எங்கள் நல்வாழ்விலே நீங்கள் கொண்டுள்ள சிரத்தையும், நாம் மேற்கொள்ளும் முயற்சிக ளனைத்திற்கும் நீங்கள் அளித்துவரும் ஊக் கமும் என்றும் நம் உள்ளத்தை நிறைத்திருக்க இத்தகைய பெற் ருேரை, பழைய மாணவர்களை ஆதரவாளர்களைப் பாக்கியவசத்தினுல் பெற்றுள்ளோமென்ற பெருமையோடு இன்று இந்த யாழ்ப்பான இந் துக்கல்லூரியின் பரிசளிப்புவிழாச் சிறக்க இங்கு வீற்றிருக்கும் உங்க எனவரையும் நல்வரவுகூறி வரவேற்கிறுேம்.
உங்களிலநேகர் ஆர்வமிக்க இளைஞர்களாய் வெற்றிக்களிப்பில் மூழ்கித் திளைக்கும் மாணுக்கராய் இககல்லூரியி லிருந்த காலங்களிலே நீங்கள் கட்டிக்காத்துவந்த பாரம்பரியத்தை மேலும் விளங்கச்செய்யும் வகையிலேயே கடந்த ஆண்டிலும் நமது சாதனைகள் அமைந்துளளன என்ற நம்பிக்கையோடுதான் உங்களை வரவேற்கிருேம்.
இக் காரணத்துக்காகவே கடந்த சில ஆண்டுகளாக நடைபெற்று வருவதுபோல் இவவாண்டுப் பரிசளிப்புவிழாவுக்கும் உங்களி லொரு வரையே நமது பிரதமவிரும்தினராக அழைத்திருக்கிருேம். இதுவே ஒரு புதிய வழக்கம், நாம் தொன்றுதொட்டு வழங்கிவரும் வழக்கத் தோடு இதனையும் சேர்த்துத் தொடர்ந்தும் இவ்வழக்கத்தைக் கடைப் பிடித்து வருவதே பொருத்தமுடையதாகும் என்று இங்கே துணிந்து கூற விழைகின் ருேம், -
இனி, பரம்பரையான பழக்கம் என்றல் ஒருவர் அதற்கு அடிமை யாகிவிடவும்கூடும். ஆகையால் நாமதனை ஒரோவழி மீறுவதும் நல்ல தென எண்ணினுேம். முன்பெல்லாம் இத்தகைய பரிசளிப்புவிழாவுக்கு எவரைப் பிரதமவிருந்தினராக அழைக்க விரும்பினுேமோ அவருடைய பட்டம் படிப்பு முதலாம் சாதனைகளைப்பற்றியே முக்கியமாகக் கவ னித்துவந்தோம். ஆணுல் இவ்வாண்டு நாங்கள் அவ்வழக்கத்தை மீறி

கூப்பி ரெவேற்கின்ருேம். தம்மைச் சேர்ந்தவர்களிடையே ஒருவர் உயர்மதிப்பும் பெருமையும் அடையவேண்டுமானுல் அவர் தமது பள் ளிப்படிப்பு முடிந்தபின் உயர்கல்வியையே நாடவேண்டும் என்பது சம் பிரதாயம். இவ்வழக்கத்தை மீறி நின்ற ஒருவரே இன்று நமது மத்தி யில் வீற்றிருக்கும் திருவாளர் K C, தங்கராஜா அவர்கள்.
ஐய, சேவைஊடணர்ச்சியினுலும் அபிமானச் சிறப்பினுலும் நிறைந்து விளங்கும் ஆயிரக்கணக்கான எங்கள் பழைய மாணவருள் முன்னணி யில் திகழ்பவருள்ளும் முதன்மையான வர்களுள் ஒருவர் என்ற முறை யிலேயே தங்களுக்கு நல்வரவு கூறுகின்ருேம், இக்கல்லூரியின் வளர்ச் சிக்கும் பல்வேறுவகைப்பட்ட வசதிகள் சேவைகள் என்பனவற்றுக் கும் இன்றியமையாது வேண்டப்பட்ட நிதியைத் திரட்டுவதற்கேற்ற மார்க்கங்களை வகுப்பதில் தாங்கள காட்டிய திறமையை எவருமே மறக்க முடியாது. அதுபோலவே, கொழும்பு இந்துக்கல்லூரியின் தாப கர்களுள் ஒருவராயும் வித்யோதய பல்கலைக் கழகத்து ஆளுநர் சபைக்கு (Board of Regents) அமைந்த ஓர் அங்கத்தவராயு மிருந்து நல்கிவரும் தன்னலமற்ற உழைப்புக்களின் மூலம் தாங்கள், எங்கள் சமூகத்தவரும் நமது நாடும் கல்வியினுல் மேன்மையுறவேண்டு
மென்ற தனியாத ஆர்வம் கொண்டிருக்கிறீர்கள் என்ற உண்மையை
யும் எவரும் அறிவர்.
இங்ங்னமாக, தங்களிடம் கொண்ட நன்றியால்மாத்திரமே நாங்கள் உங்களுக்கன்பு பூண்டுள்ளோ மென் ருல் கயது சுயநலமே மேலோங்கத் தங்களிடம் குடிகொண்டுள்ள கல்லியல்புகள் பலவற்றை நாம் மறக் தவராவோம். அடக்கத்தோடு கூடிய தன்னம்பிச் கை, எளிமையான வாழ்விலும் திட்டங்களை வகுக்கும் விசால சிந்தனை, கலைகளிலன்றி மனிதாபிமான விவகாரங்களைக் கையாள்வதையே கலையாகக்கொண்டு அதில் தாங்கள் பெற்றுள்ள திறமை, ஆகிய இவ்வரிய பண்புகளை நாம் என்றுமே மறக்க முடியாது. அரசாங்கப் பணிகள் என்ற சுவை யற்ற சேவையை ஒருபுறத் தொதுக்கிவிட்டுத் தனிப்பட்ட முயற்சி சியில் துணிந்துகின்று தாங்கள் ஒரு கூட்டுத்தாபன மொன்றுக்குத் தலைமைதாங்க நேர்ந்ததற்கும் இன்றியமையாத ஒரு சமயத்தில் அத் தலைமையை ஏற்றதனுல் அக்கூட்டுத்தாபனம் மறருெரு "பேப்பர் புலி யாகிச் சுருண்டு விழுந்து முடிவெய்தாமல் தப்பிட் பிழைத்ததற்கும் அவ் வரிய பண்புகளன் ருே காரணம யமைந்தன.
இவை யாவும் நமது கல்லூரியில் இப்பொழுது ப்யின்றுவரும் சந்ததியினர்க்கு மாத்திரமன்றி இனிகிேல் வரும் சந்ததியினர்க்கும்

ஓர் எடுத்துக்காட்டாய்த் திகழவேண்டியனவாகும் மக்களின் உடல் நோய்க்கு மருந்தளித்துவந்த தமது தந்தையார் சிற்றம்பலம், பாட்ட னுர் கந்தப்பிள்ளை முப்பாட்டனர் இராமுப்பிள்ளை ஆகிய பெரியார்க ளுடைய வாழ்க்கையிலும், கல்வி கேள்வியிற் சிறந்து கற்றவர்க்கும் கறபிக்கும் ஆற்றல்வாய்ந்து இலக்கணச்சாமியார் எனற சிறப்புப்பெய ரைப் பெற்றுத் திகழ்ந்த முத்துக்குமாரசுவாமித் தம்பிரானுகிய தமது மாமனுருடைய வாழ்க்கையிலும் கண்ட சிறந்த ப ண் புக ளே இளமைக் காலத்திலிருந்தே தாமும் பின்பற்றிவந்திராவிட்டால் நமது பிரதம விருந்தினரவர்கள் இன்றுள்ள நிலையை எய்தியிருத்த லரிது. ஆகையால் இவர்களுடைய பண்புகளை நமது இளைய சமுதாயமும் பின்பற்றி உயர்வடையும் என்ற நம்பிக்கை வீண்போகாது. அப்பெரியார்களுடைய பெயர்களோடு இவருடைய அருமைத் தமயியார் டாக்டர் K C ஷண்முகரத்தின மவர்களுடைய பெயரும் நமது மான வர்களுக்குப் பரிசுகளை உதவும் பிரமுகர்களுடைய வரிசையில் இவ் வறிக்கையின் பின் இணைப்பாக எப்பொழுதுமே சேர்க்கப்பட்டுவருவதும் பொருத்தமானதேயாகும். பொதுஜன உபகாரிகளைக்கொண்ட இக் குடும்பத்தை நமது கல்லுரியோடு என்றும் பிணைத்துவைக்க நுண் ணியதேயானுலும் இது பலமிக்கதோ ரடையாளமாகும்.
இவ்விழாச் சிறக்க நமக்கொரு கல்விருந்தாயிங்கு வந்து எம் மைக் கெளரவித்தமைக்காக நமது மனப்பூர்வமான நன்றியறிதலைத் தெரிவித்துக்கொள்கிருேம். சர்வகலாசாலைப் பட்டத்தினுல் பெருமை யடையும் ஒரு சிறப்பினைப் பொருட்படுத்தாவிடினும வாழக்கையிலே தமது பெருந்தன்மைக் கொரு சந்ததித் தொடரை வளரச்செய்தற் கேற்ற இல்லறச் சிறப்பையும் மறுத்து ஒரு பிரமசாரியாகவே இருந்து வந்துள்ளாரென்ற நமது மனக்குறையை இங்கே மறைக்க முடிய வில்லே, ஆனுல் திருவாளர் தங்கராசா அவர்களுடைய வாழ்விலே கூட்டுத்தாபனம், கம்பெனி, கூடஉள்ள சமூகம், கல்லூரி என்பனவே அவருடைய மனை மாட்சியின் நன்கலன்களாக விளங்குமபோது அந்த மனக்குறையே மகிழ்ச்சியாகப் பரிணமிக்கிறது.
தெய்வச்செயல் வந்து குறுக்கிடும்போது பழக்கம் வழக்கம் என் பன எல்லாம் ஒதுங்கிநிற்கவேண்டியதே நியதி திருமதி குமாரசுவாமி யவர்கள் நமது விழாவில் கலந்து இங்கு பிரசன்னபா யிருந்து - இக்கல்லூரிக் கமைந்ததோ ரங்கமாய், நீண்டகாலம் அதிபராய் விளங்கி, அரு பணியாற்றிவந்த - தமது அருந்துணைவரின் பெயரால் விளங்கு மிவ்விழாப் பெருமண்டபத்திலே நமது மாணவர்க்குப் பரிசில்களே வழங்க மனமுவந்து வந்திருப்பதும் தெய்வச் செயலேயாகும். உயர்

திரு குாேரசுவாமியவர்களுடைய திட்டத்தில் உருவாகி, அவர்களுடைய பருமகனும் இலங்கைப் பல்கலைகழகத்தி லப்பொழுது பொறியியல் துறையில் பணியாற்றிவந்தவருமான டாக்டர் செல்வநாயகம் அவர்க ளுடைய நுண்ணறிவுத் திறத்தினுல் கவர்ச்சியோடு பொலிவது இம் மண்டபம், இதிலே நிகழும் இப்பரிசளிப்பு விழாவில் திருமதி குமார சுவாமியவர்கள் பங்குகொள்வது மிகவும் பொருத்தமான ஒரு சம்பவ பாகும். திருவாளா குமாரசுவாமியவர்கள் தமது காலத்திலே கல்விச் சீா திருத்த விஷயங்களில் ஒரு தீர்க்கதரிசியா யிருந்தா ரென்பதைப் பின் வந்த சீர்திருத்தங்கள் இன்று நிரூபித்துவிட்டன, அவருடைய அருமை பெருமைகளே நாமெல்லாம் நினைவுகூர்ந்து மகிழும்வகையிலே இங்கு வந்து எம்மைச் சிறப்பித்த திருமதி குமாரசுவாமி யவர்களுக்கு நாம் என்றும் நன்றியறிதலுள்ளவர்களா யிருக்கின்றுேம்
இப்பிரமுகர்களும் இவர்கள் வகுத்த திட்டங்களும் இங்ஙனம் நல் லினக்கமாகச் சங்கமிப்பது இன்னும் ஏதோ, நமது புலனுக்கெட்டாத ஒரு திட்டம் உருவாகிவருகிற தென்பதையே வெளிப்படுத்துகிறது அப் படியால்ை புகழ் என்னும் கோயிலின் மண்டபத்தை யடைவதற்குச் சர்வகலாசாலைக் கட்டடங்களுக்கிடையே அலைந்துதிரிவதைத் தவிர்த்த நம் பிரதமவிருந்தினர் நமக்குக் காட்டிய கொள்கையும் குறிக்கோ ளுமே சிறந்தன என்று ஏற்றுப் போற்றமலிருக்க முடியாது கலா சாரத்திலும் உள்ளப் பண்பாட்டிலும் பூரணத்துவமடைய லெளகிக முன்னேற்றமே முக்கிய இடத்தைப் பெற்றுள்ளது என்று மதிக்கப் பட்டுவரும் இக் காலத்திலே பட்டம் படிப்புக்களுக்கும் பாண்டிததியம் புலமைகளுக்கும் தொடர்ந்தும் முதலிடம் கொடுத் துவருவது பொருத் தமாயிராது தொழிலைச் செய்து எப்படி என்பதைத் தெரிந்திருந் தும் அதனைத் தாமே செய்ய முடியாதவர்களே, அதனை உண்மை யில் செய்யக்கூடிய ஆலறலுள்ளவர்களுக்கும் செய்பவர்களுக்கும் அதிபதிகளாக நெடுநாள் இருந்துவிட்டார்கள், ஆணுல் இன்று நிலைமை மாறிவிட்டது. பொறியியலறிஞர்கள் அதிகாரிகள் என்பவர்களோடு கூடவே நுண்வினைஞரும் தொழில்புரிவோரும் தமக்குரிய மதிப்பைப் பெற்றுவர முடியாதென்றல் பொருளுற்பத்தி மக்கட்பெருக்கத்துக்கு ஈடுகொடுக்க முடியாமற் போய்விடும். அதனுல் ஏற்படும் அநாதரவான நிலையைத் தவிர்க்க நாம் பெற்றுள்ள செல்வமும் நமக்குப் போதாமற் போய்விடும்
கொழும்புக்கும் பேராதனைக்கு மளிக்கப்பட்டுவந்த கெளரவ மொரு புற மிருக்க, அம்பாறைக்கும் கட்டுபெத்தைக்கும் உள்ள முக்கியத்து வத்தை உயர்த்தி வைத்தது விவேக விடிவுக்கான ஓர் ஒளிக்கதிராய் விளங்குகிறது. எனினும் கொலனியாட்சிக் காலத்து மஞ்சட்காமாலே

- அதாவது உயர்கல்வியினுற் பெறும் பதவிகளும் உடைகலங்கள் உத்தியோகங்களுமே முக்கியமானவை = பணவருவாயைத் தர வல்லவை என்ற கொள்கை இப்போழுதும் ஓரளவுக்கு இருந்துவருவதனுல் அந்த விடிவுகாலத்து ஒளிக்கதிர் சிறிது மங்கலாகவே தெரிகிறது.
யாழ்ப்பான இந்துக்கல்லூரியைச் சேர்ந்த நாங்கள் இந்த அடி வானத்திருளே அகற்றிவிட்டோமென்றே அல்லது வழக்கமான சுவ டேறிய பாதையை விட்டு விலகிவிட்டோ மென்றுதானுமே கூற முடி யாது. பொறியிய லறிஞர்கள் மருத்துவத் துறையினர் பட்டதாரிகள் என்றுதான் உற்பத்திசெய்துவருகிருேம். ஆயினும் இத்தகைய தகுதி களைப் பெறத் தவறித் தவிக்கும் அநேகருடைய எதிர்காலம் என்ன வாகப்போகிறது? எனவே நாம் நமது சாதனைகளிலே திருப்தி யடைந்து நிம்மதியாயிருக்க முடியவில்லை. கல்வியானது உள்ளத் தோடும் அறிவினுேடும் நின்றுவிடாமல் உழைப்பினுேடும் சம்பந்தப் பட்டாலன்றிப் பூரணத்துவமடையாது என்ற உண்மையில் உறுதியான நம்பிக்கையுள்ளவர்களா யிருக்கிருேம். ஆகையால் இதுவரைகாலமும் ஆற்றிய பணியைவிடப் பொருத்தமாகவும் பயனுள்ளதாகவும் சேவை யாற்றக்கூடிய வகையிலே சமூகத்தின் தேவைக்கேற்ற கல்விச் சீர்திருத் தங் காணக்கூடிய ஒரு காலத்தை எதிர்பார்க்கிருேம்.
பொதுக்கல்வி பாதிக்கப்படாவகையில் அவசியமான பாடத் தெரிவுகளை மாணவர் மேற் கொள்வதற்கான நடவடிக்கைகள் உயர் வகுப்பு நிலயிலே எடுக்கப்படல் இன்றியமையாததாகின்றது. போதிய நில வசதி யில்லாமையால் நாம் விவசாயத்தை அறிமுகப்படுத்த இய லாத நிலையில் இருக்கிருேம் ஆணுல் வர்த்தக வகுப்பைத் தொடங்கு தற்கு எமக்கு வாய்ப்புக்கள் தரப்படல்வேண்டும். பாடசாலையும் பல் கலைக் கழகமும் அளிக்கும் அறிவுப் பேருணவு மக்களுக்குச் சிந்தனைச் சுதந்திரம் அளிப்பதற்குப் பதிலாக அவர்களின் ஆர்வப் பகயினை அடககி விடுவதாய் உள்ளது. குறிப்பிட்ட சில உத்தியோகங்களை இலட்சியமாய் வைத்து மாணவரை அவற்றிற்குத் தயார் செய்வதை விடுத்து, மிகப் பரந்த விஞ்ஞான தொழில்நுட்பப் பின்னணியில் நாம் அறிவை வழங்கல் வேண்டும். எமது பாடசாலைகளில் எவற்றை எவ்விதம் கற்பித்தல் வேண்டும் என்பதைப் பல்கலைக் கழகமே மிகுதி யும் வற்புறுத்திக் கட்டுப்பாடு விதிக்கின்றது. எனவே உயர் வகுப் புப் பாடத் திட்டம் மீளவும் வகுக்கப்படுவதோடு இப் பிரிவிற்கேற்ற பரீட்சைகளும் நடாத்தப்படுவது மிக அவசியமாகும். எமது மாணவரின் உடல், உள ஆரோக்கிய கலன்களுக்காவதேனும் நாம் இதனே மேற் கொள்வது அவசியம்,

பொதுப் பரீட்சைகளில் மறுமுறையும் பாராட்டத்தக்க பேறுபேறு களே அடைந்தமையை மிகுந்த மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் அறியத்தருகின்ருேம் 1967 இல் நடந்த உயர்தர பரீட்சையில் 32 மாணவர் நான்கு பாடங் களிலும் 31 மாணவர் மூன்று பாடங்களிலும் சித்தியடைந்தனர். இவர்களில் இலங்கைப் பல்கலைக் கழகத்திற்கும், கட்டுப்பெத்த நுண் கலைக் கல்லூரிக்கும் எல்லாமாக 42 மாணவர் தெரிவுபெற்றனர்; விஞ் குானப்பகுதியில் பொறியியலுக்கு ஒன்பதின் மரும், நுண்கலைக் கல்லு ரிக்கு எழுவரும், பெளதிக விஞ்ஞானத்திற்கு ஒன்பதின் மரும், வைத் தியத்திற்கு கால்வரும், பல் வைத்தியத்திற்கு ஒருவரும் உயிரியல், விலங்குமருத்துவம், விவசாயம் ஆகிய துறைகளுக்கு நால்வருமாக 34 மாணவரும், கலைப்பகுதியில் 8 மாணவரும் தெரியப்பட்டனர். பொறியியலில் தேர்வுபெற்ற மாணவர் தொகையையும், பல்கலைக்கழ கம், கட்டுப்பொத்த நுண்கலைக் கல்லூரி ஆகியவற்றிற்குத் தெரியப் பட்டவரின் முழுத்தொகையையும் நோக்கும்போது, வடபகுதியில் தொடர்ந்து பல ஆண்டுகளாய் எமது கல்லூரியே பல்கலைக் கழகத் தேர்வுகளில் மேலும் ஒரு தடவை முதலிடம் வகிக்கும் உண்மை புலனுகும்.
க. பொ. த (G. C. F. சாதாரண தரம்) 1967
1967 ஆவணியில் நடைபெற்ற க. பொ. த (G, C B சாதா ரணதரம்) பரீட்சையில் 6 பாடங்கள் சித்தியெய்தியோர் தொகை 38, ஐந்து பாடங்கள் சித்தியடைந்தோர் தொகை 10, 1967 மார்கழிப் பரீட்சையில் 18 மாணவர் ஆறு பாடங்களிலோ, அவற்றிலும் அதிக மான படங்களிலோ, சித்தியடைந்தனர். 44 மாணவர் ஐந்து பாடங் களிலே சித்திபெற்றனர். இப்பரீட்சையிற் கிடைத்த விசேட சித்தி கள் 52. இவற்றுள் கணிதத்திலே கிடைத்தவை 42.
எட்டாம் வகுப்பு (வ, மா. ஆ. ச. - N. P. T. A.) பரீட்சை 196
1967 இல் வடமாகாண ஆசிரியர் சங்கம் நடாத்திய இப்பரீட் சையில் முதற்பிரிவில் 9 மாணவரும், இரண்டாம் பிரிவில் 25 மாணவ ரும், மூன்றும் பிரிவில் 26 மாணவரும் சித்தியடைந்தனர். இவர்க அளில் ஒருவர் திறமைச்சான்றிதழும், ஒருவர் குடியியல் பாடப் புரிசும்

(OII)DoT. திறமைச் சான்றிதழ் பெற்ற மாணவர் மற்றைய லாப் பரீட்சார்த்திகளுள்ளும் மிகக கூடிய புள்ளி பெற்றமையும் இங் குக் குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.
புதிதாய்ச் சேர்வோர்
இன்றுள்ள மாணவரின் முழுத்தொகை 1323. இத்தொகையில் ஏறக்குறைய 650 அடுத்த ஆண்டு தைமாதத்தில் விஞ்ஞானப் பிரிவு களுக்குச் செல்லும், இதன் காரணமாக ஆய்வுகூட வசதிகளும், விஞ் ஞானபாட ஆசிரியர் தொகையும் அதிகரித்தல் அவசிய தேவையாகி விடும் பெற்றேரின் வற்புறுத்தலால் நாம் சேர்க்கக்கூடிய அளவி லும் அதிக தொகையான மாணவரைச் சேர்த்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிருேம். அடுத்த ஆண்டு பங்குனியில் பயிற்சிப் பரீட்சைக்குச் செல்லும் உயர் தர வகுப்பு மாணவர், பரீட்சைப் பெறுபேறு வெளியாகும் வரையிற் கல்லூரியிலே தொடர்ந்து இருக்கவேண்டிய நிலையில் இது ஒரு மேலதிக பிரச்சனையாகின்றது.
மாறும் பான்மைகள்
வரையறுக்கப்பட்ட எண்ணிக்கையிலாயினும் 6 ஆம் வகுப்பைத் தொடர்ந்து வைத்திருப்பதாகிய இணக்கத்திற்கு நாம் உட்பட்டிருந்தா லும், யாழ்ப்பாணம் இந்துக்கல்லூரி சிரேஷ்ட உயர்தர கல்லூரியா வதை அங்கீகரிப்பதாகிய கட்டத்தை அடுத்த ஆண்டில் நாம் திட்ட வட்டமாய்ப் பெற்றுவிடுவோம்.

துரை, எம் கல்லூரியிலே கடமையாற்றித் திடீரென ஏற்பட்ட நோய் காரணமாய் மறையு வரையான குறுகிய காலத்தில், மததிய வகுப் புகளின் திறமைவாய்ந்த ஆங்கிலபட ஆசிரியா, தாம எனப்தை பித்துவிட்டார். கல்லூரியின் விளையாட்டுததுறையிலே நன்கு பிர சித்தமான திரு ஏகாமபரததின் திடீர்மறைவு முன்னேயதிலும் கூடிய அர்ச்சியை அவரது சகாக்களாகிய மக்கு அளிதததோடு, கல்லூ ரிக்கு வெளியிலுள்ள பெருந்தொகையான அவரின் நண்பர்களுக்கும் தா கொணுத கவலையை அளித்திருக்கிறது. கல்லூரிக் கூட்டங்க ளில் அண்ணுருக்கு எமது இறுதி வணக்கங்களைச் செலுத்தி அவரை நினவுகூர்ந்தோம். இவ்வாசிரியர்கள் இருவரதும குடுமபங்களுக்கும் எமது ஆழ்ந்த அநுதாபங்களே இவ்விடத்தில் சமர்ப்பிக்கின்ருேம்.

வடமாகாண ஆசிரியர் சங்கம் நடாத்திய பேச்சுப் போட்டியில் நாம் அதி மேற் பிரிவினர்க்கான தமிழ், ஆங்கிலப் பேச்சுக்களின் முத லிடங்களையும், கட்டுரைப் போட்டியில் முதலிடத்தையும் பெற்றுேம். இப்பரிசுகளில் முதலிரண்டையும பெற்றதோடனறி ஈழநாடு ஸ்தா பனம் யாழ்ப்பாண மாநகர சபையோடு இணைந்து நடாத்திய குடிமை, வாரக் கட்டுரைப் போட்டியிலும் முதலிடத்தைச் சுவீகரித்த N. ரீகாந்தாவின் சாதனையை நாம் சிறப்பாக இவ்விடத்தில் குறித்தல் வேண்டும். யாழ் மாநகரசபையால் இவ்வாரத்தையொட்டி நடாத்தப் பட்ட நகரச் சுத்தீகரிப்பியக்கத்தில் எமது கல்லூரியிலிருந்து ஏறக் குறைய 150 மாணவர், 6 ஆசிரியர்களின் மேற்பார்வையில கலந்து கொண்டனர்.
விளே யாட்டுக்கள்
விளையாட்டுக்களைப் பொறுத்தவரையில் இவ்வாண்டு எமக்கு அவ் வளவு சாதகமாய் இருக்கவில்லை. கடந்த சில ஆண்டுகளிலும் பார்க்கக் கிறிக்கெற்றில் இம்முறை நாம் சிறந்து விளங்கினுேம், நாம் விளை யாடிய ஏழு முதற் பிரிவு கிறிககெற் ஆட்டங்களில் இரண்டில் வென் ருேம். இரண்டில் சமமானுேம் ஒா ஆட்டம் ஒட்ட எண்ணிக்கையில் சமமாய் முடிந்தது. இரண்டு ஆட்டங்களில் தோற்ருேம். இரண்டாம்

பிரிவினர் வீளையாடிய ஆட்டங்கள் இரண்டிலும் சமநிலை கிடைத்தது. எமது கிறிக்கெற் ஆட்ட வீரர்களிலே முதறயிரிவைச் சார்ந்த மூவர் பிரதேச கிறிககெற் குழுவிற்குத் தெரியப்பட்டமையை மிகுந்த பெருமை யோடு அறியத்தருகின றேD. இதக் குழு இலங்கைப் பாடசாலைகளின் கிறிககெற் சங்கத்தினுல் தெரிடப்பட்டதாகும். யாழ்ப்பாணப் பாட சாலைகளின் கிறிக்கெற' குழுவிற்கு எமது கல்லூரிக முழுவின் தலைவ ராகிய பி. தர்மரத்தினம் தலைமை தாங்கியது மேலும் பெருமை சேர்த் தது எமது கல்லூரியினின்றும் தெரியப்பட்ட மற்ற வீரர்கள் வி. சினனராசா, வி. உதயலிங்கம் ஆகிய இருவருமாவர். இம் மூவரும் திறமையோடு விளையாடித் தம் குழுவினர்க்கு மிக அதிக ஒட்டங்களைப் பெற்றுக் கொடுத்தனர்.
இரண்டாம் பிரிவுக் கிரிக்கெற் போட்டிக்கெனத் தெரியப்பட்ட குழுவில் எமது குழுவின் தலைவராகிய விபுலானந்தா இடம் பெற்ருர்,

யாழ்ப்பாணப் பாடசாலைகளின் விளையாட்டுச் சங்கத்தோடு சில அடிப்படை வேறுபாடுகள் ஏற்பட்ட மை காரணமாக அச்சங்கம் ஒழுங்கு செய்த உதை பந்தாட்டப் போட்டிகளினின்றும் ஆரம்ப கட்டத்திலேயே மிகுந்த தயக்கத்தோடு நாம் விலக நேரிட்டது. இதன் காரணமாகச் சகோ தரக் கல்லூரிகள் சிலவற்றுடன் சிநேகயூர்வமான போட்டிகளை ஒழுங்கு செய்து விளையாடுவதோடு அமைய வேண்டியதாயிற்று. எனினும் முத லாம், இரண்டாம், மூன்றம் பிரிவு உதைபந்தாட்டக் குழுக்களின் சாதனை கள் உண்மையிற் பாராட்டிற்கு உரியவையே, விளையாட்டுப் போட்டிகள்
திரு. A. ஆசிரியர்களதும், பழைய மாணவர்களதும், நண்பர்களதும் மனப் பூர்வமான உதவியோடு எம் மாண ரது விளையாட்டுத் திறமைகள் நன்கு பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டால் மேலும் சுடர்விட்டுப் பிரகாசிக்கு என்பது உறுதி. கல்வித் துறையிலே திறமையாகச் செயற்படுதற்குப் பின் னணியாக ஒரு பாடசாலையின் விளயாட்டுத் துறையும் அமைதல் வேண்டும் என நாம் நம்புவதால் விளையாட்டுக்கத்தை நாம் மேலும் வளர்த்தேயாக வேண்டும். விளையாட்டுக்களும், கல்வித்திறனும் ஒன்று சேரல் இயலாது என்பது ஒரு முரனுரையேயாகும். சர் ரணியம்
திரு. S முத்துக்குமாரன் தலைமையில் எமது முதல் வகுப்புச் சாரணர் எண்மர் கல்கத்தாவில் நடைபெற்ற அகில இந்திய ஜம்போ ரியில் இலங்கைப் பிரதிநிதிகளாய்க் கலந்துகொண்டனர். இலங்கையி லிருந்து சர்வதேச ஜம்போரிகள் இரண்டில் ஒரேயாண்டில் (1967) கலந்து கெ ன் டு இலங்கையில் தனிச்சிறப்புற்ற சாரனர் குழு எமது கல்லுரிச் சாரணர் குழுவேயாகும். வருடாந்தக் கூலிக த வேல இயக்கத்தின்போது நாம் 962| டுபா திரட்டிகுேம். இதுவே இப் பிரதேசத்தலே திரட்டப்பட்ட மிக்ககூடிய தொகை. எமது பழைய மாணவரின் உதவியோடு வவுனியாவில் ஒரு பொதுப் பாடி வாசத்தை யும் ஒழுங்கு செய்தோம். இலங்கைப் பலகலைக் கழகப் பொறியியற் பிரிவைச் சேர்ந்த, எமது பழைய மாணவர் கலாநிதி S நகுலேஸ் வ ரஜனப் பிரதம விருந்தினராய்க் கொண்டு வருடாந்த சாரணர் தினத் தைக் கொண்டாடினுேம், திருவாளர்கள்: S முத்துக் குமாரன் N நல்லையா, V. மாணவ தலைவர் சபை
நாளாந்த பாடசாலைக் கடமைகள் ஒழுங்காய் நடைபெறுவதில் மாணவ தலைவர் சபை தன் பங்கைச் செய்துள்ளது. S மகேந்திரன் தலைமையில் இயங்கும் மாணவ தலைவர்கள திறமையாய்ச் செயல் புரிந்து கல்லுரிச் சமூகத்தின் மதிப்பினைப் பெற்றிருக்கின்றனர். அவர் களுககு எனது நன்றி.

இவையிரண்டும் கல்லூரி ஆலய, விஞ்ஞான கூடக் கட்டட நிதிச் சேகரிபபிற்காய் இணைந்து இயங்குகின்றன, சில ஆண்டுகளாய் இக் கட்டட அமைப்புத் திட்டம் செயலற்றிருந்தது. பொதுநல உணர்வு வாய்க்கப்பெற்ற பெரியார் திரு R நாகரத்தனம் ஆலயக் கட்டடத் திற்கு மலேசியா சென்று நிதிச் சேகரிப்பதாகிய கடினமான பணியில் ஈடுபட்டமை, பழையமானவர் 1ங்கத்தின் பேரதிர்ஷ்டம் எனலாம். இன் றைய நிலையைநோக்கினுல், அமரர் குமாரசுவாமி (முனஞ ள் அதிபர்) அவர் களின் கனவாகிய ஆலய அமைப்பு அடுத்த ஆண்டிறுதிககுள் கன வாகக் கூடிய சாத்தியக் கூறுகள தெ படுகின்றன. பழைய மான வர் சங்கததினதும், பெற்ருர் ஆசிரியர் சங்கத்தினதும் இணைப்புக்குழு விஞ்ஞான மண்டபத்தின கீழ்த்தளப் பூர்ததிககான நிதியை 2-6' (SID லே சேகரிக்கும் முயற்சியில் மிகுதியும் முனைந்து உழைக்கின்றது. பழைய மாணவர் சங்கக் கொழும்புக் கிளேயும் இம் முயற்சியில ஈடு பட்டுள்ளது எமது போர்க்கையைப் பெறும் பழைய மாணவர், பெற் ஜேர், மறறும் அன்பர்கள், ஒவ்வொருவரும் தாராள மனத்துடன நிதியுதவிசெய்து எமது நோக்கத்தை நிறைவு செய்வர் என நம்புகினருேம்.
விடுதிச் சாலை
விடுதிச்சாலை எப்போதும் போலவே ஆசிரியரதும், மாணவரதும் ஆற்றல் சான்ற சமூகமாய்த தொடர்ந்து இயங்குகின்றது. இளஞ ரின உணவுத் தேவைகளைத் திருப்தீகரமான முறையில் அளிப்பது இன்றைய நிலயில் எளிதான ஒன்றனறு. நாட்டின பொருளாதார வாழ்வின் பலவேறு பின் தங்கல்களுக்கடையிலும் விடுதிச்சாலையை

Ever mindful of the interest that you have shown in our welfare and the encouragement you have extend." ed to us in all our endeavours, we at the Jaffna Hindu College are proud and privileged indeed once again to welcome you all-parents, old boys and well-wishers -- to this our annual Prize Day.
We do so in the hope that our achievements in the past year have been worthy of the traditions built up in the years when many among you, younger
then in spirit and more joyous in success, were students at the school.
It is for this reason that we are glad this year, as in successive years in the recent pist, to have one from among you as our Chief Guest this evening. This in itself is, we venture to suggest, a new tradition Worth fostering.
Yet, for fear tradition may make slaves of us all, we have thought it fit to break with tradition even as we seek to make it. Whereas in the past we were rather particular about the academic antecedents of the one whom we wished to have as our guest of honour, this year we have extended our hand of welcome to one who after leaving School, himself broke with tradition or the belief that one had to seek higher education if one wished to attain a still higher place in the esteem of his fellow men. Such a man is our guest of honour this evening, Mr K. C. Thangarajah.
We welcome you, Sir, first and foremost as an old boy who in loyalty and service to the school has,

among the thousands of its alumni, been first of the foremost. None can, for example, forget the efficiency with which you organised campaigns to collect funds for the expansion of the College and the diversificaof its facilities. Equally well known is your abiding inter. est in the general education of our community and our country as evidenced by your selfless labours as one of the founders of the Colombo Hindu College and a member of the Board of Regents of the Vidyodaya University. But were gratitude the only sentiment to endear you to us it would savour too much of selfinterest on our part and blur our view of several other virtues - self-confidence combined with modesty, ima. ginativeness in planning sist off against simplicity in living, mastery not of the arts but of the art of human relations - that have taken you from humdum ser. vice under government, which in itself was remark. able, through initiative in private enterprise randing from journalism to foreign trade, to the chairmanship of a public corporation which, but for your timely intervention, might have curled up and died like any other 'paper tiger.'
All this, we hope, will prove exemplary to the generation now at school and to the generations to come. Nor can this hope be in vain; for the fact is that our Chief Guest would not be what he is today had he not in his early years begun to cherish what was exemplary in the life of his father, the late Kandapillai Chittampalam and his grand-father, the late Chittampalam Kandapillai, who did so much to heal the sick and of his uncle Sri la Sri Muttu Cumara Thambiran Swamigal also known as 'Ilakkana Swamigal' who read so much to educate even the educated. It is only proper that their names-as also of his brother, the late Dr K. C. Shan. mugaratnam - should ligure so often in the reference to prizes doners appended here to This is a token,

lander yet strong, of the ties that have bound this enerous family of public benefactors to our College.
We thank him, therefore, in all sincerity for honourind our function this evening, thic ulch we can hardly conceal the recret that, while ignoring the glamour of a bachelorhood from a university, he has by persiste ing in the bachelorhood of life refused to carry forWard the lineage of liberality. Such regret transforms itself into its very opposite, joy, the moment one remembers that the concept of family for Mr. Thangarajah has always been broad enough to take in corporation, company, community and college.
Tradition, neverthless, must recede where destiny steps in, And it cannot be anythino less than destiny that has made possible the gracious presence of Mrs Cumaraswamy to give away the prizes in this grand hall that bears the illustrious name of her husband who, as Principal, was for so long so much a part of our school. It cannot be otherwise, for this edifice planned by her husband had for the designing of its impressive extension the expert services of her son-inlaw Dr. Chelvanayakam, then of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Ceylon. To her also we are grateful for adorning this function and refreshing our memories of her revered husband, an educationist whom Subsequent reforms have shown was far ahead of his times.
And if this happy coincidence of persons and projects reνεals a plan koe γond our analysis, one Cannot but fall in lina and refer to the perspective and purpose shown to us by the Career of Our Chief Guest himself.
In an age when material progress has become so inevitably a base for cultural and moral Soundness,

the continued enthronement of the cap and gown, the intellectual and the academic, can find little justifi. cation. The man who knows how a job is to be done but cannot himself do it, has lorded it too long over the man who can do and does the job. But condi tions are so swift in change that unless, for example, the technician and the worker get their due along. side the engineer and the administrator, production cannot keep pace with population. Nor can the wealth produced be adequate to assuage the attendant woe.
The recent enhancement in importance Given to Amparai and Kattubedde as against Peradeniya and Colombo is, however, an indication of the streak of light that presages the dawn of wisdom. But the dawn is still blurred by the jaundiced outlook of a colonial past when the learned professions and the White-Collar Service loomed so large in importar. Ce and were so lucrative in income.
We at Jaffna Hindu do not however presume to have dispelled these murky horizons or to have stepped off the beaten track. We have gone on turning out-with Some measure of success - more and more engineers, doctors and graduates. But we are only too conscious of the bleak future that faces the vast majo. rity that fall by the wayside. We are also, though less painfully but equally firmly, convinced of what has been accepted as axiomatic that education is not complete if it concerns itself with the head and the heart to the exclusion of the hand. Nor are we Smug and satisfied about our achievements.
Hence, we await with hope the day when education will be so reformed as to meet the needs of Society

It is at the secondary education level that proper steps have to be taken in providing the necessary bias without hampering of Course the progress in general education. We are unable to introduce Agriculture the Ordinary Level for lack of land; but we can be provided with facilities to open a commercial class. Both school and university are prescribing a heavy liet which for many people quenches their enthusi18 m in Stead of stimulating their mind. We should aim not so much at producing for specific professions is at Creating individuals in certain broad areas and diving them a wide background of Science and technology. The University exercises a tremendous pressure on what is taught in our Schools and how it is taught. We do therefore plead for a reappraisal of the secondary School curricular content and for a re. scrutiny of our examination syllabus in close consul. tation with the teaching profession if only for the sake of the physical and mental health of our adolesΟ Θη Ig a t S Oh OOI.
Progress of the College
We are happy to report that once again we have
fared very creditably in the public examinations. At the Advanced Level Examination in 1967, 32 students passed in four subjects and 31 in three subjects. Finally 42 students have been successful in gaining admisision to the University of Ceylon and the Ceylon School of Technology at Katubedde. Of these, 34 were qualified in the Sciences - Engineering 9, 7 to the School of Technology, Katubedde, Physical Science 9, Medicine ..., Dental Surgery 1, Biological Science or Veterinary Science or Agriculture 4. Eight students were admitted to the Arts course. In the number of admissions to the Faculty of Engineering and it, the

In the August 1967 examination 38 students passed in six or more subjects and IO in five subjects. It the December 1967 examination 73 students passed in six or more subjects and 44 students passed in five subjects. There were 52 distinctions in all with 42 in Mathemetics. . *
J. S. C, (N. P. l. A ) Examination, November 1967
Nine students obtained First division passes, 28 Second division and 2 Third division passes at the J. S C Examination conducted by the N. P. T. A. in 1957. One was awarded the Merit Certificate and another obtained the subject prize for Civics.
New Admissions
The number on roll now stands at 1323 and we shall have approximately 650 boys studying Science from next year, and our need will be additional laboratory facilities and teaching staff. Because of parental pressure we have been accommodating many more eligible students than we reasonably can, at great inconvenience. There is the added problem. of the AL final year students compelled to stay on till March for their practical tests and thence till the results are out in August.
The Changing Pattern
In spite of the compromise effected for this year to retain standard 6 though in restricted numbers, we have now come to accept the position of Jatina Hindu College as a Senior Secondary School. We have therefore to start from standard 8 and cater to the

needs of students in the age group 15 to 18 +. The implication of the grade 8 being retained here is that we are charged with the responsibility for their Selection for a diversified education from grade 9. Let me repeat the idea that is relevant in the inspiring presence of our Chief Guest. The traditional pattern of education has offen failed to educate the man Of O ti On. Such a man has not infrequently emerged from outside the Secondary School and the Univer
ity,
In any scheme of reorganisation there are two courses open for our College to enable the large number of students clamouring for admission to derive the maximum benefit. One seems to be the conversion of it into a Science College for the gifted children from all areas including scholars. On the other hand, if we are to serve as an area School catering only to those who live round about or have the means to take up residence in the area, it is uneconomic to offer courses in Science to pratically everyone of these students. A COmpromise se erns quite ne Cessary and our doors should be open to the brighter Students from outside as well.
Staff
The College administration is greatly strengthened by the appointment of Mr. K. Suppiah as Deputy Princi. pal and Messrs. V. Subramaniam, A. Saravanamuttu and W. Mahadeva as Sectional Heads in the new scheme of reorganisation. We Congratulate them all and look forward to more co-ordinated team work in the future. In fact for a developed school like ours this set-up is not entirely new as we hava had our Senior Masters handling som se branch oi activity or other.

partment of English, retired after 38 years of devoted service. I certainly must mention his invaluable servi. ces to the school in various fields. A conscientious and effective teacher of English and veteran leader of the teaching profession, he wielded great influence in the general life of the student community with his questioning mind. We are indeboted to him for his wise judgment and guidance and specially for his friendly association with us for a period of 24 years, May he be blessed in the retirement he has so rightly deserved.
It is with deep sorrow that we record the death of two of our very valued teachers. Mr. M. Rajadurai was proving himself to be an efficient teacher of English in the Middle School within the short period he was with us when he succumbed to sudden illness. The demise of Mr. P. Ehamparam, well remembered in the field of sport, was even more shocking and amented widely by his colleagues and friends everywhere. We have paid at school assembly our humble tribute and we offer our deep sympathies to the members of their families.
In our report last year we included an appreciation of the services of Mr. K. Sivakolunthu who served the school as clerk for forty years faithfully, tirelessly and unostentatiously. Little did we realise when we accorded him a fitting farewell early this year that his retired life would come to a sudden end. We shall always treasure the memory of this gentleman whom destiny seemed to have marked off almost solely to the desk of devoted duty for his old school.
We are happy to welcome Mr. N. Nalliah - Mathematics trained teacher from Palaly Teachers' College . to Our teaching statt snd Mr. Ä. Shanmugam, Clerk, to our non-teaching staff. We must also express our gratitude to Mr. M. Mahalingam who helpsd us out in

The School at Leisure
Believing that a man is not a whole man until he has learned to use his leisure properly, the school
has striven to point the way to boys by the provision of a library, workshop and clubs and societies of many kinds, Books and magazines are periodically added
to the library which is not only a sanctuary for the pupil in search of quietness but also provides him with a wide choice of books for reading at home. We are doing our best to keep the library and reading room attractive and effective.
Our Clubs and Societies carried on their usual round of activities. The Y. M. H. A. , the Tamil Peravai, the Historical and Civic Association, the Geographical Society, the Science Association, the AL Union, the Radio Club and the Garden Clb - all these functioned smoothly and efficiently. The Y. M. H. A made its mark once again in helping to organise the two-day celebrations of the All Ceylon Sekkilar Maniram on a or and scale. The All Union created history when they introduced toasts in Tamil at their Annual Dinner held
under the patronage of a devoted alumnus, Mr. M. Pasupathy, Accountant in the Ministry of Education.
In the N. P. T. A contests we won the first place in Post-Senior English Elocution, Post-Senior Tamil Elocution and Tamil Essay. Special mention must be made of N. Srikantha who won not only the first two prizes mentioned above but also the first prize in the Essay Contest organised by the Eela Nadu" during the Civic Week conducted by the Jaffna Municipal Council. About 150 of our students participated in the Council's

Games
This year has not been too good for us in regard te garnes. At Cricket we fared better than we have been able to do for quite some time. Of the seven
first eleven matches we played, we won two, drew
two, tied one and lost two Both the second eleven matches we played ended in a draw. It is with pride
that we record that three of our players were select
ed to represent the Jaffna Schools in the Zonal Cricket Competition ordanised by the Ceylon Schools Cricket Association. We had also the added distinction of having our Captain, P. Dharmaratnam, elected to cap. tain the Jaffna Schools Team. The other players were V. Sinnarasa and S. Udayalingam. All three did well and Canae out as the first three top scorers, Scoring nearly half the total put up by the Jaffna Schools
In the Junior Zonal Competition we were represented by A. Wipulananda, our second eleven captain
In football we were compelled very much against our will to confine ourselves to friendly matches as we had to withdraw from the tournament run by the J. S. S. A. almost at the initial stage when we could not see eye to eye with them on fundamental issues in regard to the conduct of the tournament. In all the matches we played in the three divisions our performance was generally creditable.
Athletics
Our Inter-House Athletic Meet was held under the patronage of Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Kanagaratnam. It was as usual a colourful function well attended by parents, old boys and well wishers. Nagalingam House became the champions and Sabapathy were the runners-up.

This meet was organised by the Central Zone Athletic Association. It was only a qualifying meet fo select athletes for the All Ceylon Public S h cols Athletic Meet. T. Gengtharan shone with three first places in the ll O metre, long jump, and high jump. He is qualified to represet our school at the Public Schools Athletic Meet
With the talent available among our boys and with the willing assistance of helpers from the staff, old boys and friends we can achieve much more. We must do more for sport for we believe that the school at play is the perfect foil to the school at work. To us it is a heresy that games and scholar. ship cannot go tooether,
Scouting
Eight of our first class Scouts led by Mr. S. Muthu. kumaran represented Ceylon át the 5th All India Jamboree held at Cloutta in DS Cember 1967. Our Troop participated in two international jambore es in one and the S me year 1967 a uniq le achieve (nent i r any troop in Ceylon. Our Troop Collected a total amount of Rs. 962, the highest in the district during the Annual Job Campaign this year. A general camp was organised in Vavuniya with the help of our old boys there. The Annual Field Day was held in July this year with Dr. S. Naqules waran of the Faculty of Engineering at the Ceylon University, an all minus, as our chief guest, Messrs S. C. Muthucumaran, N. Nalliah and W. S. Subramaniam are in charge of the Troop. Mr. R. S. Sivanesarajah is in charge of the Cubs.

Our Senior Cadets attended theirs also at Diyatalawa accompanied by Lieut. S. Parameswaran. We congratulate Lieut S. Parameswaran on his elevation to the rank of Captain. We are now faced with the urgent problem of finding two Cadet Officers for the two vacancies in our School.
Prefects' Council
The Council successfully maintained tradition by doing their bit by the institution in carrying out their routine duties under the guidance of the Board of Discipline. I wish to thank all our Prefects who have been functioning effectively under the leadership of S. Mahendra, the Senior Prefect. They have earned the esteem of the school community.
The O. B. A. and the P. T. A.
These associations are collaborating in the campaign to Collect funds for the College Temple and the Science Block. These two projects have been hanging fire for some years. The O. B. A. has been fortunate in Mr. R. Nagaratnam a public-spirited gentle. main who has undertaken an arduous collection tour of Malaysia. According to present indications a Prayer Hall for the Temple, the pet project of the late Prin. cipal Cumaraswamy will be a reality before the end of next year. The Joint Committee of the O. B. A. & P. T. A is making an all-out effort to collect funds locs.lly to complete the ground floor of the Science Block The Colombo Branch of the O. B. A has been alerted for this purpose We trust that every old boy, carent and well wisher will respond generously to this worthy

always been it is however not an easy task today to keep the physical needs of youngsters satisfied. In spite of all the adversities of the economic life of the country, we have managed to run this department for another year satisfactorily maintaining standards in Corporate life
In Memorian
We record with deep regret the death of three of our old boys during the year. Mr. C. Cumaraswamy, who had a distinguished career in the public as well as the diplomatic service of the country, served the College as President of the Board of Directors and brought great honour to his Alma Mater.
Mr T. Muthusamy pillai, leader of the Jaffna bar, was Manager of the institution for many years and served the College and the Hindu Community in various ways leaving behind a worthy record. It is some consolation to think that before he departed from our midst we were able to honout him as the Chief Guest at a Prize Day held some years after the take over.
Mr. S W Balasingham, Principal of Jaffna College, was on our staff for a few years. He inaugurated our Historical and Civic Association which is completing its 25th year.
