Manipay Hi in my An Alumnus
In 1928 my father returned to Ceylon on his long service leave from Malaysia. For some reason or the other he decided to retire from the service and stay back in Ceylon. My younger brother and I started our primary schooling at our home village of Chankanai. It was often discussed in our family about sending me to school in Jaffna for my secondary education as a residential student. But because of the sudden demise of my father this idea never materialised. I had to go to Manipay Hindu College, which was the closest and most convenient school. This I think, was one of the best things that happened to me. Many happy and eventful years of schooling were to follow among the finest teachers and school mates.
Manipay Hindu College was one of the leading school at that time. We were privileged to study in the school, where Pandit Mylvaganam who later became Swami Vipulananda, was a past Principal. At that time our school had already won the Jaffna district soccer championship for seven years, and athletic championship for five years all in succession. Many of our students represented the school at national level in athletic meets, and won awards and accolades. Among them were V. Thiyagarajah who won awards in polevault, Duraisingam in the prime events of 100 and 200 yards, A. Theivendram in mile race, S.T Thurairatnam in hurdles, and Sandow Velayuthapillai in the throwing events. N. Shanmugathasan who later became the General Secretary of the Communist Party (Peaking Wing) was also a student during this time. The school was at the pinnacle under the principalship of the late Mr. Veerasingam. Indeed it was also known as Veerasingam's school in some parts of Ceylon. Such was the impact he made in the administration of the school.

(Grade six) and continued up to my matriculation in 1938. We walked to school from Chankanai in groups, and we had many ways of communicating with our groups. A branch of leaves left on the roadside meant, "Proceed without waiting for me” Mr. Veerasingam affectionately called us " Adai Chankanai" Chankanai was home for many top class athletes. A Theivendram was famous for the mille race. V. Thiyagarajah was an excellent polevaulter. V. Selvathurai, V. K. Rajasundaram, A.Kanagaratnam (goal Keeper), and V.K Selvasundaram were all brilliant soccer players.
We all followed the same pattern of education in English with Tamil and Lagin as second languages. We went through the junior and senior Cambridge examinations. One of the remarkable teachers at that time was Mr.J.PNagalingam who

was the sports master. He was a strict disciplinarian. He made an enormous contribution to the development of sports and produced top class athletes like late Duraisingam, the all Ceylon 100 yards champion.JPN had a knack for spotting the talent and nurturing them to their fullest potential. On the first day at school itself JPN had a trial in 100 yards and high jump for me and I was found to be good enough. JPN requested me to stay for practice every day after school. I could not fulfil this request since I had to walk home for more than three miles after practice. So I had to give up active participation in sports. JPN also persuaded me to take up acting. I was given the character of Mantharai (LobSTGOU) - Kooni (), gos) in the Ramayana play for the inter house drama competition. Drama too was given a very important place at college and that led to the making of many renowned actors, directors, cinema stars, radio artists and announcers in the arts, media and entertainment sector.
Our class teacher taught most of the subjects. We had specialist teachers for certain subjects. Mr. C. Navaratnam taught us physics, he later succeeded Mr. Veerasingam as principal. Mr. S. Subramaniam taught English, he later became the principal of Victoria college. Mr. C. Subramaniam (Orator) taught English and Latin and he became the principal of Skandavarodaya College. It should be noted that orator was one of the prominent members of the Jaffna Youth Congress. Mr. Navaratnarajah taught Mathematics and Chemistry and he went on to become principal for Vasavilan Mathya Maha Vidyalaya and then to Balapitiya MMV in the south. Our teachers came to school by various modes of transport, some by rickshaws and some by bullock carts (Thirukal Vandil - $obiase) 6) God Lq6)) and some walked. It was normal to see bullocks and rickshaw pullers loitering in the school compound during school hours. We were taught Tamil by Pandithar Kanthaiya, an elderly and well respected person. He had a habit of calling every one by the name "Sivam” (56). LD touching his chest with his hand in reverence. One day one of the students in Pandithar's class, having seen the principal going on his daily rounds remarked " Sir, Periya Sivam veli veethi varukirar” (சேர் பெரிய சிவம் வெளிவீதி வருகிறார்) Later this became a standard way of telling that the principal was doing his rounds.
Among my classmates were Bagirathan who was also known as B.R. Devarajan. He moved to Colombo and later joined the UN. Velummylum entered the Medical College, became a doctor and served in Jaffna later. V.N.Balasubramaniyam

and K.S. Nadarajah both joined the Radio Ceylon and held high positions. There were days when their voices travelled the airways of Ceylon and India. VNB was a journalist and a good Carnatic vocalist. He later joined the Eelanadu G-typIBTG) press and worked as a journalist writing columns and music reviews. Sivagnanam and Kangesu were very remarkable people whom we will always fondly remember. They were great fans of the Nathaswaram (big,6b6 JLb) music and never missed any Kovil Thiruvila Cassisigo Sb6ipm) . The next day at school during the lunch hour both of them would render a good Thavil Kacheri (566) is3(Sf) and a Mela Chama (GLd6MTë GELDTD . There were two specially selected desks reserved for them as their Thavil (56igo). They used bare hands to produce most intricate sounds and rhythms. Sivagnanam was known as the "Inuvil Palani"(ggj6igo up6) and Kankesu as “ Kamachisundaram” (assiLDIT& $13,551JLb) . the two legendary Thavil Viduvans (5656) 6i556) TGötasoft) at that time.The whole class and even others joined and watched these Kacheries (abės (CaFÓD .
Sport was an integral part of school activities. We had a very good soccer team. Most of the soccer players played bare footed. JPN was a renowned and well- respected soccer referee too. The whole community was behind our soccer team. They followed the team to every venue they played. Matches were played at the home and away grounds, and later on they were moved to common venue namely Jaffna Schools Sports Association(JSSA) grounds. We rode double on bicycle to soccer matches and were often apprehended by the village Headman, Vithanaiyar (6i5ITGOGOTuri) who often threatened to charge us, but we normally escaped after listening to his long
lecture.
I remember a particular annual Jaffna Inter Collegiate Athletic meet in which we missed the championship due an unfortunate incident. The overall championsship depended on the outcome of the junior relay race. I happened to be the first runner. Unfortunately our third runner slipped and fell when changing baton. Regardless of this Arthur Jayaratnam, the junior champion in that meet, ran the last lap and finished first. But to our disappointment we were disqualified and this cost us the relay race as well as the overall championship by couple of points, despite the fact that both the junior and senior champions, Arthur and Duraisingam were from our team. My hard earned achievement in sport too went unrewarded.
We had to walk to one of the two places near Velakkai Pillaiyar (G6) Goi6O)56frgO)6 Turf) temple for our lunch. Those were the places where we could have rice meals. One was owned by the lyer (guj) and the other by the Saivam (60) 56) jLib). There used to be about 15 people at each place. I remember even some of our teachers joined us

there. We sat crossed legged on mats and enjoyed a very good vegetarian meal served on banana leaves which cost only 12 cents for juniors and 15 cents for adults. Every Friday we had a special assembly and prayer. The principal used to give a short talk on this day. Some times he would choose a proverb in English or Tamil and would talk about that for a while. Mini competitions were held to test our knowledge of various subjects. I fondly remember winning a prize for translating an English proverb into Tamil. Mr Veerasingam was very creative in running the school. Very often he introduced novel ideas in the school activities.
I vividly remember the July 4th celebration of the silver jubilee year. As still is the tradition, the penultimate event was the one-mile race and you have to run eight laps around playground. When the first batch of four front - runners breasted the finish line all those who came far behind gave up except one runner who was just behind the winner. He continued on as the sole runner to complete his remaining last lap, cheered and applauded by the crowd. This fete was highly taken up by the Principal and he promptly organised a special award for continuing and completing the event. July 4th brings life and excitement to the College and the surroundings. We could feel waves offestivity and a friendly rivalry among the students and teachers. Many past students and parents travel from far away just to be around to soak up this feeling. Old memories come to light. We begin to feel a sense of belonging as well as a sense of ownership of the school. It is very gratifying to note that we too are trying to recreate this atmosphere in far away lands in celebrating this annual event. Our school has changed in many ways since I left, but the spirit and the uniqueness still lingers on. This day brings back the pride of belonging to this great school and the memories of the glorious past. Let us wish that our Alma mater will re-emerge from the ravages of the unfortunate war and continue to serve the community.
