Ihave great pleasure insending this message for the second volume of the “Jaffna Scrabbler”. Iam happy to note that the members ofthe Scrabbler club are evincing a greatinterestinthe affairs of the club. The members would by now have realized the great value of Scrabble. The growing importance of English and the move by the governmenttomake Englishacompulsory subject would be sufficientreasons for students to join the Scrabble club and involvethemselves inits functioning. Iam sure one would be able to enhance one's knowledge of English especially the vocabulary by enrollingas a members of the club.
Scrabble could be of lifelong interestanda useful leisure timeactivitysothatthemembersofthe Scrabble Clubcouldcontinue to evince an interest in Scrabble even after their school career. With this aim in view its planned to organize a Jaffna District Scrabble Association.

MESSAGE FROM SRI LANKA SCRABBLE LEAGUE
The Launch of the Second Edition of the Journal-Jaffna Scrabbler
It gives me great pleasure to address the Scrabblers of Jaffna with in a period of two years, in an exemplary fashion, with much enthusiasm, you have formed many Scrabble clubs in Schools, and now quite ready to amalgamate into a Districtscrabble ASSociation, to be officially registered as a sports body and carried out Scrabble after your School career as a life long activity.
I am happy to announce that the Education Ministry, with the help of UNESCO, Light House Schools Project will be providing two Scrabble boards and the various Dictionaries to schools below the level of National Schools, spending $50,000.We will be counting on the Jaffna District Scrabble Association and Jaffna Hindu College Scrabble Club to provide workshops on Scrabble to train the teachers and the students of these schools.
The planto provide Scrabble equipment to the National Schools, with the help of the Asian Development Bank, was shelved for this year, due to extra requirements caused by the Tsunami. However a promise has been made to provide such help in the 2006 budget.
As you know, Chambers has broken away from the official Scrbble scene, to be replaced by Collins. But the initial Scrabble words and Scrabble list produced by Collins have not been accepted by the Scrabbling world. Another modified edition of both these volumes will be made available towards the end of this year. So, it is best that those wishing to buy new Scrabble dictionaries and lists, hold on for a few months, awaiting decisions by the world scrabble bodies.

The publication of this magazine has been made possible by the good will extended all round by our well wishers and members. It has been our endeavour to develop the knowledge and skills of our members and create and interestamong them by the publication of relevent articles covering this field. How to play Scrabble? To begin Turn all tiles face down at the side of the board, or put them into the bag provided, and shuffle. Draw for first play. The player drawing the tile nearest the beginning of the alphabet plays first. Put the exposed tiles back and reshuffle. Each player then draws seven new tiles and places them on his rack.
One player is elected as scorekeeper. He may also take partin the game.
Method of Play 1. the first player combines two or more of his tiles to form a word and places them on the board to read either across or down with one tile on the center Square (Star). 2. A player completes his turn by counting and announcing his score for the turn which is recorded by the scorekeeper. He then draws as many new tiles as he has played, thus always keeping seventilesin his rack. 3. Play then passes to the left. The second player, then each in turn, adds one or more tiles to those already played So as to form new words. All tiles played in any one turn must be placed in one row across or down the board. Diagonal words are not permitted. The tiles played must form one complete word and if, at the same time, they touch othertiles in adjacent rows, they must form complete words crosswordfashion, with all such tiles. The player gets full credit for all words formed or modified by his play.
4. New words may be formed by:
a). Adding one or more tiles to a word already on the
board.

b). Placing a word at rightangles to a word already on the board. The new word must use one of the letters of the word already on the board or must add a letter to it (turns 2 & 4). It may also “bridge' two or more words (turn 5) c). Placing a complete word parallel to a word already played so that adjoining tiles also form complete words. . No tile may be shifted after it has beenplayed. . The two blank tiles may be used as any letter desired. When playing ablank the player must state what letteritrepresents, after which it cannot be changed during the game. ... Any player may use his turn to replace any orall of the tiles in his rack. He does so by discarding them face down, drawing the same number of new tiles, then mixing the discarded tiles with those remaining in the pool. He then awaits his next turn to play.
Instead of placing tiles on the board, or exchanging tiles, a player may also pass, whether or not he is able to make a word (or words).
However, should all players pass twice insuccession, the game ends.
. Permitted Words: Any words listed in a standard English dictionary are permitted except those only spelt with an initial capital letter, abbreviations, prefixes and suffixes and words requiringapostrophes and hyphens. Foreign words inastandard English dictionary are considered to have been absorbed into the Englishlanguage andare allowed. Consultadictionary only to checkspelling or usage. Any word may be challenged before the next player starts his turn. If the word challenged is unacceptable, the playertakes back histiles and loses his turn. . The game ends when all the tiles have been drawn and one of the player has used all the tiles in his rack. the game also ends

The scorekeeper keeps a tally of each player's score, entering it after each turn on the score pad. The score value of each letterisindicated by a numberat the bottom ofthetile. The score value of a blank is Zero. The score for each turnis the sum of the score values of all the tiles in each word formed or modified in that turn plus the premium values resulting from palcingtiles on premium Squares. Premium letters Squares: Alight blue square doubles the score of a letter placed on it; a dark blue Square trebles the letter score. Premium Word Squares: The score for the entire word is doubled when one of its tiles is placed on a lightred square; it istrebled when atile is placedona dark red Square. Include premiums for double or triple letter values, if any, before doubling or trebling the word score.
If a word is formed that covers two premium word squares, the score is doubled then re-doubled(4 times letter score or trebled and then retrebled (9 times letter score)) as the case maybe.
Note that the centre square (star) is a light red square and therefore doubles the score for the first word.
The above letter and wordpremiums apply only in the turn in which they are first played. In subsequent turns tiles count at face value. When ablank tile falls on a light red or dark red square, the sum of the tiles in the word is doubled or trebled even though the blank itselfhas no score value.

16. When two or more Words are formed in the same turn, each is Scored. The common letteris counted (withfull premium value, if any) in the score for each word.
17. Any player who plays all seven of his tiles in a single turn scores a premium of 50 points are added on after doubling or tripling a word score.

TOURNAMENT RULES
STANDARD RULES The standard Scrabble Rules (1998) as published by. J. W. Spears & Sons plc., are the rules for the competition except specifically changed by any of the following rules.
CHECKENGTILES Before and after each game, players should arrange the tiles into a 10 x 10 gird. If there are any tiles missing, players should immediately notify an official.
WORD RULES No dictionaries or reference papers will be permitted to be carried into the playing area by the players. The official dictionary for this competition will be Official Scrabble Words I. If in this, the word will be allowed. For nine or more letter root Words, the Lexpert Program on the computer will be used.
TIME (Differs for players using Clocks) One hour will be allowed to complete each game. If it has not been completed within that time, the score at the end of 60 minutes will be the one recorded for the players. Both players should have played an equal number of times. If a word has just been placed on the board and there are still tiles in the bag, the player must refill his/her rack, and then each player deducts the points of the tiles in his/her rack from their score.
LATE PLAYERS (Differs for players using Clocks) Late players will be given 10 minutes grace after which the opponents will receive a walkover, unless previously arranged with both adjudicator and the opponent.
STARTINGTHE GAME Games will be conducted in pairs. Draw for start of play. In the event of a player drawing a blank, the player who draws a blank, starts.
DRAWING TELES 翻 The correct way of drawing tiles from the bag is to hold the bag shoulder height and take out promptly one tile at a time, placing them face down in front of the rack to verify that there are only seven. If you draw too many tiles, or become aware at any time that you have more than 7 tiles on your rack, inform your opponent. The following penalty applies where

X=NUMBER OF EXTRATILES. If you have combined none of the newly drawn tiles with your old tiles, your opponent selects (X+2) randomly from the new tiles (face down). If you have combined in the least one tile with your old tiles, your opponent selects the (X+2) tiles from the mixed group of all new and tiles. In either case your opponent exposes the selected tiles ace up to common view, and then within one minute returns X tiles of his/her choice to the bag and the remaining 2 tiles to you. If a player wishes to shuffle the tiles, it must be done from outside the bag.
RECORDNG SCORE Only official score sheets are allowed. Each player will record score, cumulative total and bonus words played after each move. Your score must be confirmed by your opponent and recorded by you before drawing new tiles. After each of your opponent's moves you must enter the agreed score
and cumulative total in the opponent's section of the sheet before making your move.
COMPLETING THETURN (Differs for players using Clocks) Sequentially, this is how a turn proceeds:
1. After your opponent's turn ends, record the cumulative score
before beginning your play. 2. Position your tiles on the board. You may remove or reposition your tiles as you like to change your play during your turn. 3. Announce the letter the blank represents, if applicable. 4. Announce the score, ending your turn. 5. Record the cumulative score to that point in the game. You may
NOT pre-record the cumulative score.
EXCEPTION:
Steps 1 and 5, recording the cumulative score, are waived if there are no tiles remaining to draw.
CHALLENGES (Differs for players using clocks) A move may be challenged only once, and also only after the opponent has ended his turn. When a word is challenged, it shall be written on a challenge slip shown to an official and sent to the adjudicator's table. A player may ask the decision to be rechecked once, only if it is thought that a mistake has been made. The adjudicator's decision is then final. A word may not be challenged after a score has been confirmed and recorded.

Words that are acceptable will be indicated by a tick (W) against “allowed", those unacceptable by a cross (X) against “not allowed". In the case of multiple challenges, if one or more words are unacceptable, the adjudicators will merely say not allowed. Words not accepted are removed from the board, recorded as disallowed and the player misses a turn. If the word is accepted, the challenger dose not missa turn & the player whose word is challenged adds 5 points to his score for that move. If you do not challenge at once but are considering a challenge, call “HOLD" to notify your opponent not to draw replacement tiles. However after one minute of hold time has elapsed, your opponent may draw and look at replacement tiles, keeping them separate from any un played tiles. If you then successfully challenge the play, your opponent shows the replacement tiles to you and returns them to the bag before removing his/her play from the board.
CHANG NGTLES During the game, tiles may be changed. When tiles are changed, the player misses a turn and the word “change' shall be written on the score sheets. The correct way of changing is to place the tiles being discarded on the table, face down, draw and place the new tiles on the table checking that the correct number are being changed, return the discarded tiles to the bag before placing the new tiles on your rack. Changes oftiles are not permitted if there are fewer than seventiles remaining in the bag. If in doubt, ask an official to check the number of tiles in the bag.
PASSING A player may pass instead of placing tiles or changing them. A pass is entered as "pass' on the score sheet. Should both players pass thrice in succession, the game ends. Apartform this, there is no limit to the number of times a player may pass during a game. VERIFYING THE SCORE (Differs for players using Clocks)
Throughout the game you should verify that your record of the score agrees with your opponent's. Ask for verification only while it is your turn. Your opponent must respond by agreeing or disagreeing with the suggested score.
ABSENCEDURING THE GAME (Differs for players using clocks) If either player must leave the board temporarily, they must do so with the Adjudicator's permission.

FINALSCORE At the end of the game, each player's score is reduced by the sum of his/ her own unplayed tiles, and, if one player has used all his/her letters, that
players score is increased by the sum of unplayed letters in the opponent's hand.
COMPLETED SCORESHEETS The score sheet should be tallied checked and signed as correct by the opponent and retuned to an official. Once score sheets have been handed in. the scores will be taken as final.
RANKING Two points will be awarded for each win. If two players draw, this will be counted as one point for each of them. Ranking will be done by first preference of win points and second preference of win/loss margin. At any point of ranking if 2 or more players have an equal number of win points, the players getting the higher rank will be the one with the widest margin(cumulative) of winning; and if none, then with the narrowest margin of-- 1.
In the event of a player receiving a “bye', the player will be awarded 2 points and a margin of + 150, while the player who conceded the walkover will receive 0 points and a margin of- 150.
ETOUETTE No spectators will be permitted into the playing area and all players should be mindful of the general rules of etiquette by not causing inconvenience to other players by way of behaviour, smoking or noise. Food and drinks may not be brought into the playing area. No discussions will be permitted in the playing area. The officials will have the authority to request any participant disrupting the proceedings to leave the playing area. Mobile phones must be switched off in the playing area.
DECSIONS The adjudicator's decision will be final in all matters. The organizers will not enter into correspondence with regard to this competition.

Names of popular flowers or plants are valid Scrabble words. Here's arichhaulofshort and long words bearing names offlowers from the tropics and temperate climes, that are familiar to most of us. They range from Azalea to Zinnia, and are arranged in alphabetic order. Very short words like Arum, Rose, Lily and Daisy are the flowers likely to be played in Scrabble. Very long names of flowers are excluded due to their improbability of usage. Words may beformed by extensions infront, like FOX-GLOVE, JASMINE. Briefgrammatical notes followin some instances.

There are over 1100 three-letter words that are validly playable in a game of Scrabble. Leaving aside the easier ones, learning the rest is a formidable task. Thus its best to study them in

This article describes three-letter words that are names of letters, in alphabetic order. They are taken from the English, (26) Greek (24), and Hebrew alphabets. Almost all of them could be pluralized. There may be other definitive meanings to this group of

BEE - the letter “B”.
CEE - the letter"C", or anything of that shape.
CHI - is a Greek letter.
IDEE - the letter"D", or anything of that shape. (also used as a

The Sri Lanka Scrabble Association had its beginnings in late 2002. It was initiated as a joint project with the Lions Club of Moratuwa, and continues to be so.
Our aim was to broaden the scope of the game of Scrabble in outstations and to bring the game to a larger clientele.
Ours is a vibrant, people - friendly, non-profit organization, now entering its third year of existence. Our Association is open to anyone, regardless of age, gender or race. The junior brigade starts from around ten years and the oldest player is an octogenerian.
The Lions Club of Moratuwa has not spared any efforts to allow us to use their premises for Saturday afternoon games for past three years. well-wishers from both the Lions and our own members have generously contributed to the trophy challenge cups and shields.
We charge a nominal sum per mensem to keep our Association going. Members meet regularly every Saturday afternoon from 2.00 to 6.00pm. to play three to four games. Statistics are maintained, and members are categorized according to playing ability. Twice a year, on successive weekends, our members vie for the "Scrabbler of the Year” contest. The top eight players play each other on around-robin basis to win the Centurion Challenge Cup.
An Open Tournament has been held at the air - conditioned Conference Hall of Lyceum International, Nugegoda, annually. We have had around 60 players taking part, where a healthy competition and a sense of bonhomie prevailed. Many prizes were on offer.
We hope to live to our motto “Good, Better, Best” designated in our logo, and wish to register our Association in the coming year.

In 1989, a group of People, Ms. Gillian Perera, Mr. Pratap Gunaratne, Mr. Shantha Jayasuriya, Ms. Bernadette desilva, Ms. Rochelle Soza and Mr. Marikkar. decided to form the Sri Lanka
Scrabble League.
The first Annual General Meeting was held in 1990. The first President was. Mr. Pratap Gunaratne. The initial meetings were held at the Alliance France. Soon the league was transferred to Devassuriya Sena Centre, Playing Scrabble every Sunday from 1.00PM to 6.00PM, holding Annual National Tournaments at the Hilton Hotel and yearly Inter-School Scrabble Tournaments.
About four years we shifted to a better location at Sumithrayo's 60, Horton place, Colombo-07 ...ဒုံ
The tournaments are also held at the same premises. However the numbers wishing to take part at the NationalTournamenthas grown so large that we will have to holditat larger premises next year.

in Sept. 2005 with the sole intention of building up the standards of English among the youth of the Jaffna district, besides introducing the Jaffna youth to a valuable leisure time activity even after their School career. Scrabble was introduced in the schools of Jaffna in 2003 and its encouraging to note that the student population have evinced great interest in this activity and eagerly participate in its various programmes. We are desirous of building up Scrabble as a lifelong activity and desire that the student population continue their interest in this field. One way by which we could meet this need is, we felt by inaugurating the Jaffna District Scrabble Association. This would also give the Members social recognition besides a valuable past time we desire that all inerested in Scrabble join this Association by getting its free membership and build it up as a valuable organization, by participating in the running of the Association and being deeply involved in it.

We feel that one way members could help in building up our association is by setting up Branch Clubs in their areas of residence independently or in association with local institutions such as Community Centres, Rural Development Centres, YMCH and YMHA and have them affiliated to the parent body - J.D.S.A. We plan to organize a district level scrabble competition among its members as an annual open competition. So that we could make this association live.
