ம ர ன வ ர் சுதந்தரமென்றும் அமைதியின்மையென்றும் இக் காலத்திலே பேசப்பட்டு வருகிறது. ஆயினும் நமது பழைய மாணவருள் ஒருவர், தமக்கியல் பாயமைந்த தன்னடக்கத்தையும் மீறி நமது மத்தியில் இன்று வீற்றிருக்கும் இத் தருணத்தில் நமது நம்பிக்கை கைகூடமுடியாத ஒன்றென்று எங்ஙனம் அடக்கி வைக்க முடியு ? ஆம், நீங்கள் கருதுவதுபோல நமது பிரதம விருந்தினராக இங்கு வீற்றிருச்கும் இலங்கைப் பல்கலைக் கழ கத்துக் கணிதப் பேராசிரியர் கனகசபாபதியவர்களைத்தான் நான் இங்கே குறிப்பிடுகிறேன்.

இவ்வாண்டுப் பரிசளிப்பு விழாவிலே தாங்கள் பிரசன்னமா யிருப்பது எங்களுக்கெல்லாம் பெருமகிழ்ச்சி தருவதொன்ருகும். அதிலும் தங்கள் மாணவப் பருவத்திலிருந்தே வழி யெ ங் கு ம் விருதுகள் பெற்று, யாழ்ப்பாண இந்துக் கல்லூரியில் லண்டன் மட்றிக்குலேஷன் பரிட்சையில் முதற் பிரிவில் சித்தியடைந்து பின்னர் நமது சர்வகலாசாயிலேலே முதற் பிரிவுச் சிறப்பினைப் பெற்றுக் கேம்பிரிட்சிலே ட்ரைப்போசும் , ருங்ளர் பெருமையு மடைந்து இன்று பேராதனையிலே கணிதத்துறையின் தலைம்ைப் பீடத்தை அலங்கரித்து அதன் திட்பநுட்பமான ஆராய்ச்சிப் பணிகளைப் பொறுமையோடு ஏற்று நிற்கும் தங்களுடைய முன் னேற்றமானது கணித மாணவர்களுக்கு, சிறப்பாக அப்பாடத் திலும் அதனேடு தொடர்புடைய ஒழுக்கக் கட்டுப்பாடுகளிலும் பயிற்சிபெறவிழைந்து இந்துக்கல்லூரியை நாடிவரும் மாணவர் களுக்கு, ஒரு முடிவிலாத் தொடர்புடைய ஆதார சக்தியாய் விளங்குகின்ற காரணத்தினலே நம்முடைய மகிழ்ச்சி சொல்லுந் தரமன்று.

அறிவின் உயர்வைப் புலப்படுத்த ஒருவரும், அறிவுச் சுடர் கொழுவும் தீபங்களைக் கையளித்து வழியெங்கும் விளக்கமாக்க மற்றவருமாக வந்து இந்த நன்னுள் சிறக்க உதவிய உங்களிரு வர்க்கும் எமது மனங்கனிந்த நன்றியைச் சமர்ப்பிக்கின்ருேம்.
எழுத்தறிவின்மை, அறியாமை ஆகிய இருளகற்ற அத் துணைப் பெரும்பணியாற்றிய டாக்டர் C. W. W. கன்னங்கரா அவர்கள் மறைந்த இவ்வாண்டிலே மிகச்சிறந்த அறிவுத் திறமை படைத்தவர்களுக்கே இத்தகைய ஒளி தேவைப்படுகிறது. பத் திரிகைகளிலே ஒரு திடீர்த் தலையங்கத்தை விரும்பி இதனை நாமிங்கே கூறவில்லை. யாழ்ப்பாண இந்துக் கல்லூரியிலே கல்வித் துறையில் நாம் பல வெற்றிகளை யீட்டி வந்தும் கடத்த சில ஆண்டுகளாக ஏமாற்ற மடைந்தே வருகிருேம் என்பதை எடுத் துக் காட்டவே இதனைக் கூறுகிருேம். எங்கள் மாணவர்களுள் திறமை மிக்கவர்கள் பேராதனைக்கோ கொழும்புக்கோ செல்வ தானுல் அங்கே பிரயோக விஞ்ஞானத்தையே - அதாவது பொறியியல் மருத்துவம் ஆதியாந் துறைகளையே விரும்புகிறர் களே யன்றித் தூய விஞ்ஞானத்தை விரும்புகிறர்களில்லை யென் பது உண்மையே. தவறு முழுவதும் அவர்களுடையதென்று கூறி விட முடியாது; பெற்றேர் தூண்டுதல், சமூக அந்தஸ்து, திரு மணக் கவர்ச்சி ஆகிய எல்லாம் கூடிச் "சதி செய்வதனுலேயே அவர்கள் கல்விக் கூடங்களேயும் ஆராய்ச்சிக் கூடங்களையும் ஒதுக்கி விட்டு மாகாண மருத்துவ மனைகளையும், நடுக் காட்டு அணைக்கட்டு முதலாம் கட்டட நிர்மாண வேலைகளையும் நாடு கிருர்கள். இவர்களிலும் பார்க்க இயற்கை விவேகத்தில் குறைந் தவர்களுடைய சேவையிலேகூட இப் பணிகள் முன்னேற்ற

பெரியோர்களே, இப்பொழுது கல்லூரியோடு தொடர்பு
டைய விடயத்திற்கு வருவோம். இன்று மாணவர் தொகை .
1828இலிருந்து 1155 ஆகியுள்ளது. இவ்வாண்டில் ஆழும் வகுப்பை நீக்கியமையே, மாணவர் தொகை குறைந்தமைக்கான முக்கிய மான காரணமாகும். 1970ஆம் ஆண்டு தொடக்கம் எமது கல் லூரி 8ஆம் வகுப்பிலிருந்து 12ஆம் வகுப்பு வரையுள்ள உயர்தர பாடசாலையாக இயங்கும். எவ்வாரு யினும் எமது விஞ்ஞானப் பிரிவில் 675 மாணவரும், விஞ்ஞான உயர்தர வகுப்பில் (A/L) 250 மாணவரும் இருப்பர். பொறியியற் பகுதியில் வரையறுக்க
இயலாத அளவு மாணவர் தொகை, நெருக்கடியை ஏற்படுத்து
வதை நாம் அநுபவ ரீதியாக உணர்ந்து வருகிருேம் விஞ்ஞான வகுப்புக்களுக்குக் கூடிய ஆசிரியர்களைப் பெற்றுத்தரும் உதவியினே நாடி வித்தியாதிபதிக்கு முன்னரே விண்ணப்பம் அனுப்பியுள் ளோம்; அவரின் உதவி கிடைக்கும் என எதிர்பார்த்துக்கொண்டு மிருக்கின்ருேம். குறிப்பிட்ட சில பாடங்களைக் கற்பிப்பதிலே தொகை கூடியதான சிரமமிருப்பினும், ஒரு வகுப்பிற்கு 40 மாண வர் என்று கல்வித் திணைக்களத்தினர் வரையறை செய்திருப் பதை நாம் வரவேற்கின்றுேம், கல்வியென்பது ஏராளமாக மாணவரை உற்பத்தி செய்து குவிக்கும் ஒர் எந்திரப் பொறிச் செயல் அன்று என்பது எமது நம்பிக்கை. பிரச்சினேக்குரிய மாண வன் எவனையும் பயனற்றவன் என்று கற்பித்தலினின்றுந் தள்ளி விடாததும். கற்பவனுக்கும் கற்பிப்பவருக்குமிடையே நெருங்கிய உறவைக்கொண்டதுமான கல்வித் தொடர்பையே நாம் கருத் திற் கொண்டுள்ளோம்,
இனியும் கல்வியை ஆடம்பரச் சின்னமாகக் கொள்ளுதல் இயலாது. இன்று அது வாழ்விற்கான ஒரு சாதனமாகவே கொள்ளப்படுகின்றது. எனவே எம்மால் இயன்ற மிக்குயர்ந்த கல்வியையே நாம் மாணவர்க்கு வழங்கல் வேண்டும். பொதுப் பரீட்சைகளிலே சாதாரண சித்தி பெறுவதாயமையாது, உயர்ந்த தரத்திலே போட்டி ரீதியில் முதன்மைச் சாதனைகளே ஏற்படுத்த வல்லவர்களுக்கே வெற்றியீட்டித் தருவதாய் அமைந்திருக்கும் பரிட்சை பற்றி, நாம் தீவிர கவனம் செலுத்த வேண்டியவர்க ளாய் இருக்கின்ருேம், எனவே மாணவர் தமது குறிப்பிடத்தக்க திறமைகளை வெளிப்படுத்த வகை செய்வதோடு, அவர்கள் மிகச் ஒறந்த முறையில் சித்தியடைவதற்கான வாய்ப்புக்களையும் நாம் வழங்குதல் வேண்டும்.

வெளிநாட்டில் தொழிலுயர்வு பெறுதலைக் கருதிய திரு. கே. பத்மநாயகம் அவர்களின் அகால இளைப்பாறலைக் கேள்விப்படுகை யில், பெருமளவு ஏமாற்றமேற்படாவிட்டாலும், ஒரளவு அதிர்ச்சி ஏற்படுகிறது. எனினும் இது விளங்கிக்கொள்ளக்கூடிய ஒன்றே, தன்னம்பிக்கையும், கருத்தூன்றலும் கொண்ட ஆசிரியராய்ப் பத்தாண்டுகளுக்கு மேலாகக் கடமையாற்றியவரும், கல்லூரியின் உண்மையுள்ள பழைய மாணவராய் விளங்கியவரும், பாடசாலை யின் பல திறப்பட்ட செயற்பாடுகளிலும் அக்கறைகொண்ட வருமான அவர், எளிதில் நிரப்ப முடியாத இரசாயன, தாவர வியலாசிரிய வெற்றிடத்தை ஏற்படுத்திச் செல்கிருர், உற்சாக மும், இதய பூர்வமான சேவையுங் கொண்ட ஆசிரியர் ஒருவரை நாம் இழக்கின் ருேம், அவரின் புது முயற்சியில் நலங் கிட்டுமாறு வாழ்த்துகின்ருேம்,

மைதானப் பணியாளராயும், காவலாளராயும் கடந்த பன் னிரண்டாண்டுகள் கடமையாற்றிய திரு. எஸ். சுப்பிரமணியம் ஒய்வு பெறுவதையும் இங்குக் குறிப்பிட்டு, அவருக்கு மகிழ்வான ஒய்வுக் காலம் ஏற்பட வாழ்த்துகின்ருேம்.
விளையாட்டுக்கள்.
கிறிக்கெற். எமது முதற்பிரிவு, ஏழு ஆட்டங்கள் விளையாடி நான்கு ஆட்டங்களில் வெற்றியும், மூன்றில் தோல்வியும் அடைந் தது, இாண்டாம் பிரிவு, நாலு ஆட்டங்களில் ஒன்றில் வெற்றி யும், மூன்றிலே சம நிலையும் பெற்றது. கல்லூரிகளுக்கிடையிலும், பிரதேச ரீதியிலும் நடந்த போட்டிகளிலே, எமது முதற் பிரி வுத் தலைவன் கே. அமலகுகன் யாழ்ப்பாணத்திற்குப் பிரதிநிதித் துவம் பெற்று நன்குவிளையாடினர். கண்டிக்கெதிராக நடைபெற்ற கிறிக்கெற் ஆட்டத்தில் அவர் ஆகக் கூடுதலான 44 ஒட்டங்க ளைப் பெற்ருர், எமது விளையாட்டு வீரர்களுள், ஏ. விபுலானந்தா, கே. இராஜகுமார், எஸ். சூரியகுமார் ஆகிய மூவரும், பிரதேப் பாடசாலைகளின் கிரிக்கெட் போட்டி இரண்டாம் பிரிவிற்குப் பிரதிநிதிகளாய்த் தெரியப்பட்டனர். பொதுவில் நாம் ஒரு கெளர வமான தரத்தினை இந்தப் பருவத்தில் பெற முடிந்ததற்காகவும், ஆர்வத்தோடும், அக்கரையோடும் எல்லாப்போட்டிகளிலும் விளை யாடியதற்காகவும் மகிழ்ச்சியடைகின்ருேம்,
உதைபந்தாட்டம்:
உதைபந்தாட்டத்தைப் பொறுத்தவரையில் 1968ஆம் ஆண்டு, ஒளிமயமானதாயில்லை. யாழ்ப்பாணக் கல்லூரிகளது விளையாட் டுச் சங்கத்தினரின் (J.S. S. A. ) போட்டிகளில் நாம் பங்கு கொள்ள வில்லை, நாங்கள் விளையாடிய சில சினேகபூர்மான ஆட்டங்க ளில் மூன்றில் வெற்றி பெற்றதைத் தவிர மற்றவற்றில், சம நிலையோ, தோல்வியோ கிடைத்தன.

Professor Kanagasabapathy, Mrs. Kanagasabapathy, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Conscious as ever of the solicitude you have shown for our welfare, we at the Jaffna Hindu College welcome you - parents, old boys and well-wishers - once again to our annual Prize Day.
Your attendance in so impressive an array, at a time when functions such as this are treated merely as the recurring decimals of academic ritual, is of no mean significance to us engaged as we are in a profession that has been lulled with encomia to the exclusion of dues that are economic. It inspires us to greater effort for the years to come. More, it gives us cause to hope that following your example, the students of today may remember their school long enough to become the loyal old boys and generous benefactors of tomorrow.
This hope, wistful though it be in an age of student independence and unrest, refuses to be suppressed at least on this occasion when affection for the old school has urged an old boy of ours to overcome his natural modesty and be present in our midst today, refer, as you may have already anticipated, to our Chief Guest of the evening, Professor P. Kanagasabapathy, the head of the Department of Mathematics of the University of Ceylon, Peradeniya.
So readily available on less imposing occasions, your presence at this annual academic assembly is exhilarating to us all for the reason that your progress - all the way on scholarships - from studentship and a first division London Matric at Jaffna Hindu, via a first class at our University and the tripos and wranglership at Cambridge, to the chair in, and hence the challenge of, Mathematics at Peradeniya

is a series infinite in its potential to students of Mathematics, in particular to those who enter Jaffna Hindu for training in that subject and its allied disciplines.
The relation between the achievements of an alumnus and the aspirations of his successors is a function that is real enough, but what is even more reassuring is the religious dimension that you have given the College - Varsity continuum. You have enshrined Sri Murugan in the hills of academe. For Hinduism, vast in time if not in space, this would be just another act of devotion were it not that, in giving the spiritual a material representation, you have shown that an academician - even one absorbed in the abstractness of pure numbers - need not, on that score, be abysmally absent-minded. This is proof indeed that, true to the College motto, you are living what you have learnt.
Proud we are at school of this practice so parallel to precept, but not so attached to self nor so prejudiced in view as to forget the home, rich in the tradition of Saiva Siddhanta, without whose initial impulse the " Vel' of victory could not have been planted on a peak at Peradeniya.
Nor would that initial impulse have maintained its momentum had not there been at your elbow the ' sakthi so essential, in the Hindu way of life, to success - your equally devout helpmate, Mrs. Kanagasabapathy.
To both of you, therefore, we are sincerely thankful for gracing this occasion, one to indicate the vistas of knowledge and the other to hand out the lamps of learning that could light up the way.
And in the year darkened by the death of Dr. C. W. W. Kannangara, the man who did so much to dispel the darkness of illiteracy and ignorance, such illumination has be come indispensable even for those who are exceptionally intelligent. To say this is not to give the press an 'instant

headline, but to state what, despite our academic success at Jaffna Hindu, has continued to disappoint us in recent years. It is the fact that the best of our students, on going up to Peradeniya or Colombo, take to the applied sciences like engineering and medicine in preference to the pure sciences. The fault is not all theirs; for parental pressure social prestige and matrimonial attractions have all conspired to draw them from the halls of learning an research to the provincial hospital and the backwoods project which could progress equally well with the services of men less gifted than they.
To say to them that the upper rungs of the P. W. D. and the Medical Department are not so elastic as to accommodate all of them would be churlish. Rather do we hope that the example of our Chief Guest will inspire some at least of the brilliant to become academic specialists. Their purses will definitely be smaller, but not their perspectives nor their purpose in life.

We must now, ladies and gentlemen, proceed to matters concerning the school. Our nutmbers stand at 1155 today as against 1323. The decrease is chiefly due to the abolition of standard six this year, and in 1970 we will function as a Secondary school with classes from 8 to 12. We shall however have about 675 boys in the science stream with about 250 in the A / L classes. We experienced an un precedented rush for the engineering section. We ha ve already applied to the Director about staff for additional science classes and are looking forward for his help. We do welcome the departmental restriction of 40 per class though this is itself not a workable roll for certain subjects. We have therefore to control admissions, for we believe that education is not a mass producing mechanism and that a close and intimate relationship between the teacher and the taught is vital to true communication of knowledge, and that no child however difficult is so unworthy as to be unloved or untaught.

No longer is learning a luxury. It is today a means of living and therefore we must provide the best we can for the student to learn, We have to take serious note of the high degree of exam orientation which emphasises not only a pass at public examinations but also the need to reach the competitively high levels of achievement that will give our boys remarkable skills and a chance of making the best of their future.
It is in this context that last year's results at public examinations are instructive 2nd encouraging.

16 students obtained 1st division passes, 30 second division and 28 third division One was awarded a merit certificate and another the subject prize for History.

118 students passed in 6 or more subjects and 54 in 5 subjects and 103 qualified to be in the A / L. Science class and 8 in the Arts here were 125 distinctions of which 75 were in Mathematics (Pure, Applied & Advanced ).
G. C. E. (A L ) Examination 1968
32 students passed in 4 subjects and 25 students in 3 subjects. 42 students qualified for admission to the University of Ceylon and the Ceylon School of Technology. The admissions to the various faculties were as follows:- Engineering 12, Physical Science 11, Arithtecture 1, Medicine 2, Biological Science 3, Arts 8, Ceylon School of Techology 5.
Since the 8th standard is the source o entry into our school from 1970, parents will do well not merely to strive to gain admission but to keep a vigilant eye on their children's progress. We have written to parents to do their bit as this class is the only one that is crucial for their children's continued studies here. The wide disparity between parent expectation and pupil achievement is in many cases

Kasipiliai, Captain S Parameswaran, and M. Sivagnana - ratnam. We thank them for their devoted labours and wish them well in their new Schools.
Members of the staff who joined were:- Messrs. A. Sinnadurai, P. S. Gnana seelan, S. Santhiapillai, V. Nadarajah and S. Kandasamy. We welcome them. The move
ment of staff has been unique this year and yet we are
able to preserve the atmosphere of corpora te life which alone makes teaching at Jaffna Hindu a far more satisfying experience than that money can offer.
It was however a bit of surprise not unmixed with disappointinent to hear of the premature retirement of Mr. K. Pathmanayagam for better prospects abroad. It is however understandable. A competent and conscientious teacher for more than ten years and a loyal alumnus interested in the varied activities of the schoool, he leaves a void in the teaching of Chemistry and Botany in the A / L. classes that is hard to fill. We shall miss his charm and Zeal; we wish him luck in his new venture.
We must also record the retirement of Mr. S. Subramaniam who served the school as groundsman and watcher for about 12 years and wish him a happy retirement.
GaRes
Cricket - Our 1st team played 7 matches, and W Offa 4 and lost 3. The 2nd team played 4 matches, won 1 and drew 3. In the Inter Zonal competition K. Amalakuhan, our 1st team captain, represented Jaffna and ared well. He

made the highest score of 44 in the match against Kandy. Three of our players, A. Vipulananda, K, Rajkumar and S. Sooriyakumar, were selected to represent the Jaffna Schools in the Inter Zonal 2nd eleven. We are happy that we maintained a decent standard in general for the entire season and all matches were played with ke enness and enthusiasm.
Football - 1968 was not a bright year for us. We did not participate in the J. S. S. A. compatitions, We played a few friendly matches and except for three victo ries we either drew or lost the others.
Zonal Athletic Meet - We did not fare well in the Zonal Athletic Meet on the whole; but two of our athletes under 16 did remarkably well - T. Gengatharan in the 100 metres and long jump and R. Shanmugarajah in the 100 and 200 metres. Both qualified for the Public Schools Meet.
Inter House Athletic Sports Meet—Pasu pathy House be = came champions of the meet that was as usual lively and colourful. We were able to honour one of our devoted old boys - a distinguished all-round sportsman in Ceylon - Mr. A Ratnasingam. He and his wife were our Chief Guests.
P. T. Competitions - We came first in the Circuit and third in the District Competition in the under-19 group,

The Y. M. H. A. organized for the All Ceylon Sekkilar Manram for the fourth time a 2-day conference on Saint Sekkilar which was very well attended. The Gandhi centenary celebrations too were quite impressive with a special meeting to release a Souvenir worthy of the occasion. The Historical and Civic Association celebrated its Silver Jubilee with a social and a seminar attended by delegates from sister institutions. The A/L Union used the spacious Cumara samy Hall for their annual dinner with Mr. K. Sivapalan, Vice Principal of the Junior University at Palaly, as their

Chief Guest. The Science Association made valuable contributions to the Science Exhibition in Jaffna in connection with the Siya wasa Celebrations. It has also ventured on a new publication - 635 ( 5t Got Suth ''. The Radio Club gained much publicity for its electronic gadgets which were highly commended by visitors to the Siyawasa Science Exhibition. Plans are a foot to hold a large scal è Science Exhibition at the College next year. The Tamil Peravai, the Geographical Society and the Garden Club went on with their usual round of activities. We participated in the El - cution, Essay and Singing contests conducted by the J. T. T. A. and won several places. Our competitors in the All Ceylon English Day and Tamil Day showed great keenness and received many awards at the circuit and district levels.

Scotting
We must place on record our appreciation of our Group Scout Master Mr. S. Muthucumaran who, with his service of more than 10 years, has left the stamp of his personality on Scouting at School We are grateful to Mr. R. S. Sivanesarajah for his loving care of the cubs till he left. Mr. N. Nalliah assisted by Mr. V. S. Subramaniam has however stood up to the challenge and our Scouts have fared well in their Annual Rally winning the shield for the highest collection in the Chipa-job Campaign in the Jafina District. Their field day was quite an enjoyable one with Mr. S. Muthucumaran, Asst. Dist. Commissioner, as their Chief Guest.
Cadeting
Captain Parameswaran's transfer caused another crisis in cadeting when both the platoons had no officer to look after them. Mr. S. Santhiapillai, our new Cadet Master, finds it exacting to supervise the Senior and Junior Platoons. It was creditable that both of them attended their annual camp at Diyatalawa. An armoury has been set up for rifles which are expected to be issued soon. We need the services of another officer to continue cadeting on sound lines. We shall remember with gratitude the long and meritorious labours of Captain Parameswaran and wish him greater achievements in the future.
Prefects' Council
Senior Prefect T. Ganeshwaran and his colleagues must be commended for their ability to cope with many an extra demand on their time and energy during an year of hectic activity in school and outside. They were ably guided by the Board of Discipline. We congratulate K. Paskaradevan, our new Senior Prefect, and Wish him well.

The numbers have decreased on account of restricted admission to school. It is creditable that we are yet able to maintain standards. The Hostel and the Cumarasamy Hall were quite often requisitioned for the Siyawasa Celebrations; and the Boarding Master and his Assista ut deserve the gratitude of the organisers of the All Ceylon Tamil Day for the extra burdens they bore so efficiently.
The 0, B. A. & the P. T. A.
Both the associations are continuing their active interest in the welfare of the College particularly in regard to financial resources and staffing standards. Much, however, remains to be done in respect of our prime needsthe Temple and the Science Block.
Sches Choir
The Choir, apart from enriching our worship, sings at many a festival or celebration at the invitation of our Societies and outside bodies.
Library
We record with thanks the generous gift of 275 books from the USIS and from the Indian High Commissioner, which are proving very useful to our A/L students. The stock stands at 5005 today.
The College Magazine
The Young Hindu for the past year was a handsome issue. Mr. V. Sivasubramaniam has assumed responsibility as master-in-charge and is ably assisted by the Magazine Committee. We do appeal to our old boys to subsidise the heavy cost of bringing out such an issue during this difficult period.
