EDITIO)
The combined efforts of students and teachers have brought wide academic fame to Vembadi. But with increasing awareness we acknowledge that fame has come to rest on Vembadi, because we build not achievements - but characters. Our efforts particularly the last few years have been directed towards helping students of today to live a more meaningful life - a life not only of academic but also of spiritual and cultural import. The literary societies, the music circle, H. S. C. Union, Y. W. C. A and the Hindu Society have been hives of incessant activities. Oratorical, Doyou-know and General knowledge contests, debates and singing competitions were held during the course of the year. Our students made their impact not only within school but without - for instance, Vembadi students carried away most of the prizes at the U. N. O. mixed Oratorical contest, the N. P. T. A. Singing, Oratorical and Essay competition in both languages and the P. T. competition. -
These achievements and many others not cited, are all the more commendable when one is made aware the primitive conditions under which we work -

RIZALÈ,
General assemblies are held 2 very Monday morning. Locationsports field. While poetically we are at one with Robert Frost, when he declares 'The woods are lovely, dark and deep' yet, the discomforts shared by speaker and listner leave much to be desired in conducting assemblies in open air surroundings.
The speaker finds her receptive audience only among the first three rows of students. The reaction of the majority of students range from blank indifference to glazed, dazed looks; looks of those who find long - distance -concentration, a strain.
Indeed one has to stare lynx-eyed at the speaker's facial expressions to realise what ideas warrant them. Even then only the 'd's' and 't's' of the more 2mphatic speakers are heard. A falling leaf or a wayward butterfly comes as welcome relief. Of 2Ourse we resort to micro-phonesout they are, if not the same, ess dependable than the public address system used at the racesourse University

The lack of a Hall worthy of our school, is felt with greater

urgency by those involved i cultural activities in school. W do admit the existence of no one- but two School Hallsthe Upper School hall and th Lower School hall. That th halls are mere anachronist survivals may be proved by th fact that each hall may accommo date only 200 students out of total student population ( over 2,200.
Moreover a gargantuan tas has to be undertaken before th halls could be used to hous even a small audience. The tw halls have to be cleared of th four class rooms that permanentl abode there.
Of course rehearsals cannot b held in the halls. A harasse teacher with a trailing cast would be actresses - seeking nook to practice, is a commo sight in School. One has little choose between the availab 'stages' - the canteen with i teeming, thirsty visitors, th library and the verandah of th Principal's bungalow.
Naturally the volume an pitch of the actresses' voices an stage movements cannot practiced adequately on th above mentioned stages.

bed. It is therefore inevitable that acoustically they are as receptive as Juliet's tomb. The actress often gazes in bewilderment when the slightest w his per boomerangs with surprising vigour round the halls.
The dancer who has danced, the producer who has produced, the actor who has acted, and the
prompter who has prompted may add more problems to the list.
Those in immediate authority are no doubt sympathetically aware of the needs of the school in the way of cultural and artistic facilities; but they are powerless to stir because of the indifference of those who sit in higher authority. Apart from the talks given by Education Administrators that the school should help develop a child's personality, very little financial help is given to ensure the provision of facilities to develop cultural and artistic interests in schools.
If artistic and cultural life is to be made available, not only to the coterie of up and coming' intellectuals but to all who are interested or may be interested, we underline the urgent need for a schopl hall with good acoustics and suitable accommodation.
The existence of a hall worthy of our school, would of course depend on the generosity of the higher authorities.

PRINCIPA'
The period under review is two years-1965 and 1966. We owe an apology to all our friends and old girls for not publishing the Torch Bearer in March 1966.
Numbers
The period following the School's l25th Anniversary Celeberations has been one of steady progress. There were no "big" events to upset the calm, unruffled routine of ordinary school work. Our numbers have arisen to over 2OOO. We welcome the suggestion of the Education Department that no school should be over l2OO in number We do hope that with reorganisation as envisaged by the Department, there will be a new 'Vembadi' of 1200 only.
Accommodation
Control of numbers is the only way by which we can exist, because we are managing with the same buildings, and even the same furniture and the same laboratories as in 1960. It seems incredible, that although we have
increased in number by about 800,
we have not been able to get furniture for 800, nor have we
been able to get laboratory
equipment. To give added accommodation and to meet the long felt need for a place where at least once in a way the school can meet together,

Right through the period we }re very inadequately staffed. e subjects which suffered most are Geography and Science, pecially Physics and Matheatics. In the new dispensation achers come and go, but the ortage of teachers is still acute.

It is with deep regret t I wish to place on record untimely deaths of one of teachers - Mrs. J. T. Niles in 19 and in l966 of one of our mil employees S. Kandasamy.
Miss C. Weerakathipillai joir the staff in 1940 immediately af her Senior Cambridge. From very beginning Miss Weerakat pillai proved herself a very gc teacher'. She was very cou geous, conscientious and was a to win the confidence of girls whom she taught. To teaching was a vocation and S did her utmost to fulfil her calli and to serve the school. Thou Miss Weerakathipillai loved tea ing and Vembadi loved a needed her, she felt that is was called to a wider and grea service in the church. To me this call she retired from teachi

herself and all her talents to serve the Youth of the Church.
Mrs. C. Thambiah, our Geography teacher was transferred in June 1965 and for a time we were without a Geography teacher. Fortunately, Miss Ratnasaba pathy* joined us, well qualified in Geography and with t e a C h in g experience, and with the new appointments in August 1966 our staff was strengthened by two well qualified old girls - Mrs. S. Balasubramaniam and Miss M. U. Ramalingam. Mrs. Parameswary Wijayaratnam left us in January 1966. To her we owe a great deal,because it is entirely due to her efforts that the school reached a very high standard of in Carnatic Music, both instrumental and vocal. We are happy that she is teaching Music in Colombo, because we know that her talents and abilities will find wider scope there. We are glad that Mrs. S. Puthmanathan and Mrs. L. Shanmugathosan have come to take charge of the Music. Three of our teachers left us to go abroad to join their husbands Mrs P. S. Champion to Sierrica Leone Mrs. Jesudasan to Nigeria and Mrs. S. Kanapathipillai to England. -
Activities
School activities continue to keep pace with the progress of

the school. The H. S. C. Union which has become more and more ambitious, had their Annual Dinners graced by the Minister for Locol Government and The British Council Representative. We have done well in music, in dancing and in athletics. We were awarded the first place in the UNESCO Competition for folk dancing and the second place in an all Island dance competition held in Colombo in connection with the Paddy Weeding programme. We have continued to win the championship in the Jaffna Inter School Girls' Schools Sports Meets. In the competitions organised by the N. P. T. A. and by Radio Ceylon our girls have done very well. Last year the H. S.C. girls, both Science and Arts went on exursions to Kandy, Gal Oya Walley and the Hill Country. These proved very instructive.
Results
Our girls have done well both in the Ordinary Level and Advanced Level Examinations. The results of the 1964 University Entrance Examination was speci ally noteworthy as two of our candidates who entered for the Medical Entrance Examination for the first time obtained credits in all four subjects both coming up to Scholarship standardSri Rangini Rasa and Wasantha

alla Ponnudurai. We are also couraged to find that girls are ping well in Mathematics. Our 'st Engineering student entered e University last year, while other of our students is at Faraly House doing engineering in ngland. Quite a number of our rls-about twenty five at least have one to England to do nursing. ne wonders what is the scope hd end for these girls who toil ld work. It is the Government's sponsibility and the responsibiy of the community to find bs and work for the educated outh of our land.
The Past Pupils have always ven us their fullest support 1965 we welcomed Miss M. P. ore who was Principal and anager of Wembadi. She resides Bar us and is now doing church ork. We hear from Mrs. Gringy-Miss Scowcroft, who is quite urprised at the way the school as grown. She once told me ter she had returned to England, at she could never have stayed h in a school with over 700.
I do not wish to write too long report, but there is one fact I ould like to stress. The school very fortunate in its staff, and e are a happy band of workers, orking hard to do our best for e girls in our charge. The sucss of a school depends on the p-operation and blending tother of the interests of Parents, 'iends, Staff and Students and is to a measure we have achieved.

After that gruesome experience I was unable to manufacture for myself any food. Day by day my parts are dying. What hurts me most is not the physical pain. I bear -but the ungratefulness of my former friends. Not even a crow settles on me now and even children treat me as casually as they treat the dust of the Earth.
I know nothing could be done for me. Even before I rot phy. sically, I am dying a slow agonizing death within me. The goat, grown worldly wise, through his wonderings, heaved a great sigh and sadly shook his head.

A comet is a very rare thing. Astronomers say there are many comets in space, but we are able to see a comet only once in a way. The tail of the comet we see now seems to be about 10 - 15 yards long, but actually it is said to be about 20 million miles long. This only shows in what a vast space our earth exists
The Ikeya - Seki comet which was seen recently was named so, after two Japanese named Ikeya and Seki who first saw this comet. The previous comet seen was in 1910. This was named Halley's comet after an astronomer named Halley who first saw it in 1682. He predicted that the Halley’s comet would appear once in every 76 years Accordingly, it came into view in 1759 and in 1910. So we can hope to see it again in 1986.
Though comets seem to come suddenly from nowhere and dis. appear again, they actually move in a set plan. Only we do not see all comets. Astronomers, using strong telescopes see more of them and they know how often comets will appear and how they move. They say that there was a comet which appeared in 1744, which was a very rare sight because it had six tails,

There was a door leading § a room. Ravi pushed open the door and it opened with aloud crack. There was an old table and broken chairs. The room was very dark and we could not see each other.
My hands were cold and I was frightened Yet I did not want to miss what ever was in store for us. Suddenly a black object dropped into the room. I froze for a minute and broke out into a yell. The object vanished as mysteriously as it had come. We stood senseless staring at each other. Then there was a loud mewing of a cat at our heels We looked all round us. We saw no cat. The mewing grew louder and louder. We didn't know what happened next. We were at home with faces red with flight. I started running a temperature that night. And the other three had to tell the story to my father.

The year 1965 has been a year f activities and we have seen both succe failure. The year began with the competition held at Jaffna Hindu C grounds in March. Both the under 1 under 19 squads took part. The f succeeded to come out first in the p cial competition aud the latter shared spirit though they had to be satisfied third place. We also had the Pt school sports meet and the Inter Netball competition. The lower sports meet was held under the disting patronage of Mr. & Mrs. N. Nadesan was splendid competition among all houses and Hornby House emerged pions at this meet. Indranee Arasara Gaithiri Sittambalam and Rohini Po singam were Intermediate and Tunior pions. Tn the Inter House Netball m Creedy House won the Senior champic and Hornby House won the Junior pionship. -
The Badminton Association whic inaugurated this year made it possib girls' schools to participate. Vembac Chundikui were the only schools that part in the Tnter School Badminton t ment. I congratulate Chundikuli for 1 won the a championship and also tak opportunity to congratulate Yoga Winslow for her outstanding perform It was remarkable that she mainta

At the beginning of the second term we had the highlight of the year. The Annual Inter House Athletic Sports Meet was held at the Jaffna Central College grounds under the distinguished patronage of Mr. & Mrs. I, P. Thurairatnam. Creedy House emerged champions for the second year in successidin. My congratulations to Manithy Thissanayagam, Shantha Ratnasingam and Padmini Cumarasamy for winning the Senior, sintermediate and Junior championship respectively. - ཡོད།
The netball tournament conducted by the Department had been a new experienee to our students. The all Island netball matches were held in Jaffna at the new stadium. The Holy Family Convent represented Jaffna in the Senior division and Uduvil Girls' High School in the Junior division
The Inter School Athletic Meet held in July brought Vembadi into the limelight again. Though we lost the much coveted Relay Cup to Chundikuli, we emerged champions for the 5th year in succession. My congratulations to our Intermediate Relay Team which set up a new record in the 4 x 100 metres Baton Relay. extend my congratulations to Shantha Ratnasingam who fared well at this meet. She carried away the Inter Championship Cup and the best Performance Cup.
At the Inter-Club Meet Vembadi did not fail to win the relay cup and the championship cup. -
A. The third term is hardly an active one.
The change of weather did not dampen the enthusiasm of our sportive netball players. Though it was not a great success, Vembadi emerged runners up in both the Junior and Senior groups. 鞘。

Our girls started this year with moderate success, obtaining the 1st plate in the P. T. Competition and lower school sports meet. Each girl aimed at her House Motto “I can' and tried her best
Creedy House has also been represented by three girls in the Senior and three girls in the Junior Net-ball teams of the collegeand played their parts very well. The pleasant duty of reviewing this year for Lythe House falls on me. “The greatest ed thing in sports is not to win but to take part' has been a convenient motto.
The Inter-House meet was as usual interesting. We had to be satisfied with the third place. A fact to be regretted is that nd although we worked hard, we did not ay fare well in games But yet it was a great nd pleasure for the Lythians to have carried away the March Past Cup. While congratulating, I must not fail to mention that we produced quite a few outstanding athletes this year.
My heartiest congratulations to Manithy Tissainayagam and Malaimagal Ratnasingdy ham who won the Senior and Junior W championship cups respectively J wish to er congratulate Jeyapooshani on becoming til the Intermediate Champion. Our members are in the school Net ball team and P. T. squads. It is disheartening to note that there have been a number of points lost in studies and late coming. Association for the year 1965
It is with a sense of achievement and appiness that I submit the report of the nior Literary Association for the year 65.
Our association meets every other Wednes
ay. Owing to the lack of accomodation e have our meetings seperately in each ass room. But our activities have been the mie. The meetings comprised of imromptu speeches, recitations, songs and lort plays. Occasionally we have a Spellg Bee Competition or a Quiz or general nowledge. Having the meetings sepately in class rooms has in a way helped ur members to overcome their shyness and take part in the programmes with a lot of onfidence.
During the second term we - had -- Orarical Contests both in English and Tamil r all the G. C. E., and Prep G C.E classes. uring the third term we had Essay Cometition in English and Tamil and a Genall Knowledge Quiz. This year's actities came to a close with a social-which annually held as a farewell to all those ho leave at the end of the year. We had ev. D. K. Wilson as our Chief Guest at e function and he gave away the prizes to e winners of the competitions. The Litery Association has given every opportunity its members to develop their talents in ocution - and histrionics and to take an itiative in organising meetings and nctions.

The fact that the number of Christian students had dwindled drastically over the years, was in our mind as we planned our policies and programme for the school terms.

All Y. W.C. A. members were urged to attend daily prayers held at 8-15 A.M in the Hostel prayer room. The first meeting took the form of a Musical and games evening. This meeting - was followed by devotional meetings, where staff members and students spoke on Christian themes; and literarv and cultural meetings of which students were given ample opportunity to use their varied talents. -
During the second term a similar programme of activities were followed. Role plays-in which students acted and then discussed the pros and cons of their actions proved very nonular. A few of our members attended the S. C. M. conference held during the holidays . . . . -
The highlight of our activities, during the third term was the forum on parent-child relationship; student-teacher relationshin and girl-boy relationship. We are verv grateful to Mrs. G. C. Niles, Mr. R. E. T. Sethukavalar and Rev. D. K. Wilson-who spoke to us on the above subjects and later answered our questions. Our members participated in the Inter-School Carol Service held at the Town Hall. Later in the week Y. W. C. A. members-together with members of the Tower Club. visited the Nuffield school for deaf and blind children and feted them at a Christmas party. We

I have great pleasure in submitting report of this union for the year 19 The boarders met, every Saturday ni at 8 p.m. for recreation and relaxati We, not only entertained ourselves also provided ample opportunities for girls to utilise their talents by produc short plays, dances, vocal recitals We also conducted indoor games Th were two film shows during the course the year.

We are proud to say that Hindu Students of the Scowcroft Uni with the help of Miss Sivasubramani inaugurated a prayer meeting and bajar during the first term of the year. Th prayer meetings were conducted every 1 day evenings with the whole hearted operation of all students. Christian me hers of the union had Sing-Song Sundays at 8 p.m.

We bade farewell to Mrs Sivalingam and Mrs Shanmuganathan when they left the hostel to get married. We wished them a happy and prosperous future.
We had to bid good-bye to our hostel matron Miss Saravanamuttu and Miss Samuel who have gone abroad to qualify in nursing. We wish them both all the best in their new venture We are very glad to welcome Mrs. Rajasundaram, the new hostel matrons and are thankful to Miss Satchithanandan, the hostel nurse for her untiring help, ,
I would like to thank our Staff Advisor Miss Rajaratnam for her constant guidance and help. She has now left us as she is following the diploma in education course at Peredeniya. We wish her the very best
aed we do hope that she will come back
to us.
My sincere thanks are due to our Principal Miss M. Thambiah, our ViccPrincipal Miss Thomas and to the members of the union whose untiring effort - enthusiasm - co-operation and advice helped the progress of our Union. I have great pleasure in presenting the report of the Hostel Union for the year 1956.
The Union commenced its activities this year, in the usual way, the election of the Office-bearers, and at the next meeting, with the introduction of Freshers This Union enables the hostellites to meet to-gether for some fun and frolic. We entertain ourselves by playing indoor games or having concerts occasionally. The girls look forward to these meetings on every Poya day night. We often have 'Do you know contests, which often turn out to be of an entertaining character, and the winner is always given a prize. Miss Dore showed us many films during the course of the year but the most interesting one was shown by U. S. I. S of Jaffna. It was all about Science and it was indeed very helpful to us.
In November we had our annual Hostel dinner and girls from each dormitory gave items and entertained us. The money that we collected was useful in giving prizes to those who came tist and 2nd in the Fancy dress competition and buying gifts for the Christmas tree.
Before concluding this report, it is my duty to thank Mrs. Mylvaganam our present Staff Advisor who has shown keen interest and helped us in all our difficulties. I am certain that under her able guidance the

This Association itself wakes up from its hibernation. once a year only to join the Colombo branch of her Sister School in a joint Social and Dinner with an Annual General Meeting thrown in All the same that day we do have a wonderful re-union which brings back happy memories and reminiscences. Very often we hear envious comments from old pupils of other schools, of how fortunate we are to have this inity and fellowship. For

this function to be a success our mait stay and prop are the Old-Boys of th Jaffna Central Colombo Branch and a few ardent and faithful Old-Girls who worl hard and contribute generously of thei time, energy and money.
It was suggested that we stage a good English Play next vear along with ou Old-Boys. Those with histrionic talent please sends in your names to me. Sug gestions are alwavs welcome.
It has been proposed to have a Hens Party all by ourselves sometime in early February. This year, together with th J. C. C. Old-Boys Association, Colomb Branch, we met for our Annual Functior at Palm Springs’, Lunawa, from 5 p. m. to 10 p.m. on October 30th. Or that occasion a very good representa tion from our Mother Association was there. It was very good of Miss Thambiah and Miss Thomas to have made the effort to be present there. We were happy to have Miss Mary Chinniah, a former teache of our school, and now the head of one of the Jaffna Schools, with us. arrived only the previous day from U. K. after about a decade at home. We welcomed her back to Ceylon with much joy. We do wish her God's guidance and strength in the new tasks that lie ahead of her.
We congratulate Miss Christobel Veerakathippillai in her recent decision to give up teaching and do more religious work. I have known her very well and always admired her for what she has meant to her Family. She has been a dutiful daughter and a benevolent Sister. She has been no less capable as a teacher and friend. Our wishes go with her as she launches out in a new Venture for Christ.
