்லை; உற்றுரை வேண்டவில்லை; ஊரும் பேரும் வேண்டவில்லை; கற் ருரரை வேண்டவில்லை. 'குற்றுலத் தமர்ந்துறையுங் கூத்தனை நோக்கி யவர் வேண்டும் வரம் இதே:
உன் குரைகழற்கே கற்றுவின் மனம்போலக்
கசிந்துருக வேண்டுவனே."
திருவாசகப் பாக்கள் மாணிக்க வாசகப் பெருமானது சிவானுபவத் தைப் புலப்படுத்துவனவேயாம். சிவ னுடன் சேருமின்பத்தை நுகர்ந் தவ் வின்ப நுகர்விலுைம், பிரிய நேர்ந்த போது துன்பவுணர்வினலும், சிவத் தின் அருட்டிறனை நினைந்துருகும் உணர்விலுைம், அருட்பேறு பெற்ற தீதற்ற செம்மாப் புணர்ச்சியாலும் பாடப்பட்டவை யிப்பாடல்கள். இத் தகை யுள்ள முருக்கு முணர்ச்சிப் பெருக்கினை வேறெங்குங் காண்ட லரிது. உதாரணமாக மேல்வரும் பாடலே நோக்குவாம்.
* நெக்கு நெக்குள் ளுருகி யுருகி
நின்று மிருந்துங் சிடந்து மெழுந்தும் நக்கு மழுதுந் தொழுதும் வாழ்த்தி
நானு விதத்தாற் கூத்தும் நவிற்றிச் செக்கர் போலுந் திருமேனி

பண்டைக் காலத் தொடக்கம் பாரத நாடு பற்பல விதங்களிற் சிறப் புப் பொருந்தி யிருக்கின்றது. இக் நாட்டுச் சரித்திரத்தில் பல சுதந்திரச் சிற்பிகளின் பெயர்கள் பொ ன் னெழுத்துக்களினுற் பொறிக்கப்பட் டிருக்கின்றன. கொன்றுதொட்டுப் பல பெரியார்கள் ஒருவர்பின் ஒருவ ராய் அவதரித்து எம் பாரதநாட்டின் வளர்ச்சிக்கும் புகழுக்கும் தம் வாழ் நாட்களை அர்ப்பணித்து மிகுந்த தொண்டாற்றி வந்திருக்கின்றனர். இப்படிப்பட்ட பெரியார்களை ஈன்று புகழ்பெற்ற பாரதமாதா அன்னியர் ஆதிக்கத்தின்கீழ் அல்லலுற்று, கை களில் விலங்கிடப்பெற்று, வாடி வதங் குவதைக் கண்டு எத்தனையோ பெரி யார்களும் மக்களுங் கொதித்தெழுந் தனர். இப்படியான காலத்திலே எல்லோரையும் ஒற்றுமைப்படுத்தி விடுதலைக்குப் போராடப் பண்ணு தற்கு வழிகாட்டுதற்காகப் பாரத வீரர் உலோகமான்ய பால கங்காதர திலகர் இற்றைக்கு நூறு வருடங்களின் முன் இரத்தினகிரி என்னுமிடத்தில் பிறந் தாா.

இப்படி இவர் தேசத்தொண்டு சய்து வருங் காலத்திலே இவர்மீது ஆளும் வர்க்கத்தினர் கவனமாக விருந்து இவரைச் சிறைக் கைதி ாக்கியும், நாடு கடத்தியும், பல டைஞ்சல்களுக் குள்ளாக்கித் தங்க நடைய பிரித்தாளும் முறையைக் ாட்டினர். ஆனல் அவர்கட்குத் தால்வியே கிட்டிற்று. திலகர் எல் Tவற்றையும் புன் சி ரி ப் புடனும் மைதியாகவும் ஏற்றர்.

நோக்கு மிடத்து உறுதியா எதுவும் சொல்ல முடியாதிருக்கிறது எங்குப் பார்த்தாலும் சர்வ தே நெருக்கடி மூன்றுவது உலக யுத்த தோன்றுமா என்றளண்ணம் இன்னு மக்களிடையே இருந்து வருகின்றது இந்தப்பீதி சில காலத்திற்கு முன் மிகவும் கூடுதலாக இருந்தது. ஆனல் இப்பொழுது அந்தப் பீதி அதிக குறைந்துவிட்டது என்றே கூறலாம்

* உழுதுண்டு வா
முன்னெரு காலத்தில் தமிழ் நாட்டில்
ஒரு திருமணம் நடைபெற்றது. அந்நாட்டு இளவரசனே மணமகன். அத்திருமணத்திற்குப் பல நாடுகளி லிருந்தும் அரசர்களும், பிரபுக்களும் வந்திருந்தனர். அவ் விட த் தி ற் கு ஒளவைப்பிராட்டியும் வந்திருந்தார். அவ்விளங் தம்பதிகளை வாழ்த்தும் நேரம் வந்தது. பல பெரியோர்கள் அவர்களுக்கு மங்கல வாழ்த்துக் கூறி  ைர் க ள். ஒவ்வொருவரும், * இன்றுபோல் என்றும் வாழுவீர்”, “பூவும் மணமும்போல் இணைபிரியாது வாழுவீர் ', ' விரைவில் ஒரு மாணிக் கத்தைப் பெறுக '. * செங்கோல் கோணுது அரசாள்க' என்று பல விதமாக வாழ்த்தினர்கள். ஒளவைப் பிராட்டியின் முறை வந்தபோது அவர், ' வரப்பு உயர்க' என்று சிறப் பாக வாழ்த்தினர். சபையோர் அதன் கருத்தையுணராது ஒருவரையொருவர் வெறித்து நோக்கினர். அவர்களது நிலையைக் கண்ணுற்ற பிராட்டி அ த னை த் தெளிவுறுத்துங்கால், * நிலத்தின் வரப்பு உயர, நீர் உயரும்; நீர் உயர, நெல் உயரும்; நெல் உயரக் குடி உயரும்; குடி உயரக் கோன் உயர்வான்' என்ருரர். இத்தகைய சீரும் சிறப்பு முடையது உழவுத் தொழில்.
உலகிலுள்ள தொழில்கள் எல்லா வற்றுள்ளும் சிறப்புடையது உழவுத் தொழில். இதனைக் கூறப்போந்த தமிழ்மறை யென்று போற்றப்படும்

*தொழுதூண் சுவையின் உழதூண் இனிது’ என்கிருரர். சுருங்கக் கூறின் உழவ ருக்கு மற்றவர்கள் அடிமை. நாட்டை யாளும் மன்னர்களைக்கூட அடிமைப் படுத்துந் திறன் அவர்களுக்கு உண்டு. இதனைக் கூறுங் குறளில்,
'டலகுடை நீழலும் தங்குடைக் கீழ்க்காண்பர்
9}a\'3560) L Šp GvaŭΔ. என்று இருக்கிறது. இத்தகைய சிறப் புடைய உழவுத் தொழிலே இக்காலத் தில் சிலர் ஏளனஞ் செய்கின்றனர். அரசாங்க ஊழியமே சிறந்தது ஏன்று மக்கள் பொதுவாக அபிப்பிராயம் கொண்டுள்ளனர். இது எத்தகைய தவருரன கொள்கை யென்று மேற் கூறிய குறளினின்றும் உணரலாம். இத்தகைய உழவுத் தொழிலை நாம் தெய்வமெனப் போற்ற வேண்டு மென்று செஞ்சொற் கவிஞராகிய சுப்பிரமணிய பாரதியார், * உழவுக்கும் தேர்ழிலுக்கும்

பண்டைக் காலத்தில் தமிழ்நாடு
சிறப்புற்று இருந்தமைக்கு வேளாண் மையின் பெருக்கமும் ஒரு முக்கிய காரணமாகும். * மேழிச் செல்வங் கோழை படாது? என்பது தமிழ்நாட்டவர்களது கொள் கையாக விருந்தது. மேழி யென்பது உழவின் சின்னமாகும். ஆதலால் உழ வாகியசெல்வம் குன்றுபடாது என்பது கருத்து. உழவின் பெருமையைத் தமிழ் இதிகாசங்களுள் ஒன்றுகிய இராமாயணத்தைத் தங்க கவி அரச ராகிய கம்பர் ஒர் இடத்தில்,

உலக மென்னும் கேருக்கு அச்சாணிபோன்ற உழவன், தனது தொழிலுக்கு அதிமுக்கியமாகக் கருது வது ஏராகும். மக்களுக்குச் சீரும் சிறப்பும் கொடுக்க வல்லது ஏர். இதனையே,
1 சீரைத் தேடின் ஏரைத் தேடு' என்கிருரர்கள். சைவசமயம் நலியுற்ற காலத்தில் அதனை மீட்கத் தோன்றிய சமயாசாரியர்களுள் ஒரு வ ரா கி ய மாணிக்கவாசகர் ஒர் அழகிய கிளியை விழித்து,

என்கிருரர். இச்சொற்ருெடர் எம்மை ஆச்சரியத்தில் ஆழ்த்துகின்றது. ஏன்? ஏர் அழகுள்ளதாம். ஏதோ கோணல் மாணலாகவும், கட்டை நெட்டையாக வும் உருவத்தில் அழகின்றித் திகழ் கின்றது. இது அழகா? ஆம். ஒரு பொருளை அழகுடையது என்று இரண்டு காரணத்தைக் கொண்டு

கூறலாம். ஒன்றில் அப்பொருளின் வெளித் தோற்றத்திலே அழகு மிளிர வேண்டும், இல்லையேல் அப்பொரு ளின் வெளித் தோற்றத்திலே அழகு மிளிர வேண்டும், இல்லையேல் அப் பொருளின் செயலிலே அழகு மிளிர வேண்டும். இங்கு, ஏரின் செயலிலே அழகு மிளிருகின்றதாதலால் ஏர் அழகுடையது. is .
மருத நிலத்தில் பயிர் செய்யும் உழவன் ஓர் தேசத் தியா கி. அவன் செய்யுந் தொழில் மிகவும் கடின மானது. அவன் வயலைப் பண்படுத்தி, பருவத்தே பயிர்செய்து, களைபறித்து, நீர்பாய்ச்சி, கண்ணிமை கண்னேக் காப்பதுபோல், ஆடு மாடுகள் பயிரை மேயாவண்ணம் பாதுகாத்துப் பயன் விளைப்பவன். அல்லும் பகலும் அவன் வேலை செய்வதனுல் அவனது உடம்பு உரத்துடன் விளங்குகின்றது. அவனது கடும் உழைப்பால் அவனே விவசாயி என்றும் அழைப்பர். விவ சாயம் என்பது ஒரு வடசொல். அதனகருதது உழைபபு. அவாகளது உழைப்பைப் பற்றிய பழமொழிகள் பல தமிழ்நாட்டில் உண்டு. அவற்றுள், * உழுகின்ற காலத்தில் ஊர்வழிபோனுல்

என்பதுவும் ஒன்று.

என்னுங் குறளிலிருந்து அறியலாம். இக்குறளில் வேளாண்மை என்ற சொல்லுக்கு பரோபகாரம் என்பது பொருள். உயர்ந்தோர்க்கு இருக்க வேண்டிய குணங்களுள் சொன்ன சொல் தவறுமையும்ஒன்று. இக்குணம் படைத்தவர்கள் உழவர்கள். இதனை விளக்கும் ஒரு கதையில், பழையனூர் என்னும் இடத்தில் வாழ்ந்த வேளா ளர்கள் எழுபதுபேர் ஒரு வழிப்போக் கனுக்குக் கொடுத்த வாக்குறுதியைக் காக்கும் பொருட்டுத் தமது அருமை யான உயிரை நெருப்பில் விழுந்து மாய்த்தனர் என்று இருக்கின்றது.
முற்கால உழவுத் தொழில் முறைக்கு எருதுகள் மிகவும் பயன் பட்டன. எருதின் அவசியத்தைப் புறநானூற்றில,

கல் தோன்றி மண் தோன்றுக் காலத்து முன் தோன்றி மூத்த குடி யினர் என்றெல்லாம் போற்றப்படு பவர்கள் தமிழர். தமிழர் நாகரிகம் எப்போது தொடங்கியது என்பது ஆராய்ச்சியாளர்களாலும் திடமாகக் கூறப்படவில்லை. இவ்வாறு சரித் திர ஆய்வாளர் தம் ஆராய்ச்சிக்கு அப்பாற்பட்ட காலம் தமிழர் காலம். தமிழ் என்று உதித்ததோ அன்றே
உதித்தது சைவம், முன்னுளில் தமிழும் சைவமும் தமிழர்களின் இரு கண்களாக மதிக்கப்பட்டன. அந்

குந்த ஊழல்கள்
சனேயால் தெற்கே விரட்டப்பட்டனர். தெற்கே வந்த திராவிடர் கம் விருந் தோம்பும் ஆற்றலை அங்கும் விட்டிலர். சுரண்டிப் பிழைக்கும் உன்மத்தர் கூட்டம் கெற்கேயும் வந்தது. வங் தோரை மீண்டும் வரவேற்றனர். அதன் பலன் ஆரியர் நாகரிகம், அவர் தம் சமயக் கொள்கைகள் சிறிது சிறி தாகத் தமிழர்களிடையே புகுத்தப் பட்டது. அவர்களின் தெய்வங்களும் திராவிடர் தம் தெய்வங்களுடன் இணைக்கப்பட்டன. இவ்வாறு தெய் வங்களின் பெயர் சொல்லி உண்டு கொழுத்தனர். மேலும் பாபம், புண்ணியம், நரகம், மோட்சம் என் னும் மந்திரங்களைச் செபித்து மக்களை மயக்கினர். வேள்வி முறையும் புகுத் கப்பட்டது. 'அவிசொரிந் தாயிரம் வேட்டலில் ஒன்றன் உயிர் செகுத் துண்ணுமை நன்று' என வாழ்ந்த தமிழர் வேள்வி செய்யத் தலைப்பட் டனர். சமஸ்கிருதம் ஆலயங்களில் பூசனைப்பாஷையாகத் -தெய்வபாஷை, யாக ஆக்கப்பட்டது. வடவர் பூசாரி களாயினர். இதனிமித்தம் வந்து சேர்ந்தோர் தாம் வாழவழி வகுத்துக் கொண்டனர்.
செய்தொழில் வேற்றுமையாலன்றி வேறு எதுவிதத்தாலும் சாதிபேதம் பாராட்டாத திராவிடர் வாழ்விற் சாதி பேதம் தலைதூக்கியது. பிரித்தாளும் சூழ்ச்சி கொண்ட ஆரியர் தம்மையே உயர்ந்த சாதியினராகக்கொண்டு நால் வகை வர்ணத்தினரைப் பிரித்தனர். இதன் பயன் நாட்டின் வளம்குறைய

ஆரம்பித்தது. இவ்வாறு புகுத்தட பட்ட ஆரிய நாகரிகம் முதலிற் சைவத் தின் விருத்தியைப் பாதிக்கவில்லை சைவத்தின் வளர்ச்சிக்கு இடையூறுக் இருந்த சமண புத்த மதங்கள் நாயன் மார்களால் நீக்கப்பெற்று மீண்டும் சைவம் மலரத் தொடங்கியது. இவ் வாறு வளர்ந்த சைவத்தின் இடையே பல மூடக் கொள்கைகள் புகுக்கட் பட்டன. பிராமணரைப் பூசித்தல் இன்றியமையாததாய் விட்டது. தவம் மறைந்து அல்லவை செய்வார் கூட்டம் தினம் தினம் பெருகத் தொடங்கியது. இல்லறமே 15 ல் லறமாகக் கொண்டு வாழ்ந்த திராவிடர் வாழ்வு சிதையத் தொடங்கியது. குடும்பபாரம் கூடிய வுடன் கணவன் மனைவியைப் பிரிந்து சன்னியாசம் பூணத் தொடங்கினன். இவ்வாறு புதன் மறைந்து புட்சிமிழ்ப் பார் தொகை கூடியதும் சைவத்தின் மகிமை குன்றத்தொடங்கியது. இவை பற்றிக் கேள்வி கேட்பாரை நாஸ்தி கன் என்றனர் ஆரியர். இதன் பயன் மறு சமயங்கள் வளர இந்தப் புனித மதமாம் இந்துமதம் அழியத்தொடங்கி யது; அழிந்துகொண்டே வருகின்றது.

சைவம் மீண்டும் தொன்மையுற வேண்டும். இந்த ஆவல் ஒவ்வோர் சைவாபிமானிக்கும் உண்டு. இந்த ஆவல் மாத்திரம் பயன்படமாட்டாது. ஆவல் செயற்பட்டாற்றுன் பயன் உண்டு. சாதி பேதம் பாராட்டி ஓர் குறிப்பிட்ட வகுப்பினரை ஒதுக்கும் வழக்கு ஒழிய வேண்டும். இது விட யத்தில் இலங்கைவாழ் இந்துமதத்தி னருக்கு இலங்கை ஆட்சிபீடம் மிக வும் உதவி புரிந்திருக்கின்றது. இல ங்கைவாழ் தமிழர் தம் உரிமை பறிக் கப்பட்டதும்தான் கங்க ளி  ைட யே உள்ள வேறுபாட்டை உணர்ந்தனர். அதன்பயன் கோயிற்கதவுகள் ஆண் டவன் தன் திருக்குமாரர்களுக்காகத் திறக்கப்பட்டன. ஆலயக் கதவுகள் திறந்ததுபோல் நம் உள்ளக் கதவுக ளும் திறந்து சமுதாயத்தில் அவர்கள் உரிய ஸ்தானம் வகிக்கும் நாள் தொலையில் இல்லை. பொது நலம் விரும் பும் அன்பர்கள் நம் தோழ ர் க ஞ க் காக நம் இதயக் கதவுகளையும் திறந்து சைவம் மலர நம்மிடையே வேறு பாடின்றி உழைப்பார்களாக,

என் ஆசையின் நிமித் தம் உன்னை ராஜி என்று அழைக்கிறேன். நான் இங்கே 'குமாஸ்தா'வாக ஒரு "நீதிபதி'யின் வீட்டிலே வேலைசெய்து வருகிறேன். என் எ ஜமா னு க்கு இரண்டு பிள்ளைகள் இருக்கிறர்கள். இங்கே "வள்ளி என்னும் வேலைக்காரி y யும் இருக்கிருள். இவள் 'மாங்கல் யம்' இழந்தவள். இவளுக்கு ஒரு "ஆசைமகன்' இருந்தானும், ஆல்ை 'அவன்" ஒருநாள் ஒரு வீட்டிலே “வைா மாலை"யைத் திருடியபடியால் அவனே வீட்டைவிட்டுத் துரத்திவிட்டார்களாம். அவன் இப்போது இதயகிதபுரத்தி லேயே ஓர் 'கோடீஸ்வரனுக' விளங்குகி முன்.

இலங்கையில், 1956-ம் ஆண்டு கூடிய விரைவில் பிரயாணஞ் செய்யத் தக்க ஒரு புகையிரகம் சில மாதங் களாகக் கொழும்புக்கும் யாழ்ப்பாணத் துக்கும் இடையில் ஓடிக்கொண்டிருக் கிறது. அதுதான் யாழ்தேவி என் றழைக்கப்படும் புகையிரதம்.
யாழ்தேவியைப் பார்ப்பதற்காகப் பல்லாயிரக் கணக்கான மக்கள் புகை யிரத நிலையங்களிலும், புகையிரத வீதி ஒரங்களிலும் காத்திருந்தனர். அன்று யாழ்தேவி பெற்ற வரவேற்பைப் பற்றிச் சொல்ல ஆயிரம் நாக்குள்ள ஆதிசேடற்ைரன் முடியும். ஆகை ய ல் அந்த வரவேற்பைப்பற்றியும் யாழ்நேவியின் அழகைப்பற்றியும் கூற ஆதிசேடனை விட்டுவிட்டு மேலே செல்வோம்.
யாழ்தேவியைக் கண்டவுடன் அதன்மீது ஏறிப் பிரயாணம் செய்ய வேண்டும் என்னும் அவா என் உள் ளத்துதித்தது. என் அவா பூர்த்தி யாகும் காலமும் வந்தது. என் தந்கை யார் என்னையும் என் சகோதரனையும் அனுராதபுரத்துக்குச் சென்று புத்த ஜயந்திக் கொண் டா ட் ட ங் க 2ள ப் பார்த்து வரும்படி கூறினர். ஆகவே அன்று பிற்பகல் 2-30 மணியளவில் யாழ்ப்பாணப் புகையிரத நிலையத்திற்

செய்த பிரயாணம்
குச் சென்று யாழ்நேவியில் ஏறி எங்கள் பிரயாணத்தை ஆரம்பித் தோம்.
புகையிரத நிலையத்தை விட்டுக் கிளம்பியதும் யாழ்தேவி காற்றிலும் கடிகாகப் பறந்தது. போகும் வழியிலே தென்பட்ட அலரிப்பூ மரங் களும் பச்சைப் பசேலென்று காட்சி யளித்த நெல்வயல்களும் எனது கண்ணுக்குக் குளிர்ச்சி யளித்தன. அப்போது சூரியன் மேற்குத் திசையை நோக்கிச் சென்றுகொண்டிருந்தான். வானம் செக்கச் செவேலெனக் காட்சி யளித்கமையால் ஆனையிறவுக் கடலி லுள்ள நீர் அந்நிறத்தைப் பிரதிபலித் துச் செங்கடலாகக் காட்சியளிப்பதை யும் பார்த்துக்கொண்டு சென்றுேம். இப்படியான இயற்கைக் காட்சிகளைப் பார்த்துக்கொண்டே சிலமணி நேரத் தில் அனுராதபுரத்தை அடைந்தோம்.
அங்கு தாகபாக்களையும், விகாரை களையும் பிரசித்தி பெற்ற இடங் களையும், புத்கஜயந்திக் கொண்டாட் டங்களையும் பார்வையிட்டுச் சில நாட்கள் சென்றபின் யாழ்தேவிமூலம் யாழ்ப்பாணம் வந்து சேர்ந்தோல்,

மனிதனை மகிழ்விக்கும் காட்சிகள்
பல. அவற்றுள் இயற்கைக் காட்சியும் ஒன்று. இவ்வியற்கைக் காட்சிகளின்மூலம் இயற்கை அன்னை கனது எழில்மிகு அழகினை வெளிப் படுத்துகின்றுள். நான் இங்கு கூறப் போகும் காட்சி நிலாக் காட்சியாகும்.
பகலென்னும் தேவனே இரு ளாகிய அரக்கி விழுங்கியவிடத்து. சந்திரனுகிய வேருெரு தேவர் படைத் தலைவன் தனது சைனியமாகிய நட்சத் திரங்களுடன் வருகிருரன். அந்நேரத் தில் பூமியும் பகல்போலப் பிரகாசித் தது. இந்நேரமே தமது தொழிலுக் குகந்த நேரமெனக்கொண்டு வேட்டை யாடுவோர் தமது துப்பாக்கி, மின் விளக்குகளுடன் வெளியே று கின் றனா.
இனி கடற்கரைக்குச் செல்வோம். அங்கு பல மனிதர்கள் கூடியிருந்தனர், தூரத்தில் நின்று பார்க்கும்போது கடற்கரை வனந்தரம் போலத் தோன் றியது. சிறுவர் சிறுமியர் அங்குமிங் கும் ஒடியாடி விளையாடினர். இளங் தம்பதிகள் இவர்களது விளையாட்டைப் பார்த்துக்கொண்டு தமது எதிர்காலத் திட்டத்தை வகுத்துக் கொண்டிருந் தனர். வியாபாரிகளோ அங்கு மிங் கும் ஒடித்திரிந்து கடலே முதலியன வற்றை விற்றுக்கொண்டிருந்தனர்.

கரையில் மோதி உடைந்தன. இதற் குக் காரணம் சந்திரனது கவர்ச்சியே
யாகும் என்கின்றனர் விஞ்ஞானிகள்.
கடலையே நம்பி வாழும் காரர்கள் கமது அலுவலேக் கவனிப்ப தற்காகத் தமது கோணிகளில் கடலே நோக்கிப் புறப்பட்டுக் கொண்டிருந் தனர். அந்நேரத்திலும் நமது உயி ரைத் தஞ்சமென மதித்து கடலில் மீன் பிடிக்கச் சென்றனர்.
இதற்கிடையில் அநேக மக்கள் தங்களது பகல் நேரத்து வேலையி னிமித்தம் களைத்து அயர்ந்திருக்கின் றனர். சில வீடுகளில் குத்துதல், அரைத்தல் முதலியவற்றைச் செய்து கொண்டிருந்தனர்.
கோழிகள், காகங்கள் பொழுது புலர்ந்து விட்டதென்று எண்ணித் தமது இன்னிசை, கானங்களை எழுப்பு கின்றன. அயர்ந்திருந்த மக்களுட் சிலர் விடிந்துவிட்டது என்று எண்ணி விழிக்கின்றனர். தமது அறியாமையை எண்ணி மீண்டும் அவர்கள் நித்திரைக் குச் செல்கின்றனர்.
இதற்குள் எனக்கு நித்திரை வரு கின்றமையால் இத்துடன் எனது சிறு கட்டுரையை முடிக்கின்றேன்.
