யாழ்ப்பாண இந்துக் கல்லூரியின் வருடாந்தப் பரிசளிப்பு விழாவிலே உங்களையெல்லாம் வரவேற்றுபசரிக்கக் கிடைத்த வாய்ப்பினை எண்ணி மகிழ்ச்சியடைகிருேம். அதிலும் வெற்றிகரமான பல சேவைகள் செய்து வரும் நமது கல்லூரி தனது காலத்தில் ஒரு நூற்றண்டின் முக்காற் பாகத்தைக் கடந்து நிற்கும் இப் புனித ஆண்டு விழாவில் இத்தகைய பெரியோரை வரவேற்கும் பேறு பெற்ற நமது மகிழ்ச்சிக்கு எல்லையே uმl6ზე?ვს).
மகிழ்ச்சிகரமான இந்தச் சூழ்நிலையில் பேராசிரியர் மயில்வாகன மவர்களை நமது பிரதம விருந்தினராகப் பெற்றதை நாம் ஒரு பெரும் கெளரவமாகவே கருதுகிருேம். உண்மையில் இப் பேராசிரியரவர்களே நமது பிரதம விருந்தினராகப் பெற்றுக்கொள்ள முன்பு ஒரு சமயம் எதிர்பார்த்தோம் ஆணுல் மனித வாழ்விலே காலத்துக்குக்கும் இடத் துக்கும் ஏற்ப மிகப் பொருத்தமான ஒரு தலைவர் வந்து வாய்ப்பது அரிது. எனினும் அடைய வேண்டுமென்ற ஆவல் சமயத்துக்கேற்ற விடாமுயற்சிக்கு ஊக்கமளிக்குமாதலால் இந்த வருடத்துச் சிறந்த இக் கல்வி விழாவிலே, ஐய, உங்கள் தலைமை கிடைத்தது நமக்கெல் லாம் சாதாரண மகிழ்ச்சி தருவதொன்றன்று.
இவ் வீழத் திருநாட்டின் தவப் புதல்வர்களில் கல்வியினுல் மிகச் சிறந்த மக்களுள் ஒருவராக உங்களைப் போற்றுகிறுேம். மத்திய பாட சாலே வாழ்க்கையிலிருந்து கேம்பிரிட்ஜ் மாநகரத்துக் கவென்டிஷ் ஆய் கூடங்கள் வரையிலும் இடையருமற் பெற்று வந்த உபகாரச் சம்பளத் துடன் - அதாவது அக் காலத்திலே மிகத் தீவிரமான நுண்ணறிவு படைத்தவர்களுக்கே கிடைக்கக்கூடிய அரும் பேறன இலவசக் கல்வி வசதியுடன் சென்று, இலங்கைய ரொருவர்க்கரிதான நுண்மாண் நுழை புலமை தங்களிடம் குடிகொண்டிருப்பதைப் புலப்படுத்தினீர்கள். அக் காலத்தில் இளம் பருவ நிலையிலிருந்த இலங்கைச் சர்வகலாசாலைக் கல்லூரியிலே பெளதிகவியல் விரிவுரையாளராகத் தங்கள் சேவையைப்

பெரிதும் வேண்டி வற்புறுத்தி மறித்திராவிட்டால் கேம்பிரிட்ஜ் தொடர் புகளைத் தாங்கள் மேலும் விரிவடையச் செய்து ஆஸ்தான அங்கத்து வத்தையே பெற்றிருப்பீர்கள். அதன் பின் பெளதிகப் பேராசிரியராக வும், விஞ்ஞானப் பகுதிக் கதிகாரியாகவும், இடையிடையே பதில் துணை வேந்தராகவும் கடமையாற்றி நமது சர்வகலாசாலேயை உருவாக்கிய சிற்பிகளுள் ஒருவராய்த் திகழ்ந்து, தாங்கள் ஆற்றிய அரிய சேவைகளி ணுலன்றே இலங்கைச் சர்வகலாசாலே இன்று கல்விக்கும் கலா ஞானத் துக்கும் உயர்ந்ததொரு கலங்கரை விளக்கமாக மிளிர்கின்றது,
இவ்வாறன பதவிப் பெருமையில் மயங்கி இருந்துவிடாமல் தாங் கள் இப்பொழுதும் ஆய்கூடங்களிற் சென்று ஆராய்ச்சிகளைச் செய் தும் அவற்றின் பயனுகப் பெற்ற அரிய உண்மைகளை மனிதகுலத் துக்கு எடுத்துக் கூறியும் வருவதைக் கண்டு நாம் தலை வணங்குகி ருேம்; இவ் வாராய்ச்சிகளுள்ளும் சிறப்பாக நுண் கதிர்கள் பற் றிய தங்கள் ஆராய்ச்சிக் கட்டுரைகளைச் சர்வதேச விஞ்ஞான சஞ்சி கைகளும் எடுத்தாண்ட செய்தி நமது நாட்டின் புகழுக்கே ஏற்றந்தருவ தொன்றகும். அவ்வாறே பேராசிரியர் என்ற பெரும் பெயரோடமைக் திருந்துவிடாமல் சர்வகலாசாலைக்கு வெளியிலும் விஞ்ஞானசம்பந்தமான விவகாரங்களில் தாராளமாக ஈடுபட்டு வருகிறீர்கள், பூமியைத் திருத் துங்கள்; விவசாயத்தில் ஈடுபடுங்கள் என்று பரிசளிப்பு விழா மேடை களில் நின்று குருபிடத்து மதபோதனைகள் செய்வதை விடுத்து வன் னிப்பகுதியிலே உண்மையான ஒரு விவசாயியாக இருந்து அருமையான முறையில் ஊக்கமும் அளிக்கிறீர்கள். அதுவுமன்றி விஞ்ஞான அறிவை ஒருவன் பெற வேண்டுமானுல் அவனுக்கு ஆங்கில மொழிதான் இன் றியமையாதது என்று கூறுவதை விடுத்துத் தங்கள் பேச்சுக்களினுலும் எழுத்துக்களினுலும், பண்டைக் காலத்துச் சாஸ்திரங்களுக்கு மட்டுமன்றி நவீனகாலத்து விஞ்ஞான சாஸ்திரங்களினறிவைப் பெறவும் தமிழ்மொழி நன்கு உடயோகப்படும் என்பதை எடுத்துக் காட்டி நிலைநாட்டி வருகி நீர்கள்.

விழாவினைச் சிறப்பிப்பது நமக்கெல்லாம் பெருமைதருவ தொன்றகும்;
ஒன்றுக்கொன்று மாறுபட்ட சக்திகள் ஒன்ருயிணைந்த தத்துவமே
இவ்வுலகின் தத்துவம் என்பதை அர்த்தகாரீஸ்வர மூர்த்தமாகக் கண்டு போற்றும் இந்து சமூகத்தவராகிய கமக்கு மகளிர் கல்லூரி அதிபரும் இம்மேடையில் வீற்றிருப்பது எத்துணைப் பொருத்தமென்பதைக் கூற
வேண்டியதில்லை. ஆகையால் திருமதி ஆறுமுகமவர்களே, தாங்கள் எங்களுடைய வேண்டுகோளை ஏற்றுப் பரிசில்களை வழங்க உடன்பட்டு இங்கு வந்து சிறப்பித்தமைக்காகத் தங்களுக்குப் பெரிதும் கடமைப்பட் டிருக்கிருே மென்பதைத் தெவித்துககொள்ள விரும்புகிறேன்,
எங்கள் கல்லூரியின் கடந்தகாலச் சரித்திரத்தை இத்தகைய சிறந்த ஒரு சந்தர்ப்பத்திலே பெ துவாகச் சந்திப்பதில தவறில்லை யென்றே கருதுகிறேன். அங்கியருடைய சமயக் கோட்பாடுகளினுலு ம அவர்களுடைய நடையுடைபாவனைகளினுலும் நம் ஈழநாட்டவர்க்குக் கேடு சூழ்ந்தபோது அவற்றை எதிர்த்து நாவலர் பெருமானும் அவர்காலத் தைச் சேர்ந்தவரான அனகாரிகதர்மபாலரும் மேற்கொண்டுவந்த இயக்கங் களினுல் தேசாபிமானமும் பொதுநல உணர்ச்சியும் கொண்ட ஒருசிறு கூட்டத்தவர் ஆக்கமும் ஊக்கமும் பெற்றுத் தற்காலக்கல்வியையும் இந்துசமயச் சூழலிலே போதிக்கவேண்டு மென்ற உயர்ந்த நோக்கத் துடன் இக் கலலூரியைத் தோற்றுவித்தனர். அவர்களுடைய காலத் துக்கும் பல ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னர்த் தோன்றி வளர்ச்சியடைந்து, அக்காலத்து அரசபீடததின் செல்வாக்கினையும் பெற்றிருந்த கல்லூரி களின் எதிர்ப்பினுல் நம் இந்துக்கல்லூரி சிறிது தாமதமாகவே முன் னேறிவந்தது. ஆயினும் லட்சியங்களுக்கும் கொள்கைகளுக்குமே இயல் பாயமைந்த சக்தி இந்துக்கல்லூரியைப் படிப்படியாகச் சிறந்துவளரச் செய்து, எந்த லட்சியங்களுக்காக இது தோற்றுவிக்கப்பட்டதோ அந்த லட்சியங்களைத் தேசீய ரீதியிலும் அரசாங்க வட்டாரங்களிலும் வலு வடையச் செய்தது. பின்னர் இலவசக் கல்வி நடைமுறைக்கு வந்த போது அது நம் நாட்டின் சனநாயக அபிவிருத்திக்கு இன்றியமை யாததென்று அதனை இந்துக்கல்லூரி ஏற்றுக் கொண்டதிலிருந்து மாணவர் தொகையினுலும் கல்வித்துறைகள் பலவற்றிலும் பெற்ற வெற்றிகளி ணுலும் குறிப்பிடத்தக்க அளவுக்கு முன்னேற்றங்கண்டது. அதன்பின் உதவி நன்கொடைபெறும் பாடசாலைகளை அரசாங்கம் ஏற்றுக் கொண்ட போதும் யாழ்ப்பாண இந்துக்கல்லூரி தனக்கெனப் பெறறுக்கொண்ட உயர்ந்தநிலையை இழந்துவிடவில்லை. இது தனது தனித்தன்மையை இழந்து உருமாறிக் கும்பலோடு கும்பலாகக் கலந்துவிடுமே யென்று மற்றவர்களஞ்சியதுபோல இக் கல்லூரி அஞ்சிப் பின்வாங்கவில்லை,

பின்பு உயர் வகுப்புக்களில் விஞ்ஞான பாடங்களைக்கூடச் சுயமொழி மூலம் போதிக்க வேண்டு மென்று ஏற்பட்டபோதும் இந்துக் கல்லூரி தயங்கி நிற்கவில்லை. இக்கல்லூரியின் சமூக தேசீய பாரம்பரியத்திற்கு ஏற்றதாக, பொதுமக்கள் கல்வியின் சகல துறைகளிலும் முன்னேற்ற மடைய மேலும் ஒருபடியாக இதனையும் ஏற்றுக் கொண்டது
இவ்வாறு பலதிறப்பட்ட மாற்றங்களுக் கிடையிலும் சிறிய கூட்டத் தினரான அவ்வுயர்ந்த லட்சிய வாதிகளின் கொள்கைகளி னின்றும் யாழ்ப்பாண இந்துக்கல்லூரி தவறிவிடவில்லை என்று நாம் உறுதியாக நம்புகிருேம், இவற்றல் தன் நிலையினின்றும் மாறிவிடாமல் தனது லட்சியங்களை மேலும் விரிவாக்கி மிளிரச் செய்வதற்கு இந்த மாற் றங்களையே இக்கல்லூரி சாதகமாக்கிக்கொண்டது என்றே கூறலாம்.
அன்றியும் எதிர்காலத்தில் காம் பின்பற்றப்போவது அல்லது இந்துக் கல்லூரியிலே நாம் நமக்கென வகுத்துக் கொள்ளவேண்டியது இதுதான் என்று, சிந்தனைக்கோ விவாதத்துக்கோ இடமில்லாதவகை யில் திட்ட மிடப்பட்டிருக்கவில்லை. விஞ்ஞானம் என்பது நமது நாளாந்த வாழ்வோடு ஒன்ரு யிணைந்துள்ள இக்காலத்திலே, வாழ்வுக் கலைகள் என்றும் விஞ்ஞானங்கள் என்றும் கல்விமுறையில் ஒன்றுக் கொன்று தொடர்பில்லாத இருவேறு பிரிவு செய்வது அறிவுடைமையா காது. அதனுல் வாழ்வு பயனற்றுப்போவது ஒருபுறமிருக்க, வாழ்க்கை யில் விரக்தி ஏற்படவும் காரணமாகிறது. எனவே, கல்வி முறையில் இப்பொழுது மாற்று அமைப்பு ஒன்றை அவசியம் செய்துகொள்ள வேண்டிய நிலையில் இருககிறேம். தம் மக்களிடத்தில் வாஞ்சை கொண்ட பெற்றேரையும் மாணவர்களையும் இது சம்பந்தமாக நாம் கலந் தாலோசிப்போமானுல், அனைவர்க்குமே விஞ்ஞான போதனை கிடைக்க வேண்டும்; வாழ்க்கைக் கலைகள் ஏதோ இருப்பது இருந்தால் போதும் என்று கூற அவர்கள் தயங்கமாட்டார்கள், இக்காலக் கல்வியைப் பாதிக்கும் பிரிவு முறையைத் தவிர்த்துக் கொள்ள இந்த வழி ஓரளவுக்குத்தான் உபயோகப்படலாம். ஆனுல் சிக்கலான பெரும் பிரச்சினை ஒன்றுக்கு இந்த வழியில் நிரந்தரமான தீர்வுகாண முடியாது. வாழ்வுக்கலைகள் விஞ்ஞானங்கள் என்றிலலாமல், எல்லாவற்றையும் எல்லார்க்கும் போதிப்பதன்மூலம் இந்தப் பிரச்சினையை ஒருவழியாகத் தீர்த்துவிடலாம் என்று, நான் எங்ங்ணம் துணிந்து கூற முடியும்? அது வெறும் ஒட்டு வைத்தியத்துக்கே சமானமானதாகும். அப்படியானுல் நாம் எந்தவகையில் முயற்சிக்கவேண்டும்; இந்துக் கல்லூரியில் நாம் கையாளக்கூடிய மாற்று அமைப்பு எது என்றல், விஞ்ஞானங்களையே வாழ்வுக் கலைகளாக மலரச்செய்து, மனிதன் சூழ்நிலைகளுக் கேற்

பத் தன் வாழ்வை அமைத்துக் கொள்வதும், அச் சூழ்நிலைகளைத் தன் வசப்படுத்துவதும், தனக்கும் தன்னைச் சேர்ந்தவர்களுக்கு மாகத்தான் என்பதை அவன் ஒருபோதும் மறந்துவிடாம லிருக்கச் செய்வதேயாகும்.
கைவினைத் திறனில் ஒருவன் எவ்வளவுதான் சாதுரியம், திட்ப நுட்பம் என்பவற்றை எய்தினுலும் அதனை விஞ்ஞானக்கல்வி என்று நாம் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள முடியாது. ஒளிக்கதிர் சம்பந்தமான சூத்திரங்கள் (அதாவது உண்மைகள்) சாதாரண மனிதனுடைய அறிவாற்றல்களுக்கு எட்டாதனவாயும், மயக்கந்தருவனவாயும் இருக்கலாம். ஆனுல் அவற்றை வாழ்க்கையினடிப்படைத் தத்துவங்களிலிருந்து பிரித்துவிடமுடியாது. ஆய் கூடம் என்பது வாழ்க்கைக்குப் புறம்பாக, அதனின்றும் முற்றிலும் வேறுபட்டதாக இருந்துவிடுமானுல் விஞ்ஞானம் சமூகத்துக்குப் பயன் தராது; ஆத்ம திருப்தியை அளித்து அதனை ஊக்குவிக்கவும் அதனுல் முடியாது. இன்னும் சொல்வதாகுல் சாதன உபயோகங்களைச் சாஸ்திர ரீதியாக்க் கண்டுபிடிப்பவனெவனுே அவனே விஞ்ஞானி. ജൂഖ(് சுற்றியியங்குவதுதான் மக்கள் சமுதாயம்.
எதனை மனிதவாழ்வு என்று கருதுகிருேமோ அதற்கு இன்றியமை யாதன யாவும் விஞ்ஞானரீதியாக அமைய வேண்டியது அவசியம் எனவே விஞ்ஞானங்களை வாழ்வுக்கலைகளாக மலரச் செய்யக்கூடிய கல்விமுறையொன்று வேண்டுமென நான் கூறும்போது, ஏதோ சாதிக்க முடியாத ஒன்றைச் சாதிக்குமாறு வற்புறுத்துகிறேனென்று கருத இட மில்லை, இன்று நமது பிரதம விருந்தினராக வீற்றிருக்கும் இப்பெரியார், விஞ்ஞானக் கல்வியிலே மிகவும் உன்னதமான ஒரு நிலையெய்தியதோ டமையாது, மக்களுடைய ஆத்மிக உணர்ச்சிகளைத் தூண்ட உபநிஷத உண்மைகளை விஞ்ஞானரீதியாக விளக்கியும், விஞ்ஞான அறிவைப் பெறத் தாய்மொழியே மிகவும் இயல்பாயமைந்த சாதனமென்று எடுத் துக்காட்டியும் வருவதைக் காணும்போது விஞ்ஞானக்கல்வியை வாழ்வுக் கலைகளாக மலரச் செய்ய முடியும் என்ற எனது நம்பிக்கை மேலும் ഖളുഖങ്ങLDL,
விஞ்ஞானத்துக்கும் வாழ்வுக்குமிடையிலே மிக நெருக்கமான ஒரு தொடர்பை ஏற்படுத்துவதே இக்குறிக்கோளே அடைவதற்கு முதற்படி யாக அமைந்துள்ளது என்று கூறலாம். அதற்காகவே எங்களாற்றலுக் கேற்ற அளவில் இத்தகைய தொடர்புகளே எடுத்துக்காட்டக்கூடிய காட் சிப் பொருட்களை அமைத்து, காம் இவ்விந்துக்கல்லூரியின் 75-வது ஆண்டு விழாவைக் கொண்டாடும் முகமாக ஒரு கண்காட்சியையும்
செய்தோம்.

எங்களைப்பற்றி குறிப்பிட இப்போது ஆரம்பிக்கிறேன். இப்போது பரிசீலனை செய்யும் காலத்தைப்பற்றி ஒரு வார்த்தையில் சுருக்கமாகச் சொல்வதானுல் வலுப்படுத்தல்' என்று கூறலாம். முக்கியமாக கல் லூரிப் பிரிவுக்கு இது நன்கு பொருந்தும். உயர்தர, சாதாரண தர வகுப்புகளில் எண்ணிக்கை அதிகரித்துக்கொண்டே வருகிறது. இரண் டாவது ஆண்டும் அதேவகுப்பில் பயிலும் உயர்தர வகுப்புகளில் மேலிவை ஏற்படுத்தக்கூடிய பரீட்சை முடிவுகள் வரத் தாமதமேற்படுவ தால் அவ்வகுப்புகளில் இதனுல் ஏற்படும் வில்லங்கம் உணரப்படுகிறது. எங்கள் கட்டட வசதியோ, தளபாட வசதியோ 25 புதிய மாணவர்களைத் தானும் அனுமதிக்க இடந்தராமையால், ஆண்டுத் தொடக்கத்தில் அனு மதிக்காக பெற்றேர் தரும் நெருக்கடியை சமாளிக்கவேண்டி நேரிட்டது சில குறிப்பிட்ட பாடசாலைகளில் கூடுதலாயுள்ள திறமைமிக்க ஆசிரி யர்கள் பங்கீடுசெய்யப்பட்டால் இப்பெரிய பாடசாலைகளில் இடங்தேடும் பேயாட்டம் குறையுமென எவருக்கும் எண்ணத் தோன்றுகிறது எங்கள் கல்லூரியில் 6-ம் வகுப்பிலிருந்து சிரேஷ்ட உயர்தரவகுப்புவரையுள்ள 1395 மாணவரை பின்வருமாறு பிரிக்கலாம்: கனிஷ்ட பிரிவில் 549. க. பொ. த. கலேப்பிரிவில் 207. க.பொ.த. விஞ்ஞானப் பிரிவில் 635. க.பொ.த. சாதாரணதர ஆரம்பவகுப்புகளில் இடநெருக்கடி உள்ளது. அவ்வகுப்பு களில் சேரவேண்டிய தகைமைகளைப் பூர்த்திசெய்ய முடியாத மாணவர் களாயிருந்தாலும், விஞ்ஞான வகுப்புகளில் சேர கோரிக்கைகள் அதி கரித்துவருகின்றன
கட்டடங்களும் தளபாடங்களும்:
கட்டடங்களைப்பற்றிக் குறிப்பிட அதிகமில்லை. சூருவளியால் சேத மடைந்த விளையாட்டுத்திடல் மண்டபம் இலாகா மான்யத்துடன் மேலதிக இடவசதியுள்ளதாகப் புனர் நிர்மாணம் செய்யப்பட்டது. கல்லூரிக்குள் போக்குவரத்துப் பாதைகளும் சுகாதார ஊழியர் விடுதிகளும் அமைக்கப் பட்டுள்ளன. பழைய மாணவர் சங்கமும், பெற்றேர் ஆசிரிய சங்கமும் விஞ்ஞான கூடத்துக்கு ஒரு மான்ய உதவிபெறப் பெருமுயற்சி செய் துள்ளனர். வேளைக்கு ஏதாவது உருப்படியாகச் செய்யாது விட்டால் அத்திட்டம் பாழாகிவிடும். மிகவும் விலையுயர்ந்த செவி கட்புலச் சாத னங்களை இலாகா வழங்கியுள்ளதோடு இதை வட மாநில செவி-கட்புலக் கேந்திர நிலையமாக்கியுமுள்ளனர். வேகமாய்ப் பயிலவும், கற்றதை நன்கு மனதில் பதிக்கும்படி விளக்கத்தைத் தெளிவுபடுத்தவும் உதவுமென நாம் நம்பும் இந்நிலையத்துக்கு ஒரு பொருத்தமான கட்டடம் தேவைப் படுகிறது. பொருட்காட்சியினுல் சேரும் நிதி இத்தேவையை ஈனவாக் கும் என நம்புகிறுேம்,

(சாதாரண தர) விஞ்ஞானம்:
புதிய பாடத்திட்டத்தை சரியான பாதையில் அடியெடுத்து வைக்கும் முயற்சியெனக் கருதலாம். இதில் உள்ளடக்கம் யாவும் விவரமாகத் தரப் பட்டு அத்தியாவசியப் போதனு உதவிச்சாதனமாகச் செயல்முறைப்பயிற்சி கருதப்பட்டுள்ளது. இத்திட்டத்தை உருவாக்குவதில் போதனைக்கும் சூழலுக்கும் ஒரு உறவை ஏற்படுத்த முயற்சி எடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. மாணவர் குதூகலமாக இதை வரவேற்பார்களென்பதில் சந்தேகமில்லை. ஆயினும் பழைய முறையை வரித்துக்கொண்ட ஆசிரியர்களுக்குச் சிர மம் இருக்கத்தான் செய்யும். உயர்தர, சாதாரண தர வகுப்புகளின் ஆய்வுகூடப் பயிற்சியைப் பிரிக்க முயற் சி எடுக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. சாதாரண தர வகுப்புகளுக்குப் புதிய தேவைகளைப் பூர்த்தி செய்ய நல்ல வசதிகள் நிறைந்த ஆய்கூடமொன்று தேவைப்படுகிறது.

தன்னுடைய கல்லூரிக்கு 15 ஆண்டுகள் விசுவாசமான சேவை செய்த திரு. P. S. குமாரசுவாமி அவர்கள் வித்தியாதரிசியாக நியமனம் பெற்று யூன் மாதத்தில் விலகினுர், விசுவாசமும் திறமையும் மிக்க ஆசிரியர் அவர் வகுப்பறையிலானுலும் சரி, வீளையாட்டு மைதானத்தி லானுலும் சரி கல்லூரியில் வேறெந்த பெரிய நடவடிக்கையானுலும் சரி அவர் தொட்டதெல்லாம் துலங்கிற்று, நெடுங்காலத்திற்கு அவர் இங்கு இல்லாமை உணரப்படுமாயினும் அவருடைய தலைமைதாங்குக் திறமை, முயற்சி ஆகியவற்றின் துணையுடன் உயர்ந்த கல்விப்பதவி பெறுவா ரென நாம் நிச்சயமாக நம்புகின்ருேம் ,
திறமையும், உபயோகமும் நிறைந்த ஆசிரியர்களாகிய திருவாளர் கள் 8. யோசேப், N சோமசுந்தரம் ஆகியோர் இருவருடப் பயிற்சிபெற பலாலி ஆசிரிய பயிற்சிக்கலாசாலையிற் சேர்ந்துள்ளனர். முந்தியவர் இங்கல்லாமையால் மரவேலைப்பாடம் தற்காலிகமாகக் கைவிடப்பட்டுள் ளது. பிந்தியவர் இல்லாமையால் கல்லூரியிற் படைப்பயிற்சி தடைப் பட்டுள்ளது. திரு. S. நமசிவாயம் அவர்கள் பேராதனையில் கல்வி டிப் புளோமா பயின்று திரும்பியுள்ளார். பின்வரும் புதிய ஆசிரியர்களே எங்கள் ஆசிரிய குழாத்திற்கு வரவேற்பதில் மகிழ்ச்சி அடைகிருேம்:

சென்ற 30-12-64 இல் நேர்ந்த, எங்கள் உத்தம ஆசிரியர்களுள் ஒருவரான திரு. K. அருணுசலத்தின் அகால மரணத்தை மிகுந்த வருத் தத்துடன் குறிப்பிடுகின்றேன், அவர் கடமையுணர்ச்சி மிக்க ஒர் ஆசிரி யர், எதையும் புரிந்துகொள்ளும் இயல்புவாய்ந்த நண்பர்; ஒரேயொரு வரிடத்திற் சாதாரணமாகக் காணமுடியாத பல நற்பண்புகள் நிறைந்த, மதிப்புப்பெற்ற அன்பர். இத்தகைய விழாக்களில் தவருது ஈடுபடுபவர். அவருடைய மறைவு எங்கள் மத்தியில் ஒர் இருளைத் தோற்றுவித்து விட்டது, அவரை இழந்து நிற்கும் அன்னுரின் இளம் குடும்பத்திற்கு எம்முடைய அநுதாபம் உரியது.
அட்டாளைச் சேனை ஆசிரியப்பயிற்சிக் கலாசாலைக்கு நூல் நிலையப் பொறுப்பாளராக நியமனம் பெற்று எங்களைவிட்டு விலகிய திரு T. சற் குணராசா அவர்களுக்கு ஒரு சுவாரசியமான மாலை விருந்தில் பிரியா விடை வைத்தோம். எங்களுடைய பழைய மாணவர்களில் ஒருவராகிய திரு. C. கணேசமூர்த்தி அவருக்குப் பதிலாக இப்பொழுது எங்களுக்கு உதவிபுரிகின்றர். இ. போ. ச. இல் நியமனம் பெற்று விலகிய எங்கள் விளையாட்டு மைதான உதவியாளர் திரு. M. சந்திரசேகரத்தின் இடத் தில் திரு M தம்பையா நியமிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளார்.
சமய கலாசாரப் பணிகள் :
திருக்கேதீச்சரத் திருவிழா, நவராத்திரி, மகாசிவராத்திரி, குருபூசை கள் ஆகியவற்றை ஒழுங்கு செய்து இந்து வாலிபர் சங்கம் தன் புனித பணியைத் தொடர்ந்து செய்து வருகின்றது. யாழ்ப்பாணம் மத்திய கல்லூரியுடன் சுந்தரமூர்த்திநாயனுர்பற்றி நடைபெற்ற கருத்தரங்கத்தை விசேடமாகக் குறிப்பிடலாம். பொதுவாகப் போதனு வழிகாட்டியாக அமையும் விசேட வெள்ளிக்கிழமைப் பிரார்த்தனைக் கூட்டத்தினதும் நாளாந்த காலப்பிரார்த்தனைக் கூட்டங்களினதும் திருத்தமான போக்குத் தென்பூட்டுவதாகவுள்ளது. ஆத்மிக நடவடிக்கைகள் முக்கியத்துவம் குறைந்தவையாகத் தோற்றமளித்தாலும் அவை நம்பிக்கையுடன் நிறை வேற்றப்பட்டால் நன்மைகள் நிகழும். வழக்கம்போல் தமிழ்ப்பேரவை காந்தி, பாரதி, திருவள்ளுவர் தினங்களைக் கொண்டாடியது.

வெவ்வேறு சங்கங்களும் கழகங்களும் வழமையான திறமையுடன் செயற்பட்டன. சரித்திர குடிமையியற் சங்கம் வேம்படி மகளிருடன் ஒரு

சரித்திரப்பிரசித்திபெற்ற இடங்களுக்கு ஒரு கல்விச் சுற்றுலா ஒழுங்கு செய்யப்பட்டது. பொருட்காட்சிக்கு உடனடித் தேவையாக வானுெலிக் கழகம் அங்குரார்ப்பணஞ் செய்யப்பட்டது. விவசாயக்கழகம் கல்லூரிக்கு அழகூட்டியது.
விடுதி:
கல்லூரி வாழ்க்கையில் ஒரு முக்கிய பங்கை விடுதிச்சாலை மான வர் தொடர்ந்து வகித்துவருகின்றனர். எங்கள் முன்னேகாள் அதிபர் திருW, M. ஆசைப்பிள்ளை அவர்களைப் பிரதம விருந்தினராக அழைத்து விடுதிச் சாலை H. S. C. மாணவர் சங்கம் வருடாந்த விருந்தை நடாத்தியது. விடுதி மாணவர்தொகை கட்டுப்படுத்தப்பட்டது. நாட்டில் வாழ்க்கைச் செலவு சுழன்றேறிய பொழுதிலும் உணவின் தரம் குன்றது பாதுகாக் கப் பட்டுள்ளது.
இந்து இளைஞன்:
மிகவும் கவர்ச்சிகரமான பிரசுரமாக இது வெளிவந்துகொண்டிருக் கின்றது. இதனுடைய உயர்ந்த தரத்தைக் குன்றது பாதுகாக்க பெற் றேர்கள், பழைய மாணவர்களிட மிருந்து இதற்கு நிதிஉதவி தேவைப் படுகின்றது. 75-ஆவது ஆண்டு நிறைவையொட்டி ஒரு விசேட இதழ் மலர இருக்கின்றது.
நூல் நிலையம்:
வாசிப்புச் செளகரியங்களிலும் இட வசதியிலும் குறிப்பிடத்தக்க சீர்திருத்தம் ஏற்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. நூல்நிலையப் பொறுப்பாளருக்கு உதவியாக ஒரு மாணவ ஆலோசனைச்சபை நிறுவப்பட்டுள்ளது. நூல் நிலையத்தின் தேவைகளுக்குக் கொள்வனவுக் குழு பொறுப்பாகவுள்ளது.
விளேயாட்டுகள்:
இத்துறையில் இவ்வருடம் பிரமாத சாதனை எதுவும் நிலைநாட்டப் படவில்லை. பாடசாலைகள் விளையாட்டுப் போட்டியில் 113 புள்ளிக ளுடன் நாம் மூன்றுவது இடத்தைப் பெற்றேம் 100 மீற்றர் தடை யோட்டத்தில் N. திருஞானசம்பந்தன் ஒரு புதிய சாதனையை நிறுவி ர்ை. இல்ல விளையாட்டுப்போட்டி திரு. D. T. N. செல்வத்துரை தம்பதி களின் தலைமையில் நடைபெற்றது. பசுபதி இல்லம் முதலிடம்பெற்றது. கிறிக்கெற், உதைபந்தாட்டம் ஆகியவற்றில் எங்கள் முதற் கோஷ்டிகள் திறமையாகச் செய்யவில்லை. ஆனுல், கிறிக்கெற்றில் இரண்டாவது

லூரியிடம் தோல்வியுற்றது. உதைபந்தாட்டத்தில் இரண்டாவது கோஷ்டி 6 ஆட்டங்களிற் கலந்து 5 வெற்றிகளும் ஒரு தோல்வியும் அடைந்தது.
படைப்பயிற்சி:
படைபயில் குழுவினர் வழக்கம்போல் வருடாந்தப் பாசறையிற் கலந்துகொண்டனர்.
எங்கள் சாரணர்க்கு இது மிகவும் பெருமைப்படக்கூடிய மகத் தான வருடமாகும். 1964-ஆம் ஆண்டு கூலிக்கு வேலையில் இலங் கையில் மிகவும் அதிகமான தொகையைச் சேகரித்ததற்குச் சேர். அன்று வெள்ளிக்கிண்ணத்தைப் பெற்றர்கள். அகில இலங்கைச் சாரணர் போட் டியில் இரண்டாவது இடத்தைப் பெற்று அதற்கும் சேர் அன்று வெள்ளிக் கிண்ணத்தைப் பெற்றர்கள். எங்கள் சிரேட்ட சாரணர்களில் ஐவர் அலகபாத்தில் நடைபெற்ற நாலாவது இந்திய ஜம்போறியில் இலங்கையின் பிரதிநிதிகளாகக் கலந்துகொண்டார்கள், இவ் வருடம் முதலுதவிப் போட்டியில் 'தினகரன்' வெற்றிக் கிண்ணத்தையும் பெற் ញាយ១. இவ் வருடம் மே மாதம் பத்தாந் திகதி கெளரவ பிரதம ஆணையாளர் திரு K சோமசுந்தரம் அவர்கள் தலைமையில் நடை பெற்ற இவர்களுடைய வருடாங் த விழா பெரு வெற்றியாகும். அவர்களுக்கும் சாரண ஆசிரியர்கள் திரு S. C, முத்துக்குமாரன், திரு. W. சிவசுப்பிரமணியம் ஆகியோர்க்கும் எங்கள் பாராட்டு உரியதாகும்.
மாணவ முதல்வர் சபை:
சிரேட்ட மாணவர் தலைவர் D. ஸ்கந்த குமாருக்கும், அவருடைய சபையைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கட்கும் நிர்வாகத்திற்கு உறுதுணை புரிந்தமைக்கு நன்றி கூறுகிறேன். பொறுப்பும் பலதரப் பிரதிநிதித்துவமும் நிறைந்த தாக இச் சபை உருவாகி வருவது மிகத் திருப்தி தருவதாகும்.
பரீட்சை முடிவுகள்:
வடமாகாண ஆசிரியர் சங்கம் நடாத்திய S, C பரிட்சையில் 54 மாணவர் சித்தி யெய்தினர். அவர்களுள் 21 பேர் முதலாம் பிரி விற் சித்தியெய்தினர். இருவர் பாராட்டுப் பத்திரம் பெற்றனர்.

க. பொ. த. சாதாரண தரம் (ஒகஸ்ட் 64) பரீட்சையில் ஆறு அல்லது அதற்கு மேற்பட்ட பாடங்களில் 35 பேரும் ஐந்து பாடங்க ளில் 13 பேரும் சித்தியெய்தினர்.
க. பொ. த. சாதாரண தரம் (டிசம்பர் 64) ஆறு அல்லது அதற்கு மேற்பட்ட பாடங்களில் 57 பேரும் ஐந்து பாடங்களில் 47 பேரும் சித்தி யெய்தினர்.
க. பொ. த. உயர்தரம் (டிசம்பர் 64) - 47 பேர் பல்கலைக் கழகத்திற்குப் புகுந் தகுதி பெற்றனர் கலைப் பிரிவில் நான்கு பாடங் களில் எட்டுப் பேரும மூன்று பாடங்களில் எட்டுப் பேரும் சித்தி யெய்தினர். பொறியியற் பிரிவில் நான்கு பாடங்களில் பதினுெரு பேரும் மூன்று பாடங்களில் பதினுன்கு பேரும் சித்தியெய்தினர். வைத்தியப் பிரிவில் நான்கு பாடங்களில் ஒருவரும் மூன்று பாடங்க ளில் ஐந்துபேரும் சித்தியெய்தினர்.
1963-ஆம் ஆண்டு பல்கலைக்கழகப் புகுமுகப் பரீட்சையில் வைத் தியப் பிரிவில் R. பாலராசனும், பொறியியற்பிரிவில் R மகாலி வகஜய ரும் பெற்ற திறமைகளுக்குப் பாராட்டுகின் ருேம், இலங்கைப் பலக ைக் கழக B. Sc. பொறியியல் சிறப்புநிலை முதற்பகுதியில் முதல் வகுப்புப் பெற்ற S. செல்வலிங்கத்தையும் 8. திருவருட்செல்வத்தையும் பாராட்டு கின்றுேம்,
இப் பரீட்சைகள் சம்பந்தமான எங்கள் சொந்த அனுபவம் இரு வினுக்களை உசாவும்படி தூண்டுகின்றது. எங்கள் மாணவர்களின் வருங்காலத்தை நிர்ணயிக்கும் இப் பரீட்சைகளின் தரத்தை உறுதிப் படுத்த நாம் என்ன செய்கிறுேம்? பேராதனைக் கலைப் பிரிவு மாணவர் கள் அதிகரித்து வருவதற்குத் தற்காலிக வழிவகைகள் கணடு பிடிப்ப தும் ஆண்டுக் கணக்காக நிரம்பி வழிந்துகொண்டிருக்கும் ஒரே பல் கலைக் கழகத்திற்கு விஞ்ஞான மாணவர் தெரிவைக் கட்டுப்படுத்துவதும்

பாடசாலைகள் சமூக நிறுவனங்களாகும். வெற்றிடத்தில் அவை நிலைத்துநிற்பதில்லை. எந்தச் சமூகத்தின் குழந்தைகளை அவை பயிற்று கின்றனவோ அவை அதன் தேவைகளைப் பூர்த்தி செய்யவும் வேண்டும். ஆசைகளைப் பிரதிபலிக்கவும் வேண்டும். இது எங்கள் 75 ஆவது ஆண்டு நிறைவுக்கு மிகவுக் தொடர்பான அமைதிதரும் சிந்தனையாகும். பயிற் றக்கூடிய இரு பிரதான மனப்பாங்குகளைப்பற்றி நாங்கள் எங்களையே தெளிவுபடுத்திக்கொள்ள வேண்டும். ஒன்று, மரபுக்கு நாம் அளிக்கும் மதிப்பு; இரண்டு, முன்னேற்றத்தைக் கண்டு நாம் கொள்ளும் வியப்பு. இந்த இரு தன்மைகளும் தனித்தோ அளவுக்கு மீறியோ இடம்பெற்ருல் மிகவும் ஆபத்தானதாகும் இந்த இரண்டிற்கும் இடையில் ஒரு சமநிலை எய்துதல் மிகவும் விரும்பத்தககது. சிலவேளை மிகவும் சிரமமானது. கடவுளின் பெயரால், (குறிப்பாக)இங்கிலையை அடைவதற்குத்தான் யாழ்ப் பாணம் இந்துக்கல்லூரியில் நாம் முயன்றுகொண்டிருக்கின்றுேம்

Professor A. W. Mailivaganam, Mrs. W. Arumugam, La dies and Gentlemen,
It is both a pleasure and a privilege for us at Jaffna Hindu to welcome you all once again to our annual Prize-Giving. The pleasure and the privilege are all the greater this year when our College completes three quarters of a century of service and success.
We deem it a great honour to have Professor Mailvaganam with us this evening as our Chief Guest. In fact, we were looking forward to his visit in an earlier year, but in human affairs it is not always possible to get for the programme the personality that fits it best. Nevertheless, since expectation lends enthusiasm to the occasion, it is with more than normal pleasure that we welcome you, Sir, to this our annual academic function.
We greet you as one of the most learned sons of Sri Lanka. Proceeding all the way from Secondary school to the Cavendish Laboratories at Cambridge on an unbroken series of scholarships - veritably the high road of free education as open at that time only to those high in intellect - you showed a brilliance rarely equalled in academic achievement by other Ceylonese. Were it not for the insistent demand of the young University College of Ceylon where you were needed as a Lecturer of Physics you could have extended your association with Cambridge to obtain a Fellowship. Then as Professor of Physics, Dean of the Faculty of Science and on occasions as acting Vice-Chancellor you have been one of the architects without whose contribution the University of Ceylon would not be the lofty tower of light and learning that it is today.
But what gratifies us even more is the tact that

vent your coming down to the laboratory for research and reflection. That this research, particularly on cosmic rays, should be reflected in international Scientific journals is a matter for nationl pride. And equally free of donnish pride and prejudice has been your attitude to the role of Science in the World outside the Uni. versity. Without pontificating from prize-day platforms on the need to go back to the land, you have shown rare enthusiasm as a practical farmer in the Wanni; and, far from insisting on the indispensability of English if one is to imbibe instruction in the Sciences, you have shown by your own reading and writing that Tamil can be as good a medium for the modern sciences as it has been for the ancient shastras.
Hence, it is a pleasure indeed that we are able to honour you in this way and present you to our
boys as the model of a man worthy of emulation at all times.
To Mrs. Arumugam we are much obliged for accepting our invitation and consenting to give away the prizes. When one remembers how the Jaffna Hindu Ladies' College came into being and how in the years that have followed it has been associated, if not Confused, with Jaffna Hindu, it is natural indeed for the Principal of the ladies' institution to grace this occasion if only to symbolise the unity of opposites, the Compatibility of contradiction so sacred to Hindus in the Arthanaireeswaran.
On such an oocasion it would not, I think, be out of place if I went back over the years and attempted to trace, if only in broad outline, the history of our College. spirite di men founded this College to foster modern education in a Hindu atmosphere.
Progress in the early years, in the face of cornpetition offered by schools of longer standing and of greater acceptance to the powers that were, was slow and difficult. But since ideas and ideals have a nomentum of their own Jaffna Hindu moved down the years to a period when the ideals for which it had been founded began to assert themselves on a national scale and at governmental level.
Then, with the inauguration of the free education scheme which Jaffna Hindu accepted as an essential stage in Ceylon's democratic evolution, our College began to make significant progress, quantitatively in the number on roll and qualitatively in the successes that it achieved. Later, when assisted schools were absorbed into the state system of education, Jaffna Hindu did not find itself out of step. It was not afraid that it would lose its identity in what others feared would be an amorphpus, unattractive mass. Nor again was it reluctant in the switch-over to Swabhasa even for science in the higher forms; for, to Jaffna Hindu standing on its popular, national traditions, this was yet another step to spreading education to all in all fields of study.
It is our belief that, in the midst of all these changes, Jaffna Hindu College has not departed from the l'edals for which that small but worthy band of benefactors founded it. Rather, these changes with which our College has never found itself out of tune have helped it to interpret the ideals of the founders against A background broader if not brighter.
Nevertheless, the course the future holds for us or rather the course that we might set ourselves at Jaffna

Hindu is not so clearly charted as to leave us no cause for thought or discussion. In an age when science has become so integral a part of everyday life it would be foolhardy to maintain the water tight division of education into the humanities on the one hand and the sciences on the other. Such division has been frustrating if not futile. Hence, a reorganisation of education is urgently needed.
It fond parents and their charges were consulted on this matter they would not hesitate to suddest science for all, with the humanities allowed to survive as best they can. Such a solution would eliminate the segregation that so hampers present-day education. But as a solution it is too simple to solve a problem that is so complex. The solution, if I may venture to suggest one, is not the mere combination of the sciences and the humanities in the curriculum. This would be only plastic surgery in education. What may be attempted, and what we at Jaffna Hindu think is worth attempting, is the humanizing of the Sciences so that in adapting himself to matter or even in mastering it man does not forget what matters even more - his fellow man and his own inner self.
A mastery of tricks and techniques, however inpressive in itself, can no longer pass muster as education in the Sciences. The formulas of light, no matter how intricate and incomprehensible to the layman, cannot be divorced from the fundamentals of life. In a world where the laboratory is hermetically sealed from life, science can have neither a society to serve nor a soul to inspire it. In other words, man as the inventor is the centre of Science; men as citizens are its circumference.
Hence, with what is human, being so essential to what is scientific, it is not, I think, too exacting to

demand of an educational System that it orient itself to the task of humanizing the sciences. And with the example set by our Chief Guest who, with so brilliant a Career in Science, has turned to the Upanishads for inspiration and to the Swabhasa as the most natural medium for scientific communication, may I reinforce myself in the hope that the sciences can be humanized?
A first step in achieving this aim has perforce to be to bring science into closer contact with the people. That is one reason why we at Jaffna Hindu thought it best to celebrate the 75th Anniversary with an exhibition that, in its own small way, could re-establish the vital connection between science and the people.
But exhibitions in themselves can achieve little unless the factors for teaching science staff, class rocms and equipment - are developed to keep pace with the drowth of the Country's needs And therein lies our createst need of the moment, the building and completion of the science block for which the foundations were laid by the Hindu College Board of Directors even before the take-over,
I now turn to report on ourselves. If I were to sum up the period under review with one word it would be "consolidation", particularly for the ColleOurselves giate section. Our numbers in the O. L. and A. L. classes keep on swelling and the pressure is particularly felt in the A. L. classes as the exam. results that slim the repetition classes are unduly delayed. Since our buildings and equipment cannot handle an increase of even 25 admissions, we had to resist parental pressure for admission at the beginning of the year. One begins to feel that if the high concentration of teaching strength in a few select Schools were spread more widely it would minimise this mad scramble for places in the bigger Schools. The total number of

students on roll from Std. 6 to the Senior A. L. is 1395 classified as follows: 549 in the Junior Secondary, 2O7 in the Senior Arts and 639 in Senior Science. Our PreG. C. E. (OIL) classes are overcrowded and the demand for science continues to increase irrespective of the ability of students to cope with its requirements,
There is little to report on buildings except that
the pavilion which was damaged by the cyclone was rebuilt on the grant from the
Building and Equipment Dept. to provide greater accom
modation; roads have been laid in both the campuses and scavangers' quarters have been put up. The O. B. A. and the P. T. A have been making concerted attempts to win a building grant for the ground floor of the proposed Science Block and unless something is done in time the project would go to waste The Dept. has provided the College with costly equipment for Audio - Visual Aid and has made this the Northern Region Audio - Visual Centre. We need a suitable building for this Centre which we trust will quicken learning and enhance understanding so that what is learnt is better remembered. We are confident that the proceeds of the Exhibition will make this project a reality,
The new schemes of work can be considered a step in the right direction. The contents are set out in great detail and practical work in regarded Science for 0. L. as an essential part in teaching aid, and in spelling out the schemes attempts have been made to relate the work to the local environment. There is little di oubt that our students will respond to them delightfully but the diffi. culty will be with the teachers wedded to the old order. Some attempt has been made to separate laboratory work for the A. L. and O. L. classes and the latter need a better equipped laboratory to meet the new needs.

Mr. P. S. Cumaraswamy who counts about 15 years of devoted service to his Alma Mater left us in June to join the Inspectorate. A loyal and able teaStaff cher, he adorned everything that he touchedwhether it be in the classroom or playing field or any other major activity at school. While his absence Will be felt for a long time to come, we are confident that with his powers of initiative and leadership he Will rise to higher educational positions.
Mr. B. Joseph and Mr. N. Somasundaram, both skilful and useful teachers, entered the Palaly Secondary Training College for a two - year course. We had to drop Woodwork for a time on account of the former's absence and that of the latter is a handicap to cadeting at College. Mr. S. Namasivayam has returned after completing his Diploma in Education at Peradeniya. We are happy to welcome ths following new teachers to our staff: Mr. M. Rasadurai, Eng. Trd, Mr. II. S. Paramanantham, list Class Eng. Trd., and Mr. K. Mahalingasivan, B. A. (Cey. ).
It is with deep sorrow that I have to record the untinely demise on the 30th of December 1964 of Mr. K. Arunasalam one of our devoted teachers. He was a conscientious teacher, an understanding friend and a valued colleague who possessed qualities that are rarely blended in one and the same person. He was too familiar a figure to be missed at such a function as this. His passing away has left a deep void in our ranks and our sympathies go to his young family that Will miss him most.
We bade farewell to Mr. T. Satkunarajah, our Librarian, at an interesting evening party when he left us to join the Addalaichenai Training College as Librarian. Mr. C. Ganeshamoorthy, one of our Old Boys, is helping us out at the moment. Mr. M. Sandrasagaram,

our Ground Boy, who resigned to take up an appointment in the C. T. B. was succeeded by Mr. M. Thambiah.
The Y. M. H. A. continued its good work by organizing Guru Poojas, Maha Sivarathiri, Navarathiri and
Thiruketheeswaram Festivals. Religious and Cultural Special mention must be made Activities of the Seminar on 'St. Suntha
rar” with the Jaffna Central College. It is hearte ning to note the improved tone oi the daily morning assembly and special Friday morning assembly which has generally been instructive, Even though spiritual activity often looks unimportant, if it is carried out with faith, things are bound to improve. The Tamil Peravai as usual celebrated Gandhi Day, Bharathi Day and Thiruvalluvar Day.
The various societies and clubs carried on their activities with normal efficiency. The Historical Asso. ciation had a debate with Vembadi Girls and Societies the Science Association successfully staged a play to collect funds for the Educational Exhibition, An educational tour was organized to places of historical interest in the island. The Radio Club was formed for the immediate purpose of producing exhibits for the Exhibition. The Garden Club has made itself felt by keeping the campus colourful.
The hostellers continue to play an important role in the life of the College The H. S. C. Hostellers Union had their annual dinner with Mr. W. M. Hostel Asaipillai, our former Principal, as their Chief Guest. Numbers have been kept down but the quality of food was not allowed to suffer in spite of the spiralling cost of living in the country.

There was marked improvement in accommodation and reading facilities. A student Advisory Library Committee has been formed to assist the Librarian. The Purchasing Committee is in charge of additions to the Library.
This year has not seen any spectacular achievements in this field. We obtained the third place in the Inter-Schools Athletic Meet obtaining ll3 Sport points, N. Thirugnanasambanthan created a new record in the 100 met ces hurdles. The Inter - House Meet was held under the patronage of Mr. and Mrs. D. J. N. Selvadurai and Pasupathy House became champions. Our First Teams in cricket and soccer did not fare well, but the Second Team in cricket lost the championship to Mahajana only after some thrilling play. The Second Team in soccer played six matches, winning five and losing one.
Our Cadets attended the Annual Camp.
Our Scouts had another bumper year to boast of. They annexed the Sir Andrew Silver Bowl for the highest amount Collected in the Island during Scouting the Chips-for-Jobs week in 1964 and the Sir Andrew Silver Bowl for being the runners-up in the All Island Scout Competition. Five of the Senior Scouts represented Ceylon at the 4th All India Jamboree held at Allahabad. They won the Thinakaran Challenge Cup in the First Aid Competition this year. Their Field Day held on 19th May this year under the patronage of the Hony. Chief Commissioner Mr. K. Soma. undaram was a great success. We congratulate them

and the Scout Masters Mr. S. C. Muttucumaran and Mr. V. Sivasubramaniam.
I should like to thank the Senior Prefect D Skandakumar and his colleagues for The Prefects' Council their loyal assistance to the administration. At is gratifying to note that the Council is developing into a representative and responsible body.
54 students passed the J. S. C. Examination conducted by the N. P. T. A., with Examination Results 21 in the 1st Division. Two of them obtained Merit Certificates. G. C. E. (OL ) August 1964 - 35 passed in six or more subjects and l3 in five subjects. G. C. E. ( O. L.) December 1964 - 57 passed in six or more subjects and 47 passed in five subjects.
G. C. E. (A. L.) December 1964 - 47 qualified for admission to the Ceylon University. In Arts, 8 passed in 4 subjects and 8 passed in three subjects. In Engineering ill passed in four subjects and 14 passed in three subjects. In Medicine one passed in four Subjects and five passed in three subjects.
We congratulate R. Balarajah and R. Mahalinga Iyer on winning a scholarship in Medicine and an Exhibition in Engineering respectively at the Ceylon University Entrance Examination of 1963. We also Congratulate S. Selvalingam and S. Thiruvarudchelvam on their first Class Honours in the B. Sc. Engineering Part I of the Ceylon University.
Our own experience of these examinations tempts us to ask two questions: What are we doing to ensure creater validity for these examinations that decide the future of our students P Are We justified in providing mere ad hoc expedients to the Overflow of Arts students at Peradeniya and in restricting the intake of Science

students at our only University, a University which has been bursting at the seams for years?
The Welfare Board and the P. T. A. are functioning effectively. The O B. A. is celebrating The O. B. A. its Diamond Jubilee on the 18th of this month with Sir Albert Peries, the Speaker of the House of Representatives as the Chief Guest.
We record with deep recret the death of a veteran educationist Mr. V. Veerasingham, Emeritus Principal, Manipay Hindu College, who was for some years on our staff. Mr. S. Ponnampalam's demise has removed from our midst an active Alumnus who did invaluable Service in the building operations of recent years.
Schools are social institutions. They do not exist in a vacuum. They must Serve the needs and reflect the wishes of the Societies whose children Conclusion they are educating. This is a sobering thought so relevant to our 75th Anniversary. Let us make ourselves clear on the two main attitudes which can be taught at School: one is that of respect for tradition and the other is that of admiration for progress. Either of these attitudes by itself, or carried to an extreme, Can be dan gerous. A balancing of the two is most desirable and perhaps most difficult; and that in God's name, is precisely what we at Jaffna Hindu are
Striving for.
May I close by offering my sincere thanks to the Assistant Director of Education, Mr. S. Thanikasalam, and his assistants for their unfailing support and to all members of the staff-teaching and non-teaching-for their loyalty and co-operation.
