திரு. முத்துச்சாமிப்பிள்ளை தம்பதிகளுக்க காங்கள் சிறப்பாக நல்வரவு கூறுகின்ருேம். நீங்களிருவீ ம் இப் பாடசாலையுடன் கொண்டுள்ள அங்யோன்னியமான நீண்ட நெடும் பாந்தவ் வியத்தை அளவிட்டுக் கூறுவதரிதென்றலும் நாம் கூறும் இந்த வரவேற்பு அதனே எடுத்து விளக்கும் என்றே நம்புகிருேம்.
ஐய! சிறந்த ஒரு பழைய மாணவன் என்ற முறையில் மாத்திர மன்றி இக் கல்லூரியின் விதியை நிர்ணயித்து வழிநடத்துவதில் பெரும்பங்கு கொண்டுழைத்த ஒரு பெரியார் என்ற முறையிலே உங்களுக்கு நாம் நல்வரவு கூறுகின்றேம். இற்றைக்கு அரை நூற்றண்டுக் காலத்துக்கு முன்பிருந்தே இக் கல்லூரியில் ஒரு பாணவனுய், ஆசிரியனும், பழைய மாண வசங்கச் செயலாளனுய், அதிகாரசபைக் கமைந்த காரியதரிசியாய், ஈற்றில் இதற்கும் இதன் கிளைக் கல்லூரிகளுககும் முதல்வராகவே யிருந்த நீண்ட பல்வேறு துறைகளாயமைந்த தொடர்பு தங்களுக்குண்டு. என்றுமே நினைவை விட்டகலாத உயர்ந்த இத் தொடர்புபோன்ற ஒன்றைக்கொண்டு இத்துணை நீண்டகாலத்துக்கு அசையாத பக்தியுடன் தன் பழைய கல்லூரிக்குத் தொண்டாற்றம் பேறுபெற்ற பழைய மாணவரைக் காண்பதரிது. மனத்திட்பமும் கல்லூரியின் கன்மையொன்றே குறியாக் கொண்டு அதன் வளர்ச்சியிலே அயராதுழைக்கும பண் புங் கொண்ட ஒருவரைத் தன் பழைய மாணவனுகப் பெற்ற கல்லூரியைக் காண்பதும் அரிதே.
இவையெல்லாம் ஏதோ சக்தர்ப்ப மகிழ்ச்சியினுல் கூறும் புகழுரைகளல்ல என்பதை நமது கல்லூரி என்னவாகுமோ என்ற ஏக்கத்தைத்தந்த அந்த அரசாங்க உடைமையாகிய காலத்தை மறவாதவர்கள் நன்கறிவர், அந்தக் காலத்திலே, தாங்கள் ஐரோப்பிய

சுற்றுப் பிரயாணத்தை முடித்துக்கொண்டு வந்திருந்தபொழுது, பலாபலன்களை நேரிலாராய்ந்தறிந்து தங்கள் மதி நுட்பத்தினுலும் பெருந்தன் மையினுலும் அச்சமயம் ஏற்பட்டிருந்த அவலமான சூழ் நிலையினின்றும் இக்கல்லூரியினைக் காப்பாற்றி இன்று ஒர் அரசாங்க பாடசாலையாக மிளிரும்படி செய்து வைத்தீர்கள்.
யாழ்ப்பாண இந்துக்கல்லூரியின் போதனுமுறையிலமைந் திருந்த சமய கலாசார பாரம்பரியத்தை இந்த மற்றம் குறைவு படுத்தி விடப்போகிறதே யென்று குறை கூறுபவருமிருக்கக் கூடும் ஆனுல் பாடசாலைகளை அரசாங்கம் தல துடைமை யாக்கிக் கொண்ட பின் அத்தகையதொரு தாழ்வு மனப்பான்மை வெறும் பொய் யானது என்பதை அநுபவவாயிலாக காமின்று உணர்ந்துள்ளோம். அப்படித்தான் அது இருந்த எலும், சைவபரிபாலன சபைக்குத் தாங்கள் த?லமைதாங்கிவருவதும், அதனைக் செளரவப்படுத்தி மதுரையாதீனம் "சிவநெறிக் காவலர்' என்று தங்களுக்குச் சிறப் புப் பட்ட மீந்ததனுலும், நியாயசபையில் தங்களுக்கிருக்கும் பெரு மதிப்பினுலும், இந்து சமயத்தில் எது போற்றுதலுக் குரியதோ, சமூ கத்திலெது புனிதமானதோ அவை தங்களால் உயர்வடைவது கண்டு, நாஸ்திகம் அராசகம் என்ற தீயசக்திகள் அணுகாமற் காக்கலா மென்று நல்ல இந்து சமயத்தவர்களும் நியாயம், ஒழுங்கு என்ப வற்றைப் பேண விரும்புகிறவர்களும் நம்பிக்கையடைவர் என் பது திண்ணம். -

சென்ற பரிசளிப்பு விழாவின் பின்னர் இக்கல்லூரியில் நிகழ்ந்த பலவிதமான வேலைகள் சாதனைகள் பற்றி அறிக்கை சமர்ப்பிக்கப் பு கமுன் கடந்த ஜூன் மாதத்தில் இளைப்பாறிய எங்கள் முன்னேகா ளதிபர் திரு. சி. சபாரத்தினமவர்க ளா ற்றிய அரும் பெருஞ் சேவை களுக்காக அன்னுருக்கு எனது இதயபூர்வமான அஞ்சலியைக் கூற விழைகிறேன். இன்று இங்கே பிரசன்னமா யிருக்கும் பிரதம விருந் தின ரைப்போலவே திரு. சபாரத்தின மவர்களும் இக் கல்லூரியுடன் நீண்ட காலம் தொடர்புகொண்டவரா யிருக்கின்றர், ஒரு மாணவ னுக ஆரம்பித்து உதவியாசிரியர், உப அதிபர். அதிபர் என்று அத் தொடர்பினை இறுசப் பிணைத்து இக் கல்லூரியின் வளர்ச்சியினுலும், விருத்தியினுலும் ஈழத்திருநாட்டில் இணையற்ற பெரும் இந்துக் கலைக் கூடமாக இன்று விளங்கச் செய்ததில் அவரும் பெரும் பங்கு கொண் (BGIT GIT (Tř.
கடந்த பல வருடங்களாக யாழ்ப்பாண இந்துக்கல்லூரிக் கமைந்த அதிபர்கள் வரிசையை நோக்கும்போது கல்லூரி நல்ல பாக்கியம் செய்ததென்றே கூறவேண்டும். அவ்வதிபர்கள் ஒவ் வொருவரும் பல்வேறு துறைகளில் பிரவேசித்து வந்தனர். அந்தக் கூட்டத்தில் திரு. சபாரத்தின ம வர்கள் பொறுமையும், அயராத உழைப்பும், நுணுகி யாராயுந் திறமையுங் கொண்டு தம் கடமை யைத் திறம்பட ஆற்றித் தனக்கெனச் சிறந்ததோரிடத்தைப் பெற் றுத் தாரகைபோல் விளங்குகின் ருர், மற்றும் வைபவங்களிற் போல இன்றும் இந்த விழாவில் வந்து கலந்துகொண் டிருப்பது அவர் தமது பழைய கல்லூரியின் பெருமையிலும் அபிவிருத்தியிலுங்
கொண்டுள்ள குன்றுத ஊக்கத்துக்கோர் எடுத்துக்காட்டாகும். அவர்
இளைப்பாறிய சமயத்தில் கொழும்பிலும் இங்கும் அவருக்காக எடுக் கப்பட்ட மகத்தா ன பிரிவுபசார விழாக்களின் பின் இப்பொழுது நான் ஏதாவது கூறுவதானுல் அது அசந்தர்ப்பமாகப்படும். எனினும் சிறந்த ஓர் ஆசிரியராகவும் அதிபராயுமிருந்த திரு, சபாரத்தின மவர்களுக்கு ஒரு மாணவனுகவும் உடனுசிரியனுகவும் இருந்து என் அஞ்சலியைச் செலுத்தக்கூடிய பாக்கியத்தை எனக் களித்த இறை வனே மனமார இறைஞ்சுவதற்கு இச்சந்தர்ப்பத்தைப் பயன்படுததிக் கொள்ளுகிறேன். உண்மையில் இடைக்காலம் எனக் கருதவேண்

டிய இக்காலத்திலே இக்கல்லூரியின் நிர்வாகம் எதுவித குறைவு மின்றிச் சுமுகமாக இயங்கிவருகிறதென்றல் அது அவருடைய நிர்வாகத் திறமைக்குப் போதிய சான் ருகும்.
பாடசாலைகள் தேசீயமயமாகினுல் பெற்ருர், பழைய மாணவர், அபிமானிகள் என் றித்திறத்தோரின் தொடர்பு அற்றுவிடுமென்ற காரணமற்றதோர் அச்சம் பெரிதும் நிலவிவரும் இந்நாட்களில் பாடி சாலைச் சமூகம் பாடசாலையுடள் எவ்வளவு நெருங்கிய தொடர்பு கொண் டிருக்க முடியும் என்பதையும் அரசாங்கம் பாடசாலையின் பராமரிப்புக்கும் அபிவிருத்கிக்கும் செய்யும் பணியில் தாமும் எந் தெந்த வகையில் உதவிசெய்ய முடியும் என்பதற்கும் திரு. சபாரத் தின ம்வர்களின் இடையிடுபடாத அபிமானம் பெரியதோர் எடுத்துக் காட்டாய் விளங்ககின்றது . பாடசாலை ச் சமூகததுக்கும் அரசாங் கத்துக்கு மிடையில் இத்தகையதோ ரொருமைப்பாடு எத்துணைப் பயனளிக்க வல்லதென்பதைத் தெரிந்துகொள்வதற்கு இப்பொழுது பாடசாலையைச் சுற்றி நோக்கினுல் போதுமானது. பெருமைக் குரிய பழைய அதிபர்களுள் ஒருவருடைய பெயரைத் தாங்கி நிற்கும் இதோ, இந்த மண்டபமே சாட்சி ஆசிரியர்கள், பழைய மாணவர் கள், அதிகாரசபையினர், மாணவர்கள், அபிமானிகள், அரசாங்கக் கல்விப் பகுதியினர் என் றித்திறத்தார் பலருடைய சிறந்ததொரு கூட்டுமுயற்சியாக இது விளங்குகிறது. இன்னும் சொல்வதென் ரூல் இம் மண்டபத்தின் பெரும் பகுதி வேலையைப் பாடசாலைச் சமூகமே செய்திருக்க, ஈற்றில் குறைவேலைகளைப் பூர்த்திசெய்யும் பணியில் அரசாங்கமும் முன் வந்துள்ளது.
எவ்வாருயினும் இக்காட்டிலுள்ள சகல பாடசாலைகளும் இதே முறையில் இயங்கினுல்தான் தேசீய கல்வித் திட்டத்தின் லட்சிய நிலை யைக் காணலாமென்பது கருத்தன்று. இந்தக் கூட்டு முயற்சி முறையை அநுசரிப்பது சாத்தியமானுல் இனிமேல் நிலைமையை மாற்றிப் பெரும்பான்மையான வேலையை அரசாங்கம் ஏற்றுக் கொள்ள, பாடசாலைச் சமூகம் சிறுச்சிறு பணிகளைச் செய்வதா யிருக்கவேண்டும். அதாவது, பாடசாலைகள், தளபாடங்கள், ஆசிரி யர்கள் ஆதியாம் வசதிகளை அரசாங்கம் கொடுத்துதவி, பொது வான கொள்கைத் திட்டமொன்றையும் வகுத்துவிட, பாடசாலையின் பாரம்பரியத்துக்கும் சமூகத்தின் தேவைகளுக்கும் ஏற்ப அவற்றை ஏற்றுப் பயன்படுத்தப் பாடசாலைச் சமூகம் முன்வரவேண்டும், முப்பதாண்டுக் காலத்துக்கு மேலாக சர்வஜன வாக்குரிமையையும், ஏறக்குறைய இருபதாண்டுக் காலம் இலவசக் கல்விச் சலுகையையும்

அநுபவித்த ஒரு காட்டின் பாடசாலைச் சமூகங்களிடையே இதனை எதிர்பார்ப்பதில் தவறில்லையென்றே கருதுகிறேன்.
தம்மைச் சூழ்ந்துள்ள காட்டின் கிலேமையை நன்கறிந்து, நமது இளைஞர்களை எதிர் கோக்கியிருக்கும இடர்ப்பாடுகளை உண்மையாக உணர்ந்துள்ள பாடசாலைச் சமூகத்தைப் பார்த்து, இந்துக்கல்லூரியி லுள்ள எமக்குமாத்திரமன் றிக் கல்விப் போதனையுடன் தொடர்பு கொண்ட அனைவர்க்குமே மன உளைச்சலைத் தரும் ஒரு பிரச்சினைக்குத தீர்வுகாணவேண்டிய பணி உங்களுக்குண்டு என்று சுட்டிக் காட்ட விரும்புகின்றேன். மாணவர்களை இரண்டு பிரிவாகப் பிரித்துக் கலைப்பகுதியென்றும் விஞ்ஞ்சீனப்பகுதியென்றும் பாகுபாடு செய் வதணு லேற்படும் பிரச்சினை தான் அது.
கைத்தொழில் விருத்தியே தேசிய அபிவிருத்திகளுக் கெல்லாம் வழிகாட்டி வழிகூட்டி நிற்கும் இந்த யுகத்திலே விஞ்ஞானக்கல்வி தனக்கெனச் சிறப்பான ஓரிடததை வகுத்துக்கொண் டிருக்கிறது. இந் நிலையில் விஞ்ஞானப் பிரிவு மாணவர் என்ற பாகுபாடு ஆற்றல் வாய்ந்ததாகக் கருதப்படுவ தியற்கையே. கேம்பிரிட்ஜ் பிறின் ஸ்டன் போன்ற சர்வகலாசாலைகளில் ஆராய்ச்சித்துறையில ஈடுபடுத்தா விட்டாலும் அது மருத்துவத்துறையில் கோய் தீர்க்கும் தொழி லொன் றிலோ அல்லது பொறியியல் துறையில் ஆக்கமுயற்சியான தொழிலொன றிலோ அவா கள் ஈடுபட்டுழைக்க வாய்ப்பளிக்கிறது. ஆணுல பாடசாலையிலுள்ள கலைப்பிரிவின் கதி யென்ன? பொதுஜன சேவை முதலாங் துறைகள் யாவும் வேலையில்லாத் திண்டாட்டம் என் னும் தீராகோயினு லடைபட்டுக் கிடக்கும்போது கலைப்பிரிவு என்பது ஒருவகையிலும் பொருத்தமற்ற வீண் பிரிவாகிக் குறிக்கோளற்று ஸ்தம்பித்துத தேங்கிப் படிப்பவர்களுக்கும் படிப்பிப்பவர்களுக்கும் உள்ளச் சோர்வையல்லவா ஏற்படுததுவதா யிருக்கிறது.
நாள் தோறும் முன்னேறிவரும் உற்பத்தி வேலைகளுக்கு விஞ் ஞானமும் தொழில்நுட்ப அறிவும தேவைப்படுகின்ற இக்காலத்திலே விஞ்ஞானம் தொழிலறுட்பம் என்பவற்றில் பயற்சி பெறறவர் களுக்கே மதிப்பு ஏற்பட்டுவரும் இக்காலத்திலே - பொதுக்கல்வி யைப் பெற்றவர்களுக்கு உத்தியோகம் கிடைப்பதற் கரிதாயிருக்கும் இக்காலத்திலே - சமூகச் செழிப்பை இல்லாமற் செய்வது மாத்திர மன்றி இளம் உள்ளங்களில் விரக்தி யை, வெறுப்பை, அவ நம்பிக் கையை ஏற்படுத்தும் இத்தகைய பிரிவு ஒன்றைப் பிரித்து வைப் பது அறிவீனமும் கண்மூடித்தனமுமானது; கொடிய குற்றமானது

தற்கால வாழ்க்கை முறையிலுள்ள மயக்கமான நிலையிலே எதிலும் சிறப்பு அறிவு - அதாவது நிபுணத்துவம் = தேவைப்படு கிறது. வாழ்க்கையில் சிறப்பு அறிவு தேவைப்படும்போது பாட சாலைகளில் பாடப்பிரிவுகள் தோன்றவேண்டி யிருக்கிறது. அப் படிப் பிரிவு செய்யும்போது மாணவரிடையே இயல்பிலே காணப் படும் சில ஆதாரமான கெட்டித்தனங்களைக் கருத்தில் கொள்ள வேண்டி யேற்படுகிறது. அதனுல் எல்லாப் பிள்ளைகளும் விஞ் ஞானப் பயிற்சிக்கு ஏற்றவர்களாக மாட்டார்கள் என்று முடிவாகிறது.
இந்த ரீதியில் பேசுவது வெளிப்பார்வைக்கு நியாய வரம்புக் குட்பட்டதாகவே தோன்றினுலும், மாணவ சமூகத்தில் அரைவாசிக் கும் அதிகமான வர்களை ஏதேன ஒரு குருட்டு மார்க்கத்தில் செலுத்தி அவர்களுக்கோ, அன்றி அவர்கள் வாழும் சமூகத்துக்கோ ஒருவித நம்பிக்கையு மில்லாமல் செய்வதாகிய அநியாயச் செயலிலன் ருே போய் முடிகிறது.
எனவே, உலகில் இன்று மிக முன்னேற்ற மடைந்துள்ள நாடு கஜனப் பார்த்து அங்கெல்லாம் நம் நாட்டைவிடப் பெருமளவிலிருந்த இத்தகைய பிரச்சினைகளை எவ்வாறு தீர்த்துக் கொண்டனர் என் பதை அறியும்வண்ணம் கல்வித்துறையி லீடுபட்டிருக்கும் நம் பெரியார்களைப் கேட்பதில் தவறில்லையே? அந்நாடுகளிலுள்ள போதனு முறைகளில் ஒரு சிலவற்றை நாமும் கைக்கொண்டு மகிழ்ச்சியும் பயனும் அபிவிருத்தியும் தரவல்ல தொழில் நுட்ப விஷயங்களில் பாடசாலை மாணவரனவர்க்குமே பயிற்சியளிப்போ மானுல் தேசாபிமானமும் தன்னம்பிக்கையும் வளர வழி செய்தவர் 35 GMT (Tais LDT (8 FT LID FT ?

மேலே கூறியவற்றையெல்லாம் இந்த இடத்துக்குப் பொருத்த் மாகவும், நமது இக்துக்கல்லூரிக்கு எது அத்தியாவசியமானது என் பதற்குமேற்ப மொழிபெயர்த்துக் கூறுவதானுல். பாடசாலைகளே அரசாங்கம் எடுப்பதற்கு முன்னமே அத்திவார மிடப்பட்டு இன்று அரை குறையாக நிற்கும் விஞ்ஞான ஆய்கூடம் கட்டி முடிக்கப் பட வேண்டும் என்ற வேண்டுகோளாக வருகிறது. குமாரசுவாமி மண்டபத்தை இத்துணைச் சிறப்பாகப் பூர்த்திசெய்து தந்த அரசாங் கம், இக்கல்லூரியின் நன் மைக்கு மிகவுமின்றிமமையாத இதனைக் கண்டிப்பாகச செய்து தரும் என்றே நம்புகிருேம்.

எங்கள் கல்லூரியில், மாணவர்களின் எண்ணிக்கையைப் பொறுத்த அளவில் மாற்றம் அதிகமாக ஏற்படவில்லை. கனிஷ்ட இடைநிலைப்பகுதி (r, Secondary) 547, உயர்நிலை விஞ்ஞானப் பகுதி 575, உயர்நிலைக் கலைப்பகுதி 248 எனப்படும் மூன்று பகுதிகளிலும் மாணவர் எண் ணிக்கை 1370. இடப் பிரச்சினையும், ஆசிரியர்கள் போதாமையும். மேலும் மாணவர்களைச் சேர்த்துக்கொள்ள இடந்தருவனவாக இல்லே, இக் காரணத்தினுல், பல மாணவர்களின் மனுக்களை நிராகரிக்கவேண்டி யிருப்பது பெரிதும் மன வேதனைக் குரியதாகும். மாணவர்களைத் தெரிவுசெய்யுங்கால், பெற்றேர்களுக்குத் தெரிந்தவர்கள்' என்பதைவிட, மாணவருக்குத் தெரிந்திருப்பதுதான் கணிக்கப்படுகிறது என்பதைப் பெற்றேர்களுக்கு உறுதியாகக் கூற விரும்புகிறுேம்.
அலுவலகக் கட்டடம்
இவ்வருடத் தொடக்கத்தில் இக் கட்டடத்தில் குடியேறினுேம், இதுபற்றிய சிந்தனை, செயல் யாவும் எங்கள் இளைப்பாறிய அதிபர் திரு. சி, சபாரத்தினம் அவர்களின் அயரா உழைப்பாகும். இக் கட்டடத் துக்கு "சபாரத்தின மண்டபம்' எனப் பெயர் சூட்டப் பழைய மாணவர் சங்கம் எடுத்துக்கொண்ட தீர்மானம் மிகப் பொருத்தமானதாகும்.
இக்கால எல்லையில் அரசாங்கம் உதவிய ரூபா 47,000 த்தைக் கொண்டு குமாரசுவாமிமண்டபத்தைப் பூரணப்படுத்தும்வேலை பிரதானமாக மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டது. பல்வேறு இடர்களினிடையே, குறிக்கப்பட்ட கால எல்லேயுள் இவ்வேலையை நிறைவேற்றிய பெற்றேர் ஆசிரிய சங்கக் கட்டடக் குழுவினருக்கு நாங்கள் என்றும் கடப்பாடுடையோம். இக் கட்டட வேலையைச் செவ்வனே மேற்பார்த்து உதவிபுரிந்த எங்கள் LIGOLIJULU திரு. குரிய விடுதி அதிபர், திரு. K. S. சுப்பிரமணியம் அவர்களுக்கும் எங்கள் மனமார்ந்த பெருகன்றி உரியதாகும். பூர்த்தியாக்கப்பட்டுச் சிறப்புடன் விளங்கும் இம்மண்டபம் இவ்வளவுகாலமும் அங்கிருந்த ஆறு வகுப்புகளுக் குப் பிறிதோர் இடம் தேடும் படலத்தை உருவாக்கியுள்ளது. இந்தச் சந்தர்ப்பத்திலே, சில ஆண்டுகட்குமுன் எங்கள் பிரதம விருந்தினரால் கல் நாட்டப்பட்ட விஞ்ஞானகூடக் கட்டடப் பணியைத் தொடர்ந்து நடத்த வேண்டிப் பொருளுதவிக்காகப் பாடசாலைச் சமூகத்துக்கு முன்பு யான் விடுத்த வேண்டுகோளை மீண்டும் விடுப்பதோடு, அரசாங்கமும் பொதுமக்களும் எங்கள் வேண்டுகோளுக்குச் செவிசாய்ப்பார்கள் எனவும் எதிர்பார்க்கிறேன். இவ்வாண்டில் விஞ்ஞான உபகரணங்களுக்குச் செல விட்ட தொகை ரூபா 10977-27,
ஆசிரியர்கள்:
1946-ம் ஆண்டு தொடக்கமாக, ஆரவாரமின்றி, அமைதியாகத் தன் கடமையைச் செவ்வனே செய்த சித்திரக்கலை ஆசான் திரு. P. குமார சுவாமி அவர்கள் சென்றதவணை ஒய்வு பெற்றுள்ளார்கள். அவருடைய ஒய்வுகாலம் மகிழ்ச்சியும், அமைதியும் நிறைந்ததாகுக, என வாழ்த்து கிருேம், கடமை யுணர்ச்சி நிரம்பிய ஆசிரியர்களான திருமதி ம. கந்த சாமி அவர்களும், திரு P இராசேந்திரம் அவர்களும் இவ்வருடத்து இரண்டாம் பருவ இறுதியில் மாற்றலாகிச் சென்றர்கள். திருமதி ம. கந்தசாமி அவர்கள் பத்தொன்பது வருடங்களும், திரு. இப்பணிகளை இயைவித்து நடாத்தும் இந்து வாலிபர் சங்கம் சிறப் பாக விஞ்ஞான மாணவரிடையே சமய நோக்கத்தைப் புகுத்த முனைக் தமை குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. சமயகுரவர் குருபூசைத் தினங்களில், அவரவர்கள் வாழ்வையும் தொண்டையும் ஆய்வுக்கண்ணுேடு நோக்கி நடாத்தப்பட்ட விவாதங்களில் ஆசிரியர்களும் மாணவர்களும் பங்கு பற்றினர். சிறப்பாக திருஞான சம்பந்தர் குருபூசைத் தினத்தன்று வண்ணை வைத்தீஸ்வர வித்தியாலயத்துடன் நடத்திய கருத்தரங்கு குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. சமய அனுட்டானங்களைக் கவர்ச்சியும் கருத்தும் உடையனவாக்க வேண்டப்படும் ஆற்றல் மாணவரிடையே நிறைய உண்டு என்பதை அக் கருத்தரங்கம் வெளிப்படுத்தியது, வழமைபோல, மகாசிவராத்திரி, நவராத்திரி, திருக்கேதீஸ்வரத் திருவிழா, காந்தி ஜயந்தி, திருவள்ளுவர்விழா, பாரதிவிழா முதலியனவற்றில் மாணவர்கள் ஆர்வத் துடன் பங்குபற்றினுர்கள்.
கொழும்பு விவேகானந்த சபையாரால் நடாத்தப்படும் சமயபாடப் பரீட்சைகளில் (1641 நூற்றியறுபத்தினன்கு மாணவர்கள் தோற்றி, முதல் வகுப்பில் சித்தியெய்திய ஒருவர் உட்பட எழுபத்தைந்துபேர் சித்தி யடைந்தனர். இத்துறையில் மாணவர்களைச் செவ்வனே இயக்கும் இந்து வாலிபர் கழக காப்பாளர் திரு. W. R மூர்த்தி அவர்களுக்கு நாம் எள்றும் நன்றியுடையோம்.
சங்கங்கள்:
பல்வேறு கழகங்களும் சங்கங்களும் வழமையான ஊக்கத்தோடு செயலாற்றின. சிறப்பாக, சரித்திர குடிமையியற் சங்கம், எங்கள் ஆசிரியர்களுள் ஒருவரான திரு. இ. மகாதேவா (தேவன் - யாழ்ப்பாணம்) அவர்களால் எழுதப்பட்ட, 'ஆவது பெண்ணுலே' என்ற நாடகத்தை வெற்றிகரம்ாக மேடை ஏற்றியது. இச்சங்கம் இலங்கையிலுள்ள சரித் திரப் பிரசித்தி வாய்ந்த இடங்களுக்குக் கல்விசம்பந்தமான ஒரு சுற்றுப் பிரயாணத்தையும் ஒழுங்கு செய்தது. விஞ்ஞானக்கழகம் மூன்றம் வருடக் கருத்தரங்கில், "சாதிக்கட்டுப்பாடு' என்ற பொருள்பற்றி விவா தித்ததோடு ஒரு விஞ்ஞான ஆய்வுச் சுற்றுப் பிரயாணத்தையும் நடத்தி யது. இவ்விவாதத்தில் பிரதான பங்கெடுத்துக் கொண்டவர்கள் இலங் கைப் பல்கலைக்கழக இளைப்பாறிய கல்வி விரிவுரையாளர் திரு. கு. ைேசயா அவர்களும், வைத்திய கலாநிதி ப. சிவசோதி (எங்கள் பழைய மாணவர்) அவர்களுமாவர். இக்கழகம் இந் நடைமுறை வருடத்தில் விஞ்ஞான சஞ்சிகை ஒன்றை வெளியிடுவதுபற்றி ஆலோசித்து வரு

கிறது. இரண்டாம் தவணையின் முதற் பகுதியில் மிகப் பயன்படக்கூடிய திரைப் படக்காட்சி யொன்றை அமெரிக்க தூதராலயம் நடாத்தியது இக்கால் எல்லையில், புவியியற்சங்கம், தமிழ்ப் பேரவை, திரைப்படக், கழகம், இளம் விவசாயிகள் கழகம் என்பன தங்கள் வழமையான முறை யில் செயற்பட்டன. இக் கழகங்களின் சேவை பாடசாலை வாழ்க்கையில் ஒரு முக்கியமான பகுதி என்பதை மறக்கமுடியாது.

ஒவ்வொரு வருட முடிவிலும் மாணவர்களால் வெளியிடப்படும் இச் சஞ்சிகை தரம் குன்றமல் விளங்கி வருகின்றது. அடுத்த ஆண்டில் கல்லூரியின் எழுபத்தைந்தாவது வருட நிறைவை யொட்டி ஒரு விசேட இதழை வெளியிடுவதற்கான ஒழுங்குகளைச் செய்து வருகிறேம் நூல்நிலையம்:
வித்தியா பகுதியினர் அளித்த நன்கொடை ரூபா 5000 த்தைக் கொண்டு விஞ்ஞானம், தமிழ் ஆகிய துறைகளில் 701 நூல்கள் சேர்க் கப் பட்டுள்ளன. "குருேலியா' கலைக் களஞ்சியங்கள் பத்தினைத் தந் துதவிய அமெரிக்க தூதராலயத்துக்கு எமது நன்றி உரியதாகுக. சென்ற விடுமுறை நாட்களில் நூல்நிலைய இருப்புக் கணக்கெடுக்கப் பட்டதோடு தவறிய புத்தகங்களைத் தேடும் முயற்சியும் பிரதானமாக மேற்கொள்ளப் பட்டது. நூல்நிலையத்தை ஒழுங்குபடுத்துவதில் விடுமுறைாாள் முழுவதும் தீவிரமாக உழைத்த நூல்கிலேய நிர்வாகக் குழுவிற்கும் ஆசிரியர்களுக் கும் காங்கள் என்றும் கடமைப் பட்டுள்ளோம்.
விடுதிச்சாலை:
அடுத்த ஆண்டிற்கு விடுதிச்சாலையில் இடங்கேட்டு வந்திருக்கும் மனுப்பத்திரங்களின் பெருந் தொகையை நோக்கும்பொழுது எங்கள் விடுதி அதிபர் திரு K S சுப்பிரமணியம் அவர்களினதும், உதவியாளர் திரு. K. நமசிவாயம் அவர்களினதும் கண்காணிப்பின்கீழ் விடுதி உணவின் தரமும் ஒழுங்கு முறையின் திறமும் மிக உன்னதமானவை என்பது வெளிப்படையாகின்றது. விடுதி மாணவர்களிடையே ஒற்றுமை யையும் ஒழுங்கையும் வளர்க்க மூன்று சங்கங்கள் இயங்குகின்றன, இவ்வாண்டு நிகழ்ச்சியில் மிக முக்கியமானது H, S. C. விடுதி மாணவர் சங்கம் நடத்திய விருந்தாகும். இவ்விருந்தில் எங்கள் கல்லூரிப் பழைய மாணவமணியாகிய வருமானவரி இலாகா முதல்வர் திரு. S. சிற்றம்பலம் அவர்கள் பிரதம விருந்தினராகக் கலந்துகொண்டார். இன்று நம் விடுதிச் சாலையில் இருநூற்றைம்பது மாணவர்கள் இருக்கிருர்கள்.

பாடசாலைச் சிற்றுண்டிச்சாலை:
பல்லாண்டுகளாகப் பெரிதும் விரும்பப்பட்ட இச்சிற்றுண்டிச்சாலை சென்ற மாசி மாதம் ஆரம்பிக்கப்பட்டு ஆசிரியர்களாலும் மாணவர்க ளாலும் சிறப்பாகப் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகின்றது.
விளையாட்டு
உதைபந்தாட்டம்:
எங்கள் மேற்பிரிவு உதைபந்தாட்டக் கோஷ்டி நான்கு நட்புறவு ஆட்டங்களும் மூன்று போட்டி ஆட்டங்களும் ஆடி, இரண்டு ஆட்டங் களில் வெற்றியும் ஒன்றில் தோல்வியும் பெற்றது. A T பிரிவில் எங்கள் கோஷ்டியினர் இறுதி ஆட்டத்தில் மாத்திரம் தோல்விகண்டனர். எங்கள் கீழ்ப்பிரிவு உதைபந்தாட்டக் கோஷ்டி நான்கு நட்புறவு ஆட் டங்கள் ஆடி, இரண்டில் வெற்றியும், ஒன்றில் சமநிலையும், ஓர் ஆட் டத்தில் தோல்வியும் பெற்றது. இக்கோஷ்டியினர் ஆடிய நான்கு போட்டி ஆட்டங்களில் இரண்டில் தோல்வியும் ஒன்றில் சமநிலையும் ஓர் ஆட்டத்தில் வெற்றியும் ஈட்டினர்.

எங்கள் மேற்பிரிவுக் கிறிக்கெட் கோஷ்டியினர், விளையாடிய எட்டு ஆட்டங்களில் மூன்றில் தோல்வியும் இரண்டில் சமநிலையும் மூன்றில் வெற்றியும் ஈட்டினர். இந்திய உயர்நிலைப்பள்ளி மாணவர்கள் கோஷ்டி யுடன் விளையாடிய யாழ்ப்பாணப் பாடசாலைகளின் கோஷ்டியில் எங் கள் "கிறிக்கெட் வீரர்களான ச. சோதிலிங்கமும், க சத்தியானந்த னும் இடம்பெற்றுப் புகழிட்டினர் எங்கள் கீழ்ப்பிரிவுக் “கிறிக்கெட்" கோஷ்டியினர், முதலிடம் பெருவிடினும், தாம் விளையாடிய மூன்று பே ட்டி ஆட்டங்களில் இரண்டில் சமநிலையும் ஒன்றில் வெற்றியும் பெற் றுத் தோல்விகாணு வீரர்களானுர்கள். யாட்டுப் போட்டியில் பங்குபற்றினர். எங்கள் கல்லூரி இல்லங்களின் போட்டி, வடபகுதி வித்தியாதிபதி திரு. S. தணிகாசலம் அவர்களின் தலைமையில் நடந்தது. நாகலிங்க இல்லம் முதலிடம் பெற்றது.
உடற் பயிற்சிப் போட்டி (P. T. Competition):
கல்விப்பகுதியினரால் நடாத்தப்பட்ட உடற்பயிற்சிப் போட்டியில் பத்தொன்பது வயதுக்குட்பட்ட மேற்பிரிவினரும் பதினுறு வயதுக் குட்பட்ட இடைநிலைப் பிரிவினரும் இரண்டாவது வருடமாகத் தொடர் ந்து முதலிடத்தைப் பெற்றனர். இந்த &(U) பிரிவினரும் கடந்த ஜூலை மாதம் கண்டியில் நடந்த அகில இலங்கைப் பாடசாலைகளின் உடற் பயிற்சிப் போட்டியில் பங்குபற்றினுர்கள். விளையாட்டுத்துறைப் பொறுப் பாளர் திரு P தியாகராசா அவர்களையும் உதவிப் பொறுப்பாளர் திரு. P. ஏகாம்பரம் அவர்களையும் பாராட்டுகிறேம்,
LUGOLIČi uusibaf (Cadeting):
இவ்வாண்டு எங்கள் படைபயில் குழுவினர் திறமையுடன் விளங்கு கின்றனர். இவ்வாண்டு தியத்தலாவையில் நடந்த கனிஷ்ட படைபயில் வோர் பாசறைப்பயிற்சியில் நான்காவது இடத்தைப் பெற்றனர் வட பகுயில் முதன்முறையாக இவ்விடத்தைப் பெற்ற பெருமை எங்களதே. இவ்வாண்டு நடந்த சிரேஷ்ட படைபயில் குழுவினர் பாசறைப்பயிற்சியில் நம் மேற்பிரிவினர் 22 துப்பாக்கிக் குறிப்பயிற்சியில் அதிகமான புள்ளி க2ளப் பெற்றனர். உதவித் தளகர்த்தனுக (2nd Lt) உயர்த்தப்பட்ட எங்கள் கனிஷ்ட படைபயில் குழு உத்தியோகஸ்தர் திரு. நா. சோமசுந் தரம் அவர்களையும். அரிய சாதனைகளை ஈட்டிய தளகர்த்தர் (Lt) திரு. S. பரமேஸ்வரன் அவர்களையும் பாராட்டுகிறுேம்.
சாரணியம்:
எங்கள் சாரணர் படையினர் பெற்ற பல பெறுபேறுகளையிட்டுப் பெரு மையடைகிறேம். 1963-64-ம் ஆண்டுகளில் யாழ்ப்பாணத்தில் நடந்த சாரணர் கூட்டணி விழா (Rally) வில், "ருேட்டறிப் போட்டிக் கேட யத்தை'- இருவருடங்களிலும் - பெற்றனர். இவர்கள் தினகரன் முத லுதவிக் கேடயத்தைப் பெற்றதோடு அகில இலங்கைத் திறமைக் கொடி யையுயும் மிகக் கோலாகலமாக மகா தேசாதிபதியிடமிருந்து பெற்றுச் சரித்திரப் பிரசித்தி பெற்றனர், எங்கள் Queen Scouts" தொகை

16 ஆக உயர்ந்திருக்கிறது. இவ்வருடம் நடாத்தப்பட்ட, ‘Chips for Jobs வாரத்தில் ரூபா 1879-75 உழைத்து யாழ்ப்பாணத்தில் - இத் தலைப்பில் இரண்டாவது வருடமாகத் தொடர்ந்து முதலிடம் பெற்றர்கள். இப்பெறுபேறுகளுக்கான விழா, வருடாந்த விழாவன்று பிரதம ஆணை யாளர் திரு. E. W. கன்னங்கர அவர்களை விருந்தினராகக் கொண்டு நடாத்தப்பட்டது. இவ்விழாவின்பொழுது ஒரு சாரணர் சஞ்சிகையும் வெளியிடப்பட்டது. இப்பெருமைகளுக்கெல்லாம் காரணர்களான சார னரியக்குநர்களான திருவளர்கள் T. சிவராஜா, S. C. முத்துக்குமாரன், W. சிவசுப்பிரமணியம் ஆகியோரின் உன்னதமான சேவையைப் பெரி தும் பாராட்டுகின்ருேம். இன்னும் எங்கள் சாரணக்குருளைகளுக்குத் தலைவரான திரு R S. சிவநேசராசாவையும் பாராட்டுகிருேம்,
மாணவ முதல்வர் சபை (Prefects Council';
செல்வன் க. தயானந்தனைத் தலைவனுகக் கொண்ட இந்தச் சபை, திரு. P. S. குமாரசாமியின் மேற்பார்வையில் நமது கல்லூரியின் பல்வேறு முயற்சிகளுக்கு உதவியதுடன் சீரிய ஒழுங்கையும் நிலைநாட்டியது. ஆற் றல் மிக்க இச்சபையினரை நாம் மெச்சிப் பாராட்டுகின்றேம்.
பரீட்சைப் பெறுபேறுகள்:
பல்லாண்டுகளுக்குப் பின் வடமாகாணத்தாரால் நடாத்தப்படும் T. S. C. பரீட்சைக்கு மாணவர்கள் அனுப்பப்பட்டு, மிகத் திறமையான சித்தியெய்திய பதினெண்மருட்பட ஐம்பத்தேழு மாணவர்கள் சித்தியெய் தினர். 1963 ஆகஸ்ட் மாத ஜி. சி. ஈ. சாதாரணதரப் பரீட்சையில் நாற் பது மாணவர்கள் ஆறிலும் ஆறுக்கு மேற்பட்ட பாடங்களிலும் சித்தி யெய்தினர். முப்பத்தினுன்கு மாணவர்கள் ஐந்து பாடங்களிற் சித்தி யெய்தினர். மார்கழி மாதப் பரீட்சையில் அறுபத்தொன்பது மாணவர் கள் ஆறுக்கு மேற்பட்ட பாடங்களிலும் நாற்பத்திரண்டு மாணவர்கள் ஐந்து பாடங்களிலும் சித்தியெய்தினர். 1963 மார்கழி மாத H. S. C பரிட் சையில் முதல் வகுப்பிற் சித்தியெய்திய ஒருவருட்படப் பதினறு மாண வர்கள் சித்தியடைந்தனர், பத்து மாணவர்கள் நூனசித்தி பெற்றனர்.
இலங்கைப் பல்கலைக்கழகப் புகுமுக வகுப்பு:
இருபத்தேழு மாணவர்கள் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் இடம்பெற்றர்கள். அவர்கள் கலைப்பகுதியில் எழுவரும் வைத்தியப் பகுதியில் நால்வரும் உயிரியற் பகுதியில் இருவரும் பெளதிகப் பகுதியில் அறுவரும் பொறி யியற் பகுதியில் எண்மருமாவர். பொறியியற் பகுதியில் வடமாகாணப் பாடசாலைகளுள் முதலிடமும், அகில இலங்கையில் இரண்டாவது இட மும் எங்கள் பாடசாலை பெற்றுள்ளது. י

இலங்கை இரசாயன சங்கத்தாரால் நடாத்தப்படும் கட்டுரைப் போட் டியில் 1963-ம் ஆண்டு செல்வன் C. பாண்டுரங்கன் இரண்டாவது பரிசு பெற்றர். 1961-62 ஆகிய இரண்டு ஆண்டுகளிலும் எங்கள் மாணவர்களே இச்சங்கத்தின் முதற்பரிசுகளைப் பெற்றர்களென்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.
பழைய மாணவர் சங்கம்:
பல்வேறு வழிகளில் எங்களுக்குப் பக்கபலமாக நிற்கும் பழைய மாணவர்களுக்கு மிகவும் கடமைப்பாடுடையோம். கடந்த எழுபத்தைந்து ஆண்டுகளாக, யாழ்ப்பாணம் இந்துக்கல்லூரி வைத்திய நிபுணர்களையும் பொறியியல் வல்லுநர்களையும் நியாயதுரந்தரர்களையும் நல்லாசிரியர்களை யும் சிவில்சேவை உத்தியோகத்தர்களையும், படை வீரர்களையும், சிறந்த வணிகர்களையும் அரசியல் நிபுணர்களையும் உருவாக்கி காட்டுக்குத் தந்தி ருக்கிறது. பழைய மாணவர்கள் சங்கம் யாழ்ப்பாணத்திலும் கொழும்பி லும் தொடர்ந்து பணியாற்றி வருகிறது. மிக உன்னதமான பதவிகளை வகித்து எமக்குப் பெருமை தரும் பழைய மாணவர்களிற் சிலரைக் குறிப் பிடாதிருக்க முடியாது. சுகாதாரப் பகுதி நிரந்தரக் காரியதரிசி திரு. Mr. & Mrs. Muttusami pillai, Ladies & Gentlemen,
On behalf of the Jaffna Hindu Collede I have great pleasure in offering you all a very cordial welcome to our Annual Prize-Giving this evening.
To Mr & Mrs. Muttusamipillai we offer a special word of welcome which we hope will symbolise even if it does not measure up to the long and intimate ties that have bound both of you to our school
We welcome you, Sir, not only as a distinguished alumnus but as one who played no small part in guiding the destinies of the College. Entering its portals more than half a century ago, you have - as student, as teacher, as Secretary of the O. B. A., as Secretary of the Board of Management and finally as Manager of the College and its Affiliated Schools - maintained a long and varied association with the institution. So rich and so memorable has this association been that one might well say that rare is the old boy that has had the privilege of serving his old school so long and so devotedly. Equally rare, one might add, is the school that has had an alumnus so strong and so steadfast in defending its interests and advancing its progress.
That these sentiments are not merely complimentary flourishes prompted by the occasion and the opportunity will be clear to those who remember the uncertain days of the take-over when the future of our school was so much in the balance. At that time, returning after your European tour and sudying matters at first-hand, you showed as much wisdom as generosity in extricating the school from the unhappy position in which it found itself during the take-over, the result being that Jaffna Hindu had to become a state school,

Critics there are who may say that this change in the status of the school can only mean an ebb in the religious tradition that has informed and inspired edu cation at Jaffna Hindu Such a Cessimistic estimate is belied by our experience at the school in the days subsequent to the take-over; but, even if it were not, your continued leadership of the Saiva Paripalana Sabhai, in recognition of which you have been honoured with the title 'Sivanerikkavalar' by the Madurai Atheenam, and your eminence at the bar should reassure all good Hindus and all supporters of law and order that what is healthy in Hinduism and what is sacred in society have in you a champion renowned and redoubtable enough to hoid the forces of atheism and anarchy at bay. We are indeed honoured by your presence here this evening.
No less honoured are we, Madam, by your gracious presence. Hailing from a family noted for its loyalty to the precepts and practices of the Hindu faith, you have been an embodiment of the piety and generosity asso. ciated down the ages with Hindu womanhood-qualities that have contributed in no small measure to soften the rigorous life of your illustrious husband.
We are indeed grateful to you both for taking time off from your other duties to honour and to grace this function-particularly to you, Madam, for consenting to give away the prizes, a duty we might have dispensed with as being dull and tiring to the giver were it not so
gratifying to the receiver and so inspiring to the looker-ch.
Before I proceed to report on the work and achievements of the College since the last Prize-Day, I should like to place on record my humble tribute to the great work of our retired Principal, Mr. C. Sabaretnam, who left us in June last. Like our Chief Guest

of the evening, Mr. Sabaretnam has a long and proud record of close association with the school. Beginning as a student and becoming Assistant Master, Vice-Principal and Principal of the College, he has had the honour not only of sharing in its destiny but of shaping it in a manner that befits the premier Hindu institution of its kind in the island.
Over the years Jaffna Hindu College has been particularly fortunate in its choice of Principals. They form a veritable galaxy in which Mr. Sabaretnam - patient, painstaking and perspicacious in all that he did - is another star brilliant in its own way. His presence here this evening as on other occassions is proof of the abiding interest that he has in the prestige and progress of his old school. After the grand functions held here and in Colombo on his retirement, it may sound superfluous to say anything more, though I might avail myself of the occasion to say how grateful I am to Providence that I as student and colleague an able to pay homage to a great teacher and administrator; in fact the smooth running of the school during what may be termed an inter-recinum is testimony enouch to the masterly handling of affairs by Mr. Sabaretnam.
At a time when apprehension is rife that, under the state system, the school will be divorced from the parents, old boys and well-wishers, Mr. Sabaretnam's unflagging solicitude for the Welfare of the Schcol is an edifying example of how the school community can rally round the School and supplement what the state does for its maintenance and progress. In fact, one has only to look round to see how fruitful such co-operation between the school Community and the state has already been. This very hall, bearing the honoured name of a former head of this school, is the magnificent result of the joint effort of teachers, old boys, management students, well-wishers and the department where in all fairness

it must be stated that, the bulk of the work having been done by the school community, the state stepped in only to give the finishing touches.
It is not to be implied, however, that a repetition of this process in all the Schools of the island would produce the ideal system of national education. The process, if it can be repeated at all should be in reverse order with the state taking on the main burden - that of providing the Schools, equipping them and staffing them and of formulating the general policy - and the school Community stepping in to adapt the general policy to the traditions of the School and the needs of society. That, I venture to think, is not too tall an Order on the school community in a Country which has enjoyed the benefits of universal franchise for more than three decades and of free education for well - nigh twenty year S.
And it is to Such a School Community, intelligently aware of the situation in which it finds itself and acutely conscious of the problems that face the younger gene. ration, that I wish to pose the problem which today worries us at Jaffna Hindu as it does all others associated with education. The problem is the segregation of students into what are called the Science stream and the arts stream.
In an age when industrial development sets the pace and provides the means for all other aspects of national development, education in the Sciences has a value all its own. In such a Context the term 'stream con. notes something dynamic, something that could lead if not to a research degree at Cambridge or Princeton at least to a curative job in medicine or a creative one in engineering. But what is the position of the student in the arts stream of the school? With the arteries of the public and allied services so clogged with chronic

unemployment, the term 'stream" as used in relation to arts is a Complete mis nomer for what has become so stagnant and so purposeless as to be demoralising to both the educand and the educator alike.
In an era when science and technique are required to keep the wheels of production moving at a daily increasing tempo, when social recognition is reserved only for the scientifically or technically qualified, when employment is hard to come by for those with a liberal education, it is folly - blind if not cri minal - to perpetuate a segregation that not only impoverishes the Community but breeds frustration, bitterness and despair in the young mind.
The justification held out is that the complexity of modern life demands specialisation, that specialisa
tion in life means diversification at school, that diversification has to be done on intelligence ratings as
manifested in the mastery of certain basic skills, and that Consequentiy all children are not equal to a course of training in the Sciences.
This line of reasoning, logical to all appearances, has led to the illogicality of leading more than half the school population into a blind alley with no hope for themselves or for the Society in which they live.
Would it be therefore too exacting to demand of the powers - that - be in education that they look at the more advanced countries of the world to find out how they have solved a similar problem of much larger dimensions? Would it be unpatriotic or lacking in self-confidence to take a leaf out of their book and provide to the entirety of the School population training in technical skills Conducive to happy, purposeful, productive work?
We do not intend these questions to be merely rhetorical. We hope they will be answered not merely

in another impressive White Paper but in the palpable terms of bricks and mortar, of equipment and staff, and even of employment and social acceptance.
Translated into what is pertinent to and urgent for us at Jaffna Hindu, this request means the Completion of the Science Block for which the foundation was laid even before the take-over. We are confident that the state, so efficient in completing the Cumaraswamy Hall, will not disappoint us in what is more vital to the welfare of the School."
We shall no W proceed to place before you, our activi. ties for the year under review. Numerically we have been keeping ourselves steady. The total strength of our school is about 1370 categorized as follows:-Junior Secondary Section 547 Collegiate Science 575 Collegiate Arts 248. Problems of accommodation and staffing prevent us from taking in more students. It is rather depressing to have to reject so many eligible applicants. We would however assure parents that in the matter of selection for admission it is what the boy knows rather than whom the parent knows that really counts.
We went into occupation of the administration block at the beginning of this year. The entire project was due to the efforts of Buildings & Equipment Mr. C. Sabaretnam, our retired Principal, and the O. B. A. has rightly decided to name it 'Sabaretnam Block'. The other major building programme during the period was the completion of work on the Cumaraswamy Hall out of government grant of about Rs. 47,000/-. We are grateful to the P. T. A. Building Committee for undertaking the work at short notice and finishing it within the stipulated period in spite of heavy odds. Our thanks are due to Mr. K. S. Subramaniam, our Warden, and to Mr. S. Pon. nampalam, an Old Boy, for Supervising the work. This

magnificent Hall in its finished form presents us with the irony of having to find space for about six classes which were till now housed here. We spent Rs. 10,977/27 on Science Equipment during this period.
Mr. P. Cumarasamy Iyer, teacher of art since 1946, retired during the first term this year. Quiet and unassuming in his ways, he served the school quite loyally for seventeen years. We wish him happiness in re' staff tirement. Two of our devoted teachers Mrs. M. Kandasamy and Mr. P. Rajendram went on transfer at the end of the 2nd term. The former taught here for about 19 years and the latter for about nine years. Methodical in their approach and keenly interested in their pupils, both of them won the affection of the young ones in their charge. They carry our best wishes for their future. Mr. S. Namasivayam B. Sc. who was select. ed to do post-Graduate course in Education left us this month to join the University of Ceylon. We welcome to the Staff the following:

Mr. M. Nadarajah, who was additional clerk for over a year, went on transfer in January this year. Mr. M. Chandrasegaram was appointed Ground Boy early this year in the place of Mr. Sivabalasubramaniam who left us in December.
The Y. M. H. A. which co-ordinates all these activities was intensely active in infusing spiritual enthusiasm particularly among science students. Religious and Cultural Debate was a novel feature in the Activities celebration of Guru Poojahs in which students and teachers participated. Special mention must be made of the Seminar on 'St. Thirugnana Sampanthar' in which Wai.

dyeswara Vidyalaya took part. It was indeed an impressive event that kindled the belief that religious observances could be made interesting and meaningful if only the right approach was made. Students actively organised the Mahasivarathiri, Navarathiri, Gandhi Day, Thiruvalluvar Day, Bharathi Day and the Thiruketheeswaram Festival. 164 students sat the Vivekananda Society Examinations and 75 passed with one first division. The President Mr. W. E. Moorthy deserves our thanks for guiding the activities of the Y. M. H. A.
The various Societies and Clubs carried on their activities with the usual enthusiasm. Notable among
them is the Historical and Civic Associal societies tion which successfully staged a play 'g, Ajg) Gugio, GOO)(3Gu' adapted from Fanny Hurst by Mr. E. Mahadevan of our teaching staff. The proceeds were in aid of the Temple Building Fund. The Science Association held the third Annual Seminar on 'Caste System.'" Mr. K. Nesiah, Emeritus Lecturer in Education of the University of Ceylon, and Dr P. Sivasothy, an Old Boy, led the discusson. Both the Associations organised tours to places of historical and Scientific interest in Ceylon. The American Embassy held a very instructive Science Forum for two days in May last. The Geographical Society, the Tamil Peravai, the Film Club and the Young Farmers' Club had their normal programme during this period. Keen interest and enthusiasm shown by pupils and teachers in these co-curricular activities will go a long way to building character.
The last publication of the College Magazine published by the students maintained its usually high standard. Efforts are being made to The Young indu bring out a Special Number to mark the 75th Anniversary of the
College next year.

702 volumes in Science and in Tamil worth Rs. 5000/- were added to the Library on the grant made by the Education Dept. 10 volumes of Grolier's The Library Encyclopaedia were presented to the library by the American Embassy to whom our thanks are due. A thorough stock-taking of the Library was done during the last holidays and a special effort has been made to trace missing books. We are grateful to the Library Committee and to all the teachers who helped us during holiday time to rake the library ship" shape.
Judging from the pressure for admission to the Hostel, it is evident that our high standards of diet and discipline are intact under the continued The Hostel guidance of our veteran Warden Mr. K. S. Subramaniam and his able assistant Mr. K. Namasivayam. The three Hostel Unions are functioning actively to foster followship among the hostellites. The highlight of the period was the H. S. C. Hostellers' Union Dinner held under the patronage of Mr. S. Sit tampalam, Commissioner of Inland Revenue, a distin
quished alumnus. Our number in the Hostel today is 25O
The School Canteen. A much needed amenity opened last February is proving very popular among the students and teachers.
Our Soccer First Eleven played four friendly matches and played three competition matches; won 2 and lost 1. We became runners up in the Group. Sport Our Second Eleven played 4 friendly matches, won 2 drew l and lost l; played 4 competition matches, won l, lost 2, drew l,

Our First Eleven played eight Inter - School matches, won 3, lost 3 and drew 2. S. Jothilingam and K. Sathiananthan had the Cricket distinction of representing the Jaffna Schools' Cricket Team against the Indian Schools' Cricket Team.
Our Second Eleven was an unbeaten team though not champions; played three competition matches; won I and drew 2.
The Annual Inter - House Meet was held under the patronage of Mr. S. Thanikasalam, our Assistant Director of Education, and his wife. NagaAthletics : lingam House became the champions. The College Athletic Team were the runnersup in the Inter - School Athletic Sports Meet organised by the J. S. S. A. The Diana Challenge Cup for Relay was annexed for the 2nd year in succession. Two of our athletes in the Senior Division and the other in the Junior participated in the Public Schools Sports Meet.
The Senior - under 19 - and the Intermediate - under 16-Squads won the lst place for the second year in succession in the P. T. P. T. Competitions Competitions organised by the Education Department. These two Squads participated in the the All-Ceylon Schools P. T. Competition held in Kandy in July. We are grateful to Mr. P. Thiagarajah, our Prefect of Games, and Mr. P. Ehamparam, his assistant, for the efficient and smooth co-ordination of these activities.
Our Cadets have fared well this year. Our Junior Cadets were placed 4th in the Battalion at the Annual Junior Cadet Camp held this year at Diya. Cadeting talawa. This was the first time that any school in the North secured this ranking. Our Senior Cadets scored the highest number of points in the

Battalion in 22 Rifle firing competition at the Senior Cadet Camp. We congratulate Mr. N. Somasundaram, our Junior Cadet Officer, who was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the Ceylon Cadet Corps and Mr. S. Parameswaran, our Senior Cadet Officer, on these creditable achievements.
We are indeed proud of the many distinctions that our Scout Troop won during this period. They got the
lst place at the Jaffna Rally both in l963 Scouting and in 1964, winning the Rotary Challenge
Shield on both occasions. They won the Thinakaran First Aid Shield; and they made history by winning the All-Island Merit Flag which was ceremonially presented to them by the Governor - General. The number of Queen Scouts has risen to l6- the highest in Scouting. At the annual chips-for-jobs week they earned the highest amount in Jaffna for the second time in succession - Rs. 1879/75. All these victories were worthily celebrated at the Annual Field Day with the Chief Commissioner Mr. E. W. Kannangara as the Chief Guest. A souvenir was also published to mark the occasion. Our warmest congratulations to all the Scout Masters-Mr. T. Sivarajah, Mr. S. C. Muttucumaran and Mr. W. Sivasubramaniam.
"The Prefects' Council. This body with K. Dayanandan as
Senior Prefect under the supervision of Mr. P. S. Cumaraswamy has helped us a great deal with the organization of school activities and the maintenance of discipline. We greatly appreciate the vital role played by them in the life of the school.
Examination Results
Candidates were presented to the J. S. C. (N.P.T.A.) 1963 for the first time, 57 students passed with 18 first divisions.

Twenty-seven students obtained admission to the University of Ceylon. - Arts 7, Medicine 4, Bio Science 2 Physical Science 6 and Engineering 8. The number of admissions to the Engineering Faculty is the highest for any school in the North and the second highest in the island.
Essay Prize C. Pandurangan of the H. S. C. won the second prize in the All Island Schools' Essay Competition Conducted by the Ceylon Chemical Society in 1963. Our boys won the first prize in 1961 and
1962.
Our strength is in our Old Boys who have so loyally backed us with donations and in other ways. Jaffna Hindu for three quarters of a century has The 0. B. A. Contributed to the national pool medi. cal men, engineers, llawyers, teachers, civil servants, scholars, administrators, men in the mer. cantile sector and in other occupations. The O. B. A. both in Jaffna and in Colombo continues to Co-ordinate their activities for the welfare of their Alma Mater. We must make special mention of three of our Old Boys who are occupying very high positions - Mr. C. Balasingham, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Mr. S. Sittampalam, Commissioner of Inland Revenue, Mr.

W. Sivasupramaniam, Commissioner of Assize. We wish Mr. S. U. Soma Segaram, the retired Asst. Director of Education, health and happiness in his retirement and congratulate Mr. M. Mylvaganam, one of our former teachers' on being honoured by the Madurai Atheenam with the title 'Siddhantha Siromani'.
We record with deep Sorrow the death of Dr. S. Subramaniam, one of our great benefactors, who served the College as a member of the Board of Directors, and the death of two former teachers - Mr. W. Mutt Cumaru M. A. and Mr. M. Selvadurai who served the school with loyalty and devotion for several years.
Our thanks go to Mr. S. Thanikasalam, Asst. Director of Education, and his Staff who have been helpful with their advice and guidance in intricate Thanks matters connected with School administration, finance and building work. I am particularly grateful to all the teachers, for their ready assistance and for sharing the administrative duties of a big school like ours during this difficult period. I am equally thankful to the clerical and minor staff for their unstinted co-operation. This review will not be complete if we do not thank our parents for their presence. We feel confident that they are satisfied that we use our resources which Come from them in the best interests of the students. There is much talk of student indiscipline these days; whatever that may mean we need their understanding and contact to be able to solve a number of problems that we are faced with from time to time. Let me embrace this occasion to remind all our friends and well-wishers that our College is reaching its 75th year in 1965. We do Count on their support to commemorate this event in a fitting manner.
