Collecting Postage Stamps

Almost all men are occupied in doing some work or other. We devote much of our time in doing our duty. Even after working for a good amount of time we have some leisure. What are we doing with our leisure time? If we have a hobby, then we would find it easy to spend our leisure hours. The choice of a hobby should be made wisely. Stamp collecting, as a hobby, is sure to prove useful.
In the post-office there are different kinds of stamps. If we collect a hundred stamps of each kind, then we would, at the end, have a great number of stamps. After the collection of many stamps, we should go in for an album, in which we should paste the stamps according to some sort of arrangement. The album having many stamps pasted in it will have a pleasant and a nice appearance.
Stamps teach us many things. In some of the Ceylon stamps we see a woman tapping a rubber tree. This shows that Ceylon is rich in rubber production. Besides this the woman in the picture indicates that Ceylon women are industrious and not idle. In the same manner the different kinds of stamps give us valuable information about the different countries to which they belong. In general the stamps of different countries teach us different valuable lessons.
In some of the stamps we see the heads of some kings. During our leisure time we think of many things. Some peoples
when they have nothing to do, think of doing some evil to others. In most cases when people have no work to do they begin to give room to bad thoughts by which they get spoiled. If their time is occupied in doing something useful then they will not turn bad. In order to prevent the bad thoughts coming in they must be occupied in doing some work or other.
I think that stamp collecting is a good and a useful hobby.

POLLONNARUWA
C. KATHIRASEN, Second Form A. Anuradhapura was made famous by the reign of ninety kings, but Parakrama Bahu, the great, made Pollonnaruwa famous by his wonderful buildings.
Pollonnaruwa is the shortened form of "Polonga Maruwa”, which in Sinhalese means, "Killed a Snake." The story says that there was a snake which had killed three kings and some ministers. It had also done great damage to the country around. When Parakrama Bahu heard this he had the snake killed. Thus Pollonnaruwa gets its name. The snake was buried and an image of the snake was set up over it. It is there to this day.
Pollonnaruwa was also the capital of the great Cholan Empire. It was the Cholans who built the Sivan Temples. There are many other ruins to remind us of the great Cholan Emperors as Raja Raja and many others.
The whole city is illuminated on Full Moon Days and decorated with flags. Pilgrims from outstations arrive in buses and offer lotus flowers. The ruins of importance are the "vatadage" which means "Circular Temple" because there is a statue of the Buddha in the four directions. On the entrance to it are carvings of animals. The others are "Hata dage" "Raja Pokuna" (King's Bath), Lankatilake. Vihare, Rankot Vihare. In the southern part of the city is the "Gal Vihare", where there is a sleeping statue of the Buddha. To the east of this Vihare is the "Sea of Parakrama (Topawewa) which once supplied water to the whole city. To see all these with one's own eyes is one great opportunity which is not worth losing. Let us once more hope that Pollonnaruwa will be a country smiling with paddy fields.
Natural Science Association
The Natural Science Association was formed last term in our College with the idea of interesting the students in the study of the flora and fauna of their surroundings so that when the subject is taught in the class, they will have something more than an academical interest in the subject. The Association was inaugurated by a speech from Mr. Venkatraman of Central

College who gave us a highly interesting talk on "Socialism in the insect world." Since the main purpose of the society is field work, we do not concentrate on lectures, but spent most of our holidays in exploring the country around us. First we had a pleasant trip to Mandaitivu where we collected a few interesting specimens. The high lights of the excursion were of course Chandru's ability to dive head long in two feet deep of water and Ponnambalam’s pessimism regarding collection of animals till they were actually caught. The ability of the party in providing an impromptu entertainment was a revelation to one and all including the performers. The fear exhibited by some of the party in travelling by boat where the sea at its greatest depth was about one and a half feet was amusing. In fact the braver members of the party were exasperated not by the few pessimists but by the inability of the boat to move because it touched the bottom. We also went on trips to Thiruvadinilayam where some were more interested in swiming than in collection. We managed to humour these by starting a modified version of the game of water polo of course using an old coconut in place of the ball. It was surprising to note the inventive ability of certain people who, whenever their goal was in danger immediately stopped the game and came out with a new rule. Of course again Chandru was the master player of the day because he understood the game so well that he let the ball alone but always pounced on the man nearest to the ball and those who know Chandru's weight will realize that the opponent can thank all his stars if he ever comes out safe, after Chandru's assault. We also visited Kankesanthurai and Keerimalai where also we made good collection of animals in addition to having a really enjoyable bath,
All the trips we have had were really pleasant. The (spirit of companionship and accommodation was seen every where of course we must thank our President Mr. Ramakrishnan and
Mr. Nadarajah for their exceptional ability in organising these tours. We also thank all the members of the party who were responsible for the success of these tours and we trust we shall have an equal measure of co-operation when we arrange some more tours that we are contemplating now.

SPORTS 1943
I have been asked by the Editor of the Young Hindu to give a brief account of the Sports activities of our College for 1943. I have great pleasure in submitting my report.
Cricket
The enthusiasm for cricket in Jaffna seems to be on the decline. It is with regret we note that the Inter-Collegiate Cricket Competition matches which used to be a special feature during the 1st term of every year have been missed this year. We, however, were able to play a few friendly matches with some colleges. We played two first team matches and two second team matches. We won one and drew the other of our first team
matches and of the second team matches we drew one and lost the other. I heartily thank the colleges that gave us the fixtures.
Athletics
We had a successful athletic season. The usual enthusiasm and keenness was shown at the Inter-House Sports Meet. The Inter-House Championship was won by Sabapathy House. Our congratulations to Sabapathy House,
12 colleges participated at the Jaffna Inter-Collegiate Athletic Meet this year and we were placed third. The achievements of some of our athletes at this meet is worth mentioning. C. K. Thuraira tnam, our Athletic Captain, in the Senior division won the 1st place in the Pole Vault and 100 yards Hurdles clearing 10 ft. 3 ins. in the former and doing the latter in 168 secs. He also won the second place in the High Jump, clearing 5ft. 53ins. He won the Senior Championship with 13 points. K. Shanmugarajah, also in the Senior Division, won the 2nd place in the 220 yards.
In the Intermediate division, S. Balasundaram won the first places in the 100 yds. (113 secs.) and 220 yards (263 secs) and also a second in the Long Jump clearing a distance of 17ft. 47 ins. The first place in the Long Jump was won by P.Ehamparam also of our college with 18ft. 13 ins. Our Intermediate team won the second place in the 4x 220 yards relay.

We were represented by C. K. Thurairatnam at this ineet. He won the second place in the High Jump clearing 5ft. 83 ins. which is the 3rd best jump by a school boy athlete in the

history of the Ceylon Public Schools Meet. He also won the 3rd place in the Pole Vault and in the 120 yards hurdles. Our congratulations to him. Football
For the third year in succession we are again the Football Champions. We are proud that our 1st and 2nd teams have been finalists for the last three years. We also hold the record score of goals in the 1st and 2nd team final matches. We beat St. Jchn's by 7 goals to 1 in 1941 in the 1st team final and in the second team final beat Kokuvil Hindu by 6 goals to one. Our 2nd team also holds the record of 12 goals to nil made by them against Central College this year.

Friendly Matches: J H C O JC 0 Much of the success of our two football teams was due to the indefatigable Mr. V. Subramaniam who has now left us and joined the Co-operative Society as an Inspector. While wishing him the best of luck in this new sphere of life, I venture to hope that he will continue to help us particularly in Athletics and Football.
- Let me offer my warmest thanks on behalf of my school to the Neeraviady Youth Society for the grand reception they accorded to us in honour of our Championship and to Mr. D. S. Duraira jah for the grand dinner he gave us. My thanks are due to our old boys, well-wishers and friends for the encouragement they have given us during the season. Lastly let me thank the teams for the splendid way in which they cooperated with me.

any matter. R: Conspicuous by his quietness but has a lot of humour in him.

is class public nuisance No. 1 with P on a close second. K: Has a local zoological lab for the gratification of the people
of his village. Is astrologer royal to the class. His idea of strangulation of an animal is to pour water down its throat. He is very regular in attending the class except on days when there is a remote likelihood of clouds forming ir the sky. Always a useful person to have in the class
because of his ability to supply provisions at short notice. Chitrasena, Rukmini and Sita: Always together. Lord Cham
berlain's men of the class. Three Musketers: Boutiques about the college exist by their
patronage. Two of the musketers think they can play foot.

directed more in an aesthetic than in a scholarly way. Messers Shorts: Nobody knows anything about them not even
they themselves.

Jaffna Hindu College Historical and Civic Association
TERMINAL REPORT
BY THE SECRETARY
On the 26th July of this year, a red letter day for our college, the much-talked of Historical and Civic Association was inaugurated by our patron, the Principal. Since then much
water has flowed under the bridge.
We have gone on an historical tour to Anuradhapura and held 9 meetings so far. The inaugural meering, 5 ordinary meetings and 3 committee meetings.
The 1st meeting was a lecture on "Cabinet Government for Ceylon" by Mr. K. Nesiah of the tutorial staff of St. John's College. This was followed by a cinema-talkie show given by the Department of Information. The latest war pictures and pictures of general interest were shown to students and members of the public.
An interesting debate on an historical topic was held. It attained a high standard and was a great encouragement to us and other associations in college.
Swami Vipulananda, Professor of Tamil in the University of Ceylon, addressed a crowded house on "Dravidian Migrations."
The members not being content with theoretical knowledge started on an excursion to Anuradhapura. A party of twenty students, under the command of our energetic President, toured Anuradhapura during our Mid-Term holidays.

We were glad to have Mr. Pieter Keuneman, who talked to us on "Soviet Russia and the War." Before we close for pur Thai Pongal holidays we hope to get our District Judge fo a talk somewhere in December.
Though a few in College are inclined to frown on and eveti detest history, yet the Historical and Civic Association has held no such terrors and in fact has fascinated and educated a good
many of us.
In conclusion, let me thank all the office-bearers and wellwishers who helped me in the discharge of my duties and in making the association what it is.
THE JUNIOR LYCEUM
REPORT FOR THE YEAR 1943 It is with much pleasure and satisfaction we record the work done by the Lyceum from January 1943 to November 1943. The members of the Lyceum were very keen and enthusiastic in attending the meetings held during the year. Twenty-two meetings were held for the year. The members who delivered speeches or spoke in the debates did their level best to make their speeches or debates excellent. Our president, Mr. S. Jayaveerasingham, was keenly interested in the Lyceum and he often gave advice. We should not forget the fact that our Principal too gave sound advice whenever necessary.
/ We are a little proud of the fact that the Lyceum has presented Rs. 279/- to "The Jaffna Hindu Ladies' College'". This money was obtained by staging “Sakuntala" at the end of the second term in August. We are also very much indebted to Mr. C. S. S. Mani Iyer who took pains to bring the drama to a success. The members worked whole-heartedly and brought the drama to a success. This drama was praised by the staff as well as by the public.
A In conclusion we must express our grateful thanks to the Principal, the President and to the members of the staff, especially the lady teachers for having taken an interest in the activities of the Lyceum. We wish that the standard of the Lyceum will be kept up in future by our successors.

DECEMBER, 1943. |EDITORIAL NOTES
WE REGRET. WE ARE LATE IN THE PUBLICATION OF this number of the "Young Hindu". The delay is not due to any fault of ours but to the paper shortage. We hope our readers will understand our difficulty and excuse us for not publishing it earlier.
Further the Paper Control authorities have ordered this number to be restricted to 24 pages as a result of which we have had to set aside much that we would have otherwise wished to include in this issue.
As there has been no issue of the Young Hindu since last April, these notes cover the events of the college within that period. We are particularly fortunate in having to review a
memorable year In studies and sports activities we have continued to make the steady progress as usual. But it is for another reason that this year is memorable. A long felt need in the establishment of a Hindu Ladies' College is an accomplished fact now. The readiness with which the Ladies' College Fund had been supported was rather encouraging and we at Hindu shall at all times remember our obligations to our friends and well-wishers and show ourselves worthy of the trust. But we feel humble when we think of what remains to be done. The cxtension of the college Buildings the erection of a new hall, the repair of the college hostel are some of the major items that should receive the attention from the college authorities.
The H. S. C. and the entrance classes are assuming greater importance. We wish the students all succes,
This term extending to a period of four months or so is Indeed the most active and most interesting part of the year when we students display keen interest in studies and sports, Many of our students are appearing for the forthcoming S.S.C. examination. We are sure that they will maintain the standand their predecessors have set. We wish them all good luck.
We extend our sincere congratulations to our sportsmaster and the 1st eleven football team on winning the much coveted

prize—the championship—in the Inter-Collegiate Football Championship for the 3rd year running.
Though we have not come off successful in the second eleven Final Match yet much credit is due to the players for their very good performances. We congratulate Jaffna College on winning the Junior Championship this year.)
During the second term the Junior Lyceum staged "Sa. kuntala". The performance reached a high standard. Much credit is due to Mr. S. Jayaveerasingham of the staff and Mr. C. S. S. Mani Iyer, the trainer, for the success of the play. The proceedings of the celebrations was set apart for the Jaffna Hindu Ladies' College.

College Notes
Wedding: Mr. V. Subramaniam of our staff married Miss Buvaneshwari Cumaraswamy in July 1943. A warm reception was accorded to them both by the Staff and the Hostellers. We wish the bridal couble all happiness and prosperity.
Farewell: Mr. Jayaseelan, B. Sc. left us last April for agricultural qualification in India. We wish Mr. Jayaseelan all success in his new sphere of activity.
Welcome: The place rendered vacant by the departure of Mr. Jayaselan has been ably filled by Mr. Ramakrishnan, B. A, M. Sc. our present Botany and Zoology master. He has already proved himself an asset. We congratulate him on his appointment and hope he will guide us to the last.
The historical association under the able guidance of Mr. S. V. Balasingam, B. A. (Hons.) is doing good work.

The president complimented the returning office-bearers on their excellent work and welcomed the new office-bearers. So far we have had 25 meetings most of which were debates and speeches. Science And Its Progress

Science has progressed so much that today we live be science, Wherever we go we see some. Wenders, wrought by science. Science helps man to work wonders. The average man stands astonished at the daily marvels of science. It has brought to light many things unknown to our ancestors who were less fortunate than we are. Science has added to our comforts and increased cur amenities. Travelling has become easier. News are sent to and received from different parts of the world by means quite unknown to the previous generation. Nowadays we are able to carry on communication very quickly and cheaply. The telephone, the telegraph and the radiograph have almost
made distance disappear. The photographic camera, the gramophone, the cinema and the wireless go to supply the wants. There are some who become professional in these and make a living. The gramaphone looks a miracle aud the talkie takes away our breath with wonder. By science they have discovered the germs which cause disastrous diseases. They have not stopped with the discovery of germs but have found out the means to distroy and cure diseases caused by them. They have also discovered disinfectants to safeguard people, animals and plants

from the fatal attack of insects and germs. Scientists have adopted easy methods of operaticn by the use of anaesthetics. By the application of chloroform operations are performed without causing pain to the patient. As soon as a person is chloroformed he become senseless and is no better than a corpse. If the patient is strong he comes back to his senses very soon. They have discovered X’rays with the help of which you can see the working of the internal organs in our bodies.
A They have also discovered an element called Radium. The radium treatment is a promising cure for diseases which have baffled doctors for a long time. It is by the study of science that they are able to produce electricity which is serving man in many ways, such as cooking, heating and lighting. Those who misuse these blessings will have to suffer from evil consequences.
OLD BOYS CORNER . Mr. V. Subramaniam of our staff left us in November last to join as Inspector of Co-operative Societies,
Messrs A. Janakan, D. Balasundrarajah, T. Thiagarajah, K. Periathamby, M. Karthigeyan and E. Vethavanam have been appointed as Sub Inspectors Co-operative Societies.
Mr. K. Kanagasa bapa thy has got through the B. Sc. and is now in the staff of Dharmarajah College, Kandy.
Mr. P. Kanagasabapathy has got through the B. Sc. with first class honours in Maths.
- Mr. S. Thiagara jah has joined the staff of Urumpiray Hindu College,
Messrs E. Sabalingam and K. Padımanat han havebeen transferred from Urumpiray Hindu College to Kokuvil Hindu College.

(B) சென்ற இதழில் நாம் புகழேந்தியாரின் புலமையைப் பற்றிப் பேசி னோம், அவர் தான் ஒரு பெரிய புலி என்று நினைத்துவிட்டோம். அது தப்பு. அவருக்குச் சற்றேனும் குறைந்தவரல்ல கம்பர். இவரின் கைவரிசையைக் கம்பராமாயணத் தில் காணலாம். அவருடைய பாட்டில் ஒன்றை எடுத்துக் காட்டி ஒரு பானை சோற்றுக்கு ஓர் அவிள் பதம் என்பதை நிகர்த்து அவ ருடைய மற்றைய பாட்டுக்களும் அப்படியே என்பதை நிரூபிப்போம். - சீதையை மணந்தான் இராமன். மலரும் மணமும் போல வாழ்ந்து வந்தனர். இருந்தாலுங்கூட ஒருநாள் பிரியவேண்டி நேர்ந்தது. பாவம்! அது எப்படி முடியும். ஆனால் விதியை யாரால் விலக்க முடியும். பிரிந்து விட்டார்கள். இராமன் யாது செய்வான். சீதையைப்பிரிந்த இராமன் சுக்கிரீவனையடைகிறான். அடைந்து அவன் சிநேகிதம் பெறுகிறான். ஒரே ஒருநோக்கத்துடன் தான். அவன் சகோதான் வாலியைச் சுக்கிரீவன் விருப் பப்படி கொல்லுகிறான். இதற்குப் பிரதியுபகாரமாகச் சுக்கிரீவன் இராம னது எண்ணத்திற்கிசைய பலரையும் பல திக்குகட்கும் சீதையைப் பார்க்கும் படி அனுப்புகிறான். அங்ஙனம் அனுப்பப்பட்டோருள் அநுமனும் ஒரு வன். அவன் இலங்கையை நோக்கிச் செல்கிறான். சீதையைப் பிடிப்பதற் காகத் தான்.
நாட்கள் ஓடி மறைந்தன. எல்லாரும் இராமனிடம் வந்து ''கண்டி லேம்'' என்கின்றனர். ஆனால் அது மன் இன் னும் வரவில்லை. தவணையும் கடந்து விட்டது; இன்னும் அனுமன் வரவில்லை; அவனிடத்தில் தான் இராம னுடைய முழு நம்பிக்கையும் இருந்த து. அவன் நற்செய்தியுடன் வருவான் என்பது இராமனது எண்ணம். சீதையைப்பற்றிய தகவல் அறிய ஆவல் கொண்டிருந் தான். அவனுடைய இருதயம் இடிந்துவிடும் போலிருந்தது. அநுமன் இலங்கையில் சீதையைப் பிடிக்கப் பல நாட்கள் சென் றன. குறி த்த தவணையும் கடந்துவிட்டது. சீதையைக் காணாமல் இராமன் முன் போவ தில்லை என்று தீர்மானித்துவிட்டான் அநுமன். அவன் எண்ணியபடியே சீதையைக் கண்டான்; உடனே இராமனிடம் போனான்: இராமன் என்ன மனநிலையில் இருப்பான் என்பது அநுமனுக்குத் தெரியும், ''கண்டனன் குறிப்பினால் உணரும் கொள்கையான்'' அவன். என்ன யா திரிச் சொன்னால் சஞ்சலப்பட்டுக் கொண்டிருக்கும் அவனது மனம் நிம்மதியடையும் என்ப தும் அவனுக்குத் தெரியும். இதில் அவனுக்கு 1st Class Honours உண்டு. Ph. D. என்றாலும்கூட இழுக்காகாது, இவைஎல்லாவற்றிலும் கைதேர்ந்த அநுமன் போனான். ''கண்டனன்'' என்றான். இதைக்கேட்டதும் இரா மன் சந்தோஷமடைந்தான். ஆனந்தக்கூத்தாடினான் இருந் தாலும் ''சந் தேகம் கொண்டான். சீதை அங்கிருத்தல்கூடும்; ஆனால் அவள் இப்போ தும் கற்புடையவளாயிருக்கிறாளோ; நான் அவளை மீண்டும் ஏற்கலாமோ; ஒருசமயம் இராவணனின் துர்எண்ணத்திற்கு ஆளாகியிருந்தால்..............'' இது தான் அவனது சந்தேகம் மனம் குழம்பிக்கொண்டிருந்தது. முகத் தில் சந்தோஷத்துளிகூட இல்லை இதெல்லாவற்றையும் நமது அநுமன்

ஏற்கெனவே அறிந்தவன்போல அச்சந்தேகம் இராமன து உள்ளத்திலிருந்து அகலும்படி
''கற்பினுக்கணியை'' என்று திட்டவட்டமாகக் கூறுகிறான், சத்தியம் கூடச் செய்யத் தயாராகலி ருந்தான். இச்சந்தேகம் மறைய வேறு ஒரு சந்தேகம் தோன்றியது. அது பின்வருமாறு; அநுமன் தன து கண்களால் கண்டானோ? அல்லது வேறு யாராவது கூறக் கேட்டு இப்படிக் கூறுகி றானோ? என்பது தான், இதையறிந்த அநுமன் இராமனது ஐயந் திரிபற ''கண்களால்'' என்று வாய்கூசா து கம்பீரமாகக் கூறுகிறான், அடுத்தாற் போலக் குறுக்கு விசாரணை ஆரம்பிக்கிறது. ''அப்படியாயின் எங்கே கண் டாய்'' என வினவுகிறான் இராமன், ''தெண்டிரை அலைகடல் இலங்கைத் தொன்னகர்'' என்று அநுமன் கூறுகிறான். இப்போது முழுப்பாட்டையும் பாருங்கள்.
''கண்டனன் கற்பினுக் கணியைக் கண்களால் தெண்டிரை அலைகடல் இலங்கைத் தொன்னகர் அண்டர் நாயக இனித்துறத்தி யையும் பண்டுன துயரம் என்று அநுமன் பண்ணுவான்'' இப்படியாகப் படம்பிடித்துக் காட்டும் கம்பரின் காவியமான கம்ப ராமாயணத்தை வாசித்தின் புறுவோமாக. கம்பரின் காலடியைத்தானும் காணாது தமிழில் நல்ல சரக்கு இல்லை என்று குறைகூறும் நண்பர்களுக்கு நாம் மேற்படி வியாசத்தை அர்ப்பணம் செய்கிறோம். இனிமேலாகுதல் மறைந்து கிடக்கும் மாணிக்கங்களைப் பொறுக்கி எடுங்கள்.ஆகாதமிழே! உம்மை நாம் என்றென்றும் துதிப்போமாக.

வைதலிற் புலமை. By. சி. கணபதிப்பிள் ளை, S. S. C, (A) சொல்லம்பு வில்லம்பு இரண்டினுங் கொடியது சொல்லம்பே. சொல் லம்பினை எய்ய வல்லவர் புலவர்களே. சொல்லம்பினா லாக்கப்பட்ட வடு வையமுள்ளளவு மாறாது. எனவே வில்வீரரிலும் சொல்வீரர் டீ'லியரா வர்; சொல்வீரராகிய புலவர் தம் புலமையைப் போற்றிப் பாடியும் காண்பிப்பர். தூற்றிப் பாடியும் காண்பிப்பர்; அழகனைக் கோரனென்றும் அழகற்றவனை மாரனென்றும் மாற்றிப்பாடவும், அச்சொற்களைத் தேற்றிப்பாடவும் வல்ல வர் அன்னார். வசைதலிற் புலமைபெற்றதெங்ஙனமெனச் சிறிது ஆராய்வாம்
ஓர் முறை இரட்டையரெனப் பெயரிய புலவர்கள் விநாயகர் கோயி லொன்றை யடைந்து, தாம் வருந்தியுழைத்த பொருளை ஒரு கிழியாய்க் கட்டி வைத்துவிட்டு நீராடச் சென்றனர். திரும்பிவந்து பார்த்தபொழுது முடிச்சவிழ்க்கப்பட் டிருந் தலைக் கண்டு வெகுண்டு,
"'தம்பியோ பெண்திருடி தாயாருடன் பிறந்த வம்பனோ நெய்திருடும் மாமாயன்-அம்புவியில் ழத்தபிள்ளை யாரேன் முடிச்சவிழ்த்தீர் போமோ கோத் திரத்திற்குற்ற குணம்,'' எனப் பாடினர்.

எவ்வளவு துணிச்சல்? கடவுளரென்றுங் கவனியாது விநாயகரை முடிச்சவிழ்த்த கள்வன் என்றும், அவரது தம்பியாராகிய முருகவேளைப் பெண் திருடிய கள்வனென்றும், மாமனாகிய மாயனை வெண்ணெய் திருடிய கள்வனென்றும் வாய்கூசா து வைகின்றார்கள் - இதுமட்டோ? இவர்கள் திருடர்களாயிருப்பதால் திருடுதல் இவர்கள து கோத்திரத்திற் குற்ற தண மென்றும் வசைகிறார்கள், ஒருவர் செய்தகுற்றத் திற்காக அவரது உற்றார் உறவினர் யாவரையும் சந் திக் கிழுக்கின்றனரே! இப்புலவர்களின் நாத் துணி வும், புலமையுமன்றோ விநாயகர் மீதும் வசைமொழிகளை அடுக்கச் செய்தன! இத்தன்மைத்தான புலவர்கள் தம்மோடொத்த மனிதரை எளி தில் விடு வார்களா?
ஒருநாள், காளமேகம் எனப் பெயர்பெற்ற பிறிதொருபுலவர் பந்தி யொன்றிலிருந்து போசனமருந்திக்கொண்டிருந்தார். அவர் பக்கலில் நீண்ட குடுமியுடையா னொருவனிருந்து உணவருந்திக்கொண்டிருந்தான். ஒருகால் அவன் குடுமி அவிழ்ந்து இலைச்சோற்றின்மேல் வீழ்ந்தது. இது கண்டு அவன் தன் குடுமியைப் பின்புறமுதற குடுமியிலிருந்த சோற்றுப்பருக்கை புலவாது சோற்றின்மேல் வீழ்ந்தது. உடனே கோபங்கொண்ட வப்புலவர் சொற் சாங்களை அவன்மீது பொழியத் தொடங்கினார். காளமேக மல்லவா அவர்?
சுருக் கவிழ்ந்த முன்குடுமிச் சோழியா சோற்றுப் பெருக் கெழந்த வாயா புலையா - திருக்குடந்தை நாயா நரியாவுன் நாய்ழகழஞ் சேய்வடிவுந்
தாயார்தான் கண்டிலளோ தான். எனவாயில் வந்தவாறெல்லாம் வைகின்றார். 'முன்குடுமிச் சோழியா', 'பொருக்கெழுந்த வாயா', புலையா', 'திருக்குடந்தை நாயா, 'நரியா' எனப் பல இழிசொற்கள் கொண்டு வசைகிறார். கலைவாணி வதியும் நாவினால் இவ் விழி சொற்களைக் கூ றலாமோ என்று திகைக்கிறோம் நாம். ஆனால் புலவர் வைதலில் தமது புலமையை வெளிப்படுத்த முயலுகிறார். துப்புரவாக உண வருந்தத் தெரியாதவன் அழகனாயிருந் தாலும் உண்மையில் அழகற்றவனே. எனவே புலவர் கண் ணுக்கு அவன் பொருக்கெழுந்த வாயனாகவும் புலையனாக வும், நாயாகவும் தோன்றுகிறான். அவன் தகுந்த முறையில் வளர்க்கப்படா மையாற்றானே இவ்வசுத்தமான முறையில் நடந்து கொண்டான் என்று நினைந்த புலவர் அவனது தாயையும் இழித்துக் கூறுகிறார். என்னே இப் புலவர்களின் நாவன்மை!
இன்னொருகால் காளமேகப் புலவர் திருநாகை நோக்கிச் செல்கையில் தாசி ஒருத்தி பாடக்கேட்டு அவளை அவமானப்படுத்த எண்ணி,
வாழ்த்து திருநாகை வாகான தேவடியாள் பாழ்த்த குரலெடுத்துப் பாடினாள்-நேற்றுக் கழதைகெட்ட வண்ணான்கண் டேன்கண்டே னென்று
பழுதை யெடுத்தோடி வந்தான் பார். எனப் பாடினர். (பழுதை- கயிறு)
அப்பெண்ணின் குரலினிமை அவருக்குப் பிடிக்கவில்லைப் போலும். முந்தியநாள் தன து கழுதையை இழந்த வணணான் ஒருவன் அவளது குரல் கேட்டு, கழுதை சமீபத்தில் நிற்பதாக எண்ணி, கயிற்றோடு அங்கு தோன் றினானெனக் கூறி நகையாடுகின்றார் புலவர், அவளுருடய குரலைக் கேட்ட

காலத்தின் கோலம்

''ஓம், ஓம், ஓம்' என்று கடல் ஒலித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தது. 'ஜிலு, லு' என்று காற்றுத் தவழ்ந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. கடற்கரையிற் வெண் ண லிலும் நண்பனும் நானும் உட்கார்ந் திருந்து வார்த்தையாடிக்கொண் இந்தோம். கடற்கரையிற் காற்று வாங்கப் பல ஆடவர் களும் மகளிரும் ந்திருந்தனர். நண்பனும் நானும் ஏதேதோ பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்தோம்.
எங்கள் பின்புறமாகச் சிலர் ஆங்கிலத் திற் பேசுவதுபோற் கேட்டது. டையிடையே சிரிக்கும் சப்தமுங் கலந்து வந்த து. யாம் திரும்பிப் பார் தோம், நான்கு பெண் மணிகளின் உருவம் எங்கள் கட்புலனிற்கெ திர்ப் ட்டன. நால்வரும் ஏ றத் தாளச் சமவயது உடையவர்களாயிருந் தனர். தினாறு அல்லது பதினேழு வய திருக் கலாம் -. கால்களிற் செருப்பு மாட் யிருந் தனர். முழங்கால்வரையிலுயர்ந்த வெண்ணிறச்சட்டை தரித்திருந் னர். இவர்களின் தோற்றத்திலிருந்து கல்லூரி மாணவிகள் என ஊகித் க்கொண்டோம். அவர்கள் நான்கு திசையுங் கண்களைச் சுழற்றியும் ரிப்புங் கனைப்புமாக ஆங்கிலம் பேசிக்கொண்டும் அவ்விடம்விட்டேகி
இக்காட்சியைப் பார்த்திருந்த என் நண்பன், ''ஐயோ, இது என்ன ாலம்; உலகமே தலைகீழாகிவிட்டதே'' என்று பெருமூச்சு விட்டான். "வன்முகம் இரக்கக்குறியைக் காட்டிற்று 'எனப்பா, இப்படிச் சொல்லு றாய்?'' என்று நான் கேட்டேன். நண்பன் சிறிது ஆத்திரத்துடனும் செனத்துடனும் பேசத் தொடங்கினான். பார்த்தாயா எங்கள் நாட்டுப் பண் மணிகளை ; அவர்கள் நடையுடை பாவனையெல்லாம், அந்தோ, ருங்கே மா றிவிட்டன. ஏதோ இரண்டொரு ஆங்கிலம் கற்றுவிட்டுத் ங்களை ஆங்கிலப் பெண்களாவே பாவிக்கின் றனர். அவர்களுடைய நிற மான்றே அவர்களுக்குத் தடையாயிருக்கிறது! அதுவும் இடந்தருமேல் வர்கள் உண்மையான ஆங்கிலப் பெண்களாவார்கள். இவர்கள்மதி ருந்தவாறென்னே? இவர்கள் படிப்பது இதற்காகத்தானா சரீரமும் ளரவளர அவர்களணியஞ் சட்டையும் மேல்நோக்கி ஏறுகிறதே! ந்தோ இவர்கள் தமிழர்களன்றோ? தமிழ் மகளிர்க்கே சிறப்பாகக் கூறப் நம் நாணம், மடம், அச்சம், பயிர்ப்பு என்னும் நான்கு குணங்களையும் தறித் தள்ளிவிட்டார்களே. தம் மானங் குலமானமிரண்டையுந் துறந் ார்களே. மங்கலந் தரும் மஞ்சள் பூசியதற்குப் பதிலாக வெண்புதியை மகத் துக்கப்பிச் செங்குரங்குகளைப் போலத் தங்களை ஆக்கிக்கொள்கின்
னரே
பெற்றோர் கள் எவ்வளவு கஷ்டப்பட்டாலும், தாங்கள் நினைத்த னைத்த மாதிரி உடுப்புகளை நேரத்துக்கொருவிதமாக மாற்றி மாற்றிக் கட் யோ தங்களை அலங்கரித்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டும்? மானத்தைக் காப்ப ற்கும் சரீர ஆரோக்கியத்துக்கும் உடைதரிப்பதை மறந்து, ஏதோ '' நாக நம், நாகரீகம்'' என்று பிதற்றுகிறார்களே.

அப்போது என் நண்பன் ''இது கலிகாலம்'' என்று சொல்லி. கொண்டே பின் வரு மாறு பாடத் துவங்கிவிட்டான்.
