செம்மை நலமிக்க சிவப்பிரகாசபிள்ளே தம்பதிகளே, பெரியோர் களே, தாய்மார்களே,
உங்களனைவரையும் இப் பரிசளிப்பு விழாவில் யாழ்ப்பாண இந்துக் கல்லூரியின் சார்பிலே வரவேற்கும் பேறு கிடைத்தமைக்கா கப் பெரிதும் மகிழ்ச்சியடைகிறேன்.
உயர்திரு சிவப்பிரகாசபிள்ளையவர்கள் இன்று நம் மத்தியிலே பிரதம விருந்தினராகக் கலந்துகொண்டது நமது பாக்கியமேயாகும். எங்கள் பழைய மாணவர் பவரிடத்தும் இயல்பாகவே காணப்படும் தன்னடக்கத்துக் கோரிலக்கணமாய் விளங்கும் இவரைக் கொண்டுவந்து அரங்கிலே நிறுத்தி எல்லோரையும் போல அலங்காரமான ஒரு மேடைப் பிரசங்கத்தைச் செய்விப்பது இலகுவான காரியமன்று ஆணுல் இன்று அந்தத் தன்னடக்கத்தையும் மீறி இந்த வைபவத்துக்கே ஓர் அணிகலமாக இங்கு வீற்றிருக்கின்றரென்ருல் அது எங்களுடைய விடாமுயற்சியின் பயன் என்று கூறிவிட முடியாது. 3S)-(560)LUL விருப்பு வெறுப்புக்களையும் தன்னடக்கத்தையும் மீறி அவரை இங்கே இழுத்து வந்தது தாய்ப்பாசம், அதாவது அவருடைய பழைய கல்லூரி யின் மீது அவர் கொண்டுள்ள பாசமே யன்றி வேறில்லை.
தம்மைத் தாய்போலப் பேணிய இக் கல்லூரியிலே தாம் பெற்ற அடிப்படைப் போதனைகளே தமது அரும் பெருஞ் சாதனைகளுக் கெல்லாம் காரணமாயமைந்தவை என்று கூறிக்கொள்வதில் பெருமை
யடையும் ஒரு பழைய மாணவர் என்ற முறையிலேயே, ஐய,
தங்களை இன்று வரவேற்றுப் பெருமையடைகிருேம், தாங்கள் சாதித்த அரிய சாதனைகள் சாதாரணமானவையல்ல; நாமடையும் பெருமை யும் அத்தகையதே. சர்வகலாசாலைக் கல்லூரியிலிருந்து அரசாங்க விருது பெற்று (Scholarship) - கல்வித்தரத்தில் மிக உயர்ந்த நிலை யெய்திய மாணவர்களுக்கு மாத்திரமே மேல்நாடு செல்லக்கூடிய அரிய வாய்ப்புக்கள் கிடைத்து வந்த அக் காலத்தில் இங்கிலாந்து சென்று, லண்டனிலே விஞ்ஞான தொழில்நுட்பத் துறைகளுக்கமைந்த இ பிரியல் கல்லூரியிலே பதக்கம்பெற்று எமது அபிவிருத்திகளுக்கு ஆக்கமளிக்கக் கூடிய ஆற்றல்வாய்ந்த இலங்கையின் முதல் துறைமுகப் பொறியியல்

(4) நிபுணராகத் திரும்பினீர்கள். அதுவே நமது நாட்டுக்கு ஒரு மகத் தான சே  ைவ ய ர கும். ஆயினும் தாங்கள் பெற்ற அறிவுச் செல்வத்தை மற்றவர்களும் பெற வேண்டுமென்ற தணியாத ஆவல் மேலீட்டினுல் தாங்கள் மீண்டும் சர்வகலாசாலைக்கே செல்ல அங்கே புதிதாயமைந்திருந்த பொறியியல் பிரிவிலே தங்களை அக மகிழ்ந்தேற்
றுக் கொண்டார்கள். அங்கிருந்துகொண்டே தாங்கள் இலங்கையின்
புகர்வாழ்வுக் கின்றியமையாத பொறியியலறிஞர் பலரைப் பயிற்றியளித் தீர்கள்,
எனவே தாயும் பிள்ளையும் - அதாவது பழைய மாணவரொருவ ரும் தாய்த் திருக் கல்லூரியும் சந்திக்கும் இச் சந்திப்பு - அந்த மக னுடைய தந்தையார் காலஞ்சென்ற தம்பையாபிள்ளையவர்கள் இக் கல்லூரியின திகார சபையிலே நெடுங்காலம் தனுதிகாரியா யிருந்த தொடர்பையும், அந்த மகனுடைய தமையனுரான பெருமைக்குரிய திரு. த. முத்துச்சாமிப்பிள்ளையவர்கள் இக் கல்லூரியில் ஒரு மாண வராய், ஆசிரியராய், முகாமையாளருமாயிருந்த நீண்ட நெடுங் தொடர்புகளையும் கருத்திலே கொள்ளும்போது - ஆர்வமிக்கதொன்ற பன்றி வேறெவ்வாறமைய முடியும் ?
இன்னும் இத் தொடர்பு காலத்தாலும் சூழ்நிலைகளாலும் இளகி விடாது மேலும் இறுகப் பிணைந்திருக்கவேண்டுமென்று சைவபரிபாலன சபையின் முன்னைநாள் தனுதிகாரியா யிருந்த A சின்னப்பா அவர்களின் பேர்த்தியும், நமது மதிப்பிற்குரிய பழம்பெரும் பழைய மாணவரான

நல்லாளை யன்றே இவருக்கு வாழ்க்கைத் துணைவியா யமைந்திருக்கச் செய்திருக்கிறது தெய்வத் திருவருள்.
பொறியியலாளரை உற்பத்தி செய்வதில் சிறப்புற்று விளங்கி, இலங் கையில் முதலிடத்தை வகித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கும் இக்கல்லூரிப் பரிசளிப்பு விழாவிற்கு இலங்கையின் முதற் பெண் பொறியியலாளரைப் பெற் றெடுத்த அன்னையும் தந்தையும் தலைமை தாங்குவதைப்போல நமக்கு ஊக்கமும் உணர்ச்சியுந்தர வல்ல நிகழ்ச்சி வேறென்னதான் இருக்க முடியும் ? ஒக்ஸ்ஃபோர்ட் சர்வகலாசாலையிலே பயின்றுவரும் அப்பெண் கள் திலகம் கேம்பிரிட்ஜ் சர்வகலாசாலைக் கருத்தரங்கிலும் பங்குபற்றிப் பெருமையடைந்து வருவதைப் பார்க்கும்போது அவர் தந்தையையும் முந்திய தமிழனங்காய்த் திகழப் போகிறர் என்பது திண்ணம், புதல்வி மட்டுமென்ன புதல்வர்களுள் ஒருவர் எலக்ட்ரோனிக்ஸ் பகுதியில் கலா நிதியாகவும், மற்றெருவர் விமானப் பொறியியல் துறையில் கலாநிதிப் பட்டம் பெற்ற முதலாவது இலங்கையராகவும் திகழ்கிறர்கள்,

தந்தையாருடைய சாதனைகளைப்பற்றிச் சொல்லவந்த இடத்தில் அவர்தம் புதல்வர்களின் சாதனைகள் பற்றிக் கூறுவது குடும்ப வரன் முறைக்குப் பொருந்துவ தொன்ருக இருந்தாலும் காரணகாரிய ரீதிக்கு அது பொருந்தாதுதான். ஆனுல் திருவாளர் சிவப்பிரகாசபிள்ளை என்ற
குலகுருவின் உள்ளத்தின் உள்ளே நின்று ஊக்குவிக்கும் ஆதாாசக்தி
குடும்பவட்டத்தினுள்ளேயோ குறுகிய மாநிலப் பிரிவு என்ற கட்டுப் பாட்டினுள்ளேயோ அடங்கிக் கிடப்பதன்று. அங்ஙனம் அடங்கி நின்றுவிடுமானுல் பேராதனையில் நிகழ்ந்த பாணவர் குழப்பத்தின் போது சமாதானஞ் செய்துவைத்த பேராசிரியராய் அவர் விளங்கியிருக்க முடியாது. அல்லது சர்வகலாசாலேத் தேர்வுகளில் இவ்வளவு தூரம் முன்னணியில் திகழும் இவ் விந்துக்கல்லூரியான அவருடைய பழைய கல்லூரி, திருவாளர்கள்: திருவருட்செல்வன், செல்வ லிங்கம் போன்று அவர்தம்மைப் போலவே பொறியியல்துறையில் உயர்தகுதி படைத்தவர்களைக் காண இத்துணைக் காலம் காத்திருக்க வேண்டியுமிருக்காது.
இங்ஙனம், பெருமைபெற்றுத் திகழ்பவர்களைப்பற்றியே பேசிக் கொண்டு போவதானுல், பாடசாலைசென்று பாண்டித்தியமடைய முடியாமலிருக்கும் மெருக்தொகையான மாணவர்களை நாம் மறந்தவ ராவோம். அவர்களுகும் ஏற்ற கல்வியை அளித்து உபயோகமான முயற்சிகளை மேற்கொள்ளாத எந்தச் சமுதாயமும் உண்மையான சுதந்திரத்தைப்பெற்ற ஒரு சமுதாயம் என்று கூறமுடியாது விஞ் ஞானத் துறையிலே போதிய தராதரம் பெருதவர்களும் LIJU LJбOJ பரம்பரையாகக் கலைப்பகுதி என்ற பெருவெள்ளத்தின் போக்கிலே போய்க்கொண் டிருப்பவர்களுமாகிய அவர்களுடைய எதிர்காலம் சூனியமாகத்தான் இருக்கிறது. இந்த அணுயுகத்திலே, தொழில்நுட்பம், கைத்தொழில், விவசாயம் என்னும் தறைகளில் அபிவிருத்தி காண வேண்டுமென்று ஏங்கிநிற்கும் ஒருநாட்டில் அவர்களுடைய நிலை இதுதானென்றல் பள்ளிக்கூடத்திலுள்ள நாங்கள் என்னதான் செய் தி?ே? விசனத்துக்குரிய இப் பிரச்சினையைக் கண்ணே மூடிக் கொண்டே ஆண்டுதோறும் சமுதாயத்தின் தலைமீது சுமத்தி வருகிருேம்.
இப் பிரச்சினையைத் தீர்க்கவும் வழிவகைகள் கூறப்படுகின்றன. அவற்றுள் ஒருசில மகிழ்ச்சி தருவனவாய் இல்லாவிட்டால் இது பரிபூரணமான ஒரு சோக நாடகமாகவே முடிந்துவிடும். இவற்றை யெல்லாம் இங்கு விவரிக்கப் புகுவது ஒரு கேலிக்கூத்தைக் காட்டி உங்களைக் கிளுகிளுக்கச் செய்வதே ஆகிவிடும். எனினும் அவற்றுள் கியாயமானதாகக் காணப்படும் ஒன்றை நாம் கூர்ந்து ஆராயவேண்

டித்தானிருக்கிறது. கல்வித்துறையிலே காணக்கூடிய எந்த ஒரு சீர்திருத்தமும் சமுதாயத்தி னடிப்படையிலே மாறுதலேற்படும்வரை காத்திருக்கவேண்டும் என்பதுவே அது இப் பிரச்சினையை நாம் இவ்வாறுதான் அணுகவேண்டுமானுல் சும்மா பார்த்துக்கொண் டிருக்கச் சமுதாயம் குறிப்பிட்ட நியதிகளுக் குட்பட்டு மாறுதலடைய வேண்டும் என்ருகிவிடும். அதன் பெறுபேருக ைேலயில்லாத் திண்டாட்டம் பெருகுகிறது; விரக்தி மனப்பான்மை உள்ளத்தில் உறைகிறது; பாடசாலைகளில் ஒழுக்கச் சீர்கேடு நிரம்பிவழிந்து தெரு வெல்லாம் பெருகிப் பரவுகிறது; முடிவாக எல்லாம் ஒன்றகச் சேர்ந்து குவிந்து வெடித்துச் சிதறிச் சின்னுபின்னமாகிறது,
அரசியல் சுதந்திரம் வந்தபின்பு இலவசக் ல்வியைப் பெறுவோ
மென்று நாம் காத்திருந்தோமானுல் இன்றைக்கும் அதற்காகப் பிரசாரம் செய்துகொண் டிருக்கவேண்டிய நிலையிலேதானிருப்போம். அது போலவே சோஷலிசம் மலரட்டும் தேசீயக் கல்விமுறையை அமைக்கலாம் என்றிருந்தால் கல்லூரிகளை நடத்துவதற்க இன்னும் நாம் களியாட்ட விழாக்களைத்தான் நடத்தவேண்டியிருக்கும். அனைவர்க்கும் கல்வி என்ற முறை அமைந்த பின் புதான் சர்வஜன வாக்குரிமை என்று காத்திருந்தால் இன்றைக்கும் அதற்கான கிளர்ச்சி நடந்து கொண்டேயிருக்கும். எனவே எதனை இப்பொழுது செய்வது சாத்தியமோ அதனை இப்பொழுதே செய்யவேண்டும், என்பதுதான் நமது வேண்டு கோள். மாணவனுக்கு உபயோகமானதும் தேசத்துக்கு ஆக்கம்
தருவதுமான கல்வித்துறைச் சீர்திருத்தம் என்பது காலங்கடந்த ஒரு
விவகாரமாகிவிட்டது, அதற்காக இன்னும் பொறுத்திருக்க முடியாது: நமது இந்துக்கல்லூரியில் காமடைந்த அநுபவத்திலிருந்து கூறுகிருேம்: மாற்றம் மிகமிக அவசியமானது
இவ்வறிக்கையில் எடுத்துக் கூறப்படும் நமது சா த னை க ள் இத்தகையதொரு கல்விப் புனரமைப்புக்கு ஈடுகொடுக்க வேண்டுமே என்றுதான் நாம் தயங்குகிருேம்.

இனி, இவ்வாண்டின் எமது கருமங்களையும், சாதனைகளையும் நோக்கு வோம். இன்றுள்ள மாணவர் தொகை 1281 இவர்களுள் 480 மாணவர் இடைநிலை வகுப்புக்களிலே கற்கின்றனர். கல்லூரிப்பிரிவில் விஞ்ஞான வகுப்புக்களிலே 640 மாணவரும், கலைப்பகுதியில் 152 மாணவருமாக 792 மாணவர் உள்ளனர். கடந்த ஆண்டுப் பல்கலைக்

(7) கழகப் புகுமுகப் பரீட்சையிலே நாம் அடைந்த பெறுபேறுகளின் சிறப்பினுற் கவரப்பட்ட பலர் உயர்தர வகுப்புப் பொறியியற் பிரிவிலே மாணவரைச் சேர்த்தற்காய் முயல்கின்றனர். கடினமான பிரவேசப் பரீட்சைகளிற் சித்தி பெற்று எமது கல்லூரியிற் சேர்வேரின் தொகை பெருகி வரக் காண்கின்ருேம். இவ்வாறு சேரும் புதியவர்களின் தேர்ச்சியும் சிறப்பாகவே உள்ளது.
புதிய மாணவர்களைச் சேர்ப்பதில் எமக்குள்ள இடர்ப்பாடுகளிலே தலையாயது உயர்தர வகுப்புக்களில் விஞ்ஞான, கணித ஆசிரியர் களின் பற்றக்குறையாகும். இக்குறையினை ஈடுசெய்யக் கல்லூரிச் சகாயப் பணத்தைக்கொண்டு அவ்வப்போது தற்காலிக ஆசிரியர்களை நியமிக்கின்றேம், கடந்த ஈராண்டுகளாய்ச் சாதாரணதர உயர்தர வகுப்புக்களிலே மாணவரின் தொகை அதிகரித்தவண்ணமே இருக் கின்றது.
எதிர்காலத்தில் புதிய பாடசாலைச் சீரமைப்புத் திட்டத்தால் கல்வித் துறையிலே ஏற்படப்போகும் மாற்றங்கள்பற்றி எவ்வித தெளிவும் பெருத நிலையிலேயே இருக்கிருேம். எனினும் எமது கல்லூரியைப் பொறுத்தவரையில் இங்கு எட்டாம் வகுப்புத் தொடக்கம் க. பொ. த. ഉ_urg] ഖg !ഖങ്ങj இருக்கும் என்பது உறுதி சிரேஷ்ட பாடசாலை யாக இது அமைதல் வேண்டும் என்ற தீர்மானம் திருப்திகரமானதே. தகுதிவாய்ந்த மாணவர்களே எட்டாம் வகுப்பிலே தேர்ந்தெடுத்து அவர்களே உயர்தர வகுப்புவரை இடையில் எவ்வித தடைகளுமின்றிப் பயிற்றிச் செல்வதாகிய பொறுப்பின் தகுதிப்பாட்டினை நாம் ஏற்றுக் கொள்கின்ருேம். அன்றியும் இந்த ஒழுங்கினுல் இப்போதிருப்பது போன்று அளவுக்கதிகமான மாணவர்தொகையும் இருக்காது குறைந்த அளவு மாணவர்கள் இருந்தால் வகுப்புக் கல்வித்தரத்தை உயர்த்துவ தும் எளிதாகும். பொருத்தமும், தகுதியும் வாய்ந்த ஆசிரியரும்

எட்டாம் வகுப்புச் சித்தி எய்தியதும் தம் பிள்ளைகளுக்கு விஞ் ஞானப் பிரிவில் இடம்தேடிப் பிடித்தலே பெற்றேரின் இன்றைய மிகப் பெரும் பிரச்சினையாய் உள்ளது. பயனுள்ள அறிவு என்னும்பொழுது அதில் விஞ்ஞானமே முதலிடம் வகிக்கின்றது என்பதை நாமும் ஏற்றுக் கொள்கின்றுேம். ஆனுல் மாணவர் சமூகத்திறமை பெறவும், சிறந்த குடிமக்களாக வாழவும் ஏற்ற பயிற்சியும் அளிக்கப்படுதல் வேண்டும். ஆராய்ந்து பார்த்தால் இதுவே மிகவும் அவசியம் என்பது புலப்படும்,

எனவே மாணவர் யாவரும் விஞ்ஞானக் கல்வியோடு மனிதவியலையும் சாதாரணதர வகுப்புவரை கற்பதற்கான வாய்ப்புக்கள் அளிக்கப படுதல் வேண்டும். விஞ்ஞானத்திற்கே முதன்மை அளித்து மனித வியற் கல்வியைப் புறக்கணிப்பது மாணவருள் ஒரு பகுதியினரை
மனிதவியலாகிய கலைத்துறையைக் கற்போரை-ஒன்றற்கும் பயனற்ற
பேதையராய் ஆக்குவதாகவே முடியும்,
மாணவன் ஒவ்வொருவனுக்கும் அடிப்படை விஞ்ஞானக்கல்வியை ஊட்டுவது கடினமான செயலன்று பயிற்சி வழிகாட்டி முறை (Course Guides) uîl607ö (95TGöTG Qö (à5 (Učù GTGiflg)Tö5GUITin. இதற்கு உயர்ந்த தராதரம் பெற்ற ஆசிரியர்களே வேண்டும் என்ப தில்லை. சாதாரண ஆசிரியரே போதும். இவ்விடத்தில் ருஷ்யரும், அமெரிக்கரும் கொண்டுள்ள ஓர் உறுதியான நம்பிக்கையை நினை வூட்ட விரும்புகின்றேன். பெரும்பாலும் எல்லோரும் எல்லாத் துறை களிலும் பயனுள்ள கல்வியைப் பெறலாம் என்பதே, அவர்களின் நம்பிக்கையும், வலியுறுத்தலுமாகும்.
கட்டடங்களும் தளவாடங்களும்
கல்லூரிக் கட்டடங்களை வேண்டிய திருத்தங்களுடன் பேணி வருகின்ருேம் என்பதைத் தவிரக் கட்டடங்கள்பற்றி அதிகம் சொல்ல ஒன்றும் இல்லை. இந்தத் திருத்தங்களுக்கே எமது கல்லூரிச் சகாயப் பணத்தின் பெரும்பகுதி செலவாகி விடுகின்றது. திட்டமிடப்பட்ட விஞ்ஞான கூட த்தை அமைட்பதுபற்றி இன்றுவரை பேசிக்கொண்டே வந்திருக்கின்ருேமேயன் றிச் செயலில் எதுவும் நிகழவில்லை. கல்வி யதிகாரிகளின் கணக்கற்ற விஜயங்களோ, ஆராய்வுகளோ, எமது கடிதத் தொடர்புகளோ குமாரசாமி மண்டபத்தோடு இணைந்துள்ள விஞ்ஞான கூடத் திட்டத்திற்கு விடிவைத் தரவில்லை. எனினும் கீழ்ப் பகுதியைக் கட்டிமுடித்தற்கான செலவு எவ்வாறும் பெறப்படும் என்ற நம்பிக்கை உள்ளது. இதைத் தவிர மூன்றுமாடிகள் கொண்ட மகோன்னத விஞ்ஞான கூட அமைப்பாகிய கனவின நிறைவுசெய்வோம் என்று உறுதிகூறக், கல்வித் திணைக்களம் எளிதில் ஒருட்பட்டுவிடும் என்று கூறுவதற்கில்லே. அடுத்த ஆண்டின் முடிவிற்குள் பெற்றேரும் பழைய மாணவரும் முயன்று நிதி திரட்டி அரசாங்க நிதியுதவியோடு கீழ்ப்பகுதியைக் கட்டி முடிப்பர் என்று நம்புவோமாக.
அவ்வப்போது அரசாங்கம் உதவுகின்ற விஞ்ஞான கூடத்திற்கான செலவுறு பொருள்கள் (consumables) போதாமையால் நாமும்

அவற்றை விலைக்குப் பெற்றுச் சமாளித்து வருகின்ருேம். இவற்றேடு வேண்டிய தளவாடங்களையும் அமைத்துக் கொள்கின்றேம், செவிப் புலக் கட்புலப் பயிற்சிக் கருவிகள் அரசாங்கத்தால் தரப்பட்டு, அவை எமது மாணவரின் கல்வி வளர்ச்சிக்குப் பெரிதும் உதவுகின்றன. இவற்றைத் தந்தமைக்காக அரசாங்கத்திற்கு நன்றி செலுத்தும் அதே வேளையில் அவற்றைப் பாதுகாப்பாக வைப்பதற்கு ஓர் அறையினையும் அமைத்துத் தருமாறு கேட்டுக்கொள்கின்ருேம். இக்கோரிக்கை விரை வில் நிறைவேறும் என நம்பலாம்.
ஆசிரியர், இலிகிதர்
ஆசிரியர்களைப் பொறுத்தவரையில் இவ்வாண்டில் குறிப்பிடத்தக்க நிகழ்ச்சிகள் அதிகம் இல்லை. தமது ஈராண்டுக் கைப்பணியாசிரியப் பயிற்சியைப் பலாலி அரசினர் ஆசிரியப் பயிற்சிக் கலாசாலையில் முடித்து மீண்டும் எம்மிடையே வந்துள்ள திரு. S. சுப்பிரமணியம் அவர் களையும் மகிழ்ச்சியோடு வரவேற்கின்றுேம் திரு. A பொன்னம்பலம் அவர்கள் கடந்த ஆண்டு இலண்டன் கலைமாணிப் பரீட்சையிற் சித்தி எய்தியும், மனே வாழ்க்கையிற் புகுந்தும் சாதித்துள்ள இரட்டைச் சாதனை களுக்காக அவரைப் பாராட்டுகின்ருேம் -
ஏறக்குறையக் கடந்த நாற்பதாண்டுகளாய் எமது கல்லூரியின் பிரதம இலிகிதராய்க் கடமையாற்றிவரும் திரு. K. சிவக்கொழுந்து இவ் வாண்டு நவம்பர்மாத இறுதியில் தமது வயது காரணமாக ஓய்வுபெறு கின்றர். கல்லூரியின் ஆறு அதிபர்களுக்குக் கீழ்க் கடமையாற்றி ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் உண்மையாய் நடந்த அவர் எதையும் விரைவிற் கிரகித்துச் செயலாற்றும் வல்லமை உடையவர். தமக்குரிய கடமை கள்யாவிலும் திறமை பெற்றவர். மாணவர்களாலும், ஆசிரியர்களா லும் அவர் ஒருசேரக் கெளரவிக்கப்பட்டவராய் இருந்திருக்கின்றர். அவரது அநுபவஞானமும், சுயநலமற்ற கடமையுணர்வும் கல்லூரியின் வளர்ச்சிக்குப் பெரிதும் உதவியுள்ளன. அவரது இடத்தை வேறெரு வரால் நிரப்புதல் கடினம் என்பதோடு, அவர் அலுவலகத்திலே இல்லாமை யும் நீண்டகாலத்திற்கு உணரப்பட்டவண்ணமே இருக்கும். மேலும், இந்த ஆருண்டுக் காலமாகக் காரியாலய நிருவாகத்தில் என்பொருட்டு அவராற்றிய உதவிகளுக்கும் சேவைகளுக்குமாக நன்றியறிதலையும் பாராட்டுதலையும் தனிப்பட்ட முறையில் தெரிவிக்க விரும்புகிறேன்.

சமய, கலாசார நிகழ்ச்சிகள்
மகாசிவராத்திரி, நவராத்திரி, திருக்கேதீச்சரத் திருவிழாக்களையும்,
குருபூசைகளையும் எமது இந்து இளைஞர் சங்கம் ஒழுங்குசெய்து திறம்பட நடாத்தியது. சென்ற ஆண்டுபோலவே இவ்வாண்டும் குமாரசுவாமி மண்டபத்திலும், பிரார்த்தனை மண்டபததிலும் அகில இலங்கைச் சேக்கிழார் மன்றம் சேக்கிழார் விழாவையும், சேக்கிழார் குருபூசையை யும் நடாத்துவதற்கு எமது இந்து இளைஞர் சங்கம் உறுதுணையாய் அமைந்து உதவியது. இவ்விழாவில் எமது மாணவரால் மேடையேற்றப் பட்ட 'சேரமான் தோழர்' என்ற நாடகம் உயர்ந்த தரத்தில் அமைந்து சபையோரின் பாராட்டினைப் பெற்றது. கல்லூரி இசைக் குழுவினர் பண்ணிசைப் பயிற்சியை முறையாகப்பெற்று நாள்தோறும் நடைபெறும் பிராாத்தனையில் பஞ்ச புராணங்களை'யும் சிறப்பாக ஒதி வருகின்றனர்.
கல்லூரியின் பல்வேறு ம ன் ற ங் களும், குழுக்களும்
(Clubs) தங்கள் வழக்கமான கருமங்களை ஆற்றி வருகின்றன.
சரித்திர, குடிமையியல் கழகத்தினர் கல்விச் சுற்றுலா ஒன்றினை ஒழுங்கு செய்து இலங்கையின் வரலாற்று முக்கியம் பெற்ற இடங்களைக் கண்டு வந்தனர். தமது வெள்ளிவிழாவினைக் கொண்டாடத் திட்டமிட்டுவரும்
இவர்கள் மகாஜனுக்கல்லூரியோடு விவாதம் ஒன்றினை நடாத்தித் தம்

விடுதிச்சாலை உறுப்பினரின் தொகை 232. நெருக்கடி நிறைந்த S காலங்களிலும் நாம் எமது உணவின் தரத்தினைப் பேணிவந்திருக்கின் S. - ருேம், விடுதிச்சாலேயின் பல்வேறு கூட்டுக்களும் தமது கொண்டாட்'SS டங்களை நன்முறையில் நடாத்தியுள்ளன. இக் கொண்டாட்டங்களின் போது, கல்லூரிப் பழைய மாணவர்சங்கத் தலைவரான டாக்டர் K. శ్రీమిస్ట్ ஞானரத்தினம் அவர்களும், நியாயவாதி S ரீநிவாசன் அவர்களும் பிரதம விருந்தினர்களாய்க் கலந்துகொண்டனர். விடுதித் தோட்டப் பயிர்ச்செய்கைக் குழு தோட்டப் பயிர்களை விளைவித்தும், பாடசாலைச் சூழலைக் கவர்ச்சி பெறச் செய்தும் தொடர்ந்து தனது நற்சேவையைப் புரிந்துவருகின்றது.

குறிப்பிடத்தக்க அருஞ் சாதனைகளைச் செய்யாதவிடத்தும், வழமை போல எமது விளையாட்டு நிகழ்ச்சிகள் நன்முறையிலே நடந்தேறி வருகின்றன. உதைபந்தாட்டம்
முதற் பிரிவினர் கொழும்பு ஆனந்தாக் கல்லூரியுடனும், காலி முஸ்லிம் மகாவித்தி யாலயத்தோடும் நாம் ஆடிய சிநேகயூர்வமான உதைபந்தாட்டப் போட்டி கள் இரண்டிலும் நாம் தோல்வியடைந்தோம். போட்டிப் பந்தாட்டங் களில் நாம் கலந்துகொண்ட் குழுவினர்க்கு வெற்றி கிடைத்தது. விருது பெறுதற்கான இறுதிப் போட்டியில் நாம் யூனியன் கல்லூரியினர்க்குத் தோற்ருேம்.
இரண்டாம் பிரிவினர் நாம் விளையாடிய ஐந்து போட்டிப் பந்தாட்டங்களில் இரண்டு எமக்கு வெற்றியையும், மூன்று தோல்வியையும் ஈட்டித்தந்தன. நாம் விளையா டிய சிநேகயூர்வமான இரு பந்தாட்டப் போட்டிகளில் ஒன்றில் வெற்றி கிடைத்தது. மற்றது சமமாயிற்று. -
மூன்ரும் பிரிவினர் நாம் விளையாடிய 6 போட்டிப் பந்தாட்டங்களில் நாலில் வென் ருேம் ஒன்றில் சமமானுேம்; ஒன்று எமது தோல்வியில் முடிந்தது.

நாம் விளையாடிய எட்டுப் போட்டிகளில் இரண்டு வெற்றியையும், இரண்டு சமத்தையும், நான்கு தோல்வியையுந் தந்தன,
இரண்டாம் பிரிவினர்
DIT) விளையாடிய மூன்று போட்டிகளில் இரண்டில் வென்ருேம், விருதுக்கான இறுதிப் போட்டியில் நாம் கொக்குவில் இந்துக்கல்லூரிக் குத் தோற்க நேரிட்டது.
பிரதேசவாரியான கிரிக்கெட் போட்டி
இலங்கைப் பாடசாலைகள் கிரிக்கெட் சங்கத்தினர் ஒழுங்கு செய்த பிரதேசவாரியான இரண்டாம் பிரிவினர்க்கான கிரிக்கட் போட்டிக்கு எமது கிரிக்கட் வீரராகிய செல்வன் T. கந்தசாமி, செல்வன் A, சின்ன ராசா என்னும் இருவர் யாழ்ப்பாணப் பிரிவிற்குப் பிரதிநிதித்துவம் வகிக்கத் தெரியப்பட்டனர். மத்தியபிரதேசத்தோடு யாழ் பிரதேசப் பள்ளிகளின் தெரிவுக்குழு விளையாடிய கிரிக்கட் போட்டிக்குச் செல்வன் 1. கந்தசாமி யாழ்ப்பாணப் பிரிவின் தலைவனுகத் தெரியப்பட்டார்.
பாடசாலை விளையாட்டுப் போட்டி
22 கல்லூரிகள் பங்குகொண்ட விளையாட்டுப் போட்டியின் இறுதித் தேர்வில் எமது கல்லூரி ஐந்தாம் இடத்தைப் பெற்றது. செல்வன் 1. கங்காதரன் பதினுன்கு வயதினர்க்கான நூறுமீட்டர் ஓட்டத்தில், அந்த இடைத்தூரத்தை 126 செக்கனில் ஓடி யாழ்ப்பாணப் பாட சாலை விளையாட்டுச் சங்க வரலாற்றில் ஒரு புதிய சாதனையை நிலை நாட்டினுர் இல்ல விளையாட்டுப் போட்டி
வழக்கம்போல இல்ல விளையாட்டுப் போட்டி, எமது கல்லூரியின் புகழ்பூத்த பழைய மாணவர் டாக்டர் P. சிவசோதி அவர்களையும், அவரது பாரியாரையும் பிரதம விருந்தினர்களாய்க்கொண்டு சிறப்பாக நடந்தேறியது. இப் போட்டியில் பசுபதி இல்லம் முதலிடம் பெற்றது.
பாடசாலை உடற் பயிற்சிப் போட்டி
பத்தொன்பது வயதிற்குட்பட்ட மாணவரினதும், 16 வயதிற் குட்பட்ட மாணவரினதும் உடற்பயிற்சிப் போட்டியில் நாம் பங்கு

கொண்டு எமது வட் டாரத் தி ல் முதலிடத்தைச் சுவீகரித்தோம். இறுதிப்போட்டியில் ஒரு புள்ளியால் மல்லாகம் இந்துக்கல்லூரிக்குத் தோற்று இரண்டாம் இடத்தைப் பெற்றேம், பதினுறு வயதிற்குட் பட்டோரின் உடற்பயிற்சி இறுதிப் போட்டியிலும் எமக்கு இரண்டாம் இடம் கிடைத்தது.
வேலையநுபவம்
உயர்தர வகுப்பைச் சோந்த ஆறு மாணவர் திருக்கோணமலை சென்று வேலையனுபவம் பாசறைவாசம் செய்து, தமது வேலைத் திறத்தினுற் பாராட்டினைப் பெற்றனர். ஜூன் மாதம் 10ஆம் 11ஆந் தேதிகளில் நிகழ்ந்த வேலையநுபவ வாரத்தின்போது எமது கல்லூரி மாணவரும், ஆசிரியரும சுறுசுறுப்பாக இயங்கிப் பலவகை வேலை களிலும் ஈடுபட்ட காட்சி ஒரு தேனி நகரத்தை நினைவூட்டுவதாய் இருந்தது,
சாரணர் குழுவும் படைப்பயிற்சிக் குழுவும்
எமது சாரணர் குழு தனது பொன்விழாவை இவ்வாண்டு ஜனவரி மாதத்தில் கொண்டாடியது கேட் முதலியார் A. L. திசநாயக்கா அவர்களும், வடமாகாணுதிபதி திரு வேணன் அபயசேகரா அவர் களும் இவ் விழாவிற் கலந்துகொண்டு பரிசில்களை வழங்கினர். கவர்ச்சி வாய்ந்த நினைவு மலர் ஒன்றும் விழா நினைவாக வெளியிடப்பட்டது.
சாரணர்குழு கிளிநொச்சியில் இரு பாசறை வாரங்களை மேற்கொண் டது. கூலிக்கு வேலை வாரத்தில் நாம் கலந்துகொண்டு 900/ சேகரித்தோம். எமது முதல்வகுப்புச் சாரணர்களாகிய செல்வர்கள்" M. சிவராஜா, S. செந்தூர்ச்செல்வன், T. இராஜேஸ்வரன் ஆகிய மூவரும் அமெரிக்க ஐக்கிய மாகாணத்தில் நடைபெற்ற உலக ஜம்போரியிற் கலந்துகொள்ளத் தெரியப்பட்டனர். அவர்களில் இருவர் இம்மாத இறுதியில் இலங்கை திரும்புகின்றனர்.
வருடாந்த சாரணர் மகாநாடு இவ்வாண்டு செப்டெம்பர் மாதத் தில் நிகழ்ந்தது. அம்மகாநாடடில் இடம்பெற்ற போட்டிகளிலே எமக்கு இரண்டாம் இடம் கிடைத்ததாயினும் பொதுத்திறமை வெற்றிக் கிண்ணம் எமக்கே கிடைத்தது.
சாரணர்குழுச் சபையினர் எமக்கு எச்சமயத்திலும் உறுதுணைவராய் உள்ளனர். திருவாளர் S. முத்துக்குமாரன் அவர்களும், திரு V. S. சுப்பிரமணியம் அவர்களும் சாரணர் குழுவிற்குப் பொறுப்பாளராய்

உள்ளனர். ஓநாய்க் குருளையினர்க்குத் திரு R S சிவநேசராசா அவர் கள் பொறுப்பாளர்.
எமது படைப்பயிற்சியின் சிரேஷ்ட பிரிவினர் தமது வருடாந்தப் பாசறைவாசத்தினைத் தியத்தலாவையில் லெப்டினன்ட் S. பரமேஸ் வரன் அவர்கள் தலைமையில் மேற்கொண்டனர். கனிஷ்ட பிரிவினர் திரு. P. ஏகாம்பரம் தலைமையில் தியத்தலாவைக்குத் தமது வருடாந்த பயிற்சிக்காகச் சென்று திரும்பினா
மாணவ தலைவர் சபை
எமது மாணவ தலைவர்கள் தமது பொறுப்புக்களிற் பயிற்சியடைந் துள்ளனர். பாடசாலை நிருவாகத்தில் ஒரு பங்கினை ஏற்று நடாத்தல், மாணவர்கள் ஒழுங்காக நடந்து செல்கின்றனரா என மேற்பார்வை செய் வதன்மூலம் கல்லூரிக் கட்டுப்பாட்டைப் பேணுதல், பாடசாலை ஒழுங்கு களைக் கவனித்து வேண்டிய இடத்து உதவுதல், கல்லூரியின் சமூக வாழ்வைச் சுமுகமானதாய் ஆக்குதல் முதலான கடமைகளை அவர்கள் செய்துவருகின்றனர். செல்வன் K சேனுதிராசாவின் தலைமையில் மாணவ தலைவர் சபை திறமையாக இபங்கிக் கல்லூரிச் சமுதாய வாழ் வினை அர்த்தமுடையதாய் ஆக்குகின்றது.
பழைய மாணவர் சங்கம்
பழைய மாணவர் சங்கம் தொடர்ந்து உயிர்த்துடிப்புடன் இயங்கி வருகின்றது. எமது கல்லூரியின்மீது பத்தி பூண்ட பழைய மாணவரும், முன்பொரு தடவை இங்கு வருகைபுரிந்து சொற்பொழிவாற்றியவரு மாகிய கெளரவ நீதியரசர் W, சிவசுப்பிரமணியம அவர்களைப் பழைய மாணவர் சங்கம் வரவேற்று ஒரு பாராட்டு விருந்தும் அளித்தது. பழைய மாணவர் சங்கத்தின் கொழுப்புக்கிளை சிறிது காலத்தின் பின் சமீபத்தில் தனது வருடாந்தப் பொதுக்கூட்டத்தினை நடாத்தியது:
பெற்றேர் ஆசிரியர் சங்கம்
பெற்றேர் ஆசிரியர் சங்கம் தனது இரண்டாவது பொதுக்கூட் டத்தை இவ்வாண்டின் இரண்டாங் தவணையில் நடாத்தியதாயினும், இதற்கு வருகை தந்தோரின் தொகை மிகக் குறைவாகவே இருந்தது. கல்விச் சீரமைப்புக்களிற் பெரு மாற்றங்கள் நிகழும் இவ் வேளையில் இக் கூட்டங்களுக்குப் பெற்றேர் வருகை புரிவது மிக அவசியமாகின் றது. இப் பொதுக் கூட்டத்திற்கு மிகக் குறைந்த தொகையினரே வருகைபுரிந்திருப்பினும் எமது செயற்குழு திறமையாய் இயங்கி ஆக்க பூர்வமான திட்டங்களை வகுத்துச் செயற்படுத்த முன்வந்துள்ளமை

மகிழ்ச்சிக்குரியதே. விசைவண்டி (பஸ் ) ப் பிரயாணத்தில் பெருமளவு நேரத்தை மாணவர் செலவு செய்து வருவ்தும், ஆசிரியர்களின் வழி காட்டலின்றியும், போதிய முன்யோசனையின்றியும் மாணவர் விஞ்ஞான பாடங்களைத் தெரிவதுமாகிய குறைபாடுகளைப் போக்கச் செயற் குழு மேறகொள்ளும் நன்முயற்சிக்குப் பெற்றேரின் ஒத்துழைப்பை வேண்டு கின்றுேம். எட்டாம் வகுப்புப் பரீட்சை 1966
வடமாகாணத் தமிழாசிரியர் சங்கம் 1966ஆம் ஆண்டு நவம்பர் மாதத்தில கடாத்திய எட்டாம் வகுப்புப் பரீட்சையில் 68 மாணவர் சித்தியடைந்தனர், இவர்களுள் ஒருவர் முதற் பிரிவிலும், 57 மாணவர் கள் இரண்டாம் பிரிவிலும், பதின்மர் மூன்றம் பிரிவிலும் சித்தியடைந் துள்ளனர்.
க. பொ, த (சாதாரண தரம்)
ஆகஸ்ட், டிசம்பர் 1966
1966 ஆகஸ்ட் மாதத்தில் நிகழ்ந்த க. பொ. த. (சாதாரணதரம்) பரீட்சையில் ஐந்து மாணவர் ஐந்திலும் அதற்கு மேற்பட்ட பாடங்களிலும் சித்தியடைந்தனர் 1966 டிசம்பரில் நிகழ்ந்த பரீட்சையில் 89 மாண வர் ஆறிலும், ஆறுக்கு மேற்பட்ட பாடங்களிலும் சித்தியடைந்தனர். 40 மாணவர் ஐந்து பாடங்களிற் சித்தியடைந்தனர். தூய கணிதத் திலும், பிரயோக கணிதத்திலும், உயர்கணிதத்திலும் முறையே 36, 13, 5 சிறப்புச் சித்திகள் கிடைத்துள்ளன.
க. பொ த, (உயர்தரம்) டிசம்பர் 1966
28 மாணவர் பல்கலைக்கழகப் புகுமுகப் பரீட்சையிற் சித்தியடைந் தனர். இவர்களுள் 15 மாணவர் பொறியியல்துறைக்கும், மூவர் வைத்தியத்துறைக்கும், 6 மாணவர் கலைத்துறைக்கும், மூவர் பெளதிக வியல் விஞ்ஞானத்துறைக்கும் , ஒருவர் விவசாயத்துறைக்கும் தெரியப் பெற்றுள்ளனர். சென்றவருடம்போலவே நாடுமுழுவதுமுள்ள கல்லூரி களிலே பொறியியல்துறைக்குத் தெரிவான மாணவர்களுள் எமது கல்லூரி மாணவரே கூடிய தொகையினராவர். இவ்வாறு, பொறியியல் துறைக்குத் தெரியப்பட்டவர்களில் இருவர் தனித்தனி மூன்று பாடங் களில் விசேட சித்திபெற்றுள்ளனர், எல்லாமாகப் 16 விசேட சித்திகள் கிடைத்தன,

வைத்தியப்பட்டப் படிப்பில் இறுதித்தேர்வு இவ்வாண்டு ஜூலை மாதத்தில் பேராதனையிலும், கொழும பிலும் நிகழ்ந்தது. இப்பரீட்சை யில் இரண்டாம்பிரிவிற் சித்தி எய்திய ஆறுபேர்களில் இருவர் எமது கல்லூரிப் பழைய மாணவர்கள். திருவாளர் S. ஏரம்பமூர்த்தி, K. சந்திரசேகரம் ஆகிய இவ்விருவரது திறமையையும் பாராட்டி, எதிர் காலத்திலும் தொடர்ந்து வெற்றிகள் பெற வாழ்த்துகின்றேம்,

MR SIVAPRAKASAPILLAI, MRS SIVAPRAKASAPILIAI, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,
On behalf of the Jaffna Hindu College I have great pleasure once again in offering you all a very cordial welcome to our annual Prize-Giving.
We are fortunate indeed to have Mr. Sivaprakasapillai with us as our Chief Guest this evening because, with the self-effacing modesty so characteristic of so many of our Old Boys, he has never been the one easily to be persuaded on to a platform to deliver himself of a perioration that has to be pompous for the reason that it is platitudinous That he has today overcome this diffidence to the extent of gracing this occasion is no achievement of persuasive persistence on our part. Rather is it a measure of the tension that the old school tie still exerts as much on his inclinations as on his inhibitions,
It is, therefore, with great pride that we welcome you, Sir, as an Alumnus who has shown an equal pride in attributing his achievements to the foundations laid for them by his Alma Mater. The pride is all the greater since the achievements have been of no mean order. Proceeding from the University College on a Government Scholarship to the United Kingdom at a time when such opportunitty was reserved only for the academically brilliant, you won a medal at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, and returned to promote national development by becoming our first Ceylonese Harbour Engineer. That was service enough for our country. But prompted by the urge to propagate what you knew, you returned to the University which with its new Faculty

of Engineering was only too glad to have you on its staff. Since then you have done much to give the country the engineers it has needed for its regeneration.
Hence, the reunion of Alumnus and Alma Mater cannot but be warm particularly when the former's links with the College are reinforced by the close associations that his revered father the late S.Thambiahpillai had with it as Treasurer of the Board of Management and his illustrious brother Mr. T. Muttusami pillai. as student, teacher and Manager.
And to safeguard that reinforcement against stress or strain Providence has been so generous as to place by his side a companion for life who is none other than the grand-daughter of the late A. Chinnappah, one time Treasurer of the Saiva Paripalana Sabhai, and the niece of the oldest of our distinguished Old Boys, Mr. C. Coomarasamy. For this reason and for the fact that she runs a home of Hindu practice and piety,
Mrs. Sivaprakasapillai can be no stranger in our midst.
Indeed, at an annual academic function such as this of an institution that has made the production of potential engineers an unrivalled speciality, who could be more inspiring guests of honour than the parents of Ceylon's first woman engineer - an engineer who with her scholarship at Oxford and her particition in a seminar at Cambridge already threatens to overtake her brilliant father ? Nor are the sons out of step for, while one holds a doctorate in Electronics, the
other is the first Ceylonese to have obtained that distinction in Aeronautical Engineering.
This drift of reference from the feats of a father to those of his children may seem correct enough genealogically but is untenable logically because the

drive urging Mr. Sivaprakasapillai the pedagogue has never been parochial or provincial. Had, it been so he would not have been the peace-making don that he was during the Peradeniya strike. Nor would his old school, despite its consistent success at Univer. sity examinations, have had to wait till recent times to produce scholars in engineering Mr. Thiruvarudchel van and Mr. Selvalingam - of the Calibre of our Chief Guest himself.
To continue, however, in this vein would be to forget those who go to school but do not end up as scho. lars - the vast majority without whose proper education and purposeful effort no nation can be truly independent. The future of those who do not make the grade in science and of those who float down the traditional stream in arts has become bleak indeed . That this should be their plight not merely in the atomic age but in a country crying for developmenttechnical, industrial and agricultural - only under. lines the tragic nature of the problem that we at school mechanically pass on year after year to the world outside.
Complete too would this tragedy be were it not that some of the solutions offered provided the comic relief. To expose these would be to forget the occasion and attempt to regale you with farce. But one solution, sober as it is, calls for critical analysis. And that is that, to be radical, any educational reform must await the basic transformation of Society. To pose the problem in such a way is to accept a gradual development for society wherein man's role is merely that of a looker-on. The result is that unemploy. ment grows, frustration sets in, indiscipline at School overflows into the street and everything builds up to a mass explosion with chaotic consequences.

Had we waited for free education till after poli. tical freedom came we might still be campaigning for it. Had we postponed the national system of education for the period of socialism we might still be conducting carnivals to run colleges. And had we reserved adult franchise for the time when there would be universal education we might still be clamouring for it,
Hence, our plea is that what can be done now should be done now. The re-organization of education to make it purposeful for the child and productive for the nation has been on the agenda too long. We cannot afford to wait.
Our experience at Jaftina Hindu convinces us that such change is urgent Our only fear is that cur work as reported hereafter may not appear equal to the challenge that such change is bound to offer.
We shall now proceed to place before you our activities and achievements for the period under review. We are keeping the number on roll steady, at 128 classified as follows : 489 in the middle school, and 792 in the upper school; 640 in the ourselves Science classes and l52 in the Arts. There was unprecedented rush for admission to our A. L. Science classes this year mainly due to our very good results last year. In spite of rigorous admission tests larger numbers got in and they are reported to be faring well. Our chief handicap is the lack of additional teachers for these classes and we are still being helped out by temporary hands employed on Facilities Fees.
The picture of the new pattern of schools proposed is not yet very clear. It can however be stated that we shall function as a Senior New School System School starting from Standard eight and ending up at the Ad. vanced Level. This should prove to be a satisfactory

set up as we could accept the responsibility of taking in quite eligible children at a crucial stage and bringing them up to the Upper Sixth Form without too many barriers caused by diversification, With less overcrowding and proper staffing our present standards could be bettered in the new set-up
The greatest problem for the parents will be to find their children a place in the Science stream at the end of the eighth standard. i ti must be conceded that Science comes first in the priorities of useful knowledge. But our children need social skills and training in citizenship. They need wide opportunities of studying both the Sciences and Humanities. Casteism among children and even subjects is causing much damage and quite a number at our schools are falling by the wayside even at the Ordinary I evel With the introduction of Course Guides it should not prove difficult to teach some Science to every student, chiefly because such teaching does not entail the employment of highly qualified teachers. Let it be remembered that both the Americans and the Russians who stress the value of useful knowledge believe that almost anything can be taught to almost
every One.
There is little to report on buildings except to to state that we have been able to maintain all our buildings in good repair. And Baildings and Equipment this in itself takes away quite a slice of our Facilities Fees - our chief source of revenue. With regard to the Science Block to be built on the foundations laid years ago by the side of the Cumaraswamy Hall we are still taiking about it Files of correspondence are almost full and the Ministry of Education is hesitant to commit itself on an ambitious project. They are however convinced of the need to build up the ground

floor and are likely to release their grant in the current year provided parents and Old Boys and well-wishers contribute their mite to complete it.
With regard to equipment we are compelled to make purchases from our funds as supplies of Science consumables run short quite often The same is true of furniture as well as of items of Audio-Visual Equipment. We have not yet found a suitable àɔuilding wherein we could make the best use of the costly equipment we have as Audio-Visual Aid. We are relying 'on the help that our Director of Education has promised
Concerning the staff there is a great deal to re. port Mr. B. Joseph returned to us after a two-year course of Specialist Training in Han di Craft at staff Palaly. Mr. V. S. Subramaniam another speciallist trained teacher, of Mathematics, from G.T.C. joined us in January this year. We must congratulate Mr A. Ponnambalam on his double achievement - his
success in the London B. A. Examination as well as
in matrimony.
Mr. K. Sivakolunthu, our Chief Clerk, retires by the end of November on reaching his age limit. He has served the College for nearly forty years, under si. Principals. Capable and quick in handling his official duties, Mr. Sivakolunthu had made himself well nigh in dispensable to the school. He has been so effi. cient that it will be hard to replace him. He will leave behind him when he retires, a long record of loyal Service rendered to this College. I must also add my personal tribute and appreciation for the loyal and unstinted service I have received from him during
the 6 years of our association in office,

The Y. M. H. A. continued to function quite effiCiently organizing Maha Sivarathiri, Navarathiri, and Thiruketheeswaram Festivals and the Religio US and Guru Poojas. Its helping hand was Cultural Activites Commendably clear in the two-day. celebrations organized by the AllCeylon Sekkilar Manram once again at our College. The highlight of the festival was the playlet Seraman Tholar' staged with success by our students. The College choir is being systematically trained to render devotional songs and the chanting of Pancha Puranam at our daily prayers has consequently improved in quality.
The various societies and clubs carried on their usual round of activities. This time it was the Histoa rical and Civic Association that organized an All. Ceylon Tour; it had a debate with Mahajana College and is planning to celebrate its Silver Jubilee next year. The Geographical Society has been revived. The Science Association had their usual meetings. The Radio Club is very much alive. it took part in the
Exhibition held by the Ceylon Federation of Science Clubs in Colombo and was awarded a Merit Certificate.
The A. L. Union was able to organize the annual Union dinner with Dr. T. Arulam palam, one of our distinguished Old Boys, and Mrs. Arulampalam as Chief Guests. Mention must be made of P. Tharmaratnam who represented our school ably in the Inter-Schools de
bate on U. N. Day last year and V. Karthigeyan who
won the second prize in the essay competition organized by the Chemical Society of Ceylon. In the N. P. T. A., competitions we won the first prize in the Junior Group singing and were awarded the Navaliyoor Somasundara Pulavar Challenge Shield,

We have 232 students in the Hostel. In spite of difficult times we are able to maintain our standards in diet. The various Unions had their The Biostel celebrations, during the first term. We commend the work of the Garden Club for its continued activities in keeping the campus fresh and green.
Sports We do not have anything spectacular to report
on in sports.
Football 1966 In our competition matches we became winners in the Group and lost to Union 1st Eleven College in the championship final. We played 2 friendly matches against Ananda College, Colombo, and Galle M. M. W. and lost both.
2nd Eleven Of the 5 competition matches we won 2 and lost 3 and in the 2 friendly matches we won one and dire W, the other.
3rd Eleven Of the 6 matches we won 4, drew l and lost l.
Cricket 1966
1st Eleyen We played 8 matches, won 2, drew 2 and lost 4.
2nd Eleven We became runners-u12 losing to Kokuvil Hindu in the final match. In the Inter-Zone 2nd Eleven Cricket Tournament organized by the Ceylon Schools Cricket Association two of our players - T. Kandasamy
and W. Sinnarasa - were selected to represent the Jaffna Schools,
T Kandasamy was also elected Captain of the Jaffna Schools Team against the Central Zone.

The Inter-House Athletic Meet was held as usual,
under the patronage of Dr P Sivas othy, one of our
distinguished Old Boys, and Mrs. Siva
Inter Fose Sothy. Pasupathy House won the chamAthletic Meet ship.
We entered the under 19 and under-16 competi
tions and came out winners in Inter School Physical our circuit. In the district ComDrill Competition petitions we were edged out to
the second place by one point by Mallakam Hindu College. In the under-16 group too
we won the second place.
Six of olir students in the A. L., classes attended the Werk Camp in Trincom ale e and were highly commended for their work June 10th Work Experience and llth were observed as Work Experience days at College. It was a veritable hive of a variety of jobs which proved ab. sorbing indeed to both teachers and students. In painting and whitewashing, mending furniture and digging the garden, there was the joy of getting insights-brief though they be - into the world the students would soon join
Our Scout Group celebrated its Golden Jubilee in January this year Gate Mudl. A. L. Dassanaike was the Chief Guest. Mr. Vernon Abeya sekere, Sco Lating aid our G, A, distributed the prizes. A Cadeting colourful souvenir was also published to mark the occasion. Two camps were organized at Kilinochchi. The Scouts took part in the

Annual Job Campaign and collected Rs. 900/-. Three of our First Class Scouts T, Rajeswaran, M. Sivarajah and S. Senthurselvan - were among the Seven in the Island selected to participate in the l2th World Jamboree in the U. S. A Two of them are returning to Ceylon in the latter part of this month.
Our Scouts took part in the Annual Scout Rally in September. We were second in the competitions but won the all-round performance Challenge Cup. The Scout Group Committee have always been of grea. assistance to us. Messrs. S. Muttucumaran and W. S. Subramaniam are in charge of the Scouts. Mr. R. S. Sivanesarajah is in charge of the Cubs.
Both our Senior Cadets and Junior Cadets attended the Annual Camp at Diyatalawa, the former accom. panied by Lieut S Parameswaran and the latter by Mr P. Ehamparam
Our Prefects have learnt to take a share in the running of the School and help in the discipline, by seeing to it that pupils move about in Prefects' Coliaci school in orderly manner, and looking after the behaviour of theschool during recess and helping in our social life. Under the leadership of K Senathirajah, the Senior Prefect, they are functioning effectively and have earned the regard of the enti e School.
The O. B. A. is continuing to be active and interested in our welfare. It organized a complimentary dinner to one of our most distinguished The O. B. A. Old Boys, Hon'ble Tustice V. Sivasupramaniam, who paid a visit to the College and addressed our students at a special assembly. The Colombo branch has been revived with an annual

general meeting held recently. With fresh blood in the Executive Committee it is expected to strengthen
its ranks and work more devotedly for the welfare of its Alma Mater.
The P. T. A. held its annual general meeting during the second term this year, but the attendance was poor. Parents have a lot more reason to The P. T. A. attend such meetings today when vast changes in their children's education are being contemplated. We cannot over-emphasize the role played by understanding parents in Our work here The Executive Committee, however, is alert to its res. ponsibilities and is planning to do something Construc. tive. We would like to refer to two growing tenden. cies among students and enlist parental Cooperation against them. One is the habit of wasting much time fin bus travel and getting late to school and the other is Changing subjects in the scien Ce stream Without fore thought and teachers' guidance.
J. S. C. Examination 1966, 63 students were suc. cessful in the J. S. C. Examination Conducted by the N. P. T. A. in November 1966 Examination Results. This included one first division, 57 second division and lO third
division passes.

28 students Cained admission to the University of Ceylon - Engineering 15, Arts 6, Medicine , Physical Science 3, and Agriculture l... In the G. C. E. (AL) number of admissions to the Faculty of Hჭe.g. "66 Engineering we have again come first in the Island. Among those admitted to this Faculty were two who had obtained three distinctions each. There were sixteen distinctions in all of which ten were in Applied Mathematics.
At the Final Examination for Medical Degrees held at Peradeniya & Colombo in July this year two of our Old Boys were among the six who passed in the se cond class. We congratulate Messrs. S. Eram pamoorthy and K Santhirasegaram on their performance and wish them Continued Success. We also Congratulate Mr: S. Thiruvarudchel van and Mr. S Selvalingam On winning the Govt. Scholarship for post Graduate studies in En. gineering at the London Imperial College of Science and Technology
Before I finish this Report I wish to express how grateful I am to all those who have worked closely with me in the running of the school - to Thanks all members of the teaching staff and in particular to the Senior masters who have shouldered special tasks, to the clerks and to all the other mem. bers of the non teaching staff for their unfailing cooperation. We are also thankful to the Director of Education of the Region, to the Chief Education Officer, to the Circuit Education Officer and other officials for their courtesies and help. To all parents, Old Boys, and well - wishers who have responded to our invitation, we tender our grateful thanks.

Let me close on a note that seems appropriate to an occasion graced by one of our eminent Old Boys. Jaffna Hindu today stands in the forefront of the secon. dary schools in the island. It can always be proud of its sons who have set its tone and created its tra. ditions. Let me confine myself to the hope that in the years ahead Jaffna Hindu College will not fail to adjust itself to the changing pattern of demand, but will continue to set its sights high, encourage hard work, and seek joy in change and happiness in achievement.
