This is a companion volume to "A NALLURCLAN AND CONNECTIONS"prepared in 1995 and is similar to it in its concept.
Besides my own knowledge, the main source of information has been what Ponnu Achchi, daughter of Pariariyar Perambalam, had narrated to me long ago. I have found the excellent Genealogical Tables prepared by Dr.P.Swamy and his son Premnath very useful. Dr PSw"y has also helped me with additional information. The genealogical record left behind by "Koad.P." E.Ponniah referred to in Table 2 is a very valuable document. The valliambal Memorial "Kalved referred to in Table 3 is a literary masterpiece embodying much useful details. It is a good exa"P of the practice of preserving, in eulogised verse, the ancestry, achievements, etc. of a departed individual; this has been avery desirable Tamil tradition. -
The years of birth and demise of the older generation shown int computed; these, though not accurate, are nevertheless of indicative value. -
The benefit of research done by M.Theagarajah has greatly enhanced the value of the compilation.
his compilation have largely been
How to use these Tables The genealogy of a person is conveniently traced by first ascertaining his age No. and Table No. from the Index found at the end of the book; then trace backwards for his forebears and forwards for his descendants
Example: The genealogy of : Dr.G. Chelvadoray
His Forebears. The Index shows that his name appears in Tables 15 & 30, found on Pages 98.33. Table's
shows his parentage and that his father 14.1 Ganapathipilai was the eldest offspring of his parents found in Table 14. Similarly, his mother 4.1 sinnammah was the eldest child of her parents whose names appear on Table 4. Reference to that Table shows that Sinnamah was the daughter of 1.3 Ponnu Achchi. She, in turn, was the third child of her parents Pariariyar Perambalam and Sinnathamgam found on Table 1. His Descendants . . While Table is shows Dr.Chelvadoray's parentage etc., Table found on Page 33 shows his own family. The note "children - see Table ...", found after each child indicates where the names of the children and children's children are to be four

Bhadra Kali Kovil, Sangarathai. Located amidst the paddy fields at the village entrance, Devi safeguards the village folks from evil spirits, pestilence and epidemics.

Page 5
NT ROI) UCTION
Sangarathai, a village in the Valikamam West Division of the Jaffna Peninsula, is on the Anaikkoddai - Vaddukoddai Road and is about eight miles North West of Jaffna Town. It is surroundcd by extensive rice fields of the Valukai Aru basin and is a cluster village of Vaddukoddai
The highly fertile red soil prevalent in neighbouring Valikamam North does not prevailhere in the West Division. Fresh water is somewhat scarce, due presumably, to salinity infiltration of lagoon waters through the Valuki Aru watercourse.
The village, though small, boasts of Hindu temples, a school and a Kulam (Tank). Vast paddy fields of the lower Valuki Arubasin almost surround the village.
The Name "Sangarathai"
The name of the village is somewhat unusual and sounds unique. I have not been able to ascertain for certain, how the name originated. It may be that the village derived its name from a medicinal herb"Arathai" (L. Galanga), the red variety of which is "Seng Arathai", like "Senthamrai" and "Sengkalanir". Another variety of the Arathai plant is "Sitt - Arathai" or chitharathai (L.Galanga minor) which is also of high medicinal value. "Seng-Arathai" became "Sengarathai" or Sangarathai, in due course. We have to be content with the above, in the absence of more authentic information.
The Pathira Kali Amman Kovil
To the Sangarathai folks, their much valued facet is the Pathira Kali Amman Temple, in the paddy fields of Piddiyampathy. The temple is beautifully sited amidst vast stretch of paddy fields, with a well built and terraced tank (Kerni) in front. It is an ideal site, conducive to accommodation of large crowds, with ease. The origin of the shrine is an interesting tradition of yesteryear. In the year 1678, Muthanmynar, a leading resident of the place, observing that the large spreading tamarind tree growing at this spot was harmful to paddy cultivation, decided to do away with it. Workmen available from Vaddukoddai, then developing fast, all refused to fell the tree, as it already had a holy association. So the irate resident started setting about felling the tree himself. When, lo! acobra from the tree chased him off. That night, Kali Devi in a dreambesought him to erect a shelter for her, there. He forthwith erected a humble shed for Devi, by the side of the tree and that very soon developed into a Kali Kovil.
Now large mandapams and halls adorn the site and several improvements have been added. A unique feature at this temple, not found anywhere else, is the installation of two deities, that of Kali Devi and that of Veeraputhira Murthi together, as presiding Murthies in the "Aathimoolam" sanctum. This is not common practice; nevertheless it is in keeping with a Puranic legend, in which Veeraputhirar was created by Lord Siva, and Kali Devi by His Consort Ambal, for the common purpose of overcoming Thakkan. In any case, as originally the tree was associated with reverence to Veeraputhirar and as Devi besought a place, both the deities are being venerated here.
The ancient tamarind tree is still there by the sanctum and pujas are performed to the Veeraputhirar mandapam there.
The temple is well maintained with regular pujas; the annual festival attracts large crowd. That Kali Devi, reigning from her vantage position at the entrance in the outskirts, safeguards their village from the advent of epidemics, infectious diseases, influence of evil spirits and other afflictions, is a firm belief that is well rooted in the community.

The Village School
Not very long ago, there came to live in Sangarathaia retired educationist by the name of Hensman. He had the reputation of having been a successful educationist. He built a pretty cottage facing the Sangarathai Kulam (Tank) and settled down, enjoying his stay there with his family.
With a desire to spend his days usefully he used to help the village lads in their studies, at his house. Eventually that became more organised and classes were held in a small shed in his garden All the activities ceased with his demise, but even to this day, the local folks always refer to the house as "Chaddampiyar Veedu" and the garden as "Chaddampiyar walawu".
Years later, in 1934, Sitiawan N. Gnapathipillai the philanthropist new owner of that property, desirous of perpetuating the educational environment of the premise, rebuilt the old shed and arranged for a local retired person to hold some classes there. It was of indifferent success. About two years later, the shed was separated from the residence and named Sinnammah Vidyalayam. It was later handed over to the Hindu Board of Education, which was then a very active organisation with Advocate S.Rajaratnam M.L.C, as its Chairman.
The entire School Building was later improved with extensions added on, and Sinnammah Vidyalayam commenced to function as a recognised educational establishment in the Peninsula.
When the Government took over all the Schools, this School was also taken over and became a Government School.
The Sangarathai Kulam (Tank)
Temples and school apart, the main asset to the environment of Sangarathai is its Kulam. Situated by the main Road, with a water spread area of about ten acres and with roads on all three sides, it undoubtedly is the pride ornament of the village. Sangarathai Kulam receives the flood drainage from all its surrounding area of the village. When full, the excess water is drained away through a culvert on the western Road. In a normal year, there would be water in the tank till about the advent of the South-West monsoon in the month of May. Such detention is very beneficial to life in the village; it helps to sustain freshwater levels in the neighbouring wells; it also sustains plant-life in the water such as water lily, lotus, etc. More importantly, it provides grazing ground for the village cattle.
By the banks of such a pleasant benevolent asset, there once lived over a hundred years ago, Perambalam who was a leader in his class. His reputation for treating children's ailments was of the highest and Sangarathai too gained prominence.
Pariariyar Perambalam did well in life; his spouse was a lady of high position, a relation of the then leading social figure Chellapah Pillai, Chief Justice of Travancore, or as was said in Tamil "Malayalathu RasaChellapah Pillai". The prosperous couple reared an illustrious family of eight daughters: Sivakolunthu, better known as Mootha Akka, Sinnachipillai, Ponnachipillai etc.,etc., they were all married well and an illustrious progeny ensued -. their genealogical story is narrated in the pages that follow.

Pariariyar Perambalam of Sangarathai (c. 1820-1885) m. Sinnathangam, relation of T.Chellapah Pillai, Chief Justice Travancore
11 1.2 1.3 1.4 1.5 1.6 1.7 1.8
Pariariyar Perambalam, a reputed physician of Sangarathai, was a well to do person of high social position, who lived during the nineteenth century. He was a specialist in treating children's diseases and his reputation spread all over the Peninsula, making humble Sangarathai a well known village in Jaffna. He married Sinnathangam, a relative of Vannarpannai T.Chellapah Pillai, Chief Justice of Travancore and a person of high status. The couple had eight daughters:
1.1 Sivakolunthu (c. 1850-1915), better known as Mootha Akka, the eldest of the eight daughters; was married to Kandakkar Velupillai.
The term "Kandakkar" is an adaptation of the English word "Conductor" and refers to a person of responsibility commanding a large labour force in Estates. Here, the term refers to a PWD Overseer, who during those years was a much respected person of high social standing and generally well to do, like Chelliah Kandakkar of Puloly.
Mootha Akka and Kandakkar Velupillai had seven children - see Table 2.
1.2 Sinnachipillai (c. 1853-1918), the second daughter, was married to Thambu Thamotharampillai of Aiyanarkoviladi and had five children - see Table 3.
1.3 Ponnachipillai (c. 1855-1945) or Ponnu Achchi Pillai, popularly referred to as Ponnu Akka or Ponnu Achchi, the third daughter was very well known to me. She was in good health and very active in 1932 when I married Ratnam, her granddaughter. She lived for many years afterwards. She was a fountain of information and would narrate to me her genealogy and amusing stories of her younger days, which have
enabled me to prepare this compilation.
Ponnu Achchi was married to Somanathar, who enjoyed an Estate employment - children see Table 4.
1.4 The fourth daughter was married to Thiruarurar, a much respected person from Aiyanarkoviladi in Vannarpannai and had two children - see Table 6.
1.5 On the demise of 1.4 above, Thiruarurar married the fifth daughter and had two more children - see Table 6(a).
1.6 Annappillai was married to Poothathamby and had a son Vairavanathar see Table 6(b)
1.7 Another daughter was the elderly lady known as Pariariyar Veeddu Peithi, whom I had met on several occasions at Sangarathai; her son was Pariariyar M.Kandiah - see Table 7.
1.8 Theivanaipillai's granddaughter G.Thillaivanam was married to G.Poologasingam and had eight children - see Table 7(a).

Sivakolunthu, better known as Mootha Akka by every one as she was the eldest of the sisters, had been highly respected by all.
Kandakkar Velupillai: As explained under Table 1, the term "Kandakkar", originating from the days of the Pioneer Labour Force in the last century, refers to some one who functions like the PWD Overseer of today, but was of even higher social standing and greater responsibilities. He and Mootha Akka had seven children:
2.1 Letchumipillai (c. 1875-1950), their eldest daughter, was married to Kandakkar T.Suppiah. Advocate S.R.Kanaganayagam was their only child - see Table 8.
2.2 Sellachipillai was married to Manickam, children - see Table 9.
2.3 Ammachi.
24 Achchikuddi alias Ponnammah (c. 1877-1935) was married to Vaithilingam, son of K.Velupillai and Achchikuddi of Neerveli and had three children - see Table 10.
It is of interest to note that the above 24 Achchikuddi and 2.6 Selvathurai below - sister and brother, from Sangarathai, married, as maathu sadangu in traditional fashion, a brother and sister Vaithilingam and Sivakolunthu respectively of Neerveli. Vaithilingam's other sister, Sellachipillai, was married to Elaiyapper Ponniah F.M.S Pensioner. Ponniah, usually referred to as "Koaddaipuram" Ponniah, lived in a house by the ancient residence of the Tamil Kings in Nallur, Jaffna. This venerable person has left behind a record of the lineage of his clan and of several other persons from the era of the Tamil Royalty of Jaffna. Much valuable information has been gathered from this valuable document, which is now preserved by his granddaughter Sharadha, wife of Dr.P.Swamy (Table 35), of Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.
2.5 Sathasivam.
2.6 Selvathurai married Sivakolunthu, a sister of V.Vaithilingam, spouse of the above 2.4 Achchikuddi, and had five children - see Table ll.
2.7 Rasammah.

Muthachi (c.1885-1968) always reminds me of her mother Ponnu Achchi. She was content to play a minor roll in the affairs of
the family.

4.1 - 4.2 4.3 Sinnammah Muthachi Dr.Parambalam
Ponnachipillai or Ponnu Achchi Pillai, better known as Ponnu Akka or as just "Achchi" to many of us, was the third daughter of Pariariyar Perambalam and Sinnathangam. I came in contact with her when I married her granddaughter Ratnam, daughter of 4.1Sinnammah. I have had several hours of conversation with her. She was an active and moving about "freelancer". Though her son-in-law was master of the house, she was virtually top. I can even now well visualise her small shrunk dark figure walking with a gentle stoop.
She would often describe, much to the amusement of others, how she got scared at the first sight of her husband Somanathar, whom she thought was like a black "Mundam". Somanathar was the son of Ambalavanar, who was the son of Sinnathamby.
Achchi survived her husband and lived to aripe old age (c.90). She and Somanathar had three children:
4.1 Sinnammah (c. 1880-1934), the elder daughter of Ponnu Akka and Somanathar, was married to 14.1 N.Ganapathipillai of Chithankerni. She ably stood by her husband in all his activities, when they went to seek their fortune in Malaya and the family prospered. I came to know her from 1932, when I married her daughter Ratnam; by that time she had declined in health and passed away a few years later. They had three children - see Table 15.
4.2 Muthachi (c. 1885-1968), the younger sister, was content to play a minor role in the family affairs. She was married to Ambalavanar and there was no issue. She survived her husband and lived to an old age.
4.3 Dr.Parampalam (1892-1956), married his cousin 14.5 Rasammah and established himself in Sitiawan with a lucrative medical practice, children - see Tables 18 & 19.

Page 9
As mentioned in the previous Table 4, Somanathar was the husband of Ponnu Akka. Somanathar's brother was Visuavanathar, familiarly referred to as Visu Appah. Visu Appah married at Sandilipai and thus commenced the Sandilipai connection. He had four children by this marriage - as shown in Table 5:
Table 5

There were four children from the above marriage:-
5.1 Sinnathurai, who had four children: Thuraiappah, Selvarajah, Rajarajeswary and Thiraviam.
5.2 Ponnuthurai married his cousin 14.3 Sivakolunthu, a sister of 14. Sitiawan N.Ganapathipillai and had six children; on her demise, he married Muthammah of Pathameni, Achchuveli - see Tables 20
& 20a).
5.3 Rasarethinam, who had five children: Thangaratnam, Rajaluxmy (Nesam) whom I had seen at Sangarathai at times, Thavarajah, Tharmarajah and Thiyagarajah.
5.4 Chellathurai, who had five children: Ambalavanar (Ambalam), Kandasamy (Singaram), Nadarasah, Sinnathamby and Mankayatkarasi. t
* Note: Visuvanathar had a son Kanapathipillai, by an earlier marriage (very likely it was at Aiyanarkoviladi ?). Kanapathipillai had a son Velautham who worked in the Jaffna Municipality.

Thiruarurar was a much respected resident of Aiyanarkoviladi, Vannarpannai, Jaffna. His sister Rajaletchumi had a son Mylvaganam, by her first marriage with Sangarapulle. Mylvaganam married the above 6.1 Kannammah, and had two sons - see Table 21.
On Sangarapulle's demise Rajaletchumi married Kandiah and had a son Vaithilingam alias Appiah. Appiah's son was Proctor K.V.Navaratnam, who was V.T.President, later Police Magistrate and eventually retired as District Judge.
Kandiah was a close relation of Kathiravelu of Vannarpannai.

Th i nection
Chithankerni is a village about five miles North of Sangarathai. Very likely it got its name from a Chittiyar, mystic or a savant and "Kerni" meaning a small tank or moat. The village "lusiasa'
founded by the Kerni where the savant spent his days performing thapas. Very likely the well known ancient Chithankerni Sivan Kovil at the site is a consequent legacy.
The Sangarathai - Chithankerni connection became to be effected when 4.1 Sinnammah, daughter of Somanathar and Ponnuachipillai and granddaughter of Pariariyar Perambalam and Sinnathangam of Sangarathai, was married to Ganapathipillai, eldest son of Nagamuthu and Ponnammah (Ponnu Apachchi) of Chithankerni.
The family of Nagamuthu and Ponnu Apachchi is shown below in Table 14.
Table 14

Nagamuthu of Chithankerni married Ponnammah and had, as far as I am aware, seven children; but. his eldest son Ganapathipillai (my father-in-law) always maintained that he was one of sixteen, however Idiscount it, as Iknow that 16 was his favourite number. So it is to be assumed that Nagamuthu and Ponnu Apachchi had, as a matter of fact, only seven children :-
14.1 Ganapathipillai (c.1875-1938), the eldest child, proceeded to Malaya and made a fortune. не married Sinnammah, grand daughter of Pariariyar Perambalam of Sangarathai - see Table 15.
142 Nagalingam, who married Muthammah of Iruvalai and had six children - see Table 16.
14.3 Sivakolunthu, who was married to her second cousin 5.2 V.Ponnuthurai, son of A. Visuvanathar, and had six children - see Table 20.
14.4 Sathasivam had no issue.
14.5 Rasammah was married to her cousin 4.3 Dr.S.Parampalam, son of A.Somanathar, children - see Table 18.
14.6 Murugesu first married 3.3 Letchumi (Myna) and had two children. On her demise, he married Packiam, also of Sangarathai, and had two more children - see Tables 17& 7a,
14.7 Kandiah, who late in life married Packiam of Chithankerni, had no issue.

14.1 Ganapathipillai, well known as "Sitiawan", was a person with a personality. High education was not one of his assets, but he had enormous strength of character and determination, that is to say "Guts". With this as his only asset he migrated to Malaya, early in life, to seek afortune, and the Goddess smiled on him
The virgin land he cleared for rubber planting, in the Malayan village of Sitiawan in Perak State,
revealed much wanted rock outcrops, which he gainfully exploited as metal quarries. Some of the quarries later revealed tin ore too and his fortune was made. He then invested in rubber plantations in a big way and earned the name of "Millionaire Planter".
Sitiawan was a tall and well built powerful personality, who made his presence felt. When attending functions and weddings, he would deliberately wait awhile till all are seated and go in late; even after entering, he would wait and see and be seen, before he took a seat, always in the front. He was very popular in the Clubs and was known to be a good mixer, as he got along very well with the European Malayan and Chinese planting community. He would always travel first class by train and there he could be seen seated holding conspicuously the "Times"Newspaper to impress the onlookers, although he did not know any English.
He made large donations to charity and contributed to the War Fund. He founded a Tamil School
"Ganesha Vidyalaya" at Simpang Ampat, in Perak. The Perak State honoured him by making hima "Justice of Peace" and a Member of the Local Sanitary Board.
He returned to Jaffna with his family in the late 1920's and settled down at Sangarathai, participating in public undertakings and subscribing liberally to local charities.
Sitiawan married 4.1 Sinnammah, the elder daughter of Ponnu Achchi and Somanathar. She ably stood by him in all his activities in Malaya and the family prospered. When she died, the fond husband founded in her memory a School in their village and named it "Sinnammah Vidyalayam", which has since become a flourishing institution. They had three children:
15.1 Dr.G.Chelvadoray (1907-1978) married 20.3 Rethinam, children - see Table 30
15.2 Ratnam (1910-1964) was married to Engineer S.Arumugam, children - see Table 31.
