V.M.THIAGARAJAH - THE FAMILY
VADIVEL MURUGAN THIAGARAJAH is the scion of a distinguished family that exercised great influence in the religious social and economic spheres in the North and East for well over a century. His ancestry could be traced to Mana Mudaliyar of renown. Coming down the line his progeny is as follows:-

The family hails from SITHANKERNY, VADDUKODDAI and later made SANGUVELY MANIPAY and Batticaloa their second homes. In recent times it was VADIVEL'S great grand father MATTAKALAPPU VYTHILINGAM who brought the family into limelight. Having come to Batticaloa to trade in arecanuts as a boy of sixteen, he expanded his business in all directions and very soon built for himself a business empire there. He was the pioneer who opened coconut plantations and brought vast acres of land under paddy cultivation in the present Batticaloa and Ampara Districts. Those were days when travelling facilities were limited. He acquired a fleet of schooners which provided transport not only from Batticaloa to Jaffna but also touched on all important ports in the Island. Later the service was extended to some ports in India and Burma. While Asaipillai ran the coach service Vaithilingam provided the schooner service during the last decades of the 19th C and early decades of the 20th C. These schooners were manned by sailors from Valvettithurai and the

"THANDALES'- the captains were all Valvettithurai men. So much so Valvettithurai people consider Vaithilingam their man. And in recent articles there were mix-ups as there was a great Vaithilingampillai at Valvettithurai also during this time. It is recorded that Vaithiliugam bequeathed 16 schooners and 21 elephants to his son Mudaliyar Markandan. It could be said that Vaithilingam contributed in a great way to the economic development of Batticaloa District.
But it is as a philanthrophist he has found a place in history. His philanthrophic acts were a legion and there was no worthy cause in Jaffna or Batticaloa that has not received a helping hand from Vaithilingam during his time. He encouraged the founding of Hindu Schools in Jaffna and later in Batticaloa. Among his contributions to schools two deserve mention - Rs 1000/= to Jaffna Hindu and Rs. 2000/= t0 Manipay Hindu, big sums those days. He was the first to set up a school to train Brahmin priests at Uduvil
He set up "Madams' at Kataragama, Keerimalai, Uhanai and Thiruchenthur and provided free meals during Festivals. These Madams were massive structures and the Keerimalai Madam was also used as a conference hall those days. It should be noted that big conferences in Jaffna like the Annual Sessions of the Youth congress where political leaders from India and South Ceylon participated were held at the Vythilingammadam at Keerimalai. The madam still stands proclaiming his glory. People who visit Kataragama during festival days then, could not have missed the delicious meals that were served at his Kataragama Madam.
He also built temples and made endowments to existing ones. He built the main structures of the Sithankerny Pillaiyar Temple Sithankerny Sivan Temple and Vaddukoddai Thuraddipanai Amman Temple, Vasantha Mandapam at Valvettithurai Sivan Temple, Navatkiraha Mandapam at Keerimalai Naguleswara Temple and made rich endowments to the Vallipura Temple. Sanguvely pillaiyar Temple was all his own. There are other temples for which he supplied Timber etc. There was a famine in Jaffna District in the 1890s and he helped the Government agent

agent in the Relief work by bringing shiploads of rice from Batticaloa and Burma and distributing that free. Mr. TWYNAM the then Government agent has thanked him for this in one of the government publications.
MUDALIYAR MARKANDAN
Vaithilingams' son Markandan was associated with his father in all his business activities even as a young man. He too proved himself to be a very successful businessman. He branched off in new directions such as timber business and taking contracts including Arrack rentals even in distant districts in the South such as Moratuwa. He also tried his hand in investing in plumbago

He continued the philanthrophic activities of his father. Such was his large-heartedness the people in the distant villages of Batticoaloa have given him a place in the Nattu Padal - the folk songs of Batticaloa.
His greatest service to the people of Batticaloa was in the field of Education. He set up a series of Schools, managed them for long periods and later handed them over to the Ramakrishna Mission. He can easily be considered the pioneer Hindu Educationist of Batticaloa District.
A list of the schools he set up is not available but from the acknowledgments made from time to time, we come to know them. I can remember Professor P. Chandrasegaram, Head of the Dept, of Education University of Jaffna, while delivering the founder memorial lecture at Victoria College in 1987 told us how Mudaliyar Markandan helped his father Pathakuddy Upathiyayar from Muthur to become a teacher, posted him to Markandan's Karativu school and later transferred him to his Mandur School as Head Master. He met a teacher there and got married to her, and that was Chandrasegaram's mother. Prof. Chandrasegaram paid a high tribute to Mudaliyar Markandan's services to education in Batticaloa District. He was to write a book on this but unfortunately he died soon after. The building of Anaipanthy

He was conferred the title of Mudaliyar - a prestigious title then - for all the services he did. As he was considered a person of great eminence public receptions were organised all over Batticaloa District. Thousands gathered at the receptions at Pottuvil and Kalmunai by the grateful Muslim Public and it is said such big receptions have not been surpassed to this day.
K.V.M. THIAGARAJAH

It was during his time that a calamity fell on the family when one Vander poorten claimed all their properties because of a mortgage by Mudaliyar Markandan. It was left to Thiagarajah (Senior) to fight a long drawn out case and redeem half the properties from Vander poorten.
Thiagarajah married Leckumy Ammah daughter of Notary Sithamparanathapillai, a leading practitioner as a Notary, a Tamil scholar and a great educationist who managed seven schools including Vaddukoddai Hindu College. He and his brother in law Mudaliyar Markandan were members of the first executive Committee of the Hindu Board of Education of which Sir Ponnampalam Ramanathan was President and Sir Waithilingam Duraiswany was secretary. -
* Notary Sithamparanathapillai married Kasamma ne edest daughter, of Mattakalappu Vythilingam. The wedding of Thiagarajah (Senior) and Leckumy Ammah is supposed to be the grandest wedding held in Jaffna in this century. It was held in 1923 and they had spent more than one lakh of rupees then. A decorated chariot drawn by elephants accompanied by the best of Natheswara musicians was a great attraction to the people of Jaffna at that time Thiagarajah (Senior) continued to do the work of the family but died young. K.V.M. Subramaniam and K.V.M. Manickavasagar, all of them men of distinction, however lived up to the family ideals.
VADIVEL MURUGAN THIAGARAJAH
Thiagarajahs' son was Vadivel Murugan. He went by the name of V.M. Thiagarajah. He had his early education at Batticaloa Methodist Central College and secondary Education at St. Thomas College, Mt. Lavinia. He was also for a time at Jaffna College Vaddukoddai. He went to Loyla College, Madras for his University Education, and secured his B. Commerce degree. After obtaining his degree he joined the firm of Turquand and Young for his training in Accountancy and passed out as an Accountant. He continued to work there from 1960 to 1965 and then went on to Samuel & Sons as Chief Accountant. He also served as Director there. Then he worked at Baihra Farms as Chief Accountant and was there from 1980 to 1994. Wherever he worked he devoted himself fully to his work and won the praise of his superiors. They all appreciated his diligence, sense of dedication and commitment to work. They knew that he was reliable and any assignment given to him was done thoroughly and completely. Even in sickness he did not forsake his responsibilities.
Those who worked under him looked up to him for guidance. They loved him because of his simplicity, Kindness, generosity and his never failing advice.
Being a member of an illustrious family he was called upon to attend to many Social duties. Besides attending social functions he was guide and philosopher to his many relations. He helped them in manifold ways.
Whatever work he undertook he gave his best to it. Only two years back the mantle of the arduous duties of the Chairman of the Vythilingam trust devolved on him.
He was Treasurer and later President of the Colombo Tamil Sangam a prestigious Association. As president of this Sangam he had an opportunity to serve the Tamil public at large. He took

many an innovative step for its advancement including starting a building programme. The new office and building of the Sangam were mainly his efforts.
As trustee of the Sanguvely Pillaiyar Temple he had direct control over its management. He was a life member of the Ramakrishna Mission and was responsible in introducing his daughter Meenakumari in its service.
All this he did silently without much ado that even close friends did not know that he was involved in so many service activities.
His attachment to his family was extraordinary. He was a tower of strength to his three sons, his only daughter and his devoted wife Ratneswary.
He lived as he should -ain paintiG airpist' and he now enjoys eternal happiness with his creator

தமிழ்ச் சங்கத்தின் பேரிழப்பு.
இலக்கியச் செம்மல், செ. குணரெத்தினம் தலைவர், கொழும்பு தமிழ்ச் சங்கம்
வீ. எம். தியாகராசா என்ற மாமனிதன் இறைவனடி சேர்ந்து விட்டார் , என்ற செய்திகேட்டு மிகுந்த துக்கத்தைச் சுமந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறோம். கொழும்புத் தமிழ்ச் சங்கம் தமிழ்ச் சான்றோர் பலரால் ஆரம்பிக்கப்பட்டு பொன்விழாவும், கண்ட பெருமைக்குரியது. இதை எவ்வெண்ணங்களுடன் சான்றோர் தொடக்கி வைத்தார்களோ அவஎண்ணங்கள் ஈடேற நாளும் உழைத்து நிற்கும் தாபனமிது. தியாகராசா போன்ற சான்றோரின் கடும் உழைப்பே இதன் பின்னணி என்றால் மிகையல்ல. அமைதியே உருவெடுத்த தோற்றம், கண்ணியம், நேர்மை. நிதானம் உள்ளத் தெளிவு, இவற்றின் ஒரு சேர்ந்த படிமமே தியாகராசா அவர்கள். தமிழ்ச் சங்கத்தைப் பொன்னே போல் போற்றியவர்கள். 1970 தொடக்கம், நீண்ட காலமாக ஆட்சிக் குழு உறுப்பினராகவும், பின்னர் பொருளாளராகவும், பின்னர் துணைத் தலைவராகவும், 1987 தொடங்கி 1989 வரை சங்கத் தலைவராகவும் பொறுப்புகள் பல வகித்தார்.
தமிழ வேள் கந்தசாமி, சங்கப் பொதுச் செயலாளர் அடிக்கடி குறிப்பிடுவது போல் தியாகராசாவை நினைத்தால் சங்கத்தின் மாடிக் கட்டிடம் மனதில் தோற்றம் தரும் என்பார்கள். தியாகராசா அவர்களின் கடும் உழைப்பின் பயனாக எழுந்து நிற்கும் மாடிக்கட்டிடம் அவரை எங்களுக்கு என்றும் நினைவு கூர வைக்கும்,
புதிதாக உள்ள கட்டிடத்துக்குக் கால்கோள் கொண்ட போதும் s96ìJff இருந்து வழிநடத்தினார். முன்னைய சங்கத்தின் தற்போதைய தலைவர் என்ற முறையில் அவரின் மறைவு எனக்குத் தனிப்பட்ட பேரிழப்பாகும். பிரச்சனைகள் எழும் போதெல்லாம் அவரின் வழிகாட்டலை நான் வேண்டி நிற்பேன். அவரது உறுதியும் , பாரபட்சமற்ற தெளிவும் கண்டு வியப்பேன். கட்டிடக் குழுவின் தலைவர் என்ற முறையில் கடினமான பொறுப்பைச் சுமந்து கடமைகளைச் செவ்வனே செய்தார். அவர் போற்றிய முன் கட்டிட அமைப்புக்கும், தற் போதைய கட்டிட அமைப்பிற்கும் அவரே கட்டிடக்குழு தலைவராகப் பணியாற்றினார். நேர்மை எங்களுக்குப் பலமாக அமைந்தது.

வீ. எம். தியாகராசா அவர்கள் ஒரு முழுமையான வாழ்வு கண்ட பெருந்தகை. கல்விமேம்பாடு, சொல்வளம், உத்தியோகப் பிரபலம், இவை ஒரு சேர அமைவது கடினம். திரு. தியாகராசாவிடம் இவை அமைந்த தோடு, சிறந்த இல்லறத்தான் ஒருவனுக்கு அமைய வேண்டிய மனையறம் கைவந்த மனைவியும் சற்புத்திரர்களும், புத்திரியும் அமைந்தது தெய்வசங்கற்பம்.
வையத்துள் வாழ்வாங்கு வாழ்ந்த நல் மனிதத் தன்மைகள் ஒரு சேரப் பெற்ற, நல்லறம் போற்றி வாழ்ந்த மாமனிதன் வீ. எம். தியாகராசா அவர்கள்.

A CLOSE FRIEND
Tuesday 6th June 1995 will be a memorable day in the lives of many people, as in mine, for on that day Vadivel Murugan Thiagarajah was called away from this mortal life.
Thiag and I were very close friends for nearly fifty years. We have shared together many moments of smiles, laughter joy disappointments and sadness. Since we met together and lived in the same Boarding house, when he was an Accountancy student we have maintained close link throughout our working life, until the final moments of his earthly existence. This was so, because he was always a friend in need. Our friendship was mutual and deep. He was a modest man who did not throw about his weight unduly. Conversations and fellowship with him were pleasant, and enriching. He was a man with a good sense of humour. In his working life he was very painstaking, understanding with a deep sense of responsibility. He was a self-less man,
We both joined the Colombo Tamil Sangam at its inception as members of the Executive Committee. He held the office of Treasurer and later President. Here too his unassuming nature and sincerity of purpose were of immense value in conducting and promoting the affairs of the Sangam. He was a truly public spirited man, who treated everyone with respect, irrespective of his community, class or religion.
We used to attend together, very many lectures at the Ramakrishna Hall. He was a man with a heart for religion and philosophy. He did not do these merely to enlarge his horizon of knowledge, but as a seeker after Truth. As head of his family he was deeply devoted to attending to the family's material and spiritual needs. His sons were all class mates & School mates of my sons at St. Thomas' College, Mt. Lavinia. As in the case of the parents the interplay of spiritual and cultural values on each other was a great blessing in their growing to be respected and successful men in society. Thiag was a model husband and father. His

integrity was beyond question at all times. Alas his qualities are rare in the contemporary society. Hence he will be missed sadly by all who moved in his company, for he was a noble soul.
His untimely death leaves a big void in the lives of his wife, children and relations. They are sure to pine for his help and guidance in the days to come. It is our fervent hope and prayer that God will endow them with guidance and courage in their hours of need. May God's abundant grace be with the soul of V.M. Thiagarajah.

வடிவேல் முருகன் அவர்கள் சிறுபராயத்தில் தந்தையை இழந்து சிறியதந்த்ையாரால் வளர்க்கப் பெற்று குடும்பத்தில் தந்தையாரைப் போலவே பொறுமை, பெருந்தன்மை ஆகிய சிறப்பியல்புடன் விளங்கினர். கர்.வ.குடும்பத்தோர் தியாகராஜா என்றே மதித்து நடந்தனர். தமது கடமையை சரிவரச் செய்து எல்லோருடைய அன்பையும் கவர்ந்தார் . பூரீ சரிவஞானப் பரிள்ளையார் ஆலயபரிபாலனத்தை திறம்பட நடாத்தி வந்தார். நாம் அவரின் அன்பிலும் ஆதரவிலும் கவலை இல்லாது இருந்தோம்

என்ற தெய்வப் புலவரின் குறளுக்கு இணங்க யாழ்ப்பாணத்தில் உள்ள சங்குவேலியில் தியாகராஜா தம்பதியினருக்கு 5-2-1931 அன்று திருவடிவேல் முருகன் பிறந்தார். அன்பானவ்ர். பண்பானவர். பிறப்பினல் ஒரு செல்வந்தராக இருந்தும் அமைதியான வாழ்ககை வாழ்ந்தார் "மனதிலுறுதி வேண்டும், வாக்கினிலே இனிமை வேண்டும் நினைவில் நல்லது வேண்டும்" என்று பாடிய பாரதியாரின் கவிதைக்கு அமைய உறுதி, இன்சொல் பேசுதல், நல்லதை நினைத்தல் என்பனவற்றை தம்மகத்தை கொண்டவர். தெய்வீக சிந்தனை உள்ளவர். துய்மை, உண்மை, நேர்மை, எளிமை, தாராளமனப்பான்மை, தன்னலமற்றசேவை என்பன இவரின் குணஇயல்புகளாகும். இதனுலன்ருே தான்கடமை ஆற்றிய நிறுவனங்களிலுள்ள அணைவரினதும் அன்பையும் நன்மதிப்பையும் பெற்றர்.
இலங்கையில் மட்டுமன்றி கடல் கடந்தநாடுகளில் இருந்து வரும் உற்ருர், உறவினர்கள் நண்பர்கள் அனைவர்க்கும் அவர்கள் வேண்டிய உதவிகளை மனநிறைவுடன் அன்புடன் செய்து வந்தமையாலன்றே இன்று எல்லோரும் ஒரு அன்பான தம்பியை, அண்ணனை, மாமாவை, பெரிஜயாவை, நண்பனை இழந்து கதிகலங்கின்றனர்
"தந்தை மகற்கு ஆற்றும் நன்றி அவையத்து முந்தி இருப்பச் செயல்"
என்ற வள்ளுவரின் குறளுக்கு இணங்க தமது நான்குசெல்வங்களும் பட்டம் பெற்று தொழில் புரிவதைக் கண்டு பூரிப்படைந்தார். தானதருமங்களிலும் , விருந்தோம்பலிலும் சிறந்து விளங்கிய இத்தம்பதியினர் பல உறவினர்களுக்கு தாமே முன்னின்று திருமணங்களே நடத்தியது மட்டுமன்றி, கன்னிகாதானம் செய்தும், கன்னிகாதானத்தை ஏற்றும்பலர் நல்வாழ்வு வாழவழி வகுத்தமையால் அன்னுரின் திடீர்மரணச் செய்தி அறிந்து அனைவரும் பேரதிர்ச்சியுற்றனர்.
அன்பின் உறைவிடமே பாசஒளிவிளக்கே எல்லோர்க்கும் உயர்வான வாழ்க்கையை அளித்து விட்டு நீங்கள் எங்களை விட்டுச் சென்றுவிட்டீர்கள். எங்கள் துயரம் ஆருது. நாங்கள் தரணியில் உள்ள மட்டும் நீங்காது உங்கள் நினைவு. சிறகிழந்த பறவைகளானுேம். துடுக்கு இழந்த படகுகளானுேம்.
