General
I do not wish to repeat various things which I write every years. In all activities the school has developed and has continued to do well.
1970 will remain a year which will be in our memory for a very long time to come. In October 1970, we opened the new Hall for use, Dr. P. Udagama was invited to come and he opened it. On that occasion I read a short report which II would like to present again to the School Magazine

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you this morning. To You Sir, our special thanks are due for consenting to be present here. We know that you have only a day in Jaffna. With your erudite learning and experiences in the University, working and guiding teachers and Principals, we know that it is very apt that you should be at the helm of affairs educational. We do hope that your ministry Will put the child first and not experiment and theorise at the expense of the child.
This is indeed a happy occasion when we have so distin

guished a guest and such a large gathering of Parents and Friends of the school to witness this memorable event.
Permit me Sir, to digress a little. I have been at Wembadi for the last thirty two years. I have been here for the Centenary Celeberations of Wembadi in 1938 and for the 125th Anniversary Celeberations in 1963, i know that even in 1938 the 'old girls. of Wembadi spoke and dreamt about the building of a Hall, but living conditions had to come first and in 1939 as a Centenary Block, the Scowcroft Home, the Hostel you see in front of this Hall Was built. The living Conditions planned were luxurious, but the Hostel was really designed for 6O. Now the Hostel has grown and we have 210 students in residence, Please don't think that I have stretched it and stretched it like an India rubber ball about to burst No, we bought six lachams of land, it is a pity we didn't have the money nor did we have the vision to buy call the thirty lachams of land which was then available. However We built extensions to this Hostel and we are just able to accoma date a maximum of 200 which can be stretched at a pinch to 21 O.

During the period following 1949 we were able to collect a little money and again this wen towards extending the playground and building a modern Home Science Laboratory and library a geography room and a smal Botany and a small Zoology laboratory.
The School has grown from 500 to 24OO in a period of thirty years Since there was no way of having assemblies together and mostly assemblies of neces. sity had to be standing ones, the sanctity and dignity of School Assemblies seemed a force because of the difficulty of control.
Science had been introduced in 1947 and soon we were allowed to cnter for G C E (A. L.) Science. At first the staff and I had to use all our persuasive powers to keep students from jumping accross to Jaffna Central College or St. John's College. Now it is the other way round - no one wishes to leave us. Now we have 9 classes in the G C E (A. L.) Science section with nearly 360 students. Our University Entrance results have been quite good, for example last year it was as follows:-

Dental MANO Physical Science Biological Science -as Agricultural Science -
We have our own students who have passed out as Civil servants doctor S, engineers, nurses and we have students doing computer science aenonautical science and chemical engineering in England. What a wide difference between Science education in 1948 and Science education in 1968.
Because of this influx into the G C E (A. L.) Science classes our science staff which started with just two, has grown and the laboratories which were built fori about 10 each had to acconadate twenty or more in each group. As such the science staff and I began to dream of spacious laboratories and class rooms.
These dreams came into fruition last year when the Ground Floor of this present buildling was opened by Mr. G. G. Ponnampalam and the Director of Education Northern Region opened the Exhibition of Science which we organised in Connection with that opening.
Now the upstairs is more or less finished and we are really happy and privileged to have the Director General of

Education perform the opening ceremony, We are also happy to have associated with him at this function Mr. W M. A. WarnaSuriya. Deputy Director of Education, The director of Education Northern Region Mr. Sankaralingan and our member of Parliament Mr. C. X. Martyn. This building Sir, we hope is going to be a centre, an academic centre for public and departmental examinations, a cultural centre where our girl's can give of their best in music and dance, in drama and literary activities and also a place where they can listen and imbibe the best of other cultures. We hope it will be a centre for pure and uplifting fun and frolic and lastly but not least we hope it will be a centre where many a girl can get a glimpse of God's plan for her in her community and in her society. We are glad sir, that you who have the shaping of the destiny of our children, are opening this block, which we know will mean much to our children.
The whole building is estimated at Rs. 325,000/-. This block has been built entirely from the savings from Facilities Fees and is therefore an effort by the Parents, teachers and students. No government funds as such have gone into this

building and it is really creditabie for all of us to have built his without asking for any donations This Hall and this whole block is a monument which the Wembadi Community has contributed to Education of Girls.
I will be failing in my duty f I do not mention here the various people who have helped us during his period and in this building programme. The Director of EduCition Northern Region Mr. S, Chanikasalam who has helped us with advice and his engineers and inspectors who have given us so much of time and technical advice ind skill. I must mention Mr. Sivasithamparanathan and Mr. Cumarakulasingham the engineers of the Education Department. Mr. Tharmalingam and Mr. Moothuhamby Inspectors of Works and ill others of the Education Department who have given uns'inted ldvice and help.
Nothing would have been chieved without the unfailing help and technical skill of Mr. N. Urvasi
Dance and Dance drama hav become a very importa at part c our cultural life. We as a schoo presented '' Sukanya in 196 and it was an Outstanding succes: I had been urged to take it t Colombo but we did not do sc Ho wever we started working o) another ballet Urvasi ' and am happy that our girls were abl. to delight audiences in Jaffna, an in Colombo with their high perfec tion in dance techniques.
Mrs. Gnana, Kulendran whic was mainly responsible for orga nising Sukanya was responsible for this ballet, Urvasi as well, Mrs Waratha Shanmuganathan compo. sed the lyrics for the ballet Mr E Suppiah our dance maste. with his great knowledge of dance its art and techniques, has made the interpretation of the drama, into dance form. He has spent a lot of energy and time in giving the best of his knowledge and art to the training of students. Urvas neared perfection because Mr. Sup.

piah is never satisfied except with the very best. Both Mr. Suppiah and Mrs. Kulendran have worked together to make Urvasi near perfection.
Performing a ballet of this magnitude involves a tremendous amount of work. Firstly it is the music which adds a finish to the whole, Mrs. Sridevi Pathmanathan our violinist, and Mr A. S. Ramanathan with his mirudhangam have provided this finish. The staff too have worked very hard. Comments have been made that the costumes and stage were excellent Our teachers have put all their artistic talents into this and have succeded in attaining a high standard.
Miss G. T. Vadivelu
About the middle of this year Government's policy of retirement at 55 became known. In December Miss Grace Vadivelu the popular head mistress and principal of our Kanishta school had to retire. Miss. Wadivelu has worked for 35 years and is a product of the Training College under Mis S. Clark. Others have written about Miss. Vadivelu so I would like to add my humble tribute. Miss. Wadi velu was a good teacher, very painstaking and very capable. She was completely interested in the welfare of the students

and the school. She had great organising ablity, a talent for quick composition of lyrics, music and drama and a knack of getting things done by students. She was loyal to the school, to her fellow teachers and colleagues and gave her best to the developement of the school.
I would like to place on record our sincere thanks to her for the amazing patience and ability in putting all her energies and good will into the development of Our Kanishta Section, and the school as a whole, Miss Vadivelu's loyalty to the school and the students and her hand work in laying the initial found" ation has made Wembadi what it is. I would like to take this opportunity to wish her well and may she continue to serve the community as she has done so
far.
Appreciation
A report of this kind is not complete without a word of appreciation and thanks to all those who have worked so hard and given unslinted loyalty and devotion. games and athletics in the production of dramas, in preparing for literary, musical and Scientific competitions, our teachers have given whole hearted loyalty and cooperation. I would like to thank Miss. R. Navaratna Singam our Deputy Principal for her selfless and devoted work. To the Sectional Heads Mrs. Kulendran, Mrs. Arasaratnam, Mrs. Para manathan and Mrs. Pathmanathan, I would like to say how much their loyalty to the school, to their work and to me has helped us in our task. Our three masters though only three among a Swarm of 2400 have given their best to the growth of the cultural, scientific and practical side of the school. Every teacher both in the Kanishter and Senior schools have worked with a will and therefore I am proud to say that we have achieved much.
Our Parents and Friends have always given us full support and Co-operation and we have a very interested P. T. A and O. G. A who have given us full support. Our O. G. A is as old as the hills, the first meeting having been in 1918 and first recorded O. G. A meeting in 1921. Therefore we are planning to celeberate the 50th Anniversary of the Old Girls Association in 1971.

All minor staff of the School too have done their best always working for the good of the school. The students of the G. C. E. (AL) classes, the Prefects and the members of the student Council have always done their duty. The Wembadi girls were so comfortable, in their roles that they were able to draw the audience effortlessly into the story. That mysterious energy, which springs from enthusiastic co-operation in a worthy enterprise, hung in the air. We knew very well that the girls and their teachers loved doing what they were doing, and took great pride in being able to do it so well. There were, of course, some excellent individual performances (Urvasi, P u r u r a v Ca, Aiyus), but what stood out most was that the event was a team effort, one which recached far back - stage to the various individuals and Committees who helped in all the Small and great ways to make the actual performance possible
Urvasi o is a ringing testimony to the vigour and creativity of Vembadi School. All Jaffnd, as well as the whole nation, can be justifiably proud of the staff and students of Vembadi.

ஒரு நாள் விளையாடிக்கொண்டிருக்கும் பொழுது ஒரு நொண்டிக் காகம் என் பச் கத்தில் வந்து இருந்தது. இடது காலிலே ஒரு கயிறு இறுகக் கட்டியிருந்ததால் கால் சூம்பிப் போய் இருந்தது. அதன் காலில் இருந்த கட்டைக் கத்தியால்வெட்டி உணவு கொடுத்துப் பறக்க விட்டேன் அதன் பின் அது வீட்டின் அண்மையில் உள்ள பலாமரத்தின் கிளையில் வந்து உண வுக்காகக் காத்திருக்கும். அதன் சோர்ந்த முகத்திலிருந்து நோயுற்ற கால் அதற்கு அதிக வருத்தத்தைக் கொடுக்கிறது என உணர்ந்தேன்.

After that I studied for some time. Then I had my breakfast at 9 O clock. After that my tution master came home and taught me Mathematics and General Science. At 12 O clock I had my bath and then ate my lunch.

I happened to go from Amparai to Colombo by plane with my grandparents. We got into the plane after the usual formalities and took our seats. The flight was normal and the plane was going above the hilly district. The hostess with her usual smile was coming with a big tray full of hot coffee. As she came holding the tray up, the plane suddenly went down giving us a

I travelled with my parents from

Air-craft. The journey took twelve hours with a stop at Karachi Air Port for forty five minutes. Rome was very cold when compared to Jaffna but nevertheless we went sight seeing to the following places - Vatican city, St. Pauls' Cathedral, St. Peter's Cathedral and the Art gallery. At St Peter's Cathedral we saw the statue of Mary which was carved by artist Michael Angelo at the age of twenty four. The Virgin Mary was seated at the foot of the cross holding the dead body of Christ. We also saw in St. Paul's Cathedral, the original chain which was removed by the angel when St. Paul was in prison. This was kept at the altar in a glass box. In the Vatican city we saw several tombs where the remains of the Popes lay buried. Flowers in vases and oil lamps were kept around the tombs and the lamps were kept burning. After spending a week

Both London and Rome were very clean and every home had a beautiful flower garden.

One morning when we were listen ing to the radio, we heard the new, that there were heavy rains and the eastern and southern parts of Ceylor were threatened by floods. Later or when we read the papers, we were able to get more details. There after, day after day we came to know that several areas had been flooded and many people were rendered homeless.
Many pictures appeared in the news papers showing the heavy damage the floods had caused. We also heard about the plight of thousands of people who had lost everything they had, Even their houses had been washed away.
A good number of animals like cattle, dogs also lost their lives Food was scarce and lots of people were starving. The roads were impassable and several bridges were destroyed. Paddy fields and other plantations were undel Water

When I was three years old I accompanied my parents to Ghana. We left for Rome from Colombo through Madras and Bombay.
Rome is the city where the Pope lives. And every Christian who passes through, likes to visit Rome. So my parents and I also visited "The Vatican and saw the Church and the Palace where the Pope lives.

I went to a school called “The International School'. The principal of the school was a Ghaniyan and the

After working for 5 years in Ghana - my father went to Brimingham in England for one year. During this time I attended Bournville school. Near my school there is a factory which makes Cadburys' chocolates. After nine months We went to Oxford and in about One
and a half months we went to London, the capital of England, and stayed there for two months. Then we came back to Ceylon and I joined Vembadi in fourth standard.
I enjoyed my stay in Ghana and England. I had many adventurous travels. I wish I would get another such opportunity.
