It is both a pleasure and a great privilege for us at Jaffna Hindu to welcome you all once again to this Prize Giving These are difficult days for bigger schools, like ours with numerous problems of administration, a C". commodation and organization of work, Your presence is evidence of your appreciation of our efforts to overcome these difficulties and we feel greatly encouraged by it
We consider it a great honour to have Mr. and Mrs. Siva Supramaniam with us today as our Chief Guests. In fact, we were looking forward to their visit last year but it had to be put off on account of pressure of official duties of Mr. Siva Supramaniam. We welcome you, Sir, as one of our most distinguished Old Boys. You hail from a family that has added lustre to your Alma Mater; your father served for many years as a member of the Board of Directors of Jaffna Hindu College and all your brothers who completed their school career here have acquitted themselves very creditably in their respective roles in life. You had a brilliant career as a student here; your career after school has been equally brilliant. You have distinguished yourself in the legal profession; as a judge you have won regard for your sense of justice For the proud record you hold in the Judicial Service we feel that your elevation to greater eminence is long over due. The College is indebited to your selfless labours particularly as Secretary of the O B A that organized a very successful Carnival to Collect funds for the college. And yet it is not your achievements, nor your services to your old school that we value most but your qualities as a man - your sweet temper, sane outlook and humility - qualities that are needed most in our country today. It is for me a personal pleasure that we are able to honour you in

his way and present you to our boys and say, 'Here is the model of a man you must all emulate.'
To you, Mrs. Siva Supramaniam, we are obliged for , accepting our invitation and consenting to give away the awards. As the devoted wife of one of our devoted Alumni you have an honoured place in dur school community. Your presence with us is pure joy to us, especially to our boys who will receive their prizes from your hands.
In a couple of years Jaffna Hindu College will complete three quarters of a century. The old school tie which may appear unfashionable in this era of state schools is strong in me when I recall my association with the school for 46 years both as student and teacher. I cannot resist the thought that the great work which started in the school has spread out to affect the society in which we live; this work, in God's name, has been made possible by the efforts of many people - by those who founded this great institution, by those who served in it, by those who learned in it and by those who in many ways had its interest at heart. The story of the school's origin and growth reads like a saga; and its activities have never been animated by any form of religious rivalry inspired by any crusade against other religions. In fact one of our great Principals, Mr. Nevins Selvadurai whose regime of about three decades saw vast progress was himself a devout Christian; and I wonder if it is widely known tinat he was the first to found the YMHA at school.
In our country today we are suffering from want of understanding. Whether it is between the Sinhalese and the Tamil or the Buddhist and the Catholic we are up acqainst the same difficulty. The position is infinitely worse in some other countries of South East Asia. It is a sad irony that in this centenary year of Swami Vivekananda this tragedy is being reenacted in

the belief that one's religion is the only true religion and that God is the exclusive property of a group of people It is refreshing to remember what the Swami said when he spoke of the Hindu Religion: 'It will be a religion which has no place for persecution or intolerance in its policy, which will recognize divinity in every man and woman whose whole scope, whose whole force will be centred in aiding humanity to realize its own true and divine nature.'
It speaks volumes for the greatness of those heroes who are now gone that they left us a great legacy and the future depends upon those of today. It is some satisfaction that we are able to continue in this age of fear and strife our great tradition that trains our students in the quality of unqualified friend. liness to everyone. But education today has to link up science with moral values and turn out new men needed for the new World whioh is deeply concerned with science and technology. There can be no progress unless we co-ordinate improvement in man with advance in scientific knowledge. Trevelyan the English historian says " " It is significant of much that in the 17th century the Members of Parliament quoted from the Bible; in the 18th and 19th centuries from the Classics; in the 20th century from nothing at all'. Hence we need religion as a complement to science and also as a Corrective. No nation Can Survive if it neglects the discipline of the spirit. Ours therefore is a particularly difficult task here because the modern scientific outlook must be reconciled with attachment to our old culture and traditions; yet it is not an impossible one, for the findings of science do not go contrary to the doctrines of our religion.
As one reviews the buildings extension programme initiated by the College and the OBA one is reminded of the greatest educational issue of our time - the

proper balance of the curriculum. A pupils environment, it is stated, exists at three levels - the subhuman studied in the Sciences, the human studied in the Humanities and the superhuman studied in Religion and all that goes to the formation of character. The growing pressure on schools like ours to produce more and more potential doctos, engineers, and technologists has given this issue an immediate urgency. The increasing competition for University places is one of the root causes of premature spe. cialisation in schools. In our plan of building operations, we have provided for the three levels: a three storeyed block for science in the campus at the College Road; our original buildings in the quadrangle for the Humanities; and the the temple with a Maha Mandapam for our spiritual needs. There is also provision to extend the a playground by acquiring the adjoining land and to imimprove it for team games to be played according to Public School standards. The Cumaraswamy Hall admit. tedly one of the biggest Halls in the country will when fully equipped coordinate all forms of corporate life and cultural activities at School. This is indeed an ambitious project that needs about five lakhs of rupees to complete.
As we are now a vested School, there is a feeling 이 uncertainty and doubt in view of tine changes contem. plated. The State has not only the last word but even the first word. A new school System recommended by the National Education Commission threatens to split secondary education at standard eight and to set up separate senior schools on the basis of the Courses they offer. We are afraid that truncated Secondary education cannot train character. Besides, in a time of expansion and experimentation, it is important to have here and there an institution which can set the standard for the rest. Educational advance has been Compared to the progress of an earthworm which begins by pushing forward its head and groping until the head has found an

anchorage; and then bit by bit draws up the rest of its body. We must allow the earthworm to have its head. The state is planning for the educational advance of a whole people; and we have to create the conditions which will make that advance possible. One way of doing this is to allow a national institution like ours to develop according to the ideals for which it has been founded.
The daily spectacle in our school of more than one thousand students being huddled into mere Contraptions conveniently called laboratories is a rather depressing one. Within the last two decades our science section has been expanding at a phenomenal pace on account of the consistently good results at the University Entrance Examination. There is also a move to relieve congestion at the University of Ceylon by raising one of our secondary schools to University status, The Claims of Jaffna Hindu with an enviable tradition for studies and sports, we feel, will not be ignored. It would therefore be wise to invest in scientific education and resume building operations without delay. But neither the state which has to look after all its Schools and ensure equality of opportunity for the neglected sectors, nor the public which has been tapped too frequently could shoulder the burden singly. It is necessary to mobilise voluntary efiort on all fronts and launch on a national scale a School Improvement Programme to which governmental authorities, voluntary bodies, parents, Old Boys and the public could make significant contributions to complete such urgent tasks as the one we have in hand.
Having tried to restate our aims, I now turn to report on our activities during the period under review. Our number on roll today is la4l with 77 Erseives: pupils in the Primary classes, 543 in the Middle School and 82l in the Upper school. The primary classes (Stds, IV & V) have been a drag

The need for classrooms still continues inspite of the new block put up on the northern wing of the quadrangle. The new admiBuildings and Equipment: nistration block - a two storey ed structure with rest rooms and other amenities for the staff is being built on the eastern wing of the quadrangle at a cost of Rs. 30,000/- in a strategic position as it were, having an over all Control of the different sections of the school. When the office is shifted to the new block the main entrance will be closed up and the entrance on the college road will be used as the main entrance. The spate of building improvements this year includes sanitary facilities and water service to the Jubilee Block, the construction of a drain on the northern boundary leading to the main road, renovation of the temple and a sports pavilion. All these additions have been made possible by the regular payment of facili ties fees by a fair proportion of parents. I must also express my gratitude to Mr. S. Ponnampalam an Old
Boy who has been of immense help in ensuring speedy execution of building work well within the estimated
cost.
Science equipment Cost us about Rs. 9,500/- during this period and class room furniture about Rs. 11,500. The latter includes furniture worth over Rs 9000 supplied by the Department. If this is a fore taste of things to come the prophets of doom who bewail the fate of vested schools are proved wrong.
The day-to-day routine of School administration and pressure of increased work in the office has been eased by the appointment of an additional clerk Administration: Mr. M. Nadarajah who was the clerk of the Board of Directors before the take over. It is a happy sign that since the Departs

ment's scheme of decentralisation came into force, the relations between the College and the Regional Office have been cordial. There is nothing more essential for the smooth running of the school than the idea that the Education Office and we are co-workers in a great cause and that the office and its staff exist for the schools where alone education takes place.
Perhaps the only notable event during this period is the retirement of Mr. K. S. Subramaniam from teaching. Happily /* K. S. S. ' is Continu. Changes in the Staff: ing as Warden and hence we have not felt the impact of his absence in the classroom or the staff room. Mr. Subramaniam has spent nearly five decades here both as student and teacher. The Hostel is his handiwork and generations of students will remember him. with love and regard as their guide, philosopher and friend. As a disciplinarian, organiser and builder his record is hard to beat. It will certainly be a problem to find a suitable successor who can maintain the lofty traditions in diet and discipline for which our Hostel is so famed, While we therefore pray that he should continue as long as possible, we wish him peace and happiness in his partial retirement.
We must also record here our appreciation of the services of the following teachers who left us in the Course of the period under review and wish them success in their new spheres of activity.

We have introduced Daily Morning Assembly for Prayers and the College divides itself into three sections for this purpose. On every Religious and Cultural Friday morning the College priest Activities: conducts a poojah and a member of the staff gives a brief talk. As usual the Gurupoojahs of Saiva Saints, the MahaSivarathiri, Navarathiri, and the annual pilgrimage to Thiruketheswaram were organized. On the cultural side Bharathi Day was celebrated in an impressive manner. There were special assemblies on Mahatma Gandhi's Birthday, Thiruvalluvar Day and the U. N. Day. The greatest event in the College during the period was the Swami Vivekananda Centenary Celebrations. Swami Ranganatha Ananda of the » Ramakrishna Mission in Calcutta delivered a soul stirring address on ''The Message of Swami Vivekananda' to a very representative gathering. Some of our senior students took part in Shramadana Work Camp at Kilinochchi and were commended for their work by the organisers. We presented 67 students for the religious examinations conducted by the Wive. . kananda Society Colombo; 46 passed with two in the 'A' Division. We are grateful to Mr. K. S. Mylvaganam who was in charge of the Y. M. H. A. last year and to Mr. V. Erambamoorthy who has taken over this year,

The School Societies and clubs continued their activities as in previous years. The H. S. C. Science Association held a seminar and social twice Societies: during this period. The Historical and Civic Association, The Geographic Society, the Tamil Peravai, the Film Club the Garden Club - all these functioned with normal efficiency. We are grateful to the British Council, The American Embassy and the Czecho Slovakian Embassy for lending us very instructive films. It is heartening to note that all these various activities have widened the boundaries of school life and are fostering leadership among students.
In the N. P. T. A. Music competition this year, the College won the first place in the Junior Group and was awarded the Navaliyoor Elocution and Music : Somasundara Pulavar Shield. In individual singing S. Ragavan won the first place in the Seniors and N. Raveendran won the first place in the Juniors. Ragavan also won the 2nd place in English Elocution in the Inters.

dents of the College celebrated its Silver Jubilee with a special number which was greatly appreciated by our readers. We congratulate the Editors on this worthy effort. -
We realise the need to make the library more adequate but we could not spend much on it during this period on account of our The Library: building programme. We are therefore specially indebted to the Government of India who presented to us very valuable volumes on Indian History, Culture, Art and Architecture. We do appreciate the kind gesture of Mr. P. R. S. Mani the Deputy High Commissioner of India in Ceylon for handing over the gift in person. We are also thankful to the British Council for their gift of books

on the teaching of English as a second language. The latest additions to the library are some very valuable volumes on the World's Great Religions presented to us by Mr. W. E. Packianathan an Old Boy of ours presently in California working as a librarian. Our thanks are due to him.
Our number in the Hostel today is 260. There has been the usual rush for admission to the Hostel this year and we had to keep many appliThe hostel : cants in the waiting list for long periods. The Prefect system is proving effective. Mr. A. Ponnambalam is helping Mr K. S. Subramaniam the Warden, and his assistant Mr. A. Namasivayam as Resident Master I had many occasions during this period to catch a glimpse of the group life of our hostellers and felt very happy. The H. S. C. Hostellers had their Annual Dinner with Dr. C. Mylvaganam as the Chief Guest.
In sports, we have no spectacular successes to record this year. The House System continues to coordinate the activities quite happily. In Crder to give Sports: greater attention to and promote our standards in sports Mr. P. Ehamparam has been appointed to assist Mr. P. Thiagarajah our veteran Sports Master.
In the J. S. S. A. tournaments our First and Second Eleven teams failed to qualify for the finals but became runners-up in their respective groups. Soccer: In the Inter House Competitions of last year Selvadurai House won the Junior Championship while Nagalingam and Sabapathy tied for the Senior Championship.
We were not up to our usual standards in Cricket. Our First Eleven played seven matches; won Cricket: two; drew one; and lost four. Cur Second Eleven tipped to win the Championship lost it in the Finals with Mahajana College.

We entered the Northern Physical Training Competitions for the first time and obtained the first place in both the Senior and the InterP. T. Competitions: mediate groups. Our Intermediate Squad was adjudged the best P. T. Squad in the under 16 group and in all the groups put together
We won the Diana Challenge Cup for Relay events at the J S S A Athletic Meet this year for the third time. Our Intermediate Relay Team established a Athletics: new record and S. Ramachandran won the Individual Championship. The Annual InterHouse Meet this year was held under the patronage of Mr. W. M. Cumaraswamy, Magistrate Mallakam and one of our Old Boys. It was keenly contested and Casipillai House became Champions with Nagalingam a close second.
Cadeting is going on as usual with Lieut. S. Parameswaran in charge of the Senior Cadets and Cadeting: Mr. N. Somasundaram in charge of the Juniors. Our Cadets attended their annual training Camp at Diyatalawa accompanied by Mr. P. Ehamparam as Our Senior Cadet Officer was ill.
Our Scout Troop has fared very well during this period. In the Chips-for-Job collections they topped the list by collecting Rs. 1076 - the highest Scouting: amount ever recorded. 17 Scouts were awarded the First Class badges. 30 of our Scouts have finished the First Aid Course and 8 Scouts have fully qualified themselves for the award of the Oueen's Scout Badge - the highest honour a boy scout could achieve. We also presented the largest contingent from Jaffna to the Silver Jubilee Jamboree at Anuradhapura. We Congratulate Mr. T. Sivarajah General Scout Master, Mr. S. C. Muthucumaran and Mr. W. Sivasubramaniam Scout Masters and Mr. R. S. Sivanesarajah the Cub Master On this very creditable record.

In the August examination 24 students passed in six or more subjects and 37 students in five subjects. In the December examination 32 students passed in six or more subjects and 40 students passed in five subjects.
H. S. C. Examination, December 196l.
Fourteen students qualified for the H. S. C. This includes two students who passed in the First Division and two others who completed the H. S. C.
H. S. C. Examination, December 1962.
Twelve students passed the H. S. C. including four passes in the First Division. Fourteen students were referred for a pass.
Ceylon University Preliminary Examination 1962.
35 students were successful in obtaining admision to the University of Ceylon. Arts 9, Medicine 4, Dental Surgery l, Veterinary Science l, Biological Science l, Agriculture l, Engineering 6 and Physical Science 12.
We must make special mention of one of our students - S. Selvalingam who on the results of the Entrance Examination was exempted from the first examination in Engineering and allowed to register for the Final Examination ( Part II). -
We are also proud to note that our students in the University are continuing to do well. Six of them obtained First Class in the B. Sc. (Gen ) Examination of the University of Ceylon this year and we congratulate Messrs. S. Kailayapillai, N. Nadarajapillai, K. Raja. ratnam, M. Magesan, S. Ponnampalapillai and P. Mathiaparanam on this splendid achievement.

Essay Prize
W. Siva Subramaniam of the H. S. C. who won admission to the Faculty of Medicine this year won the First Prize in the All Island Schools Essay competition conducted by the Ceylon Chemical Society in 1962. This is the second time that one of our students won this prize within the last three years.
The O. B. A. Continues to be a source of strength, showing its interest in the school. The Executive met regularly to consider matters pertaining to The 0. B. A. the development programme of the College and other special needs. The Colombo Branch which was inactive for some years was revived last year. We offer our felicitations to all our Alumni who serve the country in positions both high and low and our College Magazine will list the news of their doings and attainments. The College records with pride and joy the elevation of three of our Old Boys to positions cf. very great responsibility We congratulate Mr. M. Sri Kantha, the Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Land, Irrigation and Power, Mr S. Carthigesu, Surveyor General and Mr. A. M. A. Azeez, Member of the Public Service Commission and wish then success in their new roles. I must also refer with sorrow to the death of one of our eminent Old Boys - Mr. W. A. Kandiah M. P. for Kayts whose services to the country and to his community have been quite outstanding.
In concluding this report let me first thank Mr. S. U. Somasegaram the Assistant Director of Education, Northern Region and his staff who have always Thanks: been accommodating with their help and advice in the numerous details of administrative problems. To my office staff I am grateful for their cooperation in the day-to-day routine of school administration, The Vice-Principal and all the other teachers have helped me in every possible way in the smooth running of the school. I must offer my thanks to them for their

loyalty and friendship and to all the members of the non-teaching Staff and others who have helped me. I must also tender my gratitude to all Parents, Old Boys and Well-wishers who responded so readily to our call for donations to the Prize Fund.
My special thanks are due to Mr. and Mrs. V. Siva Supramaniam for having accepted our invitation to be our Chief Guests on this occasion.
Finally, I thank, you all ladies and gentlemen for your kind presence this evening
Let me address the last words of this report to my colleagues on the the teaching Staff. The Country and our community are passing through a grave Conclusion: Crisis, Our times are changing as times never changed before. These changes impose new tasks on Our Schools. But it must be realised that all reform in education depends on the quality of the teachers. The problems that beset our schools are so great and numerous that we must uphold one another in effective team work if we are to maintain the tradition of this great institution. It is our right to fight for better wages and status and political rights but let us remember - and I feel it in my bones as a teacher for thirty five years - that our first duty and loyalty is to the children in our charge. It is a Source of comfort that in many schools, especially in schools like ours, we have teachers who are fully conscious of their responsibility and work with a sense of mission. It is on the service of such men and women rather than on the pompous plans of our legislators that the future of education in this country will depend.

பூரீசிவசுப்பிரமணியம் தம்பதிகளே! இங்கு கூடி யிருக்கும் தாய்மார்களே! அன்பர்களே! இவ்வாண் டின் பரிசளிப்புத் தினமாகிய இன்று உங்களனைவரை யும் மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் வரவேற்கும் பாக்கியம் எனக்குக் கிடைத்திருக்கிறது. நிர்வாகம், இடவசதி, கல்வி விருத்திக்குரிய மேலான திட்டங்களே வகுத்தல் போன்ற பலவிதமான பிரச்சினைகள் நிறைந்துள்ள நமது கலாசாலையைப்போன்ற பெரிய ஸ்தாபனங்க ளுக்கு நெருக்கடிகள் பல ஏற்பட்டுள்ள காலம் இக் காலம். இவற்றையெல்லாம் தகுந்த முறையில் கையாண்டு ஏற்ற முயற்சிகளை நாம் செய்து வரு வதை நீங்களும் மனப்பூர்வமாக உணர்ந்திருக்கிறிர்க ளென்பது இன்று இப்பெருங் கூட்டமாய் நீங்கள் சமுகமளித்திருப்பதிலிருந்து தெரிகிறது. அதனுல் நாங்கள் மிகுந்த ஊக்கமடைகிருேம்.

பூரீமதி சிவசுப்பிரமணியமவர்களே, நீங்கள் எங்க ளுடைய வேண்டுகோளை ஏற்று நம் மாணவர்க்குப் பரிசில்களே வழங்க ஒருப்பட்டமைக்காக நாம் பெரி தும் கடமைப்பட்டுள்ளோம். கடமை தவருத நமது சிறந்த பழைய மாணவர் ஒருவர்க்குக் கடமையில் மாருத பத்தினியாய் விளங்கும் தங்களுக்கும் நமது கலாசாலை என்ற சமூகத்தில் உயர்ந்த ஸ்தானம் உண்டு. எங்கள் மத்தியிலே தாங்களும் இன்று வீற் றிருப்பது நமக்கெல்லாம் அளவு கடகத மகிழ்ச்சியூட் டுவதாகும். இன்னும் சிறப்பாக தங்கள் கையினுல் பரிசிலைப் பெறப்போகும் மாணவர்களுக்குள் ள மகிழ்ச் சியை அளவிட்டுக் கூறமுடியாது.
இன்னும் இரண்டாண்டுக் காலத்தினுள் இக்கலா சாலே ஒரு நூற்றண் டின் முக்காற்பகுதி வாழ்வை எட்டிவிடும். பாடசாலைகள் தேசியமயமாகிவரும் இக் காலத்திலே பாரம்பரிய முறைபற்றிப் பேசுவதே அநாகரிமாகத் தோன்றலாம். ஆணுல் மாணவனுக வும் ஆசிரியகைவும் இக்கலாசாலையுடன் நான் 46 ஆண்டுகளாகக் கொண்டிருக்கும் தொடர்பினைப்பற் றிச் சிங்திக்குங்கால் இக்கலைக்கூடத்தினு லாரம்பித்து

நம்முடைய சமுதாயத்தில் பல அரிய பெறுபேறுக 8ளத் தோற்றுவித்துள்ளன என்றே கருதுகிறேன். இந்த மாபெரும் கலைக்கூடத்தை ஆரம்பித்து வைத்த வர்கள், இதற்காக அரிய சேவை புரிந்தவர்கள், இங்கே கலே பயின்றவர்கள், இன்னும் தமதுள்ளத்தில் பல வழியாலும் இதன் நன்மையையே கருதிவந்த அபி மானிகள் முதலிய பலரும் தெய்வத்தின் பெயரால் மேற்சொன்ன அரிய சேவைகளே ச் செய்தவராவர்.

றைப் படிப்பதுபோலவே தோன்றும். தன்னுடைய சாதனைகளேயே சிறப்பித்துப் பிறமதங்களேத் தாக்கிக் கண்டித்து அவற்றுகெதிராகப் புனிதப்போர் தொடுத்த செய்திகள் இதிலே எள் ளளவும் இல்லை. உண்மை யிலே, நமது தலைமையாசிரியர்களுள் ஒரு பெரியாரா யிருந்த திரு. கெவின்ஸ் செல்வத்துரை அவர்கள் ஒரு மெய்க்கிறிஸ்தவராயிருந்தும் அவர்களுடைய முப்பது வருடச் சேவைக் காலத்திலே இவ்விங்துக்கல்லூரி அடைந்த வளர்ச்சி சொல்லுங்தர மன்று, எங்கள் கலா சாலையின் சைவ இளைஞர் சங்கத்தை ஆரம்பித்து வைத் தவரே அக்கிறிஸ்தவத் தலைமையாசிரியர்தான் என்று நான் கூறினுல் நீங்கள் ஆச்சரியப்படவேண்டியதில்லை.
நமது நாட்டிலே ஒருவரை யொருவர் மதிக்கும் பண்பு குறைந்து வருகிறது. சிங்கள மக்கள் தமிழ் மக்கள், பெளத்தர்கள் கத்தோலிக்க மதத்தினர் என்று நம்மிடையே துவேஷ மனப்பான்மை தலை காட்டப் பார்க்கிறது. தென்கிழக்காசியாவிலே பல பல தேசங்களில் இந்த நிலை மிக மோசமான நிலையில் இருக்கிறது. ‘ஒருவருடைய மதமே உண்மையான மதம்; கடவுள் ஒரு கூட்டத்தாருக்கு மட்டுமே உரி மையானவர் என்ற மூடத்தனமான கொள்கையினுல் இத்தகைய சமயப் பூசல்கள், சுவாமி விவேகானந்த ருடைய நூற்றண்டான இங்த ஆண்டில், நிகழ்கின்ற னவே என்பதை எண்ணும்போதுதான் துக்கமாயிருக் கிறது. 'புறச்சமயங்களைத் தூ வழியாது அவற்றின் கோட்பாடுகளையெல்லாம் தாங்கிச் சகித்துக்கொள்ள க் கூடியது இந்துசமயம். மனித சமுதாயத்தையும், அத னிடத்திலே உண்மையான தெய்வீக இயல்பை விருத்தி செய்வதைத் தமது வாழ்வின் குறிக்கோளாகக் கொண்டு, தமது ஆற்றலைப் பயன்படுத்தும் ஒவ்வொ ருவரிடத்திலும் உள்ள தெய்வத் தன்மையை மதித் துப் போற்றுவது இந்து சமயம்’ என்று இந்து சமயத் தைப்பற்றிச் சுவாமி சொல்லியவற்றைச் சிந்திக்கும் போது மனத்துக் காறுத லளிக்கின்ற தன்றே.

இத்தகைய வீரர்கள் மறைந்துவிட்டபோதிலும் அவர்கள் நமக்கு அரிய அறிவுச்செல்வத்தை விட்டுச் சென்றுள் ளனர். நமது எதிர்காலமும் இன்று நம் மிடையேயுள்ள கர்ம வீரர்கள் கையிலேயே தங்கி யுள் ளது. அச்சம் அமைதியின் மை யென்பவற்றல் கலங்கி நிற்கும் இக்காலத்திலும் நமது முன்னுேர்கள் காட்டிய பாதையிலே நாமும் நமது மாணவர்களை வழிநடத்தி உலகிலே யாவரிடத்திலும் அன்பாயிருக்கப் பழக்கி வருகின்றேமென்பதில் நமக்கு ஓரளவுக்குத் திருப்தி யுண்டாகிறது. ஆனல் விஞ்ஞானம் தொழில்நுட்பம் என்பவற்றினேயே பிரதானமாகக் கருதும் இன்றைய உலகிலே விஞ்ஞானத்துடன் ஒழுக்கநெறி முறைகளை யும் கலந்து பயின்ற புதிய சமுதாயமொன்றுதான் உருவாகவேண்டியுள்ளது, விஞ்ஞான அறிவுடன் மனிதப் பண்பாடும் இணைந்து கின் ருலொழிய மனி தன் இன்று முன்னேற்றமடைய முடியாது. 1817-ம் நூற்றண்டிலே பாராளுமன்ற அங்கத்தவர்கள் உரை நிகழ்த்தும்போது விவிலிய வேதத்திலிருந்து மேற் கோள்களை எடுத்துக்காட்டினுர்கள்; 18-ம் 19-ம் நூற் ருண்டுகளில் பண்டைய இலக்கியங்களிலிருந்து மேற் கோள்களை எடுத்தாண்டனர். ஆல்ை 20-ம் நூற் ருண்டிலோ மேற்கோள்களை எடுத்துக்காட்டும் வழக் கமே அற்றுப்போய்விட்டது' என ஆங்கிலச் சரித் திரநூல் வல்லோனுகிய திரவெல்லியன் (Trevely an) கூறுகிறன் எனவே விஞ்ஞானக் கல்வியைப் பூரணமாக்கவும் அதனைத் திருத்தமாக்கவும் நமக்கு இன்றியமையாதது சமயக்கல்வியே. புதிய விஞ்ஞான மனப்பான்மையைப் பழைய சணுதனமான பழக்க வழக் கங்களோடு இணே யச் செய்யும் கஷ்டமான பணியை காங்கள் ஆற்றவேண்டியவர்க ளா யிருக் கி ன் ருேம். ஆணுல் இக்கால விஞ்ஞானக் கல்வியின் பெறுபேறு கள் நமது சமயக் கோட்பாடுகளுக்கு முரணுனவை யல்லவாதலால் அப்பணியை ஆற்றுவதும் நமக்கு

கல்வியின் பயன் மாணவன் பல துறைகளிலும் சமமான முன்னேற்றமடைதலே என இக்காலத்திற் பொதுவாகக் கூறப்படுகின்றது. அதனை நமது பழைய மாணவர் சங்கமும் நாமும் ஆரம்பித்து நடத்தி வரும் கட்டிட வேலைகள்ளின் தன்மையை ஊன்றியவதா னிக்குமொருவர் நன்குணரமுடியும். ஒரு மாணவனு டைய சூழல் மூன்று விதமாக அமைந்திருக்கவேண்டு மென்று கூறப்படுகிறது. மனிதனுடைய உலோகா யத வளர்ச்சிக்கு விஞ்ஞானக் கல்வியும், கலாசார வளர்ச்சிக்குக் கலைக் கல்வியும், ஆத்மீக வளர்ச் சிக்கு சமயக்கல்வியும் ஆகிய மூன்றும் சேர்ந்துதான் மனிதனைப் பூரணமடையச் செய்கின்றன. வைத்தி யர்களையும், பொறியியல் வல்லுகரையும் தொழில் நுட்ப அறிஞர்களையும் உருவாக்கவேண்டிய நிர்ப்பங் தம் எமது கலாசாலையைப்போன்ற பெரிய கலாசாலை களுக்கு ஏற்பட்டிருப்பதனுல் மேற்சொன்ன கல்விப் பய2ணப்பற்றி அவசியம் சிந்திக்கவேண்டியிருக்கிறது. சர்வகலாசாலேயில் இடவசதிக்காக ஏற்பட்டுள்ள போட்டியின் காரணமாகப் பள்ளிக்கூடங்களிலே பாடங் களே அவசரப்பட்டுத் தரம் பிரிக்கவேண்டி யிருக்கிறது. நமது கட்டிட முயற்சிகளில் இந்த மூன்று நிலைகளுக் கும் வசதியளித்துள்ளோம். கல்லூரி வீ தி யி ல் அமைந்துள்ள நமது பாடசாலைச் சுற்றுப்புறத்திலே மூன்றடுக்கு மாடி வீடாக ஒரு விஞ்ஞான கூடமும், ஒழுக்க நெறிக்குரிய கலாசாரக் கல்விக்கு நமது சதுக்கத்திலமைந்த பண்டைய கட்டிடமும், ஆத்மீக வளர்ச்சிக்கு ஏற்றதாக கோவிலும் மகாமண்டபமும் கட்ட ஏற்பாடாகின்றது. மற்றும் விளையாட்டு மைதானத்துக்கயலிலுள்ள இரண்டொரு நிலங்களே யும் வாங்கிச் சேர்த்து அதனே ப் பெரியதாக்கி, பாட சாலைகளின் விதிகளுக்கமைந்த கூட்டு விளையாட்டுக்க 2ளப் பயில்வதற்கு ஏற்ற வசதிகளைத் தேடவும் முயற் சிகள் நடைபெறுகின்றன, காட்டிலேயே மிகப்பெரிய மண்டபம் என யாவராலும் ஒப்புக்கொள்ளப்பட்ட இக்

குமாரசாமி மண்டபத்திற்கு வேண்டிய தளபாட உப கரண வசதிகள் யாவும் அமைந்துவிட்டால் நமது கலாசாலையிலுள்ள பல பிரிவுகளும் இணைந்து நடத்தும் கூட்டான முயற்சிகள் பலவற்றுக்கும், கலாசார நிகழ்ச்சிகளுக்கும் ஏற்றதொரு இடமாயமைந்துவிடும். ஐந்து லட்சம் ரூபா செலவிட்டுத்தான் இந்த வேலை யைப் பூர்த்தி செய்துகொள்ள வேண்டியிருக்கிறது.
நமது கலாசாலையும் இப்பொழுது அரசாங்க உடைமையாகிவிட்டதஞல் நிகழவிருக்கும் மாற்றங் களைப்பற்றியெண்ணும்போது இன் னதுதான் நிச்சய மாக நடக்கப்போகிறதென்ற ஒருதெளிவில்லாதநிலையும் ஐயப்பாடும் ஏற்பட்டிருக்கின்றன. கடைசித் தீர்ப்பு கூறுவது மட்டும்தான் அரசாங்கத்தின் கையிலுள்ள தென்று கூறிவிடமுடியாது. அதுவே காரியங்களே ஆரம்பித்து வைக்கவேண்டிய பொறுப்பையும் ஏற் றிருக்கின்றது. தேசியக் கல்வித் திட்டம் ஒரு புதிய ஒழுங்கை வகுத்து எட்டாம் வகுப்பளவில் கொண்டு வந்து நடுத்தரக் கல்வியைப் பிரித்து அப்பால் மான வர்கள் எடுக்கும் பாடவகைகளுக்கேற்ற உயர்தரக் கல்வியைப் போதிக்கும் தனித்தனி பாடசாலைகளே உரு வாக்கப்போவதாகப் பயமுறுத்துகின்றது. இப்படித் துண்டிக்கப் பட்ட ஒரு நடுத்தரக் கல்வியிலே மாணவ ரின் பண்பாடு சிறப்படைய வழியேயிருக்காதுஎன நாம் அஞ்சுகிருேம், அதுவுமன்றி பலவகையான விருத்திக ளும், பரீகூடிார்த்த முறைகளும் கையாளப்படும் ஒரு நேரத்திலே வழக்கம்போல எல்லாருக்கும் பொதுவான போதனைகளை அளிக்கும் கல்வி நிலையங்கள் ஒரு சில வேனும் நிலவ அநுமதிக்கவேண்டிய தவசியமாகும். கல்வியில் முன்னேறுவதை மண் புழு முன்னேறிச் செல்லும் முறைக்கு ஒப்பிடுகிறர்கள். அது தன் தலை யைத் தான் முன்னே நீட்டுகிறது. அங்குமிங்கும் நெளிந்து வளைந்து தன் தலையை நிலையாக வைத்துக் கொள்ள ஒரு இடத்தை முதலில் தேடிக்கொண்ட பின்னரே சிறிது சிறிதாகத் தன்னுடலே இழுத்துக்

கொள்கிறது. எனவே, மண் புழு தன் தலையை நிலைப் படுத்திக்கொள்ள நாம் வசதியளிக்கவேண்டும், பூரண மா ன ஒரு மாணவனின் கல்வி விருத்திக்குத்தான் அர சாங்கம திட்டம் வகுக்கிறது. அத்திட்டம் செயல்படு வதற்கு வேண்டிய வசதிகளே நாங்கள் செய்து கொடுக்கவேண்டி யிருக்கிறது. அதற்குத் தேசீயக் கல்வி ஸ்தாபனமாய் விளக்கும் நமது கலாசாலை போன்ற ஒன்றை அது எங்த இலட்சியத்துக்காக ஆரம்பிக்கப்பட்டதோ அந்த இலட்சியத்துடனேயே இயங்கும்படி விடுவதும் ஒரு வழியாகும்.
ஆயிரமாயிரம் மாணவர்களை ஆய் கூடங்களென்ற சிறப்புப் பெயரால் வளங்கும் எந்திர சாலையுள் நாள் தோறும் தள்ளி நெருக்கி வைக்கும் காட்சியைக் காண மன உளைச் சலேயேற்படுகிறது. கடந்த இருபது ஆண்டுக் காலததிலே பல்கலைக்கழகப் புகுமுக வகுப் புப் பரீகூைடிகளில் நமது கலாசாலை மாணவர் தொடர் பாகச் சிறந்த சித்தியெய்தி வங்துள்ளனரா கையால் நமது விஞ்ஞானப் பகுதி அபரிமிதமான வளர்ச்சி யடைந்துள்ளது. இலங்கைப் பல்கலைக் கழகத்திலும் ஏற்பட்டுள்ள இடநெருக்கடியைத் தவிர்ப்பதற்காக நமது நடுத்தரப் பாடசாலைகளில் ஒன்றைச் சர்வகலா சாலையின் அந்தஸ்துக்கு உயர்த்தவும் யோசிக்கிறர் கள் . யாவரும் கண்டு வியக்கும கல்விச் சிறப்பினை யும் விளையாட்டுச் சிறப்புக்களையும் பெற்றுள்ள நமது யாழ்ப்பாண இந்துக்கல்லூரிக்கும் அத்தகைய உரிமை உண்டென்பதை மறுக்க முடியாதென்றே நாம கருது கிருேம். எனவே விஞ்ஞானக் கலைவளர்ச்சிக்குரிய வழிகளுக்கு வேண்டிய கட்டட விருத்திகளே நாம் கால தாமதமின்றி மேற்கொள்வது புத்தியாகும். தனது பாடசாலைகளனைத்தையுமே பராமரித்து, இதுவரை கவனிப்புக் குறைந்திருந்த பகுதிகளுக்கும சமசங் தர்ப்பமளிக்கவேண்டிய அரசாங்கமோ, அல்லது அடிக்கடி பொருளுதவி செய்துவங் த பொதுமக்களோ இப்பெரும்பணியைத் தனியே செய்துமுடிக்க இய

லாது. எனவே தேசீய மனப்பான்மையுடன் அரசிய லதிகாரிகளும், பெற்றேர்களும், பழைய மாணவர்க ளும், இன்னும தாமாக முன்வரும் தர்ம ஸ்தாபனங்க ளும், பொதுமக்களுமாகிய பலதிறத்தவரும் முன்வந்து இயன்றளவு பொருளுதவி புரிந்தால்தான் நாம் இப் பொழுது ஆரம்பித்துள்ளது போன்ற அவசியமான பணிகளைப் பூர்த்தி செய்துகொள்ள முடியும்.
இதுவரையில் நமது நோக்கங்களைச் சொல்லிவந்த நான் இனி இந்த ஆண்டில் நாம் சாதித்த சாதனைகள்பற் றியும் கூற எண்ணுகிறேன்
தாங்கள் எங்கள் கலாசாலையில் ஆரம்ப வகுப்புக ளில் 77 மாணவரும், நடுத்தர வகுப்புகளில் 543 மாண வரும் உயர்தர வகுப்புகளில் 821 மாணவருமாக மொத் தம் 1441 மாணவருளர். ஆரம்ப வகுப்புகளான 4-ம் 5-ம் வகுப்புகள் நமது பாடசாலேத் திட்டங்களோடு இதுவரை இழுபட்டு வந்தனவெனினும் இப்பொழுதுள்ள 5-ம் வகுப் பையும் நாம் நீக்கிவிட எண்ணியிருப்பதனுல் அடுத்த ஆண்டிலிருந்து நமது கலாசாலை ஓர் உயர்தர பாடசாலை யாக விளங்கும்.
கட்டிடங்களும் உபகரணங்களும் சதுக்க முன்றி லின் வடபாரிசத்தில் புதிதாயெழுந்துள்ள புதிய கட்டிடம் இருந்தும் நமது மாணவர் படிக்க வகுப்பறைகள் போதாக் குறை இன்றுமிருந்து வருகிறது. கிழக்குக் கரையிலே ரூபா 30000 செலவில் புதிதாயெழும்பும் இரண்டுமாடிக் கட்டிடம் கிர்வாக அலுவலகமாக நம் பாடசாலையின் பல பாகங்களையும் கண்காணிக்கத்தகுந்த ஒரு கேந்திர ஸ்தா னத்திலமைக்கப்படுகிறது; அக்கட்டிடத்தில் ஆசிரியர்கள் சிரமபரிகாரம் செய்வதற்கு வசதியான சகல செளகரியங் களும் கொண்ட அறைகளும் கிர்மாணிக்கப்படுகின்றன. இப்புதிய கட்டிடத்துக்கு நம் காரியாலயம் மாற்றப்பட்டதும் இப்பொழுது பிரதான வாயிலாயிருப்பது மூடப்பட்டுவிடும். கல்லூரி வீதியிலமைந்துள்ள வாயிலே அதன்பின்னர் பிரதான வாயிலாகும். ஜூபிலி மண்டபத்துக்கான சுகா

தார் வசதிகள் தண்ணீர் வசதி என்பன செய்ததும், வடக் கெல்லேயிலே பிரதான வீதி வரையில் கால் வாயொன் றமைத்ததும், கோயிலைப் புBருத்தாரணம் செய்ததும், விளையாட்டு மைதானத்திலே பார்வை மண்டபம் (Pavilion) அமைத்ததும் இவ்வாண்டின் நாம் செய்துகொண்ட கட் டிடவேலைகளாகும். இத்தகைய கட்டிடச் சிறப்புகளுக் கெல்லாம் காரணமாயிருந்தது பெற்றோரில் பெரும்பகுதி யினர் ஒழுங்காக அளித்து வந்த வசதி சேவைப்பண உதவியேயாகும். இந்த இடத்தில் திரு S. பொன்னம் பலமவர்களுக்கு நான் நன்றிகூறவேண்டும், இந்த வேலே களையைல்லாம் ஒழுங்காகக் கண்காணித்து செலவைச் சுருக்கி வீண் காலதாமதமில்லாமல் திட்டமிட்டபடி வேலே களை முடிக்க அவரே காரணமாயிருந்தார்.
உபகரண வகையில் விஞ்ஞான பாடத்துக்கேற்ற உபகரணங்கள் ரூபா. 9500 செலவில் தருவிக்கப்பட் டன. ரூபா 9000 பெறுமதியான வகுப்பறைத் தளபா டங்களையும் அரசாங்கம் காலந்தாழ்த்தாது உதவி செய் தது. பாடசாலைகளை அரசாங்கம் எடுப்பதனுல் அநர்த் தமே விளையுமெனக் கூறியவர்களின் வாக்கு ஒருபோதும் பலியாது என்பதை இது எடுத்துக் காட்டுகிறது.
நிர்வாகம்: நாளாங்கம் வளர்ந்து வரும் பாடசாலை கிர் வாக வேலேகளும் காரியாலயத்து வே லே க ளு ம் திரு. ஒன்றே பாடசாலையின் அபிவிருத்திக்கு இன்றியமை யாததாகும். அக்காரியாலயமும் அங்கு வேலை செய்பவர் களும் கல்வியைப் பயிற்றும் பாடசாலைகளுக்காகவே இயங்குகின்றனர்.
ஆசியர்களிடடிரற்றங்கள்: இவ்வாண்டின் முக்கிய நிகழ்ச்சியாகக் குறிக்கப்பட வேண்டியது திரு K. S. சுப் பிரமணியம் அவர்கள் ஆசிரியப் பதவியிலிருந்து இளைப் பாறிய ஒரு நிகழ்ச்சியேயாகும். கிருஷ்ணு சிரமத்தைச் சேர்ந்த சுவாமி ரங்கநாதானந்த *சுவாமி விவேகானந்த விஜயம்’ என்னும பொருள்பற்றி அன்று கூடியிருந்த பெருந்திரளான மக்களின் உள்ள மெல்லாம் களிப்பெய்தும வகையில் பிரசங்கமாரி பொழிந் தார்; இன்னும் சிரேஷ்ட வகுப்பு மாணவர் நால்வர் கிளி நொச்சியில் நடந்த சிரமதான இயக்கத்தில் பங்குபற்றி அதனைத் தொடக்கி வைத்தவர்களுடைய பாராட்டுதலேயும் பெற்றனர், கொழும்பு விவேகானந்த சபையினரால் நடத் தப்படும் சமயபாடப் பரீட்சைக்கு 67 மாணவரை யாம் அனுப்பினுேம். அவர்களுள் 46 பேர் சித்தியெய்தினர் கள்; அவர்களுள் இருவர் A. பிரிவில் சித்தியடைந்தனர். இந்துவாலிபர் சங்கத்திற்குக் கடந்த ஆண்டிலே பொறுப் பாசிரியராயிருந்த திரு. சங்கங்கள்: நமது கல்லூரியின் சங்கங்கள், கழகங்கள் முன்னையாண்டுகளில் நடந்தது போலவே தொடர்ந்தும் பணியாற்றிவருகின்றன், உயர்தர வகுப்பு விஞ்ஞானக் கழகம் இவ்வாண்டில் இரண்டுமுறையாகப் பொருட்காட்சி யும் அளவளாவற்கூட்டமும் நடத்தியது. சரித்திர குடி யியற் சங்கம், புவியியற்கழகம், தமிழ்ப்பேரவை, படக் காட்சிக்கழகம், தோட்டக்கழகம் முதலியயாவும் வழக்கம் போலத் திறமையான சேவை செய்து வருகின்றன. பிரித்தானிய தூதராலயம், அமெரிக்க துTதராலயம் செக்கோ சிலோவேக்கியதுரதராலயம் என்பன நமக்கு அரிய படக்காட்சிகளைக்காட்ட உதவி செய்தமைக்காக நாம் அவர் களுக்கு நன்றிகூற வேண்டும். இவ்விதமான பல முயற்சி கள் நம் மாணவரின் பாடசாலை வாழ்வைப் பயனுடைய தாக்கி, எதற்கும் துணிந்து முன்னிற்கும் ஆற்றலை அவர் களிடம் வளர்த்து வருகிறது.

முதலிடம் கிடைத்தது. அதற்குப்பரிசாக நவாலியூர் சோமசுந்தரப்புலவர் கேடயம் நமது கல்லூரிக்கே வழங் கப்பட்டது. சங்கீதப்போட்டியில் தனி மாணவரில் மேற் பிரிவில் செல்வன் S. ராகவனும், கீழ்ப்பிரிவில் செல்வன் N ரவீந்திரனும் தனித்தனியே முதலிடத்தைப் பெற்றனர். ஆங்கிலப்பேச்சுப் போட்டியிலும் செல்வன் S ராகவன் இரண்டாமிடத்தைப் பெற்ருரன். நமது கல்லூரியிலிருந்து வெளிவரும் 'இந்து இளைஞன்' என்ற சஞ்சிகை தனது வெள்ளி விழாவைக் கொண்டாடிப் பலராலும் புகழப் பெற்ற சிறப்புமலரொன்றையும் வெளியிட்டது. ஆசிரியர் திரு. W. மகாதேவன் அவர்களையும் அவருக்கு அநுசரணை யாயிருந்த மாணவப் பத்திரா திடர்களையும 5ாம் பாராட்ட வேண்டும்
நூல் நிலையம்; நமது நூல்கிலேயத்தைப் போதியளவு பெரிதாக்கவேண்டிய அவசியத்தை நாமுணர்கின்றுேமாயி னும் இவ்வாண்டில் நாம் மேற்கொண்டிருந்த கட்டிட வேலைகள் காரணமாக அதனைச் செய்ய முடியாமற் போய் விட்டது. ஆனல் இந்திய சரித்திரம் கலை கலாசாரம் கட்டிடக்கலை முதலிய பல விஷயங்களைக் தெரிவிக்கும் அரிய பல நூல்களை இக்தியத்தூதராலயம் நமக்கு அன் புடன் அளித்துள்ளது. இந்திய அரசாங்கத்துக்கு நாம் பெரிதும் கடப்பாடுடையோம் இந்நூல்களே நமக்கு நேரில் கொண்டுவந்து கொடுத்த இரண்டாவது காரியதரிசியான பூரீ P. R S. மணியவர்களின் பெருந்தகைமையை வாழ்த்து கிருேம். இன்னும் ஆங்கிலத்தை இரண்டாவது மொழி யாகக் கற்பித்தல் என்ற பொருள்பற்றிய நூல்களை நமக் களித்த பிரித்தானியத் தூதுவர்க்கும் நமது நன்றியுரிய தாகும், நமது நூல் நிலையத்துக்கு அண்மையிலே மேலும் பல நூல்களைத் திரு. W.B. பாக்கியநாதன் அவர்கள் அனுப்பி யுள்ளார்கள். நமது பழைய மாணவருள் ஒருவரான இவர் இப்பொழுது அமெரிக்காவிலே கலிபோணியாவில் நூல் நிலைய கிர்வாகப் பயிற்சி பெற்று வருகிருரர். தமது பழைய கலாசாலைக்கு அன்பளிப்பாக ச் சிறந்த நூல்களை யனுப்பி வைத்த அவர்க்கு நாம் நன்றி கூறுகிறுேம, -

விடுதிச்சாலை: நமது விடுதிச் சாலையில் சேர்வதற்கு வழக்கம்போலவே அநேகர் அநுமதி கோரினர். அவர்க ளிற் பலரை நாம நெடுநாட்களுக்குக் காத்திருக்கச் செய்ய வேண்டிய நிர்ப்பக்கமும் ஏற்பட்டது. மாணவத் தலைவர் களைக்கொண்ட நிர்வாக முறை நல்ல பலனளிக் து வருகி றது. திரு. K. S சுப்பிரமணியமவர்களுக்கும் அவருடைய உதவியாளர் திரு K நமசிவாயமவர்களுக்கும் அநுசர ணேயாக நமது ஆசிரியருள் ஒருவரான திரு. A. பொன் னமபலமவர்கள் விடுதிச்சாலேயிலே தங்கியிருக்கிருரர். இங் தக் காலத்திலே விடுதிச் சாலேயின் நடைமுறைகளை நேரில் பார்வையிடும் சந்தர்ப்பங்கள் பல எனக்குக் கிடைத்தன. அங்கே மாணவர் கூட்டுவாழ்வின் பலனை நன்கறுபவித்து வருதல் கண்டு மகிழ்கின்றேன். உயர்தர வகுப்பைச் சேர்ந்த விடுதி மாணவர் தமது வருடாந்த விருந்தைச் சிறப்பாக நடத்தி வருகிருரர்கள். நமது பழைய மாணவரு ளொருவரான Dr. 0, மயில் வாகனமவர்கள் பிரதம விருந் தினராகக் கலந்துகொண்டு அவ்விருக்தைச் சிறப்பித் தார்கள்.
விளையாட்டுக்கள்; இவ்விஷயமாக எடுத்துக் கூறக் கூடிய வெற்றிகளெதுவும் இந்த ஆண்டில் நாம் பெற முடியவில்லே. 'இல்லங்களுக்கிடையே நடைபெறும் விளை யாட்டு முறைகள் திருப்தியான முறையிலே நடைபெற்று வருகின்றன. இத் துறையிலே இன்னும கூடிய கவன மும் முயற்சியும் செலுத்தக்கூடிய வகையில் திரு. டப் போட்டியில் கீழ்ப்பிரிவுப் போட்டியில் செல்வத்துர்ை இல்லத்துக்கோஷ்டி வெற்றிபெற்றது. மேற்பிரிவில் நாக லிங்கம இல்லமும், சபாபதி இல்லமும் முதலிடத்துக்கு வெற்றி கோல்வியின்றி நின்றனர்.
கிரிக்கெட் நமது வழக்கமான உயர்நிலையை நாம் எய்த முடியவில்லை. நமது மேற்பிரிவுக்கோஷ்டி ஏழு ஆட் டங்களில் பங்குபற்றியது. இரண்டில் வெற்றி பெற்றேரம்; ஒன்றில் வெற்றி தோல்வியில்லை; நான்கு ஆட்டங்களை இழந்துவிட்டோம். கீழ்ப்பிரிவுக்கோஷ்டி வெற்றிப்போட் டியில் பங்குபற்றும் வாய்ப்பிருந்தும் ஈற்றில் மகாஜனுக் கல்லூரியுடனடிய ஆட்டத்தில் தோற்றுவிட்டது.
உடற்பயிற்சிப் போட்டிகள்: வடமாகாண உடற்பயிற் சிப்போட்டிகளில் முதன்முறையாகப் பங்குபற்றி மேற் பிரிவு மத்தியபிரிவாகிய இரண்டு பிரிவுகளிலும் முகலிடத் தைப் பெற்ருேரம. நமது மத்தியபிரிவு வீரரே 16 வயதுக் குட்பட்ட விரர் கூட்டங்களனைத்திலும் சிறந்தவரென்ற புகழையுமீட்டிக்கொண்டனர்.

A விளையாட்டுப் போட்டிகளில் இவ்வாண் டின் தொடரோட்டப் போட்டியிலே டயன வெற்றிக்கிண் ணத்தை 6ம் கல்லூரியே பெற்றது. மத்திய பிரிவுத் தொடரோட்ட வீரர் புதியதொரு சாதனையை கிலே நாட்டி வைத்தனர். செல்வன் S, ராமச்சந்திரன் மத்திய பிரிவுத் தனிவீரனுகத் தெரிவுசெய்யப்பெற்ருரர். இவ்வாண்டில் நிகழ்ந்த நமது இல்லங்களுக்கிடையிலான விளையாட்டுப் போட்டிகள் இந்துக்கல்லூரியின் பழைய மாணவரு ளொருவரும் மல்லாக நீதிபதியுமான திரு. V. M. குமார சுவாமியவர்களின் தலைமையிலே நடைபெற்றன. போட் டிகள் மிக உற்சாகமாக இருந்தன. நாகலிங்கம் இல் லத்தை மிக அரிதின் முயன்றே காசிப்பிள்ளே இல்லம் வெற்றியீட்டிக்கொண்டது.
இராணுவப் பயிற்சியாளர் லெப்டினட் S பரமேசுவ ரன் அவர்களுடைய தலைமையில் மேற்பிரிவு இராணுவப்

பயிற்சிக் குழுவும், திரு. S. சோமசுந்தானவர்கள் தலைமை யில் கீழ்ப்பிரிவுப் பயிற்சிக் குழுவும் வழக்கம்போலச் சிறப் புடன் விளங்குகின்றன வருடாந்தப் பயிற்சி முகாமுக் காக இவர்கள் தீயத்தளாவைக்குச் சென்று வந்தனர். இம்முறை சிரேட்ட இராணுவப் பயிற்சி உத்தியோகத்தர் அவர்களின் உடல் நலக் குறைவு காரணமாகத் திரு. P, ஏகாம்பரமவர்களே தீயத்தளாவைக்கு நமது வீரரை அழைத்துச் சென்றுவந்தார்.
சாரணர்: இந்த ஆண்டில் நமது சாரணர் படையி னர் மிகத் திறம்படச் செயலாற்றியுள்ளனர். சிறுதொழில் செய்து மற்றெவரும் என்றுமே சேர்த்திராத அளவு தொகையாக ரூபா 1076 சேர்த்து முதலிடம் பெற்றனர். 17 சாரணர்க்கு முதலாந்தரப் பட்டயங்கள் வழங்கப்பட் டன. முதலுதவிப் பயிற்சியை நமது சாரணருள் 30 பேர் பெற்றுக்கொண்டார்கள், சாரணச் சிறுவர் பெறக் கூடிய அதி உயர்ந்த பட்டயமான ராணிப் பட்டயத்தைப் பெறுங் தகுதியையும் 8 சாரணர் பெற்றிருக்கின்றனர் அநுராதபுரத்தில் நடைபெற்ற வெள்ளிவிழா ஜம்போ ரிக்கு யாழ்ப்பாணத்திலிருந்து சென்ற சாரணர் படைக் குள் மிகப் பெரிதாயிருந்தது நமது கல்லூரியின் சாரணப் படைதான். இவ்விதமான அரிய சாதனைகளைச் செய்யக் காரணகர்த்தர்களாயிருந்த பிரதம சாரணத் தலைவரான திரு. T. சிவராசா அவர்களையும், சாரணர்சங்கத் தலைவர் களான திரு. C. முத்துக்குமாரன், திரு. W. சிவசுப்பிர மணியம் என்பவர்களையும் சாரணச் சிறுவர் தலைவரான திரு. S. சிவநேசராசா அவர்களையும் நாம் பாராட்டுகின் ருேரம்,

ஐந்து பாடங்களில் சித்தியடைந்தவர்கள் 37 பேர். அவ் வாண்டு டிசம்பர் பரீட்சையில் 6ம் 6க்கு மேற்பட்ட பாடங் களில் சித்தியடைந்தோர் 32 பேராவர். ஐந்து பாடங்களில் சித்தியடைந்தோர் 40 பேர்,
இலங்கைச் சர்வகலாசாலை; ஆரம்பப் பரிசைஷ 1962. இப்பரிசைஷக்குத் தோற்றியவர்களில் கலேப்பிரிவில் 9 பேரும், மருத்துவப்பகுதிக்கு 4 பேரும், பல் வைத்தியப் பகுதிக்கு ஒருவரும், மிருக வைத்தியப்பகுதிக்கு ஒருவரும், உயிரியல் சாத்திரப்பகுதிக்கு ஒருவரும், விவசாயப் பகு திக்கு ஒருவரும், பொறியியல் துறைக்கு 6 பேரும் பெளதிக சாத்திரப் பிரிவுக்கு 12 பேருமாக 35 பேர் சர்வகலாசா லையில் சேர்ந்துகொள்ள அநுமதி பெற்றனர்.
நமது மாணவர்களுள் ஒருவரைப்பற்றிச் சிறப்பாக நாம் இங்கே குறிப்பிடவேண்டியதவசியம், செல்வன் 8, செல்வலிங்கம் என்பவர் புகுமுகவகுப்பில் காட்டிய அரிய சாதனையின் பெறுபேருக முதல் வருடப் பரியிைஷக்குக் தோற்றமல் நேரே இறுதிப் பகுதியின் முதல் பிரிவுப் பரி கைஷக்குத் தமது பெயரைப் பதிந்து கொள்ளும் அரிய வாய்ப்பைப் பெற்றுக்கொண்டார்.
இன்னும் நமது மாணவரெல்லாம் சர்வகலாசாலேயில் மிகத் திறமையாக இருக்கிருரர்கள் என்பதைக் குறித்துப் பெருமையடைகிருேரம், இவர்களுள் ஆறுபேர் இவ்வாண்டு B, Sc, பரிக்ஷையில் முதற் பிரிவிலே சித்தியடைந்துள்ள னர். திருவாளர்கள் S. கைலாசபிள்ஜள, N. நடராசபிள்ளே, K இர சாத்தினம், M. மகேசன், S. பொன்னம்பலபிள்ளே P. மதியாபரணம் ஆகிய அந்த ஆறுபேருக்கும் நமது வாழ்த்துக்கள் உரியதாகுக.

இலங்கை ரசாயன சங்கத்தினரால் 1962-ல் நடாத்தப் பெற்ற அகில இலங்கைப் பாடசாலைகளுக்கான கட்டுரைப் போட்டியில் முதற்பரிசைப் பெற்றிருக்கிருரர். கடந்த மூன்று ஆண்டுக் காலத்தில் இரண்டாம் முறையாகவும் நமது பாடசாலை முதற் பரிசைப் பெற்றுள்ளது.
பழைய மாணவர் சங்கம்: நமது கல்லூரியின் நலன் கருதி 15ாளுக்குநாள் பலம்பெற்று வளர்ந்துவருகிறது. இச்சங்கம் கல்லூரியின் அபிவிருத்தித் திட்டங்கள்பற்றி யாலோசிக்கவும் வேறும் சிறப்பான காரியங்களேக் கவ னிப்பதற்குமாக இச்சங்கத்தின் செயற்குழு ஒழுங்காகக் கூடிவந்திருக்கிறது. சிறிது காலமாகச் சோர்வடைக் திருந்த இச்சங்கத்தின் கொழும்புக்கிளை கடந்த ஆண்டில் புதிய ஊக்கம் பெற்றுச் செயலாற்றத் தொடங்கியுள்ளது. உயர்ந்த பதவி வகித்தாலென்ன, குறைந்த பதவி வகித்தா லென்ன நாட்டுக்கு உழைக்கும் நமது பழைய மாணவ ாணவர்க்கும் நம் வாழ்த்துக்கள் உரித்தாகுக. அவர்க ளைப்பற்றிய செய்திகளையும் அவர்களடைந்துவரும் பெரு மைகளேயும் எங்கள் கல்லூரியினின்று வெளிவரும் சஞ் சிகை அவ்வப்போது பிரசுரிக்கும். எங்கள் பழைய மாண வர்மூவர் மிகப்பெரிய பொறுப்பு வாய்ந்த பதவிகளுக்குயர்த் தப்பட்டிருக்கின்றனர். திருவாளர் M. பூரீ காந்தா காணி, நீர்பாய்சன, மின்சார அமைச்சின் கிரந்தரக் காரியதரிசி யாகவும், திருவாளர், S, கார்த்திகேசு பிரதம அளவை அதி காரியாகவும், திருவாளர் A. M. A. அசீஸ் பொது சன சேவைக் கமிஷனங்கத்தவராகவும் பதவியேற் றுள்ளனர். அவர்களே நாம் பாராட்டிக் கெளரவிக்கி ருேரம், அன்னர் மூவரும் தமது புதிய பதவிகளில் மேலும் மேலும் புகழடைய வேண்டுமென்று பிரார்த்திக்கிருேரம், இந்த இடத்தில் துக்ககரமான செய்தியும் ஒன்றைய குறிப் பிடவேண்டிய கிலேயிலிருக்கின்றேன். புகழ்மிக்க நம்

நன்றி. இந்த ஆண்டறிக்கையை முடிக்குமுன் முத லில் வடபெரும்பாக வித்தியாதிபதி திருவாளர் S, U. சோமசேகாமவர்களுக்கும் அவருடைய காரியாலயத் து உத்தியோகத்தர்களுக்கும் நன்றி கூறக் கடமைப்பட்டுள் ளேன். கல்லூரியின் நிர்வாகத்திலேற்பட்ட ஏராளமான பிரச்சினைகளைத் தீர்ப்பதில் அவர்கள் ஆற்றிய உதவிக் கும் கூறிய புத்திமதிகளுக்கும் நான் செய்யவல்ல கைம் மாறுதானென்ன? நாளாந்த நிர்வாகத்தில் எனது காரி யாலயத்தில் வேலைபார்ப்பவர்களனைவரும் காட்டிய ஒத் துழைப்பிற்கு அவர்களுக்கும் நான் நன்றிகூறக் கடமைப் பட்டுள்ளேன். எனது உதவி அதிபருக்கும் ஏனைய ஆசி ரியர்களுக்கும் ஆசிரியரல்லாத ஏனைய ஊழியர்களுக்கும் தம்மாலியன்ற அளவு உதவிசெய்து கல்லூரியின் வேலே களே ஒழுங்காகவும் மிகச் சிறந்த முறையிலும் நான் செய் வதற்கு அநுசரணையாயிருந்து வருபவர்களுக்கும் என் நன்றி உரியதாகுக. பரிசளிப்புக்குரிய நூல்களாதியன வற்றைப் பெற்றுக்கொள்வதற்கு வேண்டிய பணவுத வியை நாம் கேட்கமுன்பே கொடுத்துதவிய பழையமான வர்கள், அபிமானிகள், பெற்ருரர்களுக்கு எல்லாம் என்து நன்றியைத் தெரிவிக்கிறேன்.
