V.T. S. Sivagurunathan A link between Jaffna Hindu & Ananda
V.I. S. Sivagurunathan was a stalwart at Ananda College during its critical, formative years. Mr. Sivagurunathan commenced his services as an assistant teacher in 1916 and rose quickly to spend the bulk of his time as Headmaster until he retired in 1942. However, his association with Ananda continued for a further 30 years or So even though he lived in Jaffna after retirement.
Sivagurunathan was born in Jaffna and attended Jaffna Hindu College. Thereafter, he completed his academic studies in India and enrolled at the Government Teacher Training College in Colombo, having decided what he wanted to do in life.
There were many factors that influenced his decision as he was to write later – "My sojourn in India for higher studies almost coincided with a period of unrest and turmoil following Curzon's partition of Bengal (1905). ...... It was also a time when young people had the rare privilege and opportunity of meeting personages such as Mrs. Annie Besant and Bipin Chandrapal and eminent scholars like Gokhale and Srinivasa Sastri who had sacrificed all their material prospects in order to serve the cause of Education under the auspices of the Servants of India Society."
He further says, “..... It was also the time when without any regard for caste, race and religion, Ceylon was reaping the fruits of having elected Sir (then Mr.) Ponnambalam Ramanathan to represent the 'Educated Ceylonese' in the Legislative Council (1911)."
In 1915, during his last term at the Teacher Training College, W.A. de Silva, General Manager of BTS (Buddhist Theosophical Society) Schools, had sent him a written offer to join the Ananda College staff. Sivagurunathan recalls - "In the course of my reply I had written that a Sinhalese Buddhist was available who was willing to join Ananda. Mr. Kunz (then Principal of Ananda) came again with another letter! This teacher's question could be considered later. He wanted a definite reply from me!"
Sivagurunathan accepted.

Page 7
Then the so-called Sinhala/Muslim riots broke out soon after Vesak in 1915, and Sivagurunathan along with L.H. Mettananda (a future Principal of Ananda) were pressed into service as volunteers in the Ceylon Light Infantry to keep the peace during the ensuing period of Martial Law and was stationed at Kayman's Gate, Pettah, Colombo where he “saw horrible sights which defy description".
When he started at Ananda in January 1916, he found himself at home. "If first impressions count as anything, the layout of the garden and the orderliness evidenced everywhere certainly impressed me immensely and no less important was the fact that no canes were to be seen anywhere! I was put in charge of the Lower ||LA Form, reputed to be one of the best classes in the school in 1916. There were eight long desks of uniform height and eight long hard benches on each of which four boys could be accommodated very uncomfortably, some of them being hardly seen above the desk! The pupils were of varying ages."
When Principal Kunz left the country a year and a term later the College was left in a kind of limbo of several months until P.de S. Kularatne took over in January 1918. Sivagurunathan notes that the premier Buddhist school during this very critical period, "was in the charge of a Roman Catholic Acting Principal (C.V. Ranawake) assisted by a Hindu Acting Head Master."
The Kularatne-Sivagurunathan association lasted a further 24 years and the latter's responsibilities and contributions to Ananda grew dramatically. One of Sivagurunathan's star pupils, later Principal S.A. Wijayatilake, described him as "a living embodiment of the highest traditions of Ananda College" and summarised his career at Ananda in these words - “.... you laboured incessantly first as a Form Master and later as Headmaster , guiding the footsteps and shaping the destinies of countless hundreds of Ananda boys and serving silently as chief of the back-room boys responsible for building up the Greater Ananda. No amount of work was too much for you; you carried a full load of classroom teaching, you drafted the time-tables and supervised the work of the teachers, you superintended the production of the college magazine, you were honorary archivist and chronicler, you introduced and maintained your own system of cumulative records of pupils more than forty years before the Education Department began to think of them, you devoted a goodly portion of your scanty and hard earned leisure to the coaching of your weaker pupils not only without material reward but without even thought of such reward, and yet you found time to write a very useful series of pioneer books for the teaching of English to beginners."

The set of English language and composition books he wrote were titled “Raja's picture lessons' and were used in government and other Buddhist schools.
Sivagurunathan had a reputation for empathy and understanding but also as a stickler for standards and discipline. He was known for his candour and speaking his mind. He recalled – “.... as he (Principal Kularatne) remarked at my farewell lunch I suppose I had always been notoriously blunt and sometimes very provocative, but that my motive was never suspect". Although he was not a great cricket fan and was "always conspicuous by his absence at cricket matches", he never failed to encourage the boys to excel on the field.
He was a key participant in promoting the tradition at Ananda of teaching Tamil to Sinhala-speaking students and vice versa, a practice started during the time of Principal Kularatne and continued by Mettananda. He made pointed reference to this even after he retired; for instance that, in 1946, Mettananda had stated - "At present there are parallel classes adopting the Sinhalese and Tamil media in the Primary Stage" and four years later, “The best way to forge the bonds to knit them (the two groups) together is to get every Sinhalese pupil to learn Tamil, and every Tamil pupil to learn Sinhalese."
After retirement, Mr. Sivagurunathan moved back to his home town and managed the Hindu Girls' School, Point Pedro. He was also active in social service but continued to stay connected to Ananda and contributed to the College magazine. In 1946 (the 60th anniversary of Ananda), on the eve of Independence, he exhorted all concerned to "make her a Greater Ananda - the hub of all national education activities, the hub of the commonwealth of the Ceylonese people, of Lanka that is to be
He returned to this theme again in April 1958, when he was invited to be the Chief Guest at the Ananda College prize-giving by Principal Wijayatilake. This is the only time ever that a teacher, who had not also been Principal, had been so honoured and Sivagurunathan was openly appreciative. During his speech he said - "And finally may I remind you all, that you are one and all the proud inheritors of a sacred trust, and it is for you and me, a past servant of hers, to see that Ananda does not become a lifeless State school, is not satisfied with being merely a Sinhalese Buddhist School, but grows into a greater and greater Ananda".
Sivagurunathan openly advocated a liberal, national outlook and found the Ananda College of his day to embody this vision. He is remembered, in the words of Wijayatilake “for ever shedding on all around him that indefinable but irresistible influence which a compassionate and understanding heart, a well-stocked and well-balanced mind, and a well-lived life cannot but irradiate"

Message from the Principal of Ananda College
15 April, 2013
The cricket encounter between Jaffna Hindu College and Ananda College for the VTS Sivagurunathan Trophy inaugurated in September 2012 will be played this year at the playground of JHC in Jaffna.
This message to the cricket souvenir has special significance to me for several reasons. It was at the inaugural match that I spoke in Tamil for the first time at an event at Ananda. I was delighted when the organizers asked me to do so this year too.
The contest between two schools established 127 years ago for similar objectives, that have pursued similar goals and have had a similar journey is more than a cricket match. It was initiated to bring together students of the two schools, to get them to appreciate and respect each others culture, to celebrate diversity and at the same time unite them through direct contact. This was achieved to a great measure during the five days the 15 strong cricket squad from JHC spent at Ananda last year, during the excursion the two cricket teams had to Leisure World, Kosgama, during the celebratory dinner that was held for the two teams and alumni of the two schools and on the cricket field for two days.
This is a contest that goes far beyond cricket. It has the potential of forging amity between the youth of the North and South of Sri Lanka and recreating the sense of one people and galvanizing the bonds of friendship between the students and alumni of JHC and AC.
For these reasons I look forward to being in Jaffna for three days and reciprocating the honour the Principal Mr. V Ganesaraja, cricket team and staff of JHC bestowed on us by visiting Ananda College in September 2012.
I wish both teams good luck and the Old Boys of Ananda and JHC who will be at the match in hundreds, some with their families, an enjoyable time in Jaffna.

Speech made by the Chief Guest, Honourable Justice K.Sri Pavan at the Dinner held last year to celebrate the Inaugural Cricket Encounter:
I am delighted to speak a few words on the occasion to celebrate the inaugural cricket encounter between Jaffna Hindu College and Ananda College, Colombo. This event is one of the most important milestones in the annual agenda for both colleges. Both institutions are more than hundred and twenty years old where a holy task is being put into action – the shaping and moulding of the fortunes of many generations of the country. The children here learn the skills and the special attitudes which can take each of them to the goal of happiness, which in turn, lead the families and societies, to which they belong to peace and prosperity. More than all, the character of children are made strong and pure. They are given all the confidence and courage they need to become good, honest and self reliant children. It is not enough, if the children learn something by which they can make a living; the manner of living is more important than the standard of living. The children
must also have reverence towards their religion, their culture, their educational attainments and their country. These great teachings of the ancient texts are the heritage of the human community; they must be handed down to the growing generation in homes as well as in schools. The seed of devotion and duty has to be implanted early so that the harvest of peace, contentment and co-operation may be gleaned. However, modern civilization is based on competition in which the interests of the individual precede the interests of the society. Therefore, fear haunts people wherever they turn – fear of poverty, fear of loss, fear of death and destruction of property etc. The fear and anxiety that infect humanity today are the results of the degradation of values, the ignorance of what is significant and what is not, the want of faith in what elders have handed down as wisdom of ages. It is a pity to note that the younger generation nowadays prefers what is pleasing to them, than what is beneficial. Considering the system of education about fifty years ago and the system prevalent now after many experiments and modifications, one has to say that, a great
many valuable characteristics of the old system had been lost: Numbers have increased; but, quality has suffered. More information is forced in; less strength to meet the fortunes of life is imparted. Skills are added but virtues are subtracted.

Page 13
One of our former Chief Justices and an old boy of Jaffna Hindu College, the late Justice Sharvananda speaking about education, through a judgment, made the following observations almost thirty years back: “Education is one the most important functions of the State today. The large expenditure of money incurred by the State for education signifies its recognition of the importance of education to a democratic society. In these days, it is doubtful that any child may reasonably be expected to succeed in life if he is denied the opportunity of education. Such as opportunity, where the State undertakes to provide it, is a right which must be made available to all on equal terms. The Constitution enjoins the organs of Government to secure and advance and not deny this fundamental right of equality of treatment". This observation of the late Chief Justice applies with equal force even today, irrespective of race, religion, language, caste, sex, political opinion, place of birth or any one of such grounds.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I am made to understand that one of the old boys of Jaffna Hindu College functioned as a popular Teacher of Ananda College years back. I am referring to
Mr. VTS Sivagurunathan who joined Ananda College in January 1916 as an Assistant Teacher and served for 26 years with devotion and dedication. After retire
ment he was invited to be the Chief Guest at a Prize Giving of Ananda College, by the then Principal, Mr. SA Wijayatilake in 1958. I had the privilege of perusing the speech he made at the Prize Giving held on 2nd April, 1958. In his speech, he remarked that Ananda College was the best organized school in the island under the guidance of an American Principal, Mr. Kunz. According to him, at that time, the school was in charge of a Roman Catholic Acting Principal assisted by a Hindu
Acting Head Master.
Teachers of his calibre brought honour and good name to the school to which they belonged. He took the hands of the students and led them gently into the wonderland of knowledge. That was an era, when the voice of the Teacher was considered to be the supreme. Even parents did not interfere with the freedom of the Teacher to train and punish their sons. But now, the parents declare war against the unfortunate teacher who cannot inflict even the slightest punishment on the student. This may be one the reasons why the standard of teaching and learning has fallen so low, today. I am proud to note that this cricket encounter is organized as an annual event between the two schools to honour Mr. VTS Sivagurunathan acknowledging the contributions he made to Ananda College.

For the students who are gathered here, I would like to mention that this is a day which you will treasure in your memory during your lifetime. Meeting with fellow members is a piece of rare good fortune. This is the stage where you should learn the values of discipline, determination, flexibility, gentleness, patience, self control, desire to serve others and above all, learning the language of your brothers. While you should respect your own mother tongue and learn to use it well, you should not develop hatred against the language of others. Make yourselves fit for this, by making the best use of this opportunity. The one who knows how to adjust in life is the one who knows how to survive. The more you give benefit to others, the more you do good to yourself and to the society. When people of different races with the same nationalities come together to work and live harmoniously as one family in a nation, racial harmony enriches a society. The harmony that exists within the minds of individuals will be reflected in a harmonious society. As we mature as a nation, our shared values may create common social and cultural spaces that may allow us to interact freely in our daily lives. The rich diversity of cultures will promote inter racial understanding among our students and is an important part of our national education.
Ladies and Gentlemen, On behalf of the Old Boys' Association of Jaffna Hindu College, I express my deep sense of gratitude to each and every member of the Old Boys' Association of Ananda College for the initiative taken to organize this cricket encounter between the two schools. This is only a beginning. Efforts in these directions will no doubt, if persisted in, yield good results. It is an investment for the future of the highest
magnitude. Begin this day, this task of rousing in the students the keenness to become masters of their senses and the tasters of lasting joy and brotherhood, so that they become worthy sons of our Motherland. Thank you.

Buddhist - Hindu Amity
On Monday the 01st November 1886, “Buddhist English School - Pettah” was founded at No. 61, Maliban Street, Pettah, by Ven. Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thero, Ven. Migettuwatte Gunananda Thero, Col. Henry Steele Olcott, Mrs. Helena Blavatsky and Mr. C.W. Leadbeater. The same year in Jaffna, the "Native Town
High School" was established at Main Street by Nevins W. Sithambarapillai.
The former school was re-located at Paranawadiya, Maradana and re-named Ananda College on 17th August 1895. The latter school was relocated at Vannarponnai on the initiative of Srila Siri Arumuga Navalar and Mr. S. Nagalingam in 1890, and re-named “Jaffna Hindu College".
126 years later, on 7 September, 2012 the two schools inaugurated a cricket encounter to recognize their common goals, aspirations and ethos. It started as an initiative of the Ananda 125 year celebrations to strengthen the bonds of friendship of the youth in the north and south of the country who were torn apart during the 26 year conflict that ended in 2009. The first match was played in Colombo and was hosted by Ananda College as an event of its 125 year celebrations. The second match will be played in Jaffna on 26 and 27 April, 2013.
Ananda College was established to provide education in English medium to Buddhist Students and Jaffna Hindu College was established for the purpose of providing education to Tamil Students in English medium in a Hindu environment.
The founders of both schools felt that a modern education in English was the most effective and fastest route to re-energizing the Hindu and Buddhist people who had been deprived of their rights and to restore their self confidence and pride after almost 400 years of foreign occupation that marginalized the people of Ceylon. The foreign rulers naturally wanted the people of this country to adopt their culture and religion and this they achieved by rapidly expanding missionary schools which in most instances converted the children to Christianity or made the Hindus and Buddhists to feel inferior. JHC and AC had a common goal to arrest the conversions and make the Buddhists and Hindus proud of their culture and heritage. This they achieved more successfully than what the founding fathers envisioned.

Mr. D.S. Dayaratne in an article published in the Sunday Observer on 27th July 1997 states that after establishing the two schools Ananda College and Jaffna Hindu College, the Hindu and Buddhist leaders took a step further to strengthen the Buddhist Hindu amity. A Buddhist-Hindu joint effort was made in 1889 to establish a High School for Buddhist and Hindu children to provide high quality education in English medium while preserving their cultural and ethnic values without being Christianized.
A meeting had been held on 07th December 1889, under the Chairmanship of Mr. T.B. Panabokke at Kusuma Hall, in Suriyakotuwa in Pettah in Colombo. Several well known Buddhist and Hindu activists including Ven. Hikkaduwe Sumangala Thero, Ven. Gunaratne Thero of Rankoth Vihara, Panadura, Ven. Devamitta Thero of Heyanthuduwa, Ven. Welitara Gnanawimala Thero, Mr. T.B. Panabokke, Mr. P. Ramanathan, Pandit Batuwantuduwa, Mr. Thiruvalingam, Deputy Fiscal of Colombo and Mr. Seeman Fernando attended the meeting. Mr. P. Arunachalam who was away in India could not take part. The resolution to set up a high school commonly for Buddhist and Hindu students as proposed by Ven. Hikkaduwe Sumangala Thero and seconded by Mr. Thiruvalingam was adopted unanimously. The initial cost of establishing the school, of Rs. 50,000, was agreed to be borne by the Buddhists and Hindus in equal shares of Rs. 25,000 each.
It is unfortunate that for some reason or the other, the establishment of the Joint
High School for Buddhists and Hindus did not materialize. Had such proposal been implemented, the 30 year conflict that marred our country may have been averted. Had it been established, the history of this country would have been written in an entirely a different manner, setting an example to the multi ethnic world. This is a worthwhile proposal to reconsider even today as the links of JHC and AC, so far not more than one year, have shown.
Ananda benefitted immensely from the services of countless Tamil teachers and benefactors in its first 75 years. Then the school was vested in the state and Swabasha was introduced.
Mr. V.I.S. Sivagurunathan, a product of Jaffna Hindu College who was a teacher, a Form Master and later as Head Master served Ananda for 25 years in its formative years from 1916 to 1941. He believed that any nation to prosper the members should not only be educated but also be disciplined, and in this process the teacher has an important role to play, which he exercised.

Page 15
I wish both captains and their teams success in the game of cricket and look forward to being there in Jaffna for three days, with over 200 Anandians and their families. The elaborate arrangements being made by the JHC alumni led by Mr. S Raghavan and Mr. M. N. Asokan, assure the alumni of the two schools two days of fun and frolic and a keenly contested cricket match.

Finally I would like to thank the Principals of both Schools, Coaches, Masters in charge, president of ACOBA, project coordinator and other well-wishers. My best wishes go to both teams. Extracts from the Address and the Vote of Thanks made by the Immediate Past President and Current Patron of Jaffna Hindu College OBA (Colombo) Mr.S. Raghavan at the Dinner to Celebrate the Inaugural Cricket Encounter Last Year:
Distinguished Dignitaries at the head table, Respected Guests and students in the audience,
Thank you for the opportunity given to me to say a few words and then propose the vote of thanks on behalf of Jaffna Hindu. Therefore, please bear with me if | take a few minutes more than the usual vote of thanks. Ladies and Gentlemen, we embarked on this new venture about two years back when Ananda College OBA President Mr. Thilak Karunaratne approached me while I was the President of the Colombo OBA of Jaffna Hindu and indicated their desire to have an Annual Cricket Encounter started between Ananda College and Jaffna Hindu College explaining the reasons behind such decision. It is unfortunate that it had taken so long to get off the grounds due to many postponements for some valid reasons beyond our control and we are happy that, today it had come into reality creating history in the books of Ananda and Jaffna Hindu. The happiness is even more and great when we realize that the driving factor behind this move is Late Mr. V.T.S.Sivagurunathan, a distinguished product of Jaffna Hindu who later had an illustrious teaching career at Ananda spanning for over 20 years, finally serving as the Head Master before retirement. The trophy dedicated in his name is a fitting tribute to this great personality who had brought glory to both schools.
We at Jaffna Hindu are proud to have produced an educationist of this caliber among many other distinguished leaders produced in various fields.
By the way, to break the monotony and to say something in lighter vein, I wish to share with you, an interesting incident related by one of our respected teachers in a meeting in the past , that come to my mind, which we always talk about and remember whenever we old boys meet. He had gone as a member of the jury to a case heard in the Assize Court then in Jaffna. It was a murder case. First the respondent arrived and he was an old boy of Jaffna Hindu. Then walked in, the lawyers appearing on both sides who were again our old boys. The presiding Judge came on the bench and our teacher was on top of the world when he found that the judge was also a product of Jaffna Hindu and had recognized his devoted teacher in the jury. Finally, the accused was brought in handcuffed and then came the rude shock to this teacher, the accused was also from Jaffna Hindu from a recent batch whom he had taught. He made the audience burst into laughter.

The huge challenge faced by the country today at the end of the staggering war lasting for 30 long years is to bring national amity among people belonging to different races, religions and communities. Ladies and Gentlemen, We cannot afford to leave this gigantic task purely in the hand of our politicians and as responsible citizen coming from the two prestigious educational institutions in the country, it is our bounden duty to rise to the occasion and pioneer this effort to bring amity, setting an example for others to emulate and especially for the younger generations to follow. As stated by the previous speakers, if we look at the era before sixties, your College had Tamil teachers of the caliber of late Professor C.Suntharalingam, Late Mr.V. T.S.Sivagurunathan, late Mr.K.Arulambalam and late Mr.E.M.Selvaratnam among many others. Believe it, our college had a Buddhist monk teaching Sinhala to our Tamil students and we had Sinhalese students like Mr. Nihal Welathgamuwa, Mr.S.Dissanayake whom I can remember studying AML with us in our school. Late Justice V.Sivasubramaniam and Mr. Shiva Pasupati, former Attorney General are the distinguished products of both Ananda and Jaffna Hindu.l am mentioning all these for us to appreciate how appropriate it is for both our colleges which were brought up in this great tradition and philosophy to pioneer this effort to bring national amity again. At this moment, the inauguration of this annual cricket encounter between our two schools, I consider is a right move and a positive step in this direction towards achieving this goal. On behalf of all the stake holders of Jaffna Hindu, I salute and congratulate the Colombo OBA of Ananda College ably led by its president Mr. Thilak Karunaratne and his efficient team, for taking up the challenge, initiating such a worthwhile project and making it happen. I am fully aware of the meticulous planning and hard work that has gone in, with no stones unturned to make this event a great success, since I too attended all their meetings by invitation and was very much involved with them. Well Done, Colombo OBA of Ananda College and thank you very much. I would now request our President OBA Colombo of Jaffna Hindu College Mr. T.Satchithanandan to hand over our small token of appreciation to the President Colombo OBA of Ananda College Mr.Thilak Karunaratne in recognition of their untiring efforts. You have taught us how to plan a big event like this while at the same time, throwing us into a fear psychosis when we think of planning such an event next year in Jaffna. But I assure you, ladies and Gentlemen that we will take up the challenge, do and prove it to you next year with the cooperation and support of our dedicated Principal, teachers, Old Boys and students of Jaffna Hindu.

Page 18
The Respected Principal of Ananda College, Mr.L.M.D.Dharmasena, his deputies, teachers, members of the SDS, Sports Head, Cricket Coach and students of Ananda, You have provided a great opportunity and a forum for our college staff and students to mix and learn to respect each other, while also providing valuable exposure for the members of our cricket team to play in a totally different environ
ment, which itself is a challenge and different experience to them. You have made them very comfortable providing all facilities for them, in their stay in Colombo, allowing them to practice and get used to your grounds. We thank you wholeheartedly and look forward to welcome all of you to Jaffna next year to play the match in our grounds at Jaffna Hindu. May I now request our Jaffna Hindu Principal Mr.V.Ganesharajah to hand over the small token of appreciation to the Principal of Ananda College, Mr.L.M.D.Dharmasena In recognition of all what they have done to us at Jaffna Hindu.
To our Senior Cabinet Minister for Scientific Affairs, Honorable Professor Tissa Vitharana, a distinguished Old Boy of Ananda College whom we were fortunate to have to inaugurate this encounter in the morning, although he is not here with us now, we thank him for honoring us by participating in this historic event. Our chief guest this evening, Honorable Justice K.Sripavan and his lady Jayanthi, you readily agreed and accepted our invitation to be the Chief Guest this evening despite your busy schedule. You have always demonstrated in the past and proved to us on this occasion too that the events of our Alma Mater come first in your priority. We are truly honored and thank you.
The distinguished national cricketers of the present and the past and other respected special invitees, we thank you profusely on behalf of the organizing committee for sparing your valuable time and for being with us. Your presence is certainly a source of encouragement to all of us and especially for the players from both the schools. Thank you. The Principal of Jaffna Hindu Mr. Ganesharajah and his deputies, Teachers, master in charge of sports and the Cricket Coaches, if not for your unstinted cooperation and hard work, this event wouldn't have become a reality .To the players, I know that you have taken a great challenge to play this match. Three of the players sat for the AL Exam this August. I am confident that you will carry happy memories at the end of the trip and this experience you gained will definitely help all of you in achieving your future ambitions Thank you very much.

To our energetic President Mr. T.Satchthanandan and my colleagues in Jaffna Hindu College, Colombo OBA, your support and assistance readily taking over various responsibilities and thereby making my task easier as the coordinator, is very much appreciated. I look forward to the same momentum or even more next year when we organize the match in Jaffna. On behalf of the organizers, we express our sincere gratitude to all the benefactors who provided assistance in many different ways, your support is greatly valued by us. Finally to the hotel authorities, a big thanks for the fantastic arrangements and delicious food to follow. To all of you Ladies and Gentlemen, once again thank you and wish all of you a pleasant and enjoyable evening.
