Reverend Swamiji, Hon’ble Chief Guest, Chairman, President and members of the Board of Management, Welfare Society, Distinguished Guests and Friends.
We are privileged to have in our midst today as Chief Guest, Hon’ble Justice Palakidnar and Mrs. Palakidnar.
Mr. Palakidnar occupies a position of eminence in this country, as President of the Court of Appeal. He has been a Judicial Officer for more than 25 years and earned a good name for himself in the legal profession. We are aware that as a Judge, he has performed his duties without fear, favour or in expectation of any reward.
His secret of Success as a good judge is that he is deeply religious. He is a devout Hindu and observed the tenets of Hindu Dharma. His service in the furtherance of Hinduism, Hindu Culture and Arts is well known. He was responsible for establishing the Saiva Maha Sabai when he was a District Judge of Puttalam.
Mrs. Lakshmidevi Palakidnar is also equally known among the Tamil Ladies as a Pioneer Carnatic Musician.
We extend to them a hearty welcome and express our grateful thanks for accepting our invitation and finding the time to grace this occasion with their presence.
We are also glad to extend a hearty welcome to Swamiji, Chairman, other distinguished Guests, Board of Management and Well WisherS.

Hon’ble Chief Guests and FriendS !
You may be aware of the services rendered by our School to Hindu Education in this country. Our School was founded in 1932 and during these 60 years, it has grown to a leading educational institute for Tamil speaking students in Colombo.
The main objective of the Founders of this institution was to impart an education in a Hindu environment and Culture to Hindu students. It is not an exaggeration, if I say, that our school has always lived up to the expectations of our Founders.
On this Occasion, We remember with gratitude the illustrious services of the Founders, members of the Board of Management in the past and present, the Principals and the staff who contributed So much in the Course of Hindu Education and Culture through this institution which We are all proud of, today.
The College Prize Day function is an important occasion for the students and staff alike. To the Staff, this is an Occasion. when they feel proud of the achievements of their students. To the students, this is an occasion, where they feel proud of their achievements when they receive a prize before a distinguished audience.
However, a memorable function of this nature has been eluding us for a number of years. I am happy that after 10 long years, a College Prize Day function takes place today and I thank the staff, well Wishers and others Who have made this function a SuCCeSS.
The present educational system is beset with many problems. It may help the learners to earn a livelihood. But preparing the children for earning a livelihood

should not be the only aim of education. What do We See On the other hand? There is marked deterioration in human behaviour and human character. Education has failed to curb this situation today. It has become very necessary to intergrate religious, cultural and human values into the curriculum in Schools. An introduction of value-oriented education is the only salvation for the present ills of Society.

Achievement in Sports
Despite the severe handicaps such as

lack of playground facilities our students have done well in sports.
The annual Inter-House SportsMeet for Primary students was held in February 1991 at the Rudra Park Playground with Mrs. Kanagasabai, the then Manageress of the School as the Chief Guest.
The Annual Inter-House Sports Meet for the post-primary students was held at St. Peter's College Grounds in April with Mr. George Mendis, Chairman of Education Service Committee as the Chief Guest. The performance of our students was highly commended by the Chief Guest.
The Inter-House Annual Tournaments for Badminton, Table Tennis and Throw Ball were conducted in January this year. Students are also trained in swimming at the St. Peter's College Pool. We are hopeful that they would achieve satisfactory standards before the Inter-House Swimming Competition, we expect to work out this year.
Activities of Students ASSociation
The English Literary Association conducted varied Programmes of Recitation, Dictation, Spelling Bee, Quiz and Singing. We could not hold the Annual English Day Programme last year, since the students Were actively engaged instaging a Drama titled "The Lady Windermere's Fan."
Students of Our School were Selected to participate in the Final Drama Competition.
Language skills Competitions were held and Certificates of Merit were awarded to the winners. A teacher qualified at Wendy Whatmore Academy, has been appointed to teach Elocution for students of all cla

Our students secured the first and Second places in the Oratorical Contest conducted by the Vivekananda Society.
The Tamil Literary Association organiZed various competitions in Drama, Speech, Essay Writing and Mono Acting. Our students participated and won many awards in the Tamil Day Celebrations conducted by the Ministry of Education. Our Students participated in the InterSchool Debate Competitions conducted by D.S. Senanayake Maha Vidyalaya, St. Thomas College and lsipathana Maha Vidyalaya. They also participated in the SAARC Cultural Function held at Hindu College.
Kalaivizha was held last year after a lapse of six years. Hon’ble P. Devarajah, Minister for Hindu Affairs Who Was the Chief Guest at the Kalaivizha, commended highly the skills of our students. "Kannaki" one of the dramas staged at the Kalaivizha was broadcast by the S.L.B.C. The Rupavahini Corporation tele-cast some of the songs and dance programmes. Primary School children participated in the Vanna Cholai Programme conducted by the Rupavahini Corporation.
Dramatic Society
The Dramatic Society had a very successful year in 1991. They staged many plays and participated in Inter-School Drama Competitions. One of our students, Miss Vahini Karunarakaran was judged the Best Actress in the Inter School Drama Competition organized by D.S. Senamayake Maha Vidyalaya.
Religious Association
The Religious Association conducted special Poojas during the Navarathiri, Si

Varathiriand Kanda Sashdi Festivals: and Commemorated all other festivals. Various competitions were held to mark these functions. Competitions in "Garland Making" "Kolam" discourses by eminent Religious Persons, and "Thirukural Mananam" were highlights of the Religious Activities during the last year. The participation and guidance by Swami Athmanandaji in the activities of the Religious Association is greatly acknowledged.
Our students had actively participated in the various competitions and Programmes, organized by the Rupavahini Corporation and other schools. The five participants at the "Panlsai" Competition won prizes organized by the Saiva Munetra Sangam. Students also participated in the Saiva Neri Weekly programmes conducted by the S.L.B.C.
The Science Association
The Science ASSOciation meets Once a month. The meeting takes place in the form of "Do you know Contests" reading articles on Science & Scientific Discoveries and Advancement. The ASSOciation presented a team to participate at the Science Contest organised by the Institute of Chemistry.
Girl Guides Association
Our Girl Guides participated at the "Thanks Giving Day” programme held at the Girl Guides Headquarters. An Enrolment ceremony was also held, followed by a social function during the 3rd Term.
Elocution Classes
A total of 60 students follow the Elocution Classes now. This number is expected to increase in future. Classes are Conducted from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. once a week. We expect that the students would have reached satisfactory standards to sit

for an exam conducted by the Wendy Whatmore Academy in March this year.
Our Needs
The most important of our needs today is the Playground facilities for our students.
You will agree with me that the sports field is as important as the classroom to mould the character of the students. Such is the importance given to sports in the extra Curricular activities of the School.
Considerable difficulty is encountered in booking the playground for the students outside the school. Not only the available playgrounds are at a fair distance from the School, but worse, the environment around the playing field is not conducive to the students.
Therefore, the need for a school playground should receive priority both with the Management and Parents.
We also need funds to pay the salaries of increasing number of our tutorial staff. Only fifteen, out of the forty five teachers salaries are paid by the Dept. of Education. The Board of Management have to find the financial resources to pay the Salaries of other members of the Staff.

OurS is the only privately managed Hindu Educational institution in Colombo today, which has opened its doors, to accommodate the displaced students from the North and East of Sri Lanka. So much SO, even the Christian National Council was full of praise for our institution and Volunteered to help us financially.
Before I conclude this report, it is my pleasant duty to thank the members of the Board of Management for the active cooperation and guidance given to me in performing my duties. The new building in which you are today in this premises is the fruit of their labour. The Tamil Community will be ever grateful to them for the rapid advancement, the school has seen in the recent past.

விழுமியக் கல்வி ஏன்?
நாம் வாழுகின்ற யுகம் விஞ்ஞான, தொழில்நுட்ப அபிவிருத்தி அதி தீவிர வளர்ச்சி கண்டுள்ள காலப்பகுதி. இவற்றால் மக்களின் வாழ்க்கை வசதிகள், நாகரிக ஆடம் பரங்கள் என்பன செழித்து ஓங்குகின்றன. எனினும் மக்கள் வாழ்க்கையில் அமைதி, மகிழ்ச்சி, சாந்தி, சமாதானம் என்பவை காணப்படுதல் மிக அரிதாகவே உள்ளது. எத் துணைச் செல்வங்களிருப்பினும், மன அமைதி மக்களிடையே இல்லையாயின், செல்வங்களினால் பயனில்லை. மனித வாழ்க்கை முன்னேற்றம் ஆனது உலகியல் தேவைகளைப் பூர்த்தி செய்தல், ஆத்மீகத் தேவைகளை நிறைவு செய்தல் ஆகிய இரண் டின் அடிப்படைகளிலுமே மதிப்பீடு செய் யப்படுதல் வேண்டும். இரண்டிலும் சமமான வளர்ச்சி, நடுநிலைமை ஏற்படும் போது தான் மனித வாழ்க்கையில் முன்னேற்றம் காணமுடியும். மனித குலம் இன்று எதிர் நோக்கும் பிரச்சனை விஞ்ஞானதொழில்நுட் பத்துறைகளின் ஈடு இணையற்ற வளர்ச்சியும் மனிதப் பண்புகள், விழுமியங்கள் உள்ளிட்ட மனிதத்துவம் அவற்றிற்கினையாக வளரா மையுமேயாகும். உலகியல் முன்னேற்றத்து டன், மனிதத்துவ வளர்ச்சியும் இணைந்து ஏற் படும் போதுதான், மனித குலம் மகிழ்ச்சியுட னும், அமைதியுடனும் வாழ வழிபிறக்கின் (Dgil.

எனவே, வளரும் குழந்தைகளைச்சிறுபிரா யத்திலிருந்தே பண்படுத்திப், பக்குவமாக வளர்க்க வேண்டிய பொறுப்பு எமக்கு ஏற் பட்டுள்ளது. இளமையிற் கல்வி சிலையில் எழுத்து; ஆத்மீகம், உலகியல் வாழ்க்கை யைச் செம்மைப்படுத்துகிறது.
கல்வி கற்போர் தொகை இன்று அதிகரித்து வருகின்றது. குழந்தைகள் பல்வேறு சமூக பண்பாட்டு, பொருளாதாரச் சூழல்கள், பின் னணிகள் ஆகியவற்றிலிருந்து பாடசாலைக்கு கற்க வருகின்றனர். இதனால், தாம் வாழு கின்ற சூழல்களிலிருந்து இக் குழந்தைகள் பெற்றுக்கொள்கின்ற மனிதப் பண்புகள், சமூக விழுமியங்கள், சமூக சட்டதிட்டங்கள்,

வாழ்க்கை முறைகள், நீதி நியாயங்கள், ஒழுக் கங்கள் தொடர்பான அறிவு, அனுபவங்கள் என்பன குழந்தைகளிடம் வேறுபட்ட நிலை மைகளிலேயே காணப்படும். பெரும்பா லான குழந்தைகள் இன்று இத்தகைய நல் லொழுக்கப் பண்புகளைக் குடும்பத்திலி ருந்தோ, கோயில்கள் போன்ற சமய நிறுவ னங்களிலிருந்தோ, மற்றும் சமூகத்திலி ருந்தோ பெற்றுக் கொள்கின்ற வாய்ப்புகள் அற்றவர்களாகவே உள்ளனர். குழந்தைகளை நல்லொழுக்கப் பாதையில் வழிநடத்த, சமு தாயத்தினருக்கு நேரம் இல்லை; துணிவும் இல்லை; அறிவு ஆற்றல்களும் வற்றிய நிலை யில் உள்ளமை என்பதையே காணக்கூடிய தாக உள்ளது. இந்த நிலையில் பாடசாலை கள்தான், குழந்தைகளின் வாழ்க்கைப் பின்ன ணியை அறிந்து அவர்களின் தேவைகளை இனங்கண்டு, உரிய முறையில் அவர்களை நல்லவர்களாக வளர்த்து உதவ வேண்டும்.
இன்று கல்வியறிவு பெற்றவர்கள் தொகை, முன்னைய காலங்களில் இருந்த தைப் பார்க்கப் பன்மடங்கு அதிகரித்துள் ளது. அவ்வாறிருந்தும், ஒழுக்கச் சீர்கேடுகள், நெருக்கடிகள், வன்செயல்கள், ஊழல்கள் என்பன மலிந்து காணப்படுகின்றனவே என் பதை எண்ணும்போதே கவலையும், ஆச்சரிய மும் ஏற்படுகின்றன. எல்லாத் துறைகளிலும் ஒழுக்கப் பண்புகள், மனித விழுமியங்கள் என்பன மறைந்து கொண்டே செல்கின்றன. பொது வாழ்க்கையிலும் சரி, தனிப்பட்ட வாழ்க்கையிலும் சரி, ஒழுக்க குறைபாடுகள் தெளிவாகத் தென்படுகின்றன. பின்வருவன இதற்குச் சான்றாக அமைகின்றன.
(1) குடும்பங்களில், உறுப்பினர்களுக்கி டையே பிணைப்புகள் குறைந்து, பிணக்குகள் மேலோங்கிக் காணப்ப டுகின்றன. பிள்ளைகளின் சமூக விரோத மற்றும் வன்செயல் போக்கு களைப் பெற்றோர்கள் திருத்த முடி யாமல் திண்டாடுகிறார்கள். பாடசா லைகள், விதிகள், விளையாட்டு மைதானங்கள், பொழுது போக்கு நிலையங்கள், பொது இடங்கள் ஆகி

யவற்றில் ஒழுங்கு, கட்டுப்பாடுகள் பேணமுடியாத நிலை. துர்நடத்தை கள், வன்செயல்கள் காரணமாகப் பல்வேறு இடையூறுகள் ஏற்படுகின் றன.
வேலைத்தளங்களில், பணியாளர்க ளிடையே கடமையுணர்வு குன்றி வருகின்றது. குறைந்த வேலையைச் செய்து கூடிய வேதனம் பெறுவதே பிரதான நோக்கம். பொதுச் சொத்துக் கள் சரியாகப் பேணப்படுவதோபரா மரிக்கப்படுவதோ இல்லை. விளை யாட்டுத்துறையில், முறையற்ற வழி யிலேனும் வெல்வதே நோக்கமாக உள்ளது. வியாபாரத்தில், அறநெ றிக்கு இடமில்லை; இலாபம் சம்பா தத்திலேயே கண்ணும் கருத்தும்; கலப்படம் என்பது சர்வசாதாரணமா கிவிட்டது. பொதுப்பணி மன்றங்க ளும் போட்டி, பொறாமை, சுயநலம் பேணல் ஆகியவற்றிலிருந்து விடு தலை பெற்றதாக இல்லை.
சுயநலம் யாவற்றிலும் மேலாண்மை செலுத்துகின்றது. பணம் முக்கியமே தவிர, பண்புஅல்ல. ஏனையோருக்கு எந்த விதத்திலும் இடைஞ்சலாக இருப்பதிலேயே இன்பம் காணப்ப டுகிறது. நலிந்தோர், வலது குறைந் தோர், முதியோர், பெரியோர் ஆகி யோருக்கு உதவ வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணம் சிறிதும் இல்லை.
சட்டம் பொது ஒழுங்கு, நீதி ஆகிய வற்றை மீறுவதே இயல்பான செய லாகிவிட்டது. தவறு செய்த பின்னர் நியாயப்படுத்தும் ஆற்றல் நிறைய உண்டு. சுற்றாடல் பாதுகாக்கப்பட வேண்டும் என்ற உணர்வே இல்லை. சுத்தம் பேணப்படுதல் என்பது மறந் துவிட்ட காரியமாகி விட்டது.
மனித உயிர் பெறுமானம் இழந்து விட்டது போல் தோன்றுகின்றது. தகாத நடத்தைகளாலும், போதைப்

பொருட்களாலும் மனித வாழ்க்கைக் காலம் குறுக்கப்படுகிறது. வாழ்க் கைக் குறிக்கோள்கள், நோக்கங்கள் என்று இன்றைய சந்ததியினரிடப் காண்பது மிக அரிது. கண்டதே காட்சி கொண்டதே கோலம், அஞ்சு வதற்கு அஞ்சாமை என்ற நிலை காணப்படுகிறது. இவற்றினால், மாணவர்களின் நாட்டம் கல்வியிற் செல்லாமை, நல்ல நூல்களை வாசித் தல், நல்ல நண்பர்களுடன் சேர்தல், நல்ல சிந்தனைகள் செயல்களில் ஈடு படல் என்ற நற்கருமங்களில் நாட்ட மின்மை ஏற்படுகின்றன. தன்னம்பிக் கையின்மை, விரக்தி, வீணவா என்ப வற்றினால் போதைப் பொருட்களை யும் விஷமருந்துகளையும், தற்கொ லைகளையும் தஞ்சமடைந்து அமை திபெறவிழைகின்றனர்.
மேலே குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளவையாவும் கற்ற வர்கள் சமுதாயத்திலேயே கூடுதலாகக் காணப்படுகின்றன. இத்தகைய கவலைக்கு ரிய நிலைமைகளுக்குக் காரணம் என்ன என் பது ஆராயப்படவேண்டியது. உண்மையில் கல்வியில் மனித விழுமியங்களுக்கு இடம ளிக்காமையும்; சமூகத்தில் பெரியோர்களும், வளர்ந்தவர்களும், மூத்தோர்களும் தமது செல்வாக்கினை இளஞ்சந்ததியினர் மீது பதிக்கத் தவறியமையுமே காரணமாகின்றன. பெளதிகத் தேவைகளுடன், ஆத்மீகத் தேவை களும் பூர்த்தி செய்யப்பட வேண்டும் என் பதை உணரத் தவறியமையால் வாழ்க்கைக் குறிக்கோள்களில் ஆத்மீகம் விடுபட்டு விட் டது. இதுவே இன்றைய கவலைக்குரிய நிலைக்குக் காரணம்.
விழுமியக் கல்வி, சரியான பாதையினின் றும் விலகிச் செல்லுகின்ற மனித சமுதாயத் தினை மீளவும் சரியான பாதைக்குக் கொண்டு வந்து வழிப்படுத்துதலை நோக்க மாகக் கொண்டுள்ளது.
தற்பொழுது நமது சமுதாயத்திலே புகுந்து விட்ட கலாச்சார பண்பாட்டு முரண்பாடு கள்; சீர்கேடுகள், சீரழிவுகள் ஆகியவற்றிலி ருந்து சமுதாயம் காப்பாற்றப்படவேண்டும்.

மேல்நாட்டுக் கல்வி முறை, மேல் நாட்டு வாழ்க்கை முறை, மேல்நாட்டு கலாச்சாரம் என்பனநம்மிடத்துக் கலந்து விட்டமையினா லும்; அவையே முற்போக்கானவை என்ற எண்ணம் வேரூன்றி விட்டமையினாலும்; அண்மைக் காலங்களில் நம்மவர் பலர் வெளி நாட்டு வாழ்க்கை, வெளிநாட்டுத் தொடர்பு களை மேற்கொண்டு வருவதாலும் கலாச்சா ரப் பிறழ்வுகள் தவிர்க்க முடியாதனவாகிவிட் டன. இதனால் காலம் காலமாக நம்மக்களி டையே இருந்து வந்து, அவர்களை வாழ் வித்து வந்த மனிதப்பண்புகள், மனித விழுமி யங்கள், மனித மேம்பாடுகள் என்பன கொஞ் சம் கொஞ்சமாக மறக்கப்பட்டு வருகின்றன. இவை தனித்துவமும், பெறுமதியும் வாய்ந் தவை. கால, தேச, வர்த்தமானங்களைக் கடந் தவை; அருமையும் பெருமையும் கொண் டவை. எனவே அவை நம் எதிர்காலச்சந்ததி யினருக்கு வழங்கப்படவேண்டியவை. அத னாலும் விழுமியக் கல்வியின் தேவை இன்று உணரப்படுகிறது.
கல்வியின் குறிக்கோள், மாணவர்களில் அறிவு, திறன், நன்மனப்பாங்கு என்பவற்றை விருத்தி செய்தல் என்று கூறப்படுகிறது. எல்லா ஆசிரியர்களுக்கும் இது மனப்பாடம். நடைமுறையில் ஏட்டுச் சுரைக்காய் ஆகவே இது உள்ளது. ஒரு பேச்சுக்கே இவ்வாறு கூறப்பட்டதோ என்றும் எண்ணத் தோன்றுகி றது. கற்பித்தலில் இருந்து பரீட்சை ஈறாக கல் வியின் அறிவுசார் நோக்கமே நிறைவேற்றப் படுகிறது. தாம் ஆசிரியீரிடத்திலிருந்தும், நூல்களிலிருந்தும் பெற்றுக்கொண்ட விடயக் குறிப்புக்களை மனனம் செய்து, நினைவில் நிறுத்தி, பரீட்சையின் போது விடைகளாகத் தந்து சான்றிதழ் பெறும் பாக்கியத்தையும், வல்லமையும் பெற்றவர்கள் எவரோ அவர் களே கற்றவர்கள் எனவும், அறிவாளிகள், புத்தி ஜீவிகள் எனவும் கருதப்பட்டு வாழ்க் கையில் வெற்றி பெற்றவர்களாகவும் கணிக் கப்படுகிறார்கள். ஆனால் கல்வியின் ஏனைய குறிக்கோள்களான உளஇயக்க விருத்தி, மன எழுச்சிச்சமநிலையாக்க விருத்தி, விழுமியங் களை விருத்தி செய்தல், நன்னடத்தைப் பண்பு விருத்தி என்பன அடையப்பட்டுள்ள னவா? என்பது கேள்விக்குறியாகவே உள் ளது. பெரும்பாலும் இவ்விருத்திகள் நிகழ்வ

தற்குரிய நடவடிக்கைகள் பாடசாலைகளில் குறைவாகவே உள்ளன. பாடசாலைக் கலைத்திட்டம் வகுப்புகளில் நடைமுறைப்ப டுத்தப்படும்போது, மன எழுச்சிசார் ஆட்சிக் குள் வரும் மனப்பண்பு விருத்தி, விழுமியங் கள் என்பனவற்றிற்குரிய கற்றல் அனுபவங் கள் வழங்கப்படாது புறக்கணிக்கப்பட்டே வருகின்றன. இப் புறக்கணிப்பு பாரதூரமான பாதக விளைவுகளை ஏற்படுத்துகின்றது என் பது உணரப்படவேண்டும். விழுமியக் கல்வி மூலம் இக் குறைபாட்டினை நிவர்த்தி செய்ய வேண்டும்.
தற்காலக் கல்விமுறையில் பரீட்சைகளும்; அவை வழங்கும் சான்றிதழ்கள், டிப்ளோமா, பட்டங்கள் என்பனவும் முக்கிய இடத்தை வகிக்கின்றன. அவற்றின் அடிப்படையி லேயே பதவிகள், உத்தியோகங்கள், என்பன வழங்கப்படுகின்றன. மனிதர்களின் சமூக அந்தஸ்து, கெளரவம், மதிப்பு என்பன அவர் கள் வகிக்கும் பதவிகள், ஈட்டும் பணம், கொண்டுள்ள செல்வாக்கு ஆகியவற்றின் அடிப்படையிலேயே கணிக்கப்படுகின்றன. மனிதர்களின் பெறுமானம் மதிப்பிடப்படும் போது அவர்களின் குணநலன், ஒழுக்கம், நன்னடத்தை, பண்பாட்டு, விழுமியங்கள், அகஎழில் என்பன புறக்கணிக்கப்பட்டு வரு கின்றன.
தமிழ்மரபு, கல்வியின் குறிக்கோள் மனிதர் களைச் சான்றோர்களாக்குதல் என்கின்றது. சான்றோர்கள் மனம், சொல், செயலினால் தூய்மையுடையவர்கள். அவர்களே பண்பு டையவர், ஒழுக்கசீலர், நன்நெறியாளர், ' பண்புடையோர் பட்டுண்டு உலகம்’ என்கி றார் வள்ளுவர். அவர்களே கல்விமான்கள், அவர்கள் கற்றபடி ஒழுகுபவர்கள். 'வாழ்க் கைக்கு உறுதுணை தூயநற்கல்வியே" என்கி றார், திருமூலர். இத்தகைய தூயநற்கல் வியை, 'கற்க மறுப்பவர்கள் வாழ மறுக்கி றார்’ என்கிறார் பகவான் இராமகிருஷ்ணபர மஹம்சர். "கல்விக்குப் பயன் அறிவு; அறி வுக்குப் பயன் ஒழுக்கம்’ என்கிறார் நாவலர் பெருமான். இவற்றையெல்லாம் ஒட்டு மொத்தமாகப் பார்க்கும் போது மனிதப்பண் புகள், நல்லொழுக்கம், விழுமியங்கள், சால் புகள் ஆகியவற்றைத் தருகின்ற கல்வியைத் தான் நம் முன்னோர் கல்வியென்று அங்கீக ரித்தமை புலனாகின்றது. மேல்நாட்டுக் கல் விமுறை புகுந்ததும்; கல்வியின் நோக்கம், கல்விப் பொருள், கல்விப் பயன் என்பன வேறு விதத்தில் அமைந்துவிட்டன. இன்று வரை அதே கல்வி முறை ஏதோ வகையில் தொடருகிறது. மக்களின் உலகியல் தேவை கள், ஆசைகள், எதிர்பார்ப்புகள் ஆகியவற்றி னைப்பூர்த்தி செய்வது; அவற்றை எவ்வழியி லேனும் அடையவைப்பது என்பவைதான் கல்வியின் பிரதான அம்சம். வழி எவ்வாறு அமையவேண்டுமென்பதல்ல முக்கியம்; பயனை எப்படியும் அடைய வேண்டும் என் பதே முக்கியம் ஆகின்றது. இதன் விளை வாக, கல்வியில் விழுமியங்கள் பெறும் இடம் அநேகமாக நிராகரிக்கப்பட்ட நிலைக் குத்தள்ளப்பட்டு விடுகிறது. பாடசாலையில் வழங்கப்படுகின்ற முறைசார்ந்த கல்வியைத் தான் கல்வியென்று நமது இளஞ்சந்ததியினர் எண்ணுகின்றனர். பாடங்களுக்குப்புறம்பாக நல்ல நூல்களை வாசிக்கும் பழக்கத்தையோ, நல்லோர் வழங்கும் நல்லுரைகளைக்கேட் கும் வழக்கத்தையோ மாணவர்கடைப்பிடிப் பதாகத் தோன்றவில்லை. மற்றும் திரைப்ப டங்கள், தொலைக்காட்சி, வானொலி, செய் தித்தாள்கள், சஞ்சிகைகள் என்பன இளம் சந் ததியினருக்கு நல்வழி காட்டுவனவாகவோ, நன்மை செய்பவையாகவோ தோன்ற வில்லை. இந்நிலையில் இளைஞர்களை நல் வழிப்படுத்த விழுமியக் கல்வியின் உத வியை நாடவேண்டியதே சிறந்த வழியாகும்.
எமது கல்விமுறைமை பின்வரும் கருத்துக் களை அநுசரித்து மறுபரிசீலனை செய்யப்ப டும்போது தற்போதைய கல்விக் குழப்பங் கள் நீங்கப்பெறலாம் என உணரப்படுகிறது.
1. கல்விமுறைமையானது பொருளா தார விருத்தி, சமூகநீதி, தன்னிறைவு,

வேலை வாய்ப்புக்கள், விஞ்ஞான தொழில் நுட்ப அபிவிருத்தி, சமூகந லன் ஆகியவற்றை நோக்காக கொண் டிருத்தலுடன் மானுட ஒழுக்கப் பண் புகள், விழுமியங்கள், நன்மனப் பாங்கு, நற்செயல்கள், நன்னடத்தை கள் உள்ளிட்டநல்லொழுக்கப் பயிற்சி களையும் இளம் சந்ததியினர் பெற்றுக் கொள்ள வாய்ப்பு நல்கக்கூடிய முறை யில் அமையவேண்டும்.
நமது சுதந்திரநாட்டின் குறிக்கோள் கள், அபிவிருத்தி, ஒருமைப்பாடு, சமாதானம் என்பன அடையப்பட வேண்டுமாகில், சத்தியம், அன்பு, சாந்தி, நன்னடத்தை, அகிம்சையாகிய ஐந்து மனித விழுமியங்கள் அல்லது மேம்பாடுகளையும் கல்வியின் ஊடா கவும், வேறுவழிமுறைகளாலும் எமது இளஞ்சிறார்கள் கற்றுக் கொள் ளவும், கற்றபடி ஒழுகவும் வழி செய்ய வேண்டும். மனிதர்களின் விழுமிய நிலை உயர்வடையாதவரை எப்பிரச் சினைகளும் தீர்க்கப்படமுடியாது.
ஆரம்ப வகுப்புக்களிலிருந்தே நன்கு திட்டமிட்டு கற்பிக்கப்படும் பல் வேறு பாடங்களினூடாகவும்; பாட சாலை இணைப்பாடவிதான, புறப்பா டவிதான நிகழ்ச்சிகளின் ஊடாகவும் விழுமியம் சார்ந்த கல்வியை மாண வர்களுக்கு அளிக்க வேண்டும்.

கலைத்திட்டம்; பாடநூல்கள், மதிப்பீ டுகள், மேலதிக வாசிப்பு நூல்கள், பாடசாலை நிகழ்ச்சிகள் என்பன பொருத்தமாக அமைக்கப்படுதல் வேண்டும்.
4. பாடசாலையில் கலைத்திட்டத்தை நடைமுறைப்படுத்துபவர்களும், மாணவர்கள் நேரடி அனுபவங்க ளைப் பெற்றுக்கொள்ள வழி செய்ப வர்களும் ஆசிரியர்களே. விழுமியக் கல்வியைப் பாடசாலையில் அமுல்ப டுத்துவதில் வெற்றிகாண்பது என்பது ஆசிரியர்களின் முயற்சிகளிலே தங்கி யுள்ளது. முயற்சி திருவினையாக்கும் விழுமியங்களைக் கல்வி முறைமையு டன் இணைப்பதன் மூலம் பிள்ளைக ளின் ஆளுமையில் முழுமையான விருத்தி ஏற்படச் செய்வதே நோக்கம். இன்றைய பிள்ளிைகள் நாளைய தினத் தில் வளர்ந்தவர்களாக எத்தன்மைகளு டன் திகழ்வார்கள் என்பது ஆசிரியர் கள் இன்றைய நாட்களில், அப் பிள் ளைகளுக்கு நல்கும் கல்வியின் பெறு பேறாகவே அமையப்போகிறது.
எனவே ஆசிரியர்கள் எவ்வாறு தமது பொறுப்புக்களையும், கடமைகளையும் நிறைவேற்றுகிறார்கள் என்பதிலேயே வருங் கால உலகத்தின் வாழ்வும், தாழ்வும் தங்கி யுள்ளது.

தேசிய அடிப்படையில் தொழில்ரீதியான பல சேவைகள் அரசாங்கத்தின் கீழ் இயங்கி வருவது யாவரும் அறிந்ததே. இவைகளில் இலங்கை நிர்வாக சேவை, பொறியியலாளர் சேவை, விவசாய சேவை, கல்விச் சேவை என்பன போன்று இலங்கையின் திட்டமிடல் சேவையும் அரசுத்துறையில் சிறப்பாக இயங்கி வரும் ஒரு சேவையாகும். இலங்கை யின் திட்டமிடல் சேவை அரசாங்க அங்கீகா ரம் பெற்று வர்த்தமானி அறிவித்தலுடன் 1985ம் ஆண்டு தொழில்ரீதியானதோர் சேவை யாகப் பிரகடனப்படுத்தப்பட்டாலும் அதன் சேவைக்கால அங்கத்தவர்கள் பலரும் நாட் டின் சுதந்திரத்தையடுத்து தயாரிக்கப்பட்ட பல நீண்டகால குறுகியகால அபிவிருத்தித் திட்ட வாக்கங்கள் பலவற்றிலும் பங்குபற் றிய பெரும் அறிஞர்கள் பலரையும் உள்ளடக் கியதாயிருந்தது.
திட்டமிடல் சேவையின் மிகக்கூடிய அங் கத்தவர்களை உள்ளடக்கிய பிரதான இடம் பெற்ற அமைச்சு பல்வேறு கால கட்டங்க ளில் பல்வேறு பெயர்களுடன் அழைக்கப் பட்டாலும் என்றுமே நாட்டின் அரசியல் நிர் வாகத் தலைவரின் பொறுப்பிலேயே விடப் பட்டது. பல பிரதமர்களின் கீழும் இரண்டு ஜனதிபதிகளின் கீழும் கடமையாற்றும் திட் டமிடற் சேவையாளர்கள் அரசாங்கத்தின் கொள்கைகளை உருவாக்கி நடைமுறைப்ப டுத்தும் முக்கியமான பணிகளில் உழைத்து வருவது சிறப்பம்சமாகும்.

வருவபையாகும். மத்தியமயப்படுத்தப் பட்ட ஆட்சேர்ப்பு, ஜனசக்தி போஷாக்குத் திட்டங்கள், பாடசாலைப் பிள்ளைகளுக் கான மதிய உணவுத்திட்டம், மாணவர்களுக் கான உடுதுணி விநியோகத்திட்டம், அரசு வாகனங்களின் எரிபொருள், வாகனப்பா விப்பு மேற்பார்வை போன்ற நடவடிக்கை கள் இவற்றிற்கென வேறான அரசுத்துறை நிறுவனங்கள் இருந்த போதிலும் கொள்கைத் திட்ட அமுலாக்கல் அமைச்சின் வழிகாட்டுத லின் பேரில் நடக்குமளவுக்கு திட்டமிடற் சேவையாளர்கள் என்றும் போல உயர்மட்ட அதிகாரிகளின் நம்பிக்கைக்குப் பாத்திரமான வர்கள் எனக் கூறின் மிகையாகாது.
இத்திட்டமிடல் சேவைக்கு சேர்வதெப் படி? என்ற கேள்வி இக்கட்டத்தில் எழுவதில் தவறில்லை. பல முக்கிய துறைகளில் சிறப் புப் பயிற்சி பெற்ற பட்டதாரிகளே இச்சே வைக்கு சேர்த்துக் கொள்ளப்படுவர். பொரு ளாதாரம், புள்ளிவிபரவியல், புவியியல், கணக்கியல் துறைசார்ந்த பலரும் பொதுப்ப ரீட்சைகள் மூலம் தெரிவு செய்யப்பட்டு வரு கின்றனர். புவியியல் துறையில் சிறப்புப் பட் டதாரிகள் பலரும் திட்டமிடல் சேவையில் அதிக அளவில் இடம் பெற்றள்ளதைக் கூறா மல் விடமுடியாது.

இப்படியாக சிறப்புப் பெற்ற புவியியல் பாட அறிவு இன்றைய மாணவர்கள் மத்தி யில் குறைந்து வருதல் பரீட்சையை மட்டுமே இலக்காகக் கொண்ட பாடத்திட்ட முறைகள் அறிமுகப்படுத்தப்பட்டதன் விளைவுகளில் ஒன்றேயாகும். பொது அறிவு வளர்ச்சிக்காக அல்லாமல் போட்டிமிக்க உலகில் சிறப்புக் கல்வி பெறும் 'நாயோட்டமாக" கல்விமுறை மாறி வருவதன்தன்மையுமிதுவாகும். புவியி யற்கல்வி மனித வாழ்வை வளம்டிடுத்தும் திட்டங்களை மனித நேயத்துடன் நோக்க வும், பரந்த மனப்பான்மையையும் ஒருலக நோக்கையும் பெறுவதற்கு எனக்கு சந்தர்ப்ப மளித்தது.
கலையும் விஞ்ஞானமும் சேர்ந்த புவியி யற்றுறைக்கு என் நாட்டம் சென்றதற்கு அன் றைய சைவ மங்கையர் வித்தியாலயத்தில் எனக்கு அறிவூட்டிய ஆசான்கள் முக்கியமாக புவியியல் கற்பித்த ஆசிரியர்களை நான் என் றும் நினைவு கூறுவது வழக்கம். 1951ம் ஆண் டிலிருந்து 1962ம் ஆண்டு வரையான காலப்ப குதியில் கடமையாற்றிய ஆசிரிய திலகங்கள், ஆங்கில ஆசிரியை திருமதி வான்குலம் பேர்க் முதல் தலைமையாசிரியராகக் கடமை யாற்றிய வீரம் மிக்க தலைவி செல்வி. நாகம்மா காசிப்பிள்ளை வரையில் என் முன் னேற்றத்திற்கு வித்திட்டவர்களாக உள்ளனர். யாவருக்கும் நன்றி.

சைவமங்கையர்
ஒவ்வொரு பிள்ளைக்கும் அப்பிள்ை வேண்டுமென்ற நீதியை நிலைக்கச் செய்வத டெTழ்நாள் முழுவதும் முயற்சி செய்தார். அந்த சம் சிறார்களுக்காக -குறிப்பாகச் சைவப்பிள் தகுறையை சைவமங்கையர் வித்தியாலயத்தை கையர் கழகத்தினர். இற்றைக்கு அறுபது ஆண்( யர் வித்தியாலயம் இவ்வாண்டில் தன் வைரவ இன்னல்களுக்கு மத்தியில் அரிய கல்விச் சமய
சைவ மங்கையர் வித்தியாலயம் 193 நாளன்று ஆரம்பிக்கப்பட்டது. இதனை நிறுவ காலஞ்சென்ற திருமதி சதாசிவம், திருமதி ந6 மூவருமாம். இவர்கள் தமது பிரதான நோக்கங் பாடு ஆகிய மூன்று குறிக்கோளையும் முன் ஆரம்பத்தில் வெள்ளவத்தைப் பீட்டர்சன் ஒழு தலைமைப்பீடமாகிய "பெசன்ற் இல்லத்தின்' வர்களோடு விஜயதசமி தினத்திலே வித்தியா
வித்தியாலயத்தின் முதலாவது முகாை வும்,தலைமை ஆசிரியராக காலம் சென்ற திரு ஆசிரியர்களாகக் காலஞ்சென்ற திருமதி நாக பொன்னையா அவர்கள் தெரியப்பட்டனர். இ கினர். மாணவர் தொகை படிப்படியாக கூட சாலை தற்போதைய இடமாகிய வெள்ளவத் அக்கால கல்விப் பணிப்பாளரான திரு. மாக்( திறந்து வைத்தார்.
திருமதி நல்லைநாதனைத் தொடர்ந்து 1936ம் ஆண்டுவரை பணிபுரிந்தார். இவரை காசிப்பிள்ளையவர்கள் அதிபராகப் பதவிே அருஞ்சேவையாற்றி இப்பாடசாலையை நாட் ளின் தரத்திற்கு உயரச்செய்தார். ஒரு பாடசா6 அதிபரின் வரலாற்றோடு பின்னிப் பிணைந்து காசிப்பிள்ளையின் சேவை விளங்கியது.
உயர் வகுப்புகள் படிப்படியாக ஏற்ப போன்ற பல பாடநெறிகள் தொடங்கியதோட ஊக்கம் எடுக்கப்படுவதாயிற்று. இவ்வாறு ச விளங்கியமையை அது ஈட்டிய சாதனைகளில்

ளயின் சமய அடிப்படையிற் கல்வி கற்பிக்க ற்கே பூரீலபூரீ ஆறுமுகநாவலர் அவர்கள் தம் வகையில் நோக்கின் கொழும்பு வாழ் தமிழ்பே rளைகளுக்காக ஒரு சைவப்பாடசாலை இல்லா நிறுவியதன்மூலம் போக்கினார்கள், சைவமங் டுகளுக்கு முன் ஆரம்பிக்கப்பட்ட சைவமங்கை விழாவைக் கொண்டாடுகின்றது. எத்தனையோ பப் பணிகளை ஆற்றி வருகின்றது.
2 ஆம் ஆண்டு புரட்டாதி மாதம் விஜயதசமி அன்று காரணகர்த்தாக்களாக விளங்கியவர்கள் bலைநாதன், திருமதி பா. நமசிவாயம் ஆகிய பகளாகிய இந்துமதம், தமிழ்மொழி, தமிழ்பண் ாவைத்து பாடசாலை நிறுவி வழிநடத்தினர். ழங்கையிலுள்ள பெளத்த சமயச்சங்கத்தினரின் ஒரு பகுதியை வாடகைக்குப் பெற்று ஏழுமாண லயத்தை ஆரம்பித்தனர்.
மயாளராக காலம் சென்ற திருமதி சி. தம்பையா மதிநல்லைநாதன் அவர்களும் பணியாற்றினர். ரத்தினம், செல்விகள் ஜெ. பொன்னையா, லீ. வர்களும் தமது சேவையை இலவசமாக வழங் த்தொடங்கியது. ஏழு மாதங்களின் பின் பாட தை உருத்திரா மாவத்தைக்கு மாற்றப்பட்டது. றே என்பவர் இதனை உத்தியோக பூர்வமாகத்

1945ம் ஆண்டிலிருந்து இலவசக் கல் பாடசாலைகளை 1960ம் ஆண்டு அரசாங்கம் நிலையென்ன என்ற கேள்வி வித்தியாலயத் யது. எது எவ்வாறாயினும், என்ன இன்னல் லையைத் தனித்தியங்கச் செய்யவேண்டுமென நிதி நிலையில் பாடசாலை முகாமையாளர்க இருப்பினும் அனைவரது அயரா உழைப்பினா ஆண்டுகளாக இப் பணியைத் தொடர்ந்தும் இன்று இலங்கை முழுவதிலும் ஒரேயொரு தனி ருமையையும், சிறப்பையும் பெற்று விளங்குத
செல்வி காசிப்பிள்ளை அவர்கள் ஒய் சபை பதவியேற்றார். இவரது சேவைக்கால சிறப்பாக நடந்தேறின. ஈராண்டின் பின் திரும டுத்து 1975ம் ஆண்டில் செல்வி ம. ஆறுமு: வருடங்கள் தொடர்ந்து அயராத கடின உழை
இப்போது எமது பாடசாலை நாட்டிலு கையில் விளங்குவதை அவதானிக்கலாம். செல்வி ஆறுமுகத்தின் தலைமையில் பாடச முன்னேறியமை சிறப்பாக குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. வியைத் திருமதி ஞானேஸ்வரி பாலச்சந்திரன் லப் பகுதியில் எமது பாடசாலை கல்வி நெறியி வளர்ச்சி அடைந்து வருகிறது என்றால் மிகை

The establishment and wonderful growth of the Hindu Ladies College and its allied activities is an almost impossible task achieved by a few women. Theirs was a labour of love and dedication to the cause of the Tamil Language, Hindu Religion and Tamil Culture. Their success was due to theirindefatigable effort, selfless dedication and perseverance. Credit and our gratitude go to the pioneers, the humble Trio - Mrs. Sathasivam, Mrs. Nallainathan and Mrs. Namasivayam.
The Commencement of this success story, was in the early 1930s with the formation of Saiva Mangaiyar Kalagam (Hindu Women's Society) in Colombo. The idea was mooted by the late Mudaliyar C. Rasanayagam and was well received by about 50 women of Colombo including the great Trio. The beginning was humble and devoid of any publicity and fanfare. They had no wealth or land to begin with. Love for their people and the determination to achieve their objective was their initial investment, when the Hindu Ladies’ College was established in 1932 in a rented building with a handful of students and honorary teachers. Since commencement there was no looking back, but a forward march. Of course, the progress was not without impediment, Some of which would have made men of stature falter and give up - there were the brick bats; jealousy, not uncommon among Shri Lankans; there were hurdles placed by educational policy changes; there were the adverse effects of communal disturbances and worst of all the lack of necessary finances to keep going.
As an old girl of Hindu Ladies' College, I am indeed grateful to my Alma Mater, for making me what I am. I learnt at Hindu Ladies' College from the Kindergarten to the University entrance, gaining admission to the Medical Faculty. A common yard stick used to determine the Status of a School is by the number of its students

I stuck to Hindu Ladies' College to the last, inspite of pressure brought on me by my parents and well wishers who thought that one could enter the University only through one of the few so called "Big Schools". I am happy that disproved this erroneous notion. wish that the future students of Hindu Ladies' College and their parents will resist from degrading the Hindu Ladies College by such actions. After all Hindu Ladies College is not second to any of the "Big Schools'
1 should say that I was very fortunate to have joined the school when Miss N. Kasipillai was the Principal and was in School during the time Miss M. Arumugam was the Principal, both of whom were responsible in no small measure for bringing the school to its present position.
AS the teachers in this School Were not transferable, they took an inherent interest in all the activities of the School and Were very dedicated.
I am also grateful for the training received to live the Hindu way of life and propagate the ideas of our Religion and Culture.
Now in the year of the HINDULADES' COLLEGE'S Diamond Jubilee, let us, old girls and well wishers of Hindu Ladies' College remember with gratitude the pioneers and all others, who by their dedicated service were responsible for the success of Hindu Ladies' College. Modern Society has witnessed innumerable discoveries and inventions in the fields of Science and Technology. In consequence of this man has made considerable progress in the fields of Science, Medicine, Technology, Economics, Commerce and Trade. Wealth has become a key factor in life and the goal lies in amassing wealth and power. The electronic media has brought the different parts of the World much closer than ever before and man is able to witness events and happenings in any part of the World from his home. Imitation of the West irrespective of culture seems to be the pattern of the day. As Swami Renganathanda puts it "Pleasure, Profit & Power" has become the goal of man. This material progress has increased competition jealousy and greed in all walks of life. This is breeding fear, frustration & Suspicion which are working vigorously to disturb the peace and tranquility of the Society. Coupled with this the women, by weight of her educational qualifications has left her home and entered the "mad rush” of moneymaking claiming liberty and equality she competes with man for education and employment. She imitates his role and function discarding her own roles and functions. This divorce from the home which is her due place is having serious repercussions on the family and society at large. Home life is disrupted child rearing and training have been relegated to non interested people or to institutions. Children, the future adults deprived of the

protection and care in the home, thirsting to have their needs satisfied become the victims of insecurity, fear or frustration and resort to narcotics, alcohol and drugs. Welfare associations and institutions are being called to meet their needs. The UNICEF charter on children's rights is partly the result of this malaise in present society. In this context it is relevant to consider the positions of the women in our Hindu Society and take lessons from our ancient thinkers.
Historical tradition & Culture show that the Women had been respected and held in esteem by the Society. The situation appears to have changed during the post Buddhistic and Islamic periods. In the Hindu Dharma sastras and epics their position is very clear. The following statements indicate their position.
"Women must always be honoured and respected by the father, brother, husband and brothers in law who desire their Own Welfare.' again
"Women should be adored and treated with love. Where women are treated with honour, the Gods are said to be propitiated and Where Women are not honoured all acts become fruitless.”

1. The Constitution
Man & woman are endowed with different physical & psychological make up by nature, because they have different functions to fulfil. It is the Woman who bears and rears the children. She is therefore endowed with love, patience, sacrifice and Service Without which children Cannot be brought up. She is Supreme as a mother. The very-conception of Mother is spiritual and God is worshipped as Mother in Hinduism. The Hindu ideal of womanhood is mother. The home is the mothers field even Thiruvalluar speaks of this position. She is the mother of both man and woman. Only a perfect wife can be an ideal mother. Chastity was her main ornament. Sita has been an illustration of this conceptin Ramayana, preserving her purity and chastity was her important function. Hence she had to be protected. In her childhood by the father, by the husband in youth and by the Sons at old age. "If she goes astray Society goes to ruin” says Manu, hence there were certain restrictions. The Welfare of a Society and the home were according to them in the hands of the Woman. The ancient sages therefore attached great importance to building of an ideal home.
2. The ideals of the Society
The ideals of the Hindu Society are derived from its conceptions of man. The indus accept the existence of a Soul or Atman which is divine and eternal. The soul has no gender, the form it takes depends on its karma. The soul therefore takes a male or female form to work out its karma, and move towards perfection. To Swami Vivekananda it is "the manife

station of the perfection already in man.” In moving towards this goal, the soul has to perform duties so as to manifest this potential divinity, by functioning in Society in accordance with their psycho-physical make up. This is called one's Sivadharma - the duty that is dependention one's own nature. By fulfilling one's Sivadharma one moves towards perfection - the blossoming of the innate spiritual qualities. This has been illustrated by the life of Saratha Devi. In Hindu Societyman views the total well being of a Society and not selfish individual gain. Therefore the Hindu accepts the division of labour in Society and performs his own duty consciously with Commitment and dedication.
Marriage in Hindu culture is nota contract but a Sacred trust - a union of two souls. The two souls actually unite to fulfil the ideal of life and prepare themselves as pilgrims of the "Jiva Yatra" to realise the fullest spirituality. This is effectively expressed in the Rigveda. "The husband and wife being equal in every respect therefore both should join and take equal parts in all work religious and secular."
In the Hindu Society man and woman are Considered as playing Complementary and not competitive roles. Each is incomplete without the other. The Upanishads say they are like the two pods of a pea. Philosophers say they are like Shiva and Sakthi. In the Puranas like "Arthanarshwara." The Divinity behind both is the Self same Atma. Here in lies the equality. The goal of life isto assertthe innerdivinity by performing their respective functions. All functions are equally important and the diversity of functions makes for unity. In todays Society we expect uniformity of roles and functions to work for unity and peace. In such functioning woman has her

important role as mother. Woman is the pillarin the home. Thiruvalluarand Avyaar have endorsed this. It is in the home that children are trained and shaped to become worthy members of Society. Mother is the personification of Love. This love is transformed into Self Sacrifice and Service. This position can never be taken by another. When the mother is for the most part out of her home the caring and training of children is neglected or relegated to people who do not possess the natural link. Lacking in love and care the children become emotionally disturbed - showing a lack of self confidence, self determination, contentment and will power. They have no adult model to follow and often become problems to themselves and to Society.
The social and spiritual values of the Society are also inculcated and nurtured in the home, by the mother. Through stories, Songs, festivals and religious praCtiCes the Children imbibe the Culture and values by participation. This type of informaland nonformallearninghasapermanent impact on their life and thought.
In the western concept of woman as wife, she seeks her own pleasure, self satisfaction and self importance. Being absorbed in herself she fails in her duties and speaks of rights or liberty and equality. Copying the west she is trying to compete with man in his own field and imitating him throws off her Womanly dignity. She has given up the protective walls of home and society and come to the open. Instead of liberty, she is expoSed to all forms of exploitation. Today she is exposed by the mass media as a sex symbol. She has lost herpurity and chastity and the traditional chivalrous attitude to, ards her is also absent.

Today education is the same for boys and girls with employment as the goal, when their roles and functions are different. This situation needs rethinking for the well being of the Society. They should be grounded in moral and spiritual ideas gain a general education to understand the World and environment. Besides others they need training in Aesthetics, Home Science, Mother Craft, Health and Hygienetogether with Social Sciences. In these times of stress and strain brought about by social changes girls are forced to work for economic reasons. In Such situations they could take to professions where they can maintain their womanly dignity and which are in harmony with their own nature rather than compete with man, displacing him. At a time when there is no full employment even for men, and there is much frustration and unhappiness it would be unwise for women to join the fray. Should they compete with their husbands and children under the mistaken notion of liberty and equality and destroy their homes? The home the basic unit of society is vital for children. Themother has a duty to care and serve them. It is only in a happy home that mutual love, regard and Service are cultivated and character is moulded. Children move Out from here as worthy members of Society. The vital role of the Woman in the home with all its functions should be inculcated to our girls, and prepared for their life. With man as equal partner they should be made to realise their duties and functions if we wish to halt, the youth unrest and the calamity our Society is heading for.
