The delay in Publishing the report of the University Commission is causing great agitation. We would like the position of the University redefined in terms of current edd cational trends.
There has been on the other hand a distinct sense of achievement in a different sphere. The granting of University status to two principal privenas of the island is one of the most far - reaching achievements of the government in the field of education.
In the International level too there has been a sense of achicvement Man has tried to reach other planets. Sputniks, Luniks, monkeys and dogs were sent to reccounoitre. Not able to control my curiosity, any longer, I asked him who lived there. He said that it was his home. I Was surprised I was longing to load him with questions. He must have noticed my eagerness, for he asked me, whether I would care to listen to his life story. Happy at my unexpected luck, I sat down on a rock.
Taking off his turban, he produced a tin of toffees from underneath it, and offered me some. His peculiar ways aroused my curiosity. Then, he began to tell me his story.
He said that, he was born in a very poor family, in a small village, in Matara. He as a child disliked going to school, and was always very fond of a carefree life. At a very tender age, he had run away from home. For the last twenty years he had to struggle for his existence. At last he managed to beCome a “Cama karaya,” (a, man who takes lunch to school children) and this brought him enough money for his livelihood. I asked him how his parents were now. He said that he neither knew them nor was he interested as to what they were doing. He was not greedy for money. He was really generous. He was very fond of children,

We had thought about it several months, we had planne for several weeks, and at last were all spruced and ready to go our way. We left Jaffna on 10th of June at 1-30 p. m. ho that it would be a long time be we saw the palmyrah palms agai
Our first halt was at Muruka where we prayed to the tutel deity of the jungle. We then I ceeded to Vavuniya, where we ] our tea, and started off to Anu dhapura. We reached Anuradhap at about 7-30 p.m. and had a sh bite at the D. M. O.'s Bungalow. we were hard pressed for time had to go sight seeing the v. night itself. bas bear eloquent testimony to the highly organised society and architectural skill of the ancient Ceylonese. We spent the night at the D. M. O’s Bungalow.
Early next morning we were on the road to Sigiriya. We did not forget to stop at Isumuniya, which is situated below the bund of the Tissaweva. The pair of lovers-a sculpture of supreme beauty - enhanced the attraction of the Rock temple. We reached Sigiriya, at about 8 a. m. Sigiriya is a sight worth seeing. This massive geological phenomenon of over 400' feet came into full view even at a great distance. We were quite scared to climb up the steep, hazardous, zig-zagging steps which led to the top, but yet we risked it. The remains of Kasyapa's palace, the little pond, the famous frescoes reminiscent of the Ajanta, frescoes, and the view from the rock summit, were captivating to the highest degree.
From Sigiriya, we left for Kandy. While we drove through the winding roads we were able to enjoy the beauty of the landscape. We reached Kandy by 1 p.m. but without stopping there we went straight to the beautiful Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, where we had our lunch. The garden had the most beautiful trees and flowers. House were really attractive. Adding to its beauty was the suspension over the Maha Welli Ganga. After dinner that night we drove round Kandy. ' The lake sparkled with the reflected street lights.
Early next morning we visited the Dalada Maligawa - the Temple of the Tooth. What drew one's attention was the unusual carvings, the highly coloured frescoes and the Audience Hall. From there We went to the University. As we were University Entrance Students we were greatly thrilled to see these Wonderful buildings-which, if fate destines would accommodate us in the coming year or two. The university stands on a beautiful site within the sweep of the Mahawali. We were quite disappointed when We found that the buildings had been closed for the vacation. The graduates of the University who were with us on the tour did their best to impress us With the university they studied in and with the wonderful time they had during their student days.
From the historic hill-country capital we went to Nuwara Eliya. The green paddy fields were no more to be seen and instead we saw moors. We had a few glimpses of waterfalls throwing up masses of snowy spray and its silver water sparkling in the sun. We stopped at Ramboda to have our lunch. o

After lunch we went to Mihintale, the last plage we had planned to see. It was here that Mahinda, met Devanampiya, Tissa. We ascended the monolithic steps and everyone Was tired. Here we saw Madlinda's bed, the famous Lion bath and the famous inscriptions on stone slabs We left Mihintale at about 5-30 p.m. and on the Way We stopped at Vavuniya to have our dinner. After dinner we left Vavuniya and reached Jaffna at about 2 a. m.
We really had an enjoyable trip. Our tour was well planned and was indeed a grand success. This experience will forever remain green in our memories,

As soon as the bus reached Keerimalai, we Scrambled out joyously, and made a bee time for the limestone caverns and springs. These were situated along west, and the breakers were dashing on them, eroding them. Fresh water was oozing out of the springs. The area around this place also seemed barren, with only a few palmyrah trees and cacti plants. Near the bathing tanks, the place was fairly well populated but along the coast, except for a few fishermen's Cottages, the place was mostly deserted, unlike Chun, nakam and the other places through which we had travelled. We spent some time splashing and wading ın knee deep waterand took Some SnapS. Some of us began to collect the pretty shells, which were strewn plentifully along the Wet Sandy beach.

But . . . . Gosh the worst disease that anyone can have is a bad cold. It makes one so sick that one cannot make up one's mind to do anything. I will never forget that day, for I suffered enough. And I hope that I will not get a cold again.

Sailing Paper
When it rains cats and dogs there is no play more exciting than sailing paper boats. Last Monday We had very heavy rain, our playground had eighteena inches of water, and the Water level in our compound had risen by three feet, Our class room was flooded and the roof was leaking all over. Our class teacher shifted the class to the hall thinking that it would be dry, but the hall was just as bad as the class room. We wanted to make paper boats, but there was no chance for it since the teacher never left the class. . . The Principal declared the daya holiday. We jumped for joy and went home.
That afternoon I made a number of paper boats of different sizes and shapes. Out of my old mapping book I made large ones, and stronger ones out of their covers. I used exercise book paper to make small boats, and note book paper for the tiny ones, and wae little boats from the daily strips of calendars. My giant boat was made from a newspaper. All my boats were ready to be launched. They reminded me of the Spanish Armada. The drain by my house was full of flowing water. First I launched the tiniest one. It sailed so smoothly without any mishap.

Oh! What a Wonderful time I had.
Perched on top of a tree. I could see
below the golden paddy fields full of ripe corn; cattle growing on the green meadows and little boys and girls playing games Sometimes I used to fly down very close to the children. When they saw me they would try to catch me. But I flew away from them. In this way I had fun with them and teased them. One day a small boy caught me and I thought that Was the end of my life. Excitedly he showed me to his sister. He carefully opened his hand but I flew away as fast as I could before he could catch me again.
Now I am seated on one of the branches of the golden margosa tree at Wembadi. It is from here I am writing this story. In conclusion let me tell you that I love to be a butterfly because we are the prettiest creatures on earth. We have such a happy carefree life, since we visit sweet smelling flowers and drink delicious honey.

Introduction
I am very happy indeed to be here with you this evening - for in addition to having the honour of being your guest speaker, it brings back fond memories of my own school days. And so it is my pleasure to address you.
Coming up on my way to Jaffna I was thinking about what particular subject I should speak about. Should I speak about women in Israel or Israel in general?' But on reflection, I found that in Israel as elsewhere women are such an integral part of the whole life of the country that it is difficult to separate their problems from the rest. And so I decided that it may be best to view Israel through the eyes of young ladies of your age.
What does a girl do while in Secondary School?
As everywhere else in the world she is fully occupied with her studies and of course, trying to pass those ever present examinations. But that it is a part of the day's activity - for she will be a member of the Scouts or some Youth Movement or club where her talents and social energies

the Israeli born. Leadership qualities are developed and a spirit of good comradeship prevails. In that way the Army of Israel has become almost a family institution.
There is one group of young Women who spend their Military Service in a unique way, and those are the young Teachers - who instead of serving two years with a unit go out instead - to the outlying immigrant settlements where they teach the youngsters. Within the last ll years several hundred thousand new immigrants from 74 different countries came to the shores of Israel. And as you can welI imagine, many problems have arisen as a result. The basic ones are integration into the life of the COuntry and teaching the language of the land, Hebrew, being naturally very important. These young teachers then go out to help weld this Tower of Babel into one unit - as does the army. Their teaching is by no means limited to the youngsters only - for many of the parents and grandparents are just as eager to learn Hebrew, for example, as the children. And it is often said in our little country - which by the way is but a third the size of Ceylon, with a population of 2 million thaf Israel is the only country where the children teach their parents the mother tongue.

At the same time our young teacher gains experience, learns herself and above all has the great satisfaction of knowing that she is contributing her share to building up the country. But all this has not made her stuffy - she has her share of fun and good times - going out to theatres, concerts and the cinema - swimming sports and dating young me.
After National Service our young Women are often faced with the Problem: Will it be a career now or a husband? Although there are some arranged marriages in Israel most of our young people chose their own mates whom they will por ob a bol y meet after finding work or choosing a career. In that respect, we women of Israel are very fortunate, for all fields are often to us, without any disCrimination of sex. Women figure greatly in the life of the country - they are doctors, engineers, artists, musicians, fashion designers archeologists, profess or s, judges and are in a wealth of other professions as well. As you may know, the Foreign Minister of Israel is a women - Mrs. Golda Meir. She began her career as a school teacher, was a member of a collective village - about which I should like to tell you later - became the Secretary of the working Women's Council of Israel, and later on was elected as Mem

It is not at all unusual for a young wife to continue workinq until she gets her first baby. For one, it keeps her occupied and gives her interests outside her home and a second and important factor in her contribution to the family income. A newly wed Couple is inevitably faced with a search for a flat - and since many people like to buy their flats in Israel the young couple, with the help of the government and the family strives towards attaining that goal.
In conclusion I should like to say that I hope you can all come one day to visit our little country on the blue, blue Mediterranean. You will find the ancient and the most modern, the mountains and the desert, camels instead of elephants, Holy Places which come alive before your eyes and I promise you, never a dull moment.

An Appreciation
'LTTLE WOR
The "Little Women stage by the Wembadi Girls' High School at the Jaffna Town Hall on the 3rd and 4th of April had been rightly voted a huge success. The audiences that packed the Hall on both these days left it at the end of the performance satisfied that they had seen a play well acted and produced. It is a beautifully dramatised version of the popular novel 'Little Women' by Loiusa M. Alcott. The version has brought Out carefully the meaning and the message of the novel. And Wembadi produced the drama as it should be. 廖
The story, so simple but rich in "humanitarian feeling and tender charm," is laid in 19th century England. The author has put into it a lot of her delightful humour and common sense. The girls, who acted the play, fully and enthusiastically entered into its spirit and showed how easy and natural it WCS for them to portroy the essentiolly women's world of the "Little Women". The success that they achieved was due, in a great

The year began as usual with the election of the Prefects and Captains on a democratic basis. The new board Was entrusted with - the task of maintaining discipline in the school and helping to bling about a better relationship among the Principal, Staff and Students.
As Indrani Kanagasingam our Head Prefect left school Pooshparani Seenivasagam was elected as Head Prefect in her place. We also lost the services of Jayamani Richards and Saraswathy Amirthalingam at the end of the first term and to make good the loss, Sivapakiam Kumarasamy and Thiyanadevi Krishnasamy were appointed Prefects.
The joint Annual Dinner of the H. S. C. Union and the Student Council - an event to which we all look forward was held on the 19th of September. The chief guest

I would be failing in my duty if I do not thank Miss L. Cumarasamy who willingly helped and advised us in all matters regarding the House.

On the whole the Hornbins have shown co-operation and each member has done her best. But it is disheartening to note the number of points we have lost on studies and late-coming Wake up Hörnbians, march forward to strive, to seek, to find and never yield.

As Games Captain of the school I to submit the Games Report for the 1959 with great pleasure and pride.
We had the Lower - School Sports during the First Term. The Hornb scored the highest points.
The Upper School Athletic Sports was held during the Second Term under patronage of Mr. D. S. Thambyah, Secre of the Ceylon Amateur Athletic Associal The Sports Meet went off well with usual pomp and pageantry, the high ligh the meet, being the bearing of the torch the March Past. I am glad - to say tha the Athletes aimed high and the standar performance reached, was excellent. Creedyites won the coveted shield and in of the cups.

The third term was mainly devoted to Net-ball. Though we entered for both Junior and Senior teams we did not manage to get the championship. In the Inter-Club Athletic Meet which was held in Jaffna during the Third term, Leela Narayanan got the third place for discuss throw, Sivarajeswary Vyravanathan got the third and the

The period under review has been a very successful one. Inspite of the various activities we were able to have regular meetings at which the members delivered speeches and took part in interesting discussions such as o The Language Problem o and “Federalism for Ceylon '.
We had a successful and interesting debate with Jaffna College on the subject “ Coeducation in schools is not a failure . We also had a number of speakers who gave talks on interesting subjects. Mr. K. V. Vellan spoke to us on the subject gajdi Su playsib, and Miss R. Samuel one of our Staff Members gave us an interesting and enlightening talk about Israel after a holiday there.
Our activities culminated in the annual dinner held on the 19th of September. We were very glad to have Mrs. Lorch wife of the Israel Charge De Affairs and Mrs. Roberts wife of the Australian Trade Commissioner as our guests.
Though we could not have regular meetings during the third term, the union had great pleasure in having an informal and lively discussion on many current problems, with Mr. Vittachi the Editor of the Ceylon Observer.
We sincerely thank the representatives from the Colleges for the pleasure of their company at our dinner. We also thank the H. S. C. Unions which extended their invitations to us to their annual dinner.

A The year 1959 marked the amalgama of the Tamil and the English senior lite associations, and it is with great plea that I submit the yearly report of the sociation.
Our literary meetings are held reguli every Tuesday. The programme usu consists of Do you know contests, spel competitions, group singing, speeches, bates and elocution contests.
Our congratulations to Form V B having obtained the highest number points in the weekly literary meetings, d ing the year. At one of our meetings M R. Samuel gave an interesting account her tour of the Middle East. We thank for addressing us.

The year 1959 has been a very busy one for the Junior Y. W. C. A., and with the motto seek light and share light in mind we have done our best to make this year a

There are 35 Members in our club, and meetings are held on Thursday evenings in the form of Bible study, sing-song and Games.
In February we participated the annual festival of the women centre in which our Sweet stall was a Success.
The All Ceylon Youth Camp was held at the end of the 1st term and 7 of our members attended it. The All Ceylon Yuvathicamp held in August, was attended by eleven of our members.
Combined meetings with the S. C. M. of Jaffna Central College were held regularly this year. Our Annual Dinner with the S. C. M. gfoup of Central College was held on the 7th of November.
ܓܠ Together with the Senior Y. W. C. A. we hope to hold an annual Xmas treat for the
patients in the Jaffna Civil Hospital on the
9th of December. ".

The year under review has been a successful one, even though we were not able to have many meetings.
During the first term, the Tower Club
conducted an Easter Song Service at St.
Peter's Church, Jaffna. I wish to thank all those who participated in the service and helped to make it a success.
Together with the Junior Y. W. C. A. group we were able to run a sweets stall at the annual sale of the Women’s Centre.
During the third term we observed the Y. W. C. A. Universal Week of Prayer and organised a combined meeting of the Junior Y. W. C. A. and Tower Club at which Dr. Holmes spoke to us on the Love of God '.
We hope to hold our Annual Christmas treat for the patients in the Jaffna Civil Hospital on Dec. 10th, when we will go round the wards singing carols and distributing gifts thus sharing with them the joys of Christmas,

As we were busy with other school : vities we could not take part in the con tition. But we participated both in demonstration of badge work and ir entertainment.
Our Guides were called upon for du various functions and their services
been appreciated.
While welcoming Mrs. S. Champion Miss I. Abraham, we thank Miss L. Cum samy and Miss B. Rajaratnam who lef in January, for encouraging and impro our knowledge of Guiding. Even thc they are not in the movement now, interest in our activities continues as be.
On behalf of the company, I since thank our Principal for her ready final help when need arose, and Miss R. Tho for her advice in all matters concer Guiding.
We take this opportunity to thank Captain, and Lieutenants for their unfai help, which has made this year such a cessful one. With past experience to str then us, let us look forward and be prep for a richer and fuller 1960.

acti- In submitting the report of the Hostel npe- Union I am happy to say that it has been a the fairly successful one though we were not the able to have regular meetings owing to
various others activities. -
By at The union enables the Hostellites to meet have together for some fun and frolic and
we entertain ourselves by playing in-door ཚོ་ and games and acting short plays. We often Lata- have concerts too on a modest scale. The us talents of our girls have been revealed at ving these Hostel Union Meetings. Many an bugh actress, dancer, and speaker have been distheir covered here. The meetings are very interfore esting and all Hostelites look forward for
Saturday nights. 驚 Before I conclude my report I wish to thank our Staff Advisor for her constant aS ning guidance of our activities, and the Members without whose undying enthusiasm the union could not have been a success this year.
