உயர் திரு தணிகாசலம் அவர்களே, திருமதி தணிகாசலம் அவர் களே, தாய்மாரே, பெரியோரே,
- உங்களனைவரையும் நிறைந்த மனதோடு நல்வரவுகூறி இப் பரி சளிப்பு விழாவில் வரவேற்கக் கிடைத்த சந்தர்ப்பத்தைப் பெரும் பேருகக் கருதுகிறேன்.
எங்கள் கல்லூரியோடு அண்மைக்காலத்திலே மிக நெருங்கிய தொடர்புகொண்டுள்ளவர் திரு. தணிகாசலமவர்கள். முக்கியமாகச் சென்ற ஆண்டு நடந்த எழுபத்தைந்தாவது ஆண்டு விழாவுடன் அவர் நம்மோடு ஒருவராகவே உறவுகொண்டுவிட்டார். ஆனுல் இன்று அவர் இவ்வடமாநில வித்தியாதிபதியாகி இத்தகைய ஒரு கல்விக் கழகப் பரிசளிப்பு விழாவுக்குத் தலைமைதாங்கும் முதல் சந்தர்ப்பம் நமது கல் லூரிக்கே கிடைத்தமையால் நாம் பெரிதும் மகிழ்ச்சியடைகிறேம்.
ஐய, தங்களுக்கு இவ்வுயர்பதவி கிடைத்ததினுல் தங்களோடு காலத்தாலும் இடத்தாலும் மிக நெருங்கிய உறவுகொண்டுள்ள நாம் அடையும் மகிழ்ச்சிக்கு எல்லையில்லை. இது வெறும் உபசாரமன்று நம்முள்ளத்தில் பொங்கும் களிபேருவகையின் பிரதிபலிப்பேயாகும் உதவி வித்தியாதிபதியாயிருந்து தாங்கள் ஆற்றிய அரிய சேவையின் பயனுகவே மேலும் அதிகமான பொறுப்புக்கள் தங்களை நாடி வந்துள் ளன. காலவசத்தினுல் இப்பதவி தங்களுக்குக் கிடைதததன்று உரிமையாலேயே கிடைத்துள்ளது என்பதில் ஐயமில்லை.
அகத்திலுறும் மகிழ்ச்சி ஒருபுறமிருக்க, உங்கள்மீது நாம் கொண் டுள்ள நம்பிக்கையும் உறுதியானது. வெள்ளையறிக்கையின் பிரகாரம் அதிகாரத்தைப் பன்முகப்படுத்தும் இவ்விஷயத்திலே பழைய முறையில் பரந்த அனுபவமும் நிறைந்த ஆற்றலும் பெற்றுள்ள தங்களைப்போன்ற ஒருவரே காரியங்களைத் திறம்பட நிர்வகிக்க முடியும் என்று வித்தியா பகுதியினர் நம்புவதுபோலவே நாமும் உறுதியாக நம்புகிறேம் நிர் வாகத்தின் பல்வேறு துறைகளிலும் நிறைந்த அநுபவம்பெற்ற தங்க ளால் இப்பதவி பெருமையடைகிறதென்று கூறவேண்டுமேயன்றி பதவி தங்களுக்குப் பெருமையைத் தந்துள்ளது என்று கூறுவதில் அர்த்தமில்லை. இயற்கையிலேயே தங்களிடம் அமைந்துள்ள செயல் திறன், தங்களுடைய கடமை உணர்ச்சியின் காரணமாக மேலும் விளக்க

முற்றுப் பொது நிர்வாகத்தின் உயர்ந்த நிலையெய்தி நமது ஈழத்திரு நாட்டின் எதிர்காலச் சிறப்புக்கோர் அணிகலனுய் விளங்கவேண்டு மென்று விழைகின்றேம்.
கல்வித்துறையிலே கல்விபோதிக்கும் பணியில் ஈடுபட்டுள்ள நாம், அப்பணியிலேயே ஈடுபட்டிருந்து- அதாவது கல்லூரியொன்றுக் கதிய
ராகப் பணியாற்றி இப்பொழுது நிர்வாகப்பதவி வகித்துவரும் ஒரு
பெரியார் என்ற முறையிலே தங்களை வரவேற்கக் கிடைத்தமைக்காக
வும் நாம் மகிழ்ச்சியடைகிறேம்
அதுமாத்திரமன்றி முப்பதாண்டுகளுக்கு முன் இவ்வடமாநிலத்தின்
கல்விப்பகுதித்தலைவராயிருந்த தங்கள் சிறிய தகப்பனுர், பேரறிஞர், திரு
வாளர் K S. அருணந்தி அவர்களும் இதுபோன்ற நமது பரிசளிப்பு விழா ஒன்றிலே பிரதம விருந்தினராகக் கலந்துகொண்டு ஆற்றிய அரிய சொற்
பொழிவு இன்றும் நமது கல்லூரி ஏடுகளில் பொன்னேபோற் பாது காக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. அப்பெரியாருடைய அடிச்சுவட்டைப் பின்பற்றி இன்று தாங்களும் எங்கள் பிரதம விருந்தினராக வந்திருக்கிறீர்கள் என் பதுதான் எங்கள் மகிழ்ச்சிக்கெல்லாம் சிகரமா யமைந்துள்ளது,
காலஞ்சென்ற நமது மதிப்பிற்குரிய அதிபர் உயர்திரு. A குமார சாமி அவர்களும் அவர்தம் உதவியாசிரியர்களும் மாணவர்களும் அவர்க ளுடைய காலத்திலே கல்விப்பகுதியில் உயர்ந்த பதவி வகித்துவந்த அப்பெரியாரை எவ்வாறு கெளரவித்து மகிழ்ந்தனரோ அவ்வாறே தங் களையும் கெளரவித்து மகிழக்கூடிய பேறு நமக்கின்று கிடைத்திருக்கிறது.
திருமதி தணிகாசலம் அவர்களே, உங்களுக்கும் நாம் பெரிதும் நன்றிக்கடன்பட்டவர்களா யிருக்கின்ருேம், பரிசில்களை வழங்குவது உடலுக்கும் உள்ளத்துக்கும் சோர்வைத்தரும் பணியேதான். அதிலும் இப்பொழுது உங்கள் உடல்நிலையை உத்தேசித்தால் அது இன்னும் களைப்பான தொருபணியே என்பதிலையமில்லை. ஆயினும் அம்ம, ஒரு சில ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பும் நமது கல்லூரியில் இத்தகைய பணி யொன்றை மனமுவந்து ஆற்றியிருக்கிறீர்கள். இன்றும் நமது அழைப் பிற் கிணங்கி இப் பரிசளிப்பு விழாச் சிறக்க நமது மத்தியில் வீற்றிருக் கிறீர்கள். கருணை மிகுந்த தங்கள் பண்பு மேன்மேலும் உயர்ந்து தங்கள் பர்த்தாவின் நிர்வாகம் சிறந்தோங்கத் தோன்றத்துணையாயிருக்க வேண்டுமென்று இறைவனை வழுத்துகிறேம்.
நிர்வாகத்தைப் பன்முகப்படுத்தும் விஷயம் நடைமுறைக்கு வந் துள்ள இப்போது, பிரதம நிர்வாக அதிகாரியும் நமது மத்தியில் வீற்றிருக்கும் இவ்வரிய சந்தர்ப்பத்தில் நமது யாழ்ப்பாண் இந்துக்கல்லூரி

யின் வேலைத் திட்டங்களில் அது வெளிப்படையாகவும் மறைமுகமா கவும் எத்தகைய விளைவுகளை ஏற்படுத்தி யுள்ள தென்பதைப்பற்றிக் குறிப்பிடாவிட்டால் நான் என் கடமையினின்றும் தவறியவனுவேன்.
கல்விப் பணிகள் மிக வேகமாக அதிகரித்துவிட்டன வாகையால் முன்னேக்காலத்துக்குப் போதுமான அளவினதாக வகுத்துக்கொள்ளப்பட் டிருந்த மத்திய நிர்வாகம் இந்தக்காலத்துத் தேவைகளுக்கு ஈடு கொடுக் கக்கூடிய நிலையில் இல்லை. திட்டங்களை வகுக்கவும் நெருங்கிய இணைப்பு முறைகளைக் கையாளவும் மத்திய நிர்வாகம் வாய்ப்புடையதுதானெனி ம்ை மாகாணத்து மக்களின் விருப்பு வெறுப்புக்களையும் மாநிலத்துத் தேவைகளையும் உணர்ந்து அநுசரித்து நடப்பதென்பது தொலை தூரத்தி லுள்ள கொழும்புக் காரியாலயத்துக்கு முடியாத ஒரு காரியமாகும்.
எனவே நிர்வாகத்தில் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டிருக்கும் பன்முகப்படுத் தல் என்ற இந்த மாற்றம் உரிய காலத்திலேயே புகுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது என்று கூறலாம்.
இந்துக்கல்லூரியைச் சேர்ந்த நாங்கள் - அதாவது இலவசக்கல்வி யென்றும், சுயமொழியில் போதனை என்றும், தேசீய முறையிலான பாட சாலை அமைப்பு என்றும் அவ்வப்போது கல்வித்துறையில் தோன்றிய சீர்திருத்தங்களை ஏற்று அவற்றேடினேந்து முன்னேறிய காங்கள்-இந்த மாற்றத்தையும் கல்வித்துறையிலே சனநாயகரீதியாயமைந்த பரிணும வளர்ச்சியில் மற்றுமொரு நியாயபூர்வமான அபிவிருத்தியென்றே வரவேற் கிருேம். நாமெல்லாம் இத்தகைய பரிணும வளர்ச்சியெய்துவதற்கு நமது கல்லூரியைப்போல எத்தனையோ பல பாடசாலைகள் உதவியிருக்கும் போது-அதிலும் அகில இலங்கைப் பாடசாலை என்ற அந்தஸ்தைப் பெற் றுள்ள நாம் - இந்த மாற்றத்தைத் தடைசெய்ய முயல்வதே தற்கொலைக் கொப்பாகுமென்றல் அதனை எதிர்க்க முற்படுவது எத்தகைய விபரீத Ef Tc3D.
இதிலிருந்து, மாற்றங்களெல்லாம் நன்மை தருவனவே என நாம் சொல்வதாகக் கருதிவிடலாகாது எந்த ஒரு கல்வியும் பூரணமடைவ தற்குப் பலாபலன்களைப் பகுத்தறியும் விவேகம் இருக்கவேண்டியது அவசியமாகும். மாற்றம் ஒன்று புகுத்தப்படும்போது அதனுடைய் ஒவ்வோரம்சத்திலும் இயற்கையாயமைந்த சிறப்பியல்புகளை ஆராய வேண்டியதும் அவ்விவேகத்தின்பற்பட்டதேயாகும். எட்டாம் வகுப் பிலேயே கட்டாயமாகத் தரம் பிரிக்கப்படவேண்டுமென்று வெள்ளை யறிக்கையில் பெரிதாகப் பேசப்படுவதும் இத்தகையதோராய்ச்சிக்குட் பட்ட விஷயமாகும். போதனுமுறைகளில் துறைபோகிய பெரியார் பலர்

நீண்டகாலமாக இந்த விஷயத்தில் தமக்குள்ளேயே மாறுபாடான கொள்க்ை களை உடையவராயிருந்து வருகின்றனர், இங்ஙனமாக் இழுபட்டுக் கொண்டுவரும் இச்சொற்போராட்டத்திலே வாதிகளும் பிரதிவாதிகளு மாக எத்தனையோ வாசாலகமாகப் பேசிவந்திருக்கும்போது ஏதாவ்து ஒரு பக்கத்துக்காக நியாயம் பேசாமல் வெறுமனே அவர்களுடைய விரிவுரை களையும், எதிர் விரிவுரைகளையும் எடுத்து ஒருவர் கூறப்புகுவது அத் துணைப் பயன்தருவதொரு செயலாகாது. இன்னும் அதனேப்பற்றி இப்பொழுதே இந்த இடத்திலேயே சுருக்கமாகவும் முடிவாகவும் ஒரு தீர்ப்பு வழங்குவதாகவே வைத்துக்கொண்டாலும் பெற்றராசிரிய சங்கம், பாராளுமன்றம், (செனேட்) மேல்சபை என்று முடிவான தீர்ப்பை வழங்க இருக்கும் நிறுவனங்களுடைய உயர்ந்த தீர்ப்புக்கு முன்னே அது நிற்க முடியாது போய்விடக்கூடுமல்லவா?
முடிவைக் கூறுவதில் நாம் காட்டும் இந்தத்தயக்கம் நமது தன்னம் பிக்கையின்மையை அல்லது தோல்வியை வெளிப்படுத்துமென்ருல், யாழ்ப்பாண இந்துக்கல்லூரி தன்னம்பிக்கையற்றது, தோல்வி தன் டது என்று கூறமுடியாத மற்றெரு விஷயத்தைப்பற்றி - அதாவது இன்று நமது தேசீய முன்னேற்றத்துக்கு மிக இன்றியமையாத விஞ் ஞான பாடங்களைப் போதிக்கும் விஷயத்தைப்பற்றிக் கூறவிரும்புகிறேன். நமது சமூகத்துக்கு இந்தவகையில் ஏதோ தன்னுலான பணியைத் செய்துவருகின்ற இந்துக்கல்லூரிக்கு இன்னும் திறமையாக இப்பணி யைச் செய்யும் ஆற்றல் உண்டு என்பதையும் நான் இங்கே கூறிவைக்க விரும்புகிறேன். ஆனல் கீழ்மாடி மட்டத்தளவிலாயினும் கட்டி முடிப்ப தென்று திட்டமிடப்பட்டுள்ள நமது விஞ்ஞான கூடத்துக்கு வேண்டிய கட்டடவசதியும் உபகரணவசதியும் நமக்குக்கிடைக்க வேண்டும். எங்கள் நலனில் எப்பொழுதுமே சிரத்தைகொண்டுள்ள நமது கல்வி அதிகாரி அவர்களுடைய ஆதரவு நமக்கு என்றும் இருப்பதல்ை நமது ஆடு லாம் கனவாகும் அந்த நாளும் வெகு தூரத்திலில்லை என்று நம்புவோ

இவ்வறிக்கை ஆராயும் காலம் எங்களுக்கு சமய, கலாசாரப்பணி கள், விளையாட்டுகள், படிப்பு ஆகிய பல துறைகளிலும் வளம் கொழித்த காலம் எனலாம். பல்கலைக்கழக பிரவேசத்தில் நாம் ஈட் டிய அகில இலங்கையிலும் சிறந்த சாதனையை விசேஷமாய்க் குறிப் பிடவேண்டும். சென்ற மார்கழிமாதத்தில் சாதாரணதர, உயர்தர பரீட் சைகளில் படுகொலை நிகழ்ந்ததையொட்டி, திடீரென இவ்வாண்டு ஏற்பட்ட தர வீழ்ச்சியை விளக்க, தாங்கள் கொண்டுள்ள கருத்தை Rஜலநாட்ட

புள்ளி விபரங்கள் சேகரிப்போருக்கு எங்கள் சாதனை தலையிடியாயுள் துெ. பல்கலைக்கழக புகுமுக வகுப்புகள் நிறுவப்பட்டதிலிருந்து கூடு தலான விஞ்ஞானக் கல்வி தேவை என்ற பெற்றேரின் கோரிக்கை களுக்கு ஈடுசெய்ய பெரிய கல்லூரிகள் யாவும் எங்களைப்போல முனைந்துள்ளன. இப்பரீட்சைகளின் முடிவகளில் எங்கள் கீர்த்தியும் வெற்றியும் பெரும்பாலும் தங்கியிருப்பதனுல் இவ்வகுப்புகளின் தேவை களைப் பூர்த்திசெய்ய எங்களாலான முயற்சிகளைச் செய்திருக்கிறேம். எங்கள் சாதனைகள் ஒருபுறமிருக்க, ஒரு பாடசாலையிலுள்ள மாணவர் களில் வெகுசிலரே இப்பரீட்சைகளில் தேவையான தரத்தை யடைகி ருர்கள். வழியிலே நழுவிவிழும் பெருந்தொகையானுேருக்கு பள்ளிப் படிப்பை பயனுள்ளதாக ஆக்க வழிவகைகள் விரைவில் கண்டுபிடிக்கப் பட வேண்டும். இது மிகவும் சிக்கலான ஒரு சங்கதி நிலைமையை எளி மைப்படுத்தி, ஒருவர்மீது பழியைச் சுமத்த முயன்றல் வீண் பழிக்கு பலர் இரையாவார்கள். அரிவரிவகுப்பிலிருந்து பல்கலைக்கழகம்வரை கல்விவட்டாரங்களில் பொறுப்பைத் தட்டிக்கழிப்பது பொதுவான ஒரு பொழுதுபோக்காயிருந்து வருகிறது. இறுதியாக வீட்டுச்சூழலே காரண மென முடிவுகட்டப்படுகிறது, கல்வி உலகின் மேதைகள் சமாளிக்க வேண்டிய இப்பிரச்சினையை இப்படி அணுகுவது வீணுனதாகும்.
மாணவர் தொகை :
இப்பொழுதுள்ள 1227 மாணவர்கள் பின்வரும் பிரிவுகளில் அடங் குவர் கனிஷ்டபிரிவு 483, சிரேஷ்ட கலைப்பிரிவு 178; சிரேஷ்ட விஞ்ஞானப்பிரிவு 566. மாணவரை அனுமதிப்பதை ஓரளவு கட்டுப் படுத்திவந்திருக்கிறுேம் வருகிற ஆண்டுக்கு வந்துள்ள விண்ணப்பங் களை நோக்குங்கால், இனியும் அப்படிச் செய்வது பகீரதப்பிரயத்தனமா யிருக்குமென்று தோன்றுகிறது. இப்பிரச்சினை குறிப்பாக இடவசதிக் குறைவும் ஆசிரியர் பற்ருக்குறையுமாகும்.

வடமாகாண ஆசிரியர் சங்கம் கார்த்திகை, 65 இல் நடாத்திய க. பா. த, ப, பரீட்சையில் 72 மாணவர் சித்தியெய்தினர். அவர்களில் 31 பேர் முதல்தர சித்தியடைந்தனர். இருவர் பாராட்டுப் பத்திரங்க ளும், அவர்களில் ஒருவர் எண்கணிதம், குடியியல் ஆகிய பாடங்க ளுக்கான பரிசையும் பெற்றனர்.

ஆவணி 65 பரீட்சையில் 29 மாணவர் ஆறு அல்லது மேற்பட்ட பாடங்களிலும் 16 பேர் ஐந்து பாடங்களிலும் சித்திபெற்றனர். மார் கழி 65 இல் 70 மாணவர் ஆறு அல்லது மேற்பட்ட பாடங்களிலும், 32 பேர் ஐந்து பாடங்களிலும் சித்திபெற்றனர்.
க, பொ, த ப (உ/த ) மார்கழி 64 :
இலங்கைப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் புக விண்ணப்பித்த 47 மான வர்களில் 35 பேர் இடம்பெற்றனர். - கலைப்பிரிவு 10: பெளதிகவிஞ் ஞானம் 10 பொறியியல் 13 (மூவர் நேரடித்தேர்வு); வைத்தியம் 1: மிருகவைத்தியம் 1. -
க. பொ. த, ப, (உ/த) மார்கழி 65 :
49 மாணவர் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் புகத்தகுதி பெற்றனர். கலைப் பிரிவில் 15 மாணவர் நான்கு பாடங்களிலும், பொறிஇயல், பெளதிக விஞ்ஞானப்பிரிவில் 23 பேர் நான்கு பாடங்களிலும், 6 பேர் மூன்று பாடங்களிலும், வைத்தியப்பிரிவில் 5 பேர் மூன்று பாடங்களிலும் சித்திபெற்றனர். மொத்தம் 47 மாணவர்கள் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் அனுமதிபெற்றனர் - பொறிஇயல் 23, வைத்தியம் 5; பெளதிக விஞ்ஞானம் 4; கலை 15; பொறிஇயல் பிரிவில் இடம்பெற்ற மாண வர் தொகையில் எங்கள் கல்லூரி மீண்டும் இலங்கையில் முதலிடம் வகிக்கிறது. கட்டுபெத்தையில் உள்ள தொழில்நுட்பக் கல்லூரியில் ஒரு விஞ்ஞானமாணவர் இடம்பெற்றர். இதுவரை ஒரே ஆண்டில் பல்கலைக் கழகத்துக்கு காம் அனுப்பிய மாணவர்தொகையில் கூடுதலானது 47 ஆகும். இவ்வாண்டு விஞ்ஞான கலைப்பிரிவுகளில் கூடுதலான நுழைவு பெற்ற கல்லூரி எங்களுடையதாகும். எங்கள் கல்லூரியின் 75 - வது ஆண்டு நிறைவுவிழாவுக்குப் பொருத்தமான சாதனையே இது.
ஆசிரியர்களில் மாற்றம்:
உயர்தர வகுப்புகளில் கணிதம் பயிற்றியவரும், திறமையும் ஆசிரியத் தொழிலில் ஈடுபாடும் மிக்கவரும், எட்டு ஆண்டுகளாக தன் பழைய கல்லூரியில் பணியாற்றியவருமாகிய திரு. வி. வரதராஜப் பெருமாள் தன் வீட்டுக்கு சமீபமாக இட மாற்றம் பெற்றர், அவர் இலங்கை, இலண்டன் பல்கலைக் கழகங்களின் கணித ஆனர்ஸ் பட்ட தாரி. பயிற்றும் பாடத்தைத் திறமையாகக் கையாளுபவராதலாலும் மாணவரிடத்து தளராத அக்கறை காட்டுபவராதலாலும் பெரிதும் விரும்

III'II III' LLGOI iir. அவருடைய பிரிவினுல் நாம் துயருற்ருேமாயினும், மானிப்பாய் இந்துக் கல்லூரி அவருடைய இட மாற்றத்தால் பெற்ற Iலன்பற்றிய நினைவினுல் தேறுதல் அடைகிறேம், இலண்டன் பல் கலேக் கழகத்தில் கணித பாடத்தில் அவர் பட்டதாரி டிப்புளோமா பெற்றதைக் குறித்துப் பாராட்டுவதுடன், இன்பமெய்த வாழ்த்துகிருேம்,
அவருடைய இடத்தை நிரப்ப பரீ சோமாஸ்கந்த கல்லூரியிலிருந்து இடமாற்றம் பெற்று வந்த இலங்கைப் பல்கலைக் கழக கணித பட்ட தாரியான திரு. வி. சோமசேகரசுந்தரத்துக்கு நல்வரவு கூறுகின்றுேம்.

விடுதி இன்னுெரு திருப்திகரமான ஆண்டைக் கழித்துள்ளது. கல்லூரியில் புது மாணவர் சேர்வது கட்டுப்படுத்தப்பட்டிருப்பதால் விடுதிச்சாலையில் உள்ளோரின் தொகை சற்றே குறைந்துள்ளது. படிப் படியாக பொருட்களின் விலை உயர்ந்துகொண்டே வந்தபோதிலும், நல்ல உணவு, விடுதிச்சாலை மாணவருக்குரிய ஏனைய வசதிகள் ஆகிய வற்றில் எங்கள் நற்பெயரைக் காப்பாற்றியுள்ளோம். விடுதிச்சாலை மாணவர் கழகம் முதற்றவணையில் எங்கள் பழைய மாணவர்களில் சிறப்புப்பெற்ற மேல்சபை உறுப்பினர் எஸ். நடராஜா, டாக்டர் பி. சிவசோதி ஆகியவர்களைப் பிரதம விருந்தினராகக்கொண்டு விழாக் கொண்டாடினர்.

என்றும்போல் விளையாட்டுகள் யாவும் நடைபெற்றுக்கொண்டிருக் கின்றன. கிறிக்கெட்டில் எங்கள் முதற்பிரிவுக்கோஷ்டி 7 கல்லூரி ஆட் டங்களில் கலந்துகொண்டு மூன்றில் வெற்றியீட்டினர். இரண்டாவது பிரிவுக்கோஷ்டி 4 போட்டி ஆட்டங்களில் கலந்து மூன்றில் வெற்றி பெற்றனர். இறுதி ஆட்டத்தை இழந்து யாழ்ப்பாணக் கல்லூரிகள் விளையாட்டுச் சங்கம் நடாத்திய போட்டியில் இரண்டாவது இடத்தைப் பெற்றன்ர். திறமையான சாதனைகளுக்கு பந்தடிமட்டைகளை பரிசாகப் பெற்ற ரி. சிவசத்தியசீலன், ரி. கந்தசாமி, எஸ். சிவானந்தன், கே. சண்முகலிங்கம், வி. அருளானந்தம் ஆகியோரைப்பற்றி விசேஷ மாய்க் குறிப்பிட வேண்டும். இலங்கை கல்லூரிகள் கிறிக்கெட் சங்கம் ஏற்பாடு செய்த இரண்டாம் பிரிவு கிறிக்கெட் போட்டி ஆட்டத்தில் தென் கொழும்புப் பாடசாலைகளுக்கு எதிராக ஆடிய யாழ்ப்பான பாடசாலைக் கோஷ்டியில் ரி. கந்தசாமி, கே. சின்னராசா, பி. தர்மரத்தினம் ஆகி யோர் இடம்பெற்றனர்;

உதை பந்தாட்டத்தில் எங்கள் முதற்பிரிவுக் கோஷ்டி மூன்று போட்டி ஆட்டங்களிலும் நான்கு சிநேகயூர்வமான ஆட்டங்களிலும் கலந்துகொண்டது. இரண்டு ஆட்டங்கள் வெற்றியிலும் இரண்டு வெற்றி தோல்வி யின்றியும் மூன்று தோல்வியிலும் முடிவடைந்தன. எங்கள் இரண்டாவது பிரிவுக்கோஷ் . இன்னுெருதடவை சாம்பியனுயிற்று. மானிப்பாய் இந்துக்கல்லூரியுடன் கூட்டாக முதலிடம் பெற்ற அவர்க ளால் எங்கள் பெருமை காப்பாற்றப்பட்டது.
உடற்பயிற்சி விளையாட்டுகளில் எங்கள் வழமையான தரத்தை நாம் எட்டவில்லை. இல்ல விளையாட்டுப் போட்டி எங்கள் பழைய மாணவர் களில் ஒருவரும் கொக்குவில் இந்துக்கல்லூரி அதிபருமாகிய திரு சி. கே. கந்தசாமி அவர்கள் தலைமையில் நடைப்ெற்றது நாகலிங்க இல்லம் முத லிடத்தையும், பசுபதி இல்லம் இரண்டாவது இடத்தையும் பெற்றன. யாழ்ப்பாணக் கல்லூரிகள் விளையாட்டுச் சங்கப் போட்டியில் கலந்து கொண்ட 22 பாடசாலைகளுள் நான்காவது இடத்தைப் பெற்றேம், எங்கள் வீரர்கள் மட்டான இடங்களைப்பெற்ருர்கள். 14 வயதுக்குட்பட்ட பிரிவில் ரி, கெங்காதரன் பாடசாலைச் சிறந்த சாதனைக்குச் சமனுக 129 செக்கனில் 100 மீற்றரை ஓடினுர் 4 வயதுக்குட்பட்ட 4 x 100 மீற்றர் அஞ்சலோட்டக் கோஷ்டி 544 செக்கனில் ஒடி ஒரு புதிய சாதனையை ஏற்படுத்தியது. 1965 இல் நடைபெற்ற அகில இலங்கைப் பாடசாலைகள் போட்டியில் என்.ரி. மூர்த்தி 110 மீற்றர் தடை ஒட்டத்தில் 5-வது இடத் தைப் பெற்றர். 1966 இல் ரி. கங்காதரன் 14 வயதுக்குடபட்டவர் பிரி வில் 100 மீற்றர் ஓட்டத்தில் 4-வது இடத்தைப்பெற்றர்.
உடற்பயிற்சிப் போட்டியில் எங்கள் சிரேஷ்ட கோஷ்டி மண்டலப் போட்டியில் முதலாவது இடத்தையும், மாவட்டப்போட்டியில் இரண்டா வது இடத்தையும் பெற்றனர். கைப்பந்தாட்டமும், ஏனைய விளையாட்டுக் களும் வழக்கம்போல் நடைபெறுகின்றன.

Principal's Report
MR. S. THANIKASALAM, MRs. THANIKASALAM
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,
It is a pleasant privilege once again to welcome you all to our Annual Prize - Giving.
We deem it a rare honour to have Mr. Thanikasalam with is this evening as our Chief Guest. Closely associated though he has been in recent years with the activities of our College, in particular with the 75th Anniversary Celebrations of last year, his presence today makes itself especially memorable as the first appearance - gratifying as well as gracious - at an academic function such as this of the first Director of Education of the Northern Region.
Elevation to such high office should move us, so near to you in time and space, to the expression of feelings of felicitation that are more than merely formal. Fervent even they ought to be but for the fact that your stewardship as Assistant Director of Education rendered the addition of responsibility with the consequent enhancement of status, so logical as to be inevitable.
But where felicitation may lack fervour, faith need not lack firmness: for we are confident - even as the Department ís — that under the dispensation ushered in by the decentralisation envisaged by the White Paper none could be more desirable and dependable than one who had been so sure and so sound at the helm under the old dispensation.
In a department where many an official has retired without breaking out of the vicious circuit that is the inspectorate, your rapid progress from that

level to the directorate is indeed worthy of admiration. That efficiency informed by common sense and inspired by consciousness of duty can still reach the commanding heights of public administration is an earnest as much of your probity as of the prosperity that awaits Lanka.
But attached as we are to the teaching aspects of the education system, we feel even more happy to welcome you, as one who was an educator - a head of a College, to be precise - before becoming an administrator. And loyal as we are to Jaffna Hindu we are equally happy that by gracing this assembly of ours today you are following in the footsteps of your learned uncle, Mr. K. S. Arulinandhi, a former Director of Education, who as Education Officer of the North ern Province three decades ago delivered a prize-day address that is still treasured in the records of this College.
It gives us great pleasure, therefore, to be able to honour you, Snr, in the way that the late A. Cumara swamy, his assistants and students honoured an eminent educationist and the topmost educational ad. ministrator of the North in their day.
To Mrs. Thanikasalam we are equally obliged fo accepting our invitation and kindly consenting to give away the prizes - a tiresome, and in your presen state of poor health even tiring, ritual which you Madam, performed so graciously at another function of ours some years ado. May God grant you the recovery of that strength which effectively though un ostentatiously has helped your husband in making such a success of his work.
On an occasion like this with the decentralisatio of administration already in force and the chief ad ministrator himself in our midst, it would be inexpli

cable if I did not refer to the impact it could have On Our work at Jaffna Hindu.
Educational activity having spread so rapidly all Over the country, the centralised administration ade. quate to the needs of yesterday has been hard put to meet the demands of today. For all its advantages in integrated planning and close co - ordination, control from Colombo has been too remote to react sensitively either to provincial pressures or regional requirements.
Hence, the change to a decentralised form of Control has not come a day too soon.
We at Jaffna Hindu, who have not been forced out of step by reforms in education - be it free education or the introduction of the Swabhasa as medium or a state system of Schools - welcome this change as yet another natural development in the democratic evolution and expansion of educational opportunity. So many schools like ours owe so much of our recently rapid growth to such evolution that it would be suicidal for us - our all-island status notwithstanding - to retard this change let alone resist it.
On the contrary, in the context of the growing complexity involved in the running of each school as a unit in itself, our hope is that decentralisation may be permitted to seep down far enough to permit greater autonomy for the schools themselves.
Acceptance of decentralisation is not, however, to imply that all change is for the better. A sense of discrimination, without which no education could be complete, demands that no item of change be allowed to pass without being examined on its intrinsic merits. The proposal for compulsory classification at Standard VIII, which figures large in the White

Paper is a case in point. It is an issue on which educationists have for long begged to differ among themselves. And where the battle has been so pro" tracted and the protagonists so eloquent, it would be tedious if one ventured, without pleading for one side or the other, merely to recapitulate thesis and counter - thesis. Nor would any passing of judgment, succinct or even summary, here and now, retain much validity when the court of appeal extends all the way from the Parent - Teacher Association to Parliament and the Senate.
If this reticence on our part suggests diffidence or defeatism, may I move on to something where Jaffna Hindu cannot be dismissed as being diffident or defeated - the teaching of the sciences so vital today for national development. In this field where our school can claim some measure of credit for service to its community it could do even more given the accommodation and apparatus intended for only the ground floor of the projected Science Block. And with the solicitude always shown for our welfare by our Director of Education the day cannot be far off when this hope of ours will be realised,
The period which this Report reviews has been particularly prosperous on many fronts - in studies, in sports, in cultural and religious actiOurselves vities. Special mention must be made of the all - Ceylon record we have set up in our admissions to the University. While there was a general massacre in the last December O. L. and A. L. examinations, our performance is a problem to those who are gathering statistics to prove their point in regard to the sudden fall in standards this year. Since the introduction of the University Entrance classes most of the bigger schools like ours have addressed themselves to the increasing demand for science education by parents. We have

been straining all our resources to the needs of these classes as our prestige and success mainly depend on the results of these examinations. Our individual achievements apart, those who make the grade in these examinations generally are a very small percentage of the total number of students in a school and a way out must soon be found to make schooling effective for the vast majority that Inow fall by the wayside. This is indeed a complex phenomenon and a number of scapegoats have to be sacrificed if one tries to oversimplify the situation by laying the blame on any particular party. The habit of passing the buck is a very familiar pastime in our scholastic circles beginning at the University and going down to the Kindergarten. Finally, it is put down to home influence. This is indeed a wasteful approach to a problem that has to be tackled at the highest ievel of educational statesmanship.
Our number on roll is 1227 spread out as follows: Junior Secondary 483; Senior Arts 178; Senior Science 566. We have been able Our number to limit admissions up to a point, but On rol judging from the rush for admissions next year, it would be an uphill task to maintain the same limits. The problem is precisely limited ground space and shortage of staff.

Out of the 47 students who sought admission 33 students gained admission to the G. C. E. (A. L.) University of Ceylon. Arts 10, PhysiDec. 1964. cal Science lO, Engineering Il 3 (of whom three were admitted direct), Medicine ), Veterinary Science l.
49 students qualified to seek admission to the Ceylon University. In Arts l5 students G. C. E. (A. L.) passed in four subjects, in EngineerDec. 1965 and Physical Science 23 students passed in four subjects and 6 passed in three subjects. In Medicine 5 passed in three subjects.
47 students in all gained admission to the Ceylon University - Engineering 23, Medicine 5, Physical Science 4, Arts lS. In the number of admissions to the Faculty of Engineering, our college has once again come first in the island. One Science student gained admission to the School of Technology at Katubedde. 47 is the highest number we have sent to the University in any year and also the highest number of Science & Arts admissions from any school in the island this year. This is indeed a record worthy of the 75th Anniversary of the College.
Mr. W. Waratharajah Perumal one of our able and devoted teachers of Mathematics in the A. L. Classes moved nearer home after serving Changes in his old school for 8 years. An honours the Staff Graduate in Mathematics of the Ceylon and London Universities, he was very much sought after for his skilful handling of the

subject and his abiding interest in his students. Though we were sad to part with him we are Comforted in the thought that Manipay Hindu College stands benefited by his transfer. We congratulate him on his success in the Post Graduate Diploma in Mathematics of the London University and wish him all happiness.
We welcome Mr. V. Somasegerasundaram, a Mathematics Graduate of the Ceylon University, who came on transfer from Sri Somaskanda College to fill his place.
Mr. S. Radhakrishnan who taught here for 7 years went on transfer to Vivekananda Vidyalayam, Colombo at the beginning of the year. He took a keen interest in the general activities of the school and was a useful member of the Board of Discipline. We value his services greatly and wish him well in his new surroundings,
Mr. K. S. Mylvaganam, one of our Senior Teachers, who handled Mathematics, English and Tamil in the Senior Forms had to retire in September this year on grounds of ill health. A Trained Graduate of c5 years teaching experience, he has put in 18 years at Jaffna Hindu College. Keenly interested in matters religious, he identified himself with the Y. M. H. A. and other cultural activities at School. We thank him for his services and Wish him health and happiness in his period of retirement.

tioning as the librarian since January 1966. Though
an institution like ours needs the services of a
qualified Librarian, Mr. Thanabalasingam has been
acquitting himself creditably by reorganising the

Library under the guidance of Senior Masters and an Advisory Committee of Senior students.
We congratulate Mr. K. Sockalingam of our staff on his success in the General Arts Qualifying Examination of the Ceylon University.
We are constrained to repeat here the need for at least one Science Graduate able to handle Mathematics in the A. L. Classes if we are to maintain our standards. In spite of the scarcity of suitably qualified teachers for this important work, something must be done to satisfy this long felt want. We look forward with confidence in the coming year and expect the Director of Education to corne to our rescue. We are also expecting the return of Mr. B. Joseph, teacher of Handicrafts, and Mr. N. Somasundaram, Cadet Master, after completing their Secondary Training Course at Palaly at the end of this year. We have been greatly handicapped by their absence. In fact Wood Work had been dropped during this period. Cadeting needs the services of Mr. N. Somasundaram. since Lieut. S Parames waran has now been appointed Company Commander - an office that relieves him from his responsibilities as Cadet Master here.
The Y. M. H. A made history when it sponsored the celebration of the All-Ceylon Sekkilar Maniram which organized a two - day programme of Sekkilar Guru Pooja and Conference at the
Religio AS and Cumaraswamy Hall which was very Cultural Activities well attended. Leading Hindu
Institutions participated in the celebrations which were indeed of a high order. As usual the Guru Poojas of Saiva Saints, the Maha Sivarathiri and Navarathiri and the annual pilgrimage to Thiruketheeswaram were organized. Seminars and speeches in which our students and students of

other schools participated were the usual feature of these activities. Mahatma Gandhi Day, Thiruvallu var Day, and Arumuga Navalar Day were observed with special assemblies in the Prayer Hall. Our results at the Religious Examinations conducted by the Vivekananda Society, Colombo, were markedly good.
We must place on record our appreciation of the devoted labours of Mr W. Framba moorthy who was in charge of the Y. M. H. A for the last two years, and welcome Mr. K. Sivaramalingam who has taken over this year. To make spiritual activities meaningful and relevant in a fast changing technological era is the most exacting task for schools in a modern age, and calls for the dedicated labours of capable men in this field.
The School Societies and Clubs continue their normal round of activities. Most notable among these is the formation of one Union for all A. L. Students which has been a real need for several Societies years. It has begun to function effectively by bringing the Arts and Science students more closely for cultural pursuits. They held their first Union Dinner recently with Mr. N. Nadesan, the Special Commissioner of the Municipal Council, as their Chief Guest. The Historical and Civic Association, the Tamil Peravai, the Film Club, the Garden Club, and the Radio Club, all these are continuing to function efficiently. The Science Union organized a very successful All Ceylon Tour to places of scientific and historical interest and were enthusiastically received by Old Boys everywhere. These Societies and Clubs have widened the horizons of school life and provided opportunities for leadership among a wide circle of talented students.
In the Drama Competition organised by the Arts Council we won the 3rd place. In the N. P.

T. A. Elocution and Music Competitions this year, we secured three places in Music. Eleven students won Merit Certificates in Art in the Art Competition organized by the Pradesha Kalai Manram, Jaffna.
The 1965 Number of the 'Young Hindu' was brought out at considerable expense and labour as a Special Number (the biggest volume
"The hitherto published) to commemorate the You Lig Bindu. 75th Anniversary of the founding of
the College. By incorporating in this issue all the information they have been ablə to
gather from various sources about the College and its achievements in various fields, the Editorial Panel have indeed rendered yeoman service which provides a useful record for posterity. We are heartened by the numerous messages of apprecia. tion from our Alumni, and their response to our call for donations. We thank the Editorial Panel for this meritorious piece of work.
The hostel has had generally another satisfactory year. The numbers have slightly decreased from last year on account of restricted admission The ostel to the school. Although the cost of all commodities has been steadily rising, we have been able to maintain our reputation for good food and other facilities offered to our boarders. The Hostel Union had their celebrations during f he first term with Senator S. Nadarajah and Dr. P. Sivasothy, two of our distinguished Old Boys, as Chief Guests.
The sports activities of the school go on as usual. In cricket our First Eleven played 7 Inter School matches and won three. Our Second Sports Eleven played four competition matches and won three and lost the Championship match and became runners-up in the competitions organized

by the J. S. S. A. Special mention must be made of T. Sivasathiaseelan, T. Kandasamy, S. Sivanandan, K. Shanmugalingam and V. Arulanantham who were all presented with bats for meritorious performances. T. Kandasamy, K. Sinnarasa and P. Tharmaratnam represented the Jaffna Schools in the Second Eleven Inter Zonal Cricket Match against the Colombo
South Schools organised by the Ceylon Schools Cricket Association.
In Football our First Eleven played three com. petition matches and four friendly matches, won two, drew two and lost three Our Second Eleven retrieved our reputation by winning once again the Inter - School Championship bracketed with Manipay Hindu College.
In Athletics we were not up to our usual stand. ards. The Inter ouse Meet was held under the patronage of Mr. C. K. Kanthaswami, Principal, Kokuvil Hindu College and one of our Old Boys. Nagalingam House became Champions while Pasupathy House was placed second. In the J. S. S. A. Meet we got the 4th place among 22 schools. Our boys won a fair number of places. T. Gengatharan of under 14 equalled the 100 metres schools record of 12.9 seconds. The under 14 relay team established a new record in the 4 x 100 metres relay by running it in 54.4 seconds. In the 1965 Public Schools Meet N. T. Moorthy won the 5th place in the ll.0 metres hurdles. In the 1966 Public Schools Meet T Gengatharan won the fourth place in the OO metres ( Under l1 ).
in the P. T. competitions the Senior squads were adjudged the first in the zonal competition and second in the Jaffna District Schools competition. Wolley ball and other minor games go on as usual

The impetus given to agriculture by getting our boys to participate in the National Weeding Campaign is very welcome indeed. But Agriculture agriculture as a compulsory Subject in our Schools requires expensive provision of land, additional equipment and parental co-operation. Last year our students planned and executed a very successful Paddy Weeding programme locally and at Killinochchi and were commended by the Department.
Our Scouts are celebratind the 50th year of Scotting at Jaffna Hindin College. They staged a drama entitled 'Tharasayinbarn' this term. Scouting & They came first in the Town Zonal Rally Cadeting held at Kilinochchi in the 2nd term. They attended the Oueen's House func. tion to receive the Sir Andrew Caldecott Bowl from the Governor General. They also participated in the Jaffna District Boys Scouts Golden Jubiles Jamboree held at the Old Park. Mr S. C. Muthucumaran is in charge of the Sco at Troop and Mr. R. S Sivanesarajah is in charge of our Cub-Pack. The Scout Group Committee under the chairmanship of Mr. A. Thanabalasingham is of real assistance to this important activity at school.
Our Cadets are faring well under the continued guidance of Lieut. Si Parameswaran who has now been appointed Company Commander for the 'B' Company, Fourth Battalion. We Congratulate him on this achievement. Our Junior Cadets attended the Annual Junior Cadet camp held at Diyatalawa. Mr. M. P. Selvaratnam of our staff accompanied them. Our Senior Cadets attended the Annual Senior Cadet Camp at Diyatalawa accompanied by Lieut. Parameswaran. C. S. M. Jeyakumar has been appointed Company Sergeant Major and K. Gopal has been appointed Company Quarter Master Sergeant.

A. ernment to complete at least the ground floor of the Science Block at the earliest. We are happy to note that the Ministry of Education has given priority to the call for a Financial grant for the project for l966/67. The Colombo Branch has been able to revitalise itself after some time, It was able to organise in Colombo a well attended complimentary dinner to Hon. Justice W. Sivasubramaniam, one of our devoted alumni, on his elevation to the Supreme Court Bench. He is our first old boy to achieve this high honour. We congratulate him and wish him greater success in this eminent office.
The College is always proud of all of our old boys who continue to adorn the professions, the public services and serve the country in various walks of life.
